#FIRSTLOOK: CTV ANNOUNCE 2024/2025 NEW AND RETURNING PROGRAMMING AT UPFRONT

In advance of today’s Upfront presentation, Bell Media announced a slate of high-profile new series joining the CTV schedule as part of the 2024/2025 season. As CTV marks the 23rd year in a row as Canada’s #1 conventional network in primetime, the buzzworthy new series further strengthen CTV’s roster of returning fan-favourite shows, acclaimed originals, and appointment-viewing live broadcast events.

The Joshua Jackson-led procedural DOCTOR ODYSSEY (Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT) with Don Johnson from prolific creator Ryan Murphy (AMERICAN HORROR STORY).

High-stakes Hawaii lifeguard drama RESCUE: HI-SURF (Mondays at 9 p.m. ET/PT), from award-winning executive producer/director John Wells (SHAMELESS) and showrunner/executive producer/writer Matt Kester (ANIMAL KINGDOM). Erin Jontow (SHAMELESS) and Daniele Nathanson (ANIMAL KINGDOM) also executive produce. RESCUE: HI-SURF also secures the coveted post-SUPER BOWL slot for a special episode to premiere in midseason.

YOUNG SHELDON spin-off GEORGIE & MANDY’S FIRST MARRIAGE (Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT) from executive producers/writers Chuck Lorre, Steven Molaro, and Steve Holland, the creative team behind THE BIG BANG THEORY.

Awards and Live Events

CTV remains the go-to destination for tentpole live events, following a year that saw significant viewership for live programming including the 96th OSCARS®, which was the #1 Entertainment Event; and SUPER BOWL LVIII, which was the most-watched Event of the year.

Heading into the 2024/25 season, CTV is the Canadian home to the 97th OSCARS® (Sunday, March 2), which also includes the return of ETALK AT THE OSCARS. CTV is also the destination for some of the season’s biggest awards show, including the 76th EMMY® AWARDS (Sunday, Sept. 15), celebrating the best that television has to offer; and Country music’s biggest nights with the CMA AWARDS and the CANADIAN COUNTRY MUSIC AWARDS (Saturday, Sept. 14).

The CFL comes to CTV this fall, with exclusive 3 p.m. ET Saturday games beginning Saturday, Sept. 7. CTV also joins the CFL ON TSN to showcase afternoon playoff matchups, and the networks combine to deliver Canada’s biggest single-day sporting event – the 111th GREY CUP, live from BC Place in Vancouver on Sunday, Nov. 17.

Today, Corus Entertainment announces its complete slate of Canadian original content to premiere across its specialty networks in 2024/25. The 34 new and returning titles include new seasons from HGTV Canada’s most trusted home and design experts, new challenges from Food Network Canada’s best competition series, new points of view from The HISTORY Channel®’s thoughtful docu-series and documentaries, and a fresh take on romantic comedy made-for-TV movies on W Network, plus new and beloved animated characters from Nelvana on Treehouse, YTV and Cartoon Network, appealing to families and kids of all ages. HGTV CANADA

Also, in production for HGTV Canada, Rentovation helps long-term leasers upgrade and personalize their space. The new series shares innovative solutions and clever designs that provide forever-home vibes and stunning transformations. This fall, luxury designer Ali Budd delivers high-end reveals and big-budget renovations in House of Ali, Season 1.

The network’s most anticipated original series return this fall with back-to-back premieres. Fan-favourites, Sebastian Clovis and Randy Spracklin bring heart, community, and tough renovations in Season 2 of Gut Job and Season 3 of Rock Solid Builds. FOOD NETWORK CANADA

Canada’s #2 Lifestyle network, Food Network Canada, features big stars, big eats, and big challenges in 2024/2025. The Top 10 specialty entertainment program**, Top Chef Canada returns for an epic Season 11 this fall with host Eden Grinshpan, judges Chef Mark McEwan, Mijune Pak, David Zilber, and Janet Zuccarini, and 10 all-new chef competitors from across Canada. Hollywood star, Pamela Anderson is joined in the kitchen by renowned chefs as she explores her passion for plant-based food and sets the table for intimate dinner parties with her friends and family in Pamela’s Cooking with Love, premiering next year. THE HISTORY CHANNEL

The HISTORY® Channel, a Top 10 specialty network* and destination for behind-the-scenes storytelling, premieres five new Canadian Original titles in 2024/2025. Brand-new series Yukon Rescue follows emergency response teams in Canada’s rugged north as they navigate extreme weather conditions, structure fires, avalanches, flash floods, spreading wildfires, and more to keep their communities safe.

