The Upfronts took place last week in Toronto. The week sees our major Canadian networks presenting their upcoming 2023/2024 TV porgramming lineups and a chance for Advertisers to decide where best to put their placements.
The impact of the Writers’ Strike in Hollywood certainly could be felt this year with takent standing in solodarity with Writers, meaning fewer names would make their way to Toronto for festivities.
Despite that, we still are thrilled Quincy Isaiah made it out. Though he might still be an emerging name, he is a name to watch out for. He plays Magic Johnson in acclaimed Max series WINNING TIME: THE RISE OF THE LAKERS DYNASTY, the second season coming to HBO Canada and Crave. He stayed the weekend even to get the full Toronto experience, checking-out a Blue Jays game and Sotto Sotto we hear, before heading to Banff World Media Festival. Can’t wait for this new season!

A serialized dramedy set in the Florida Panhandle. Global’s first new pick-up joining the fall lineup is the much talked about light-hearted drama So Help Me Todd, which stars Academy Award winner Marcia Gay Harden as razor-sharp, meticulous attorney Margaret Wright (Harden), who hires her talented, but scruffy and aimless, son Todd (Astin) as her law firm’s in-house investigator.
Then, in Fire Country, former SEAL Team star Max Thieriot plays Bode Donovan, a young convict seeking redemption and a shortened prison sentence by joining an unconventional prison release firefighting program in Northern California, where he and other inmates are partnered with elite firefighters to extinguish massive, unpredictable wildfires across the region.
Next up, Monarch is a sweeping, multi-generational music drama about America’s first family of country music starring Academy Award winner Sarandon, multi-Platinum country music star and three-time Academy of Country Music (ACM) Award winner Trace Adkins and Golden Globe nominee Anna Friel, as they stop at nothing to protect their family’s legacy.
In addition, love is in the air on Global this fall with the new reality romance adventure The Real Love Boat, inspired by the classic hit scripted series The Love Boat, which brings singles together to travel the Mediterranean on a luxury cruise ship while looking for love. In honour of Canada’s National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, a new two-hour documentary sheds light on the history of the relationship between Indigenous people and settlers. True Story (2×60) offers a critical lens to the past, revealing some shameful and heartbreaking truths, as well as uplifting and inspiring hope.
For Remembrance Day, Our War (2×60) uncovers stories about extraordinary individuals who made heroic contributions to WWI and WWII. From the descendent of one of Canada’s first Black servicemen, to the great-grand-nephew of a female intelligence officer stationed at Bletchley Park, the documentary follows these descendant’s investigations into their families’ historic pasts.

Sarah Richardson takes on her own vacation rental challenge this fall in the previously announced Sarah’s Mountain Escape (10×60). The series follows Sarah and her husband, Alexander Younger, as they transform a run-down B&B in Whistler, B.C. into a four-season luxury vacation rental property. Another West coast-based design and renovation series is Pamela Anderson in Pamela’s Garden of Eden (8×60). Corus Studios dives deeper into scripted content with the previously announced set of romantic movies The Love Club (4x120min). The movies follow four women, each dealing with their own dating debacle, who take a vow to call on one another if they are ever in romantic trouble again – a vow that has them resurrecting their “Love Club” ten years later as each of them search for their unique happily-ever-after. The first movie is set to premiere on W Network Winter 2023. The movies will be distributed through Corus Studios.
ADULT SWIM
Corus is pleased to announce its second Canadian original series for Adult Swim, the popular network that offers an unexpected blend of authenticity, originality, and cleverness. The animated Red Ketchup (20×30), commissioned and greenlit by Corus’ French channel Télétoon la nuit, is based on the cult Quebec comic book series from the ‘80s of the same name. Featuring FBI’s crazed rogue agent, Steve “Red” Ketchup, the series will premiere in Canada on both Télétoon la nuit and in English on Adult Swim in 2023. Plus, the previously announced first Canadian original series for Adult Swim, Psi Cops (24×11), is set to premiere on Adult Swim Winter 2023. “Top” detectives Agent Kydd and Agent Felixx, of the secret agency Psi Cops, investigate spiritual phenomena, extraterrestrial life, and paranormal activity using their overly competent incompetence.

