After 17 seasons in the NFL, Football icon Tony Gonzalez has found much success in the second act of his career as both a Television personality and now an Actor. The former Tight End for the Kansas City Chiefs and the Atlanta Falcons has the distinction of playing 14 Pro Bowls! He currently can be seen on CBS’ The NFL Today.
Gonzalez has been in and out of Toronto the past month working on his big screen debut in XXX: The Return of Xander Cage. Although little is known about his role just yet. He was seen flying-in with Toni Collette who plays a bureaucrat in the C.I.A. Perhaps they will be filming scenes together? He was amazingly nice to stop for a Photo as Collette head-on over to her vehicle first and he stayed behind for a couple Selfies! Great dude!
XXX: The Return of Xander Cage continues to film in Toronto through late May. Paramount Pictures release in January 2017.

Taking place tonight at the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts, the fourth annual Canadian Screen Awards fêted the very best in both Television and Cinema this past year. Sweeping in the Film categories including Best Film, was Academy Award Nominee for Best Picture, ROOM, shot here in Toronto last winter and subsequently winning the Cadillac People’s Choice Award at TIFF 2015.
In addition to garnering Brie Larson her first Oscar victory last month, the American Actress won Best Film Actress tonight for her work in the Film Adaptation of Emma Donoghue’s best-selling novel, its screenplay also penned by the latter. Director Lenny Abrahamson and Donoghue herself also won in their respective categories.
Child Actor Jacob Tremblay stole the show, garnering a well-deserved victory for Best Film Actor for his portrayal of a child named Jack whom after living all his life isolated from the world with his Ma (Larson), is faced with the challenge of adapting to the real world after he manages to flee from his and his mother’s captor. He tells the Press Room with great pride that he will be displaying his award on his shelf alongside his Millennium Falcon. As we all know by now, he loves Star Wars.
I ask Tremblay what he has to say to Brie Larson whom he has navigated so successfully through Awards Season these past few months. He tells me, “I hope we can work together again”.
CBC Comedy Schitt’s Creek also dominated the Television categories with three wins tonight including Best TV Comedy Series, Best Actor (Eugene Levy) and Actress (Catherine O’Hara) in a TV Comedy. O’Hara and Levy both agree that the Canadian Screen Awards should be given an official nickname of the “Candies” for phonetic and sentimental reasons. The name pays tribute to their SCTV Co-Star John Candy, a Canadian icon who left us far too soon.
Orphan Black also once again was recognized tonight, its upcoming season having wrapped in Toronto just recently. Its star Tatiana Maslany won Best Actress in a TV Drama Series, but unfortunately was busy at the SXSW Festival promoting her new Film with partner Tom Cullen this weekend. Her Co-Star Ari Millen was honoured with Best Actor in a TV Drama Series.

English Thespian Alexander Siddig already has quite the cult following, known affectionately as Dr. Julian Bashir for his work in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Add to that his body of work which includes the likes of Game of Thrones, Syriana, Cairo Time, Atlantis and Primeval, Toronto once again welcomes the star back as he begins work on FOX TV Pilot RECON. Siddig in previous years has been in the City for TIFF for Inescapable and Cairo Time.
According to Synopsis, the Pilot centers around Alexa (Tracy Spiridakos), a young, driven FBI analyst tasked with embedding herself in a suspected terrorist family. Siddig plays her target Omar, a father, husband and devout Muslim who has no idea the Feds have been tracking his every move.
We spotted Siddig doing groceries earlier and he was a great sport about stopping for a quick Selfie, telling a Fan in a T-Shirt to keep warm!

Washington native Noah Robbins has been in Toronto for the past month working on gun control drama MISS SLOANE. He has garnered acclaim for his work on Broadway in productions like Bright Beach Memoirs, Arcadia and an off-Broadway production of Secrets of the Trade.
Robbins since has appeared on popular series like Masters of Sex, The Good Wife, Orange is the New Black and Gotham. His career very much is headed the right direction with the Oscar bait of a project he’s filming here in the City in which he stars as the slightly-geeky junior, Franklin Walsh. More recently he was on the ratings hit, GREASE LIVE! as Eugene, which now is in stores!
We by chance spotted Robbins out today with a friend and recall seeing him in passing when visiting the set of MISS SLOANE earlier this week, when we met Mark Strong! Great guy and we’re excited to follow his bright career ahead!

Continuing its massive domination a second week, Disney‘s ZOOTOPIA spends a second week on-top with $49 million from 3,827 theatres. In two weeks, it has garnered an outstanding $141.7 million domestically.
10 CLOVERFIELD LANE, which many had no idea was even a thing a couple months back, makes an impressive debut in second for Paramount Pictures with $24.5 million from 3,391 theatres. Starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead and John Goodman, this latest addition to the Cloverfield franchise is directed by Dan Trachtenberg. 2008’s Cloverfield however, opened with $40 million. Reviews from Critics unanimously were positive at 91% on the Tomatometer but Audiences were less impressed with a B- CinemaScore.
DEADPOOL continues to go strong in third with $10.5 million for 20th Century Fox. Thus far in five weeks it has grossed $325 million across North America. Star Ryan Reynolds with wife Blake Lively received much media attention this week attending a State Dinner alongside Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and President Barrack Obama.
LONDON HAS FALLEN is in fourth in its second week out for Focus Features/VVS Films with $10.2 million. In two weeks it has made $38 million.
THE PERFECT MATCH might not have even had a Canadian release, but it makes $4.5 million for Lionsgate Films in the U.S., from 925 theatres, good enough for sixth spot. The Rom-Com is directed by Bille Woodruff and stars Cassie Venture and Terrence J.
THE YOUNG MESSIAH also is out only in the U.S. right now but debuts in seventh with $4 million for Focus Features from 1,761 theatres. The Biblical Drama stars Adam Greaves-Neal and Sean Bean.
THE BROTHERS GRIMSBY starring Sacha Baron Cohen and Mark Strong, shockingly debuts in eighth with $3.1 million only for Sony Pictures. Reviews were negative overall from Critics (38% on the Tomatometer) who were able to screen it (it wasn’t made available to Canadian media outlets), but Audiences gave it a solid B+ CinemaScore.
RISEN rounds-out the Top Ten with $2.8 million for Sony Pictures in its fourth week out. It has made $32 million to-date domestically.
With Canadian Screen Week well under way, the party was lit at 99 Sudbury tonight as the Academy Social took place, in celebration of excellence in Social Media. Hosted by eTalk’s Liz Trinnear and Much‘s Jus Reign, awards were handed out across multiple categories for social media innovation.