The four-part documentary, Sounds Black, traces the origins and impact of Black Music in Canada. Directed by award-winning filmmaker Cazhhmere, with contributions from luminaries such as Kardinal Offishall, Jully Black, Fefe Dobson, Maestro Fresh Wes, Deborah Cox, Keisha Chante and more, the series explores Black Canadian music from its tangled diasporic roots to its international dominance. Kru Williams and Adam Palmer’s adrenaline-fueled hunt for gold and Taylor Starr and father Don Froese’s search for truth continue in Season 2 of Deadman’s Curse premiering this fall. Then, Mike, Connor, and Avery are back at the wheel in Season 5 of Rust Valley Restorers. W NETWORK

Nelvana’s award-winning short film Jelly will be making its official primetime debut this September on Cartoon Network. An inspirational modern fairy tale, Jelly explores the delicate balance between pursuing one’s passion of expressive art versus treading the financially murky waters of a soul-sucking factory job.

TREEHOUSE

Treehouse, the #1 overall Kids Specialty network with K2-11 and K2-5****, this Fall welcomes the much talked about and eagerly-awaited new series, Barney’s World, co-produced by Mattel Television and Nelvana. The CG-animated series is set in the local playground, where Barney is joined by dinos Billy and Baby Bop and their three kid best friends. Throughout silly and imaginative adventures together, Barney helps kids explore big preschool emotions and shows them how to love themselves, others, and their community.

Thomas & Friends: All Engines Go! continues to delight kids with Season 28 pulling into Treehouse this year, plus a brand new one-hour holiday special, Thomas & Friends: “The Christmas Letter Express” All Engines Go!, where Percy rushes to deliver a letter so the child’s Christmas Wish comes true.

Zokie of Planet Ruby premieres this Fall on YTV, the #1 Commercial Kids Specialty network with K6-11.* Ruby Studebaker and her alien BFF Zokie Sparkleby film their adventures around the town of Tres Leches. Along with their con-man friend Earl the squirrel, Ruby teaches Zokie about Earth, while Zokie tries to control his unpredictable alien powers.

Showcase

Showcase gets a slam dunk with the mockumentary comedy series Untitled Steph Curry/Adam Pally Project (WT). Coming soon to the network, the series tells the story of a down-on-his-luck memorabilia dealer (Adam Pally) who seeks redemption by reuniting with his childhood teammate, none other than NBA legend Stephen Curry.

Also landing on Showcase soon are a slew of dramas such as Hysteria!, which stars Modern Family’s Julie Bowen and is a coming-of-age thriller depicting a shocking tale of teenage outcasts, heavy metal bands and rising “Satanic Panic” in 1980s America, as well as Teacup, the horror thriller series starring Yvonne Strahovski and Canada’s own Scott Speedman, which follows a disparate group of people in rural Georgia who must come together in the face of a mysterious threat in order to survive. Teacup is from maestro of terror James Wan and created and executive produced by Ian McCulloch.

Also coming soon, star-studded, limited series Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist, featuring Kevin Hart, Samuel L. Jackson, Don Cheadle, Taraji P. Henson and Terrence Howard, based on the infamous story of how an armed robbery during the night of Muhammad Ali’s historic 1970s comeback fight changed not only one man’s life but an entire city’s destiny.

Highly anticipated Sky and Peacock Original series The Day of the Jackal and Lockerbie will also be coming to Showcase. Joining Showcase’s roster in 2024, The Day of the Jackal is a contemporary reimagining of the classic thriller starring Oscar, Tony and BAFTA-winner Eddie Redmayne as an elusive assassin and Lashana Lynch as a tenacious MI6 agent. And Lockerbie, starring Colin Firth, is a new limited series based on the devastating attack on Pan Am Flight 103 and the search for justice by Dr. Jim Swire and his wife Jane who tragically lost their beloved daughter, Flora, in the disaster in 1988.

Coming to W Network, Stephanie Hsu, fresh off her breakout, Academy Award®-nominated performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once, and Zosia Mamet, star in Laid, the story of a woman who finds out her former lovers are dying in unusual ways and must go back through her sex timeline to confront her past in order to move forward.

Then, All Her Fault is a gripping story that follows Marissa Irvine as she arrives at 14 Arthur Avenue, expecting to pick up her young son Milo from his first playdate with a boy at his new school. But the woman who answers the door isn’t a mother she recognizes. She isn’t the nanny. She doesn’t have Milo. And so begins every parent’s worst nightmare.

Dark comedy hit and Top 5 specialty entertainment show among F25-54, Based on a True Story, will be back on W Network for Season 2 as will a second season of Funny Woman. Also, Outlander is set to make its much-anticipated return to W Network with the remaining new episodes of Season 7.