The live 90-minute telecast will feature performances, award presentations, and tributes honouring both established and emerging Black Canadian talent. The Black Academy is co-founded by Scarborough natives Shamier Anderson (John Wick: Chapter 4) and Stephan James (If Beale Street Could Talk).
• LIDO TV (Premieres Fall 2022 on CBC Gem; 6×20; Lido Pimienta TV/Visitor Media) is a variety show with a mission: to help people cope with life in a world that sometimes feels like it’s falling apart, filled with hilarious sketches, inspiring interviews, immersive documentaries, surreal animations, and puppets. At the centre of it all is host Lido Pimienta, the award-winning Colombian-Canadian musician, artist and mother whose hilarious, curious, and tender personality drives the action. The series shines a fascinating light on the booming and glamorous world of Bollywood culture and fashion, and offers an authentic glimpse into an intergenerationally run business lead by patriarch Cookie Singh, his wife Sarah, and their two children Chandan and Chandni. There’s plenty of old-school-meets-new-school drama and laughs as two generations take on the ever-changing and extravagant world of Indian weddings.
• CANADA’S ULTIMATE CHALLENGE (Premieres Winter 2023; 8×60; Insight Productions (a Boat Rocker Company) and The Gurin Company) is a competition reality format that turns the entire country into a giant obstacle course. Six extraordinary coaches will guide and mentor teams of everyday Canadians at site-specific physical and mental challenges in a unique competition structure. • RIDLEY ROAD (Premieres Fall 2022; 4×60; RED Production Company) is a riveting four-episode drama set in 1962 London, a colourful but tumultuous time, based on Jo Bloom’s acclaimed novel. Inspired by true events, RIDLEY ROAD stars newcomer Agnes O’Casey as Vivien Epstein, a young Jewish hairdresser who fits right into London’s mod scene, while secretly infiltrating the British neo-Nazi hierarchy on behalf of Jewish antifascists; Rory Kinnear (Penny Dreadful) as Colin Jordan, the real-life leader of Britain’s post-World War II Nazi movement; and Tom Varey (Ackley Bridge) as Jack, Vivien’s true love.

#SPOTTED: STARS IN TORONTO FOR 2019 CTV UPFRONT
The Blue Carpet was rolled out today at Sony Centre for the Performing Arts in celebration of the 2019 CTV Upfront. The annual affair which brings-in a bevvy of talent to present their Fall lineup, also gives potential advertisers a chance to see where there products will be seen on the Bell Media family of networks.
The fan-friendly event which gives fans a chance to see and meet the talent, saw several marquee names like Canada’s Cobie Smulders and Michael Ealy here to present Stumptown; Kevin McKidd and Greg Hermann for the just-renewed two seasons of Grey’s Anatomy; Donald Faison and Allison Tolman for Emergence; Wilson Bethel for All Rise; Hill Harper for The Good Doctor; and Jay Hayden and Jason George for Station 19. On the Canadian front, Cardinal’s upcoming fourth season was presented by Canadian Screen Award winners Karine Vanasse and Billy Campbell and also upcoming Medical Drama Transplant brought out John Hannah, Laurence LeBeouf and Hamza Haq. Breakout hit Series The Masked Singer also was acquired and joins CTV’s lineup.

Capping of Canadian Upfronts week, Bell Media unveiled their upcoming 2018/2019 programming lineup. Making headlines was their decision to re-brand several of their top stations. Space, Bravo, Comedy and Gusto will become CTV Sci-Fi, CTV Drama, CTV Comedy and CTV Life. CTV will also launch two new Video-on-Demand Services, CTV Movies and CTV Vault.
Fan favourites THE BIG BANG THEORY, THIS IS US, THE RESIDENT, YOUNG SHELDON and THE GOOD DOCTOR also return to CTV, while high-profile new Series like their MAGNUM P.I. Reboot, THE ROOKIE, THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT, GOD FRIENDED ME, THE ENEMY WITHIN, THE FIX, THE RED LINE, THE VILLAGE, GRAND HOTEL and WHISKEY CAVALIER also join the roster. THE ALEC BALDWIN SHOW, a new star-studded primetime Talk Show also surfaces.
Among the Canadian content, THE LAUNCH and CARDINAL will return, in addition to new Comedy Series JANN starring Jann Arden. CBC‘s THE BEAVERTON will be debuting at its new home on CTV.
The much-publicized SCTV Reunion Special directed by Martin Scorcese in Toronto, Canada’s Walk of Fame and ABBA: THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC, AN ALL-STAR TRIBUTE also will be presented on CTV.

Continuing with all the Upfront festivities in Toronto this week, Corus Entertainment is the latest Television giant to unveil their 2018/2019 schedule at the CORUS USFRONT!
Canadian favourites like Big Brother Canada, Mary Kills People, Private Eyes and Entertainment Tonight Canada will be returning for another season. Lifestyle favourites Top Chef Canada, Holmes + Holmes, Property Brothers, Property Brothers: Buying and Selling, Carnival Eats and Ultimate Food Bucket List are among the new and returning.
New and exciting to Global’s Primetime Lineup are Series FBI, NEW AMSTERDRAM, HAPPY TOGETHER, ABBY’S, I FEEL BAD, THE NEIGHBOURHOOD and DANCING WITH THE STARS: JUNIORS.
In-town to ring-in the celebrations were the likes of Property Brothers, Cedric The Entertainer (The Neighbourhood), Zeeko Zaki (FBI), Jocko Sims (New Amsterdam), Daniel Ezra (All American), Paul Adelstein (I Feel Bad) and Oliver Stark (911).