HALLMARK CHANNEL ON W NETWORK

Through Corus’ esteemed partnership with Hallmark Media, Hallmark Channel’s Countdown to Christmas continuously places W Network as the #1 entertainment specialty station among A25-54 and F25-54 during the programming event. This past year W Network doubled its audience during the event compared to September and October, and was a Top 5 station across all Canadian English TV during those months.* STACKTV also saw a 24 per cent increase in minutes streamed for holiday movies,* contributing to the more than 10.3 billion minutes worth of Hallmark Channel’s Countdown to Christmas programming watched by Canadians across Corus’ combined linear and digital platforms.**

As the official Canadian home to Hallmark movies and seasonal stunts, W Network will see the biggest return of Hallmark Channel’s Countdown to Christmas this year yet, boasting more holiday content than ever before, including Mistletoe Murders, a small-town mystery series from Lionsgate Canada and Headspinner Productions based on the Audible global hit podcast of the same name. Sarah Drew stars as Emily, a small business owner, who runs a Christmas-themed store. She finds herself compelled to investigate local murders with the help of the handsome local police detective and his teen daughter. On the surface, Emily is a perfectly lovely, good-natured mystery lover – but she is hiding a secret past that, if exposed, threatens to destroy the new life she has built in Fletcher’s Grove.

The Chicken Sisters, a new original family drama series based on the New York Times Bestseller of the same name, is set to debut on W Network this year along with Celebrations with Lacey Chabert, the unscripted series featuring beloved Hallmark star Lacey Chabert. Hallmark’s smash-hit series The Way Home, filmed and based in Canada, starring Andie MacDowell, Chyler Leigh, Evan Williams and Sadie Laflamme-Snow, will return for Season 3. Adult Swim is also ushering in brand new animated series Kite Man: Hell Yeah! from the executive producers of Harley Quinn, Creature Commandos, a new animated series from executive producer and writer James Gunn, in which Amanda Waller creates a black ops team out of monstrous prisoners, Common Side Effects, a new series from executive producers Mike Judge and Greg Daniels that follows Marshall and Frances, two former high school lab partners who share a secret, and Invincible Fight Girl, an action-comedy set in Wrestling World, a place where wrestling is more than just sport and spectacle, it’s a way of life.

A new season of Harley Quinn will also return to Adult Swim this year. Host and comedian, Retta, tours terrifying properties that owners say are haunted by scary stories and hair-raising sights. New this fall on Global is a smart, modern take on the iconic procedural drama Matlock, starring Oscar®-winner and screen legend Kathy Bates in the titular role as “Matty,” Skye P. NEW PRIMETIME SERIES FOR FALL 2024

One of the most hotly-anticipated new acquisitions coming to Global on Thursdays this fall is Matlock, starring Oscar® winner Kathy Bates as Madeline “Matty” Matlock, a brilliant septuagenarian who achieved success in her younger years and decides to rejoin the workforce at a prestigious law firm where she uses her unassuming demeanour and wily tactics to win cases. Matty is assigned to Olympia (Skye P. Marshall), a senior attorney and key rainmaker with a thirst for justice. Olympia’s ex-husband, Julian (Jason Ritter), the son of the head of the firm, is intrigued by Matty and her clever skills. As Matty endeavours to establish herself in her new high-stakes world, she works alongside the firm’s younger associates – the charismatic Billy (David Del Rio) and the uber ambitious Sarah (Leah Lewis).

Next comes NCIS: Origins, the latest installment in the blockbuster hit NCIS franchise. Airing Monday nights, NCIS: Origins follows a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Austin Stowell) in 1991, years prior to the events of NCIS, and is narrated by Mark Harmon. In the series, Gibbs starts his career as a newly minted special agent at the fledgling NCIS Camp Pendleton office where he forges his place on a gritty, ragtag team led by NCIS legend Mike Franks (Kyle Schmid).

The crime-solving doesn’t stop on Global with the latest addition to Wednesday nights, Murder in a Small Town, based on L.R. RETURNING PRIMETIME SERIES FOR FALL 2024

NEW PRIMETIME SERIES FOR MID-SEASON

Global’s mid-season lineup kicks off with Watson. Taking place a year after the death of his friend and partner Sherlock Holmes at the hands of Moriarty, Dr. John Watson (Morris Chestnut) resumes his medical career as the head of a clinic dedicated to treating rare disorders. Watson’s old life isn’t done with him, though – Moriarty and Watson are set to write their own chapter of a story that has fascinated audiences for more than a century. Watson is a medical show with a strong investigative spine, featuring a modern version of one of history’s greatest detectives as he turns his attention from solving crimes to solving medical mysteries.

Then, Doc follows the hard-charging Chief of Internal Medicine Dr. Amy Larsen (Molly Parker). After a brain injury erases the last eight years of her life, Amy must navigate an unfamiliar world where she has no recollection of patients she’s treated, colleagues she’s crossed, the man she loves, or the tragedy that caused her to push everyone away. Scott Wolf is featured in a recurring role as Dr. Richard Miller. An attending physician, Richard is uptight, ambitious, and afraid to admit mistakes.

Next up is the return of the iconic game show Hollywood Squares, which features two contestants playing tic-tac-toe to win money and prizes. The “board” for the game is a vertical stack of open-faced cubes, each occupied by a celebrity seated at a desk and facing the contestants. The celebrities are asked questions and the contestants judge the legitimacy of their answers to win the game. Award-winning actress and daytime’s #1 talk show host Drew Barrymore will take her place as the famed “centre square” answering questions for the contestants.

#SPOTTED: QUINCY ISAIAH IN TORONTO FOR BELL MEDIA UPFRONT

The Upfronts took place last week in Toronto. The week sees our major Canadian networks presenting their upcoming 2023/2024 TV porgramming lineups and a chance for Advertisers to decide where best to put their placements.

The impact of the Writers’ Strike in Hollywood certainly could be felt this year with takent standing in solodarity with Writers, meaning fewer names would make their way to Toronto for festivities.

Despite that, we still are thrilled Quincy Isaiah made it out. Though he might still be an emerging name, he is a name to watch out for. He plays Magic Johnson in acclaimed Max series WINNING TIME: THE RISE OF THE LAKERS DYNASTY, the second season coming to HBO Canada and Crave. He stayed the weekend even to get the full Toronto experience, checking-out a Blue Jays game and Sotto Sotto we hear, before heading to Banff World Media Festival. Can’t wait for this new season!

She lives in Sherwood Towers, a community of rental high-rises in a working-class corner of New Nottingham, where the cost of living has skyrocketed, leaving an ever-widening gap between the rich and everyone else. When Robyn finds herself fighting for her home and her family against local property developer John Prince and The Sheriff of New Nottingham, Robyn and her band The Hood decide to fight back, righting the wrongs of the corrupt elite to give back to the people.

Global is home to some of the most entertaining reality competition series. New to Global comes the high-octane Lotería Loca. In each episode, two players go head-to-head and take turns picking cards to get four-in-a-row, which is Lotería. Each time a card appears on their unique bingo-style card, they bank big money. Landing on one of the “Loca Cards” creates a twist in the game and gives players the opportunity to bank even more cash by competing in wild, interactive challenges. The player who gets the most “Loterías” on their board the fastest, moves on to the dramatic final round for a chance to win the ultimate show cash prize.

In addition, the hilarious new competition series Buddy Games, created and hosted by Josh Duhamel joins Global’s lineup later this year. Buddy Games is a reality competition inspired by executive producer Josh Duhamel’s real-life annual tradition with his lifelong friends. For the past 20 years, one weekend a summer, Duhamel reunites with his childhood friends to compete in a variety of competition-style games. Based on Duhamel’s own experience, Buddy Games will bring together best friends from different backgrounds and offer them the same opportunity to live together, compete in wild challenges and prove their bonds run deep.

From the executive producers of THE ROOKIE comes THE ROOKIE: FEDS, starring Niecy Nash-Betts (CLAWS) as Simone Clark, the oldest rookie in the FBI Academy. The spinoff was introduced as a two-part event during the fourth season of THE ROOKIE, where Officer John Nolan (Nathan Fillion, CASTLE) and the L.A. division of the FBI enlist the help of Simone Clark when one of her former students is a suspect in a terror attack. People often think about Miami when it comes to cocaine, but Montréal may have been the biggest drug kingdom of them all. By the 70s, Montréal, the infamous party town, was engulfed in mayhem. The city had become known as the bank robbery capital of North America with more heists than New York or Los Angeles. Then, a brazen group of thieves moved into the drug trade, smuggling cocaine on a global scale. This 90-minute, true crime documentary chronicles the path to power of one of Montréal’s most influential and violent gangs, the infamous West End Gang, and the cops and journalists who pursued its three leaders. It’s an unlikely rise and inevitable fall, but more importantly, it’s a largely forgotten and underreported story, even for the most seasoned of true crime fans. As mentioned earlier in the confirmed Fall lineup, and hot off its Canadian Screen Award-winning success, CTV‘s TRANSPLANT has been ordered for a third season, with 13 new episodes to come. Stars Hamza Haq and Laurence Leboeuf were there to make an appearance.

CTV Original Comedy Series CHILDREN RUIN EVERYTHING also will be back for a second season, and Stars Aaron Abrams, Meaghan Rath and Ennis Esmer were here to tell us about it!
