SYNOPSIS
When a twenty-something retail clerk encounters a rising pop star, he takes the opportunity to edge his way into the in-crowd. But as the line between friend and fan blurs beyond recognition, access and proximity become a matter of life and death.
The directorial debut from The Bear and Beef writer-producer Alex Russell, LURKER is an exhilarating cat-and-mouse thriller made for the moment. Online fixation meets reality in this parasocial, paranoid film driven by a brilliant score and star-making performances.
DIRECTOR’S BIO
Alex Russell is the writer & director behind LURKER, which premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. He most recently served as a Co-Executive Producer on Netflix/A24’s BEEF, for which he won an Emmy award for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series. Canada’s Got Talent is produced by MEM Inc., and Fremantle, in association with Citytv, a division of Rogers Sports & Media based on the Got Talent format owned by Fremantle and SYCO Entertainment.
Italy/US co-production producing partners, Marta Zaccaron, Incipit Film and Christine La Monte, La Monte Productions, in association with Andy Cohen, AC Films Inc. are pleased to announce that Maxim Derevianko feature film directorial debut’s documentary, AI WEIWEI’S TURANDOT will have its Canadian premiere at Hot Docs 2025 as part of their Big Idea. ( https://hotdocs.ca/festivals/hot-docs-festival/big-ideas)
AI WEIWEI’S TURANDOT is an Italy/US co-production directed by Maxim Derevianko (Ars Erotica, Origen, Le Creature di Prometeo/Le Creature di Capucci), co-written by Michele Cogo (The Red Door) and Derevianko and produced by Co-production producing partners, Marta Zaccaron (The Kiss of the Grasshopper, Family Therapy, Sanremo), and Christine La Monte (VIVA VERDI!), with producer Andy Cohen (To Kill a Tiger) executive produced by Julian Lennon (Maya, Women of the White Buffalo) and Marcie Polier (Two Gun Cohen.)
AI WEIWEI’S TURANDOT delves into the artistic journey of renowned Chinese artist and activist, Ai Weiwei, during his groundbreaking operatic directorial debut at the Rome Opera House. Drawing inspiration from Puccini’s renowned opera, Turandot, Ai Weiwei masterfully weaves together the opera’s timeless narrative with contemporary global issues, including the Ukraine war, the refugee crises, tyranny, freedom of speech, and more. The film not only reaffirms the enduring relevance of Puccini’s masterpiece but also serves as a reflection of Ai Weiwei’s life and artistic philosophy. Capturing the meticulous staging, rehearsals, and collaborations that bring this visionary production to life, the film takes viewers on an historic behind-the-scenes exploration of Ai Weiwei’s creative process. According to esteemed choreographer Chiang Ching, a lifelong friend and collaborator of Ai Weiwei who provides insights into the deeply personal connection between Ai Weiwei and Turandot, the opera serves as a reflection of Ai Weiwei’s own life. This fusion of the opera’s stunning visuals, evocative music, and powerful storytelling offers a transformative experience that encompasses the essence of Ai Weiwei’s creative vision and process inviting viewers to witness the convergence of music, activism, and visual art, celebrating the enduring legacy of Turandot and the visionary spirit of Ai Weiwei.
AI WEIWEI’S TURANDOT Co-production producing partners Marta Zaccaron and Christine La Monte, producing together with Andy Cohen, remark, “Hot Docs and its arts-forward audience is the perfect festival for AI WEIWEI’S TURANDOT to make its North American Premiere. The film celebrates the creative process and the power of collaboration, revealing the transformative impact that art can have on individuals and society at large. Thank you Heather Haynes and your stellar team for embracing our film – we are all thrilled to be Toronto-bound!”
Director Maxim Derevianko adds, “Delighted to have my Canadian premiere at Hot Docs. Working with Ai Weiwei has been a life-long dream realized – through his directorial journey, I’ve been able to explore the intersection of opera, activism, and contemporary challenges. Very happy to be sharing our film with Hot Docs audiences – renowned for appreciating documentaries.”
Cinematography by Maxim Derevianko, editing by Emanuele Bonomi (Croste di Polenta) with consulting editor Kate Amend (Into The Arms of Strangers,) sound editing and mix by Federico Cabula (Una Femmina: The Code of Silence), Marco Falloni (The Eight Mountains) with original music by Marco Guazzone (The Place.)

CosmoBlue Media, a dynamic force in digital distribution and entertainment, recently completed the acquisition of the Cineplex Store from Cineplex Entertainment, and today announced its plans to rebrand the blockbuster streaming platform as CosmoGO later this year. This strategic move cements CosmoBlue Media’s commitment to delivering premium entertainment experiences globally, while also signaling a deepened investment in the Canadian market.
The Cineplex Store platform has long been a favourite for Canadian audiences, offering over 10,000 titles from Hollywood blockbusters to indie gems and rare finds, and bringing the magic of the big screen directly into homes. CosmoBlue Media is poised to expand the future of CosmoGO, building on its global content library and strong relationships with major studios, distributors, and international content partners.
As a rising player in digital distribution and entertainment, CosmoBlue Media plans to build on this acquisition by expanding its theatrical offerings to exhibitors across Canada. This will include a dynamic slate of event-driven releases, from feature films to special presentations such as live concerts and sports showcases, available both in-theatre and on the CosmoGO platform. These initiatives are designed to enhance the Canadian entertainment experience and offer audiences unique, immersive content beyond traditional cinema.
Following the rebrand, CosmoGO will be evolving into a multi-platform service in Canada. The service will integrate Transactional Video on Demand (TVOD), Pay Per View (PPV), Subscription Video on Demand (SVOD), and Advertising-based Video on Demand (AVOD) offerings, providing Canadian audiences with unprecedented access and choice in their entertainment experience.
This acquisition aligns seamlessly with CosmoBlue Media’s vision of redefining entertainment consumption. “We are excited to introduce CosmoBlue to Canadian audiences with the start of CosmoGO,” said Loni Farhi, Co-Founder and Group President of CosmoBlue Media. “This represents a pivotal step in our mission to provide unparalleled entertainment experiences across multiple platforms. By integrating Cineplex Store’s rich catalog with our expertise in digital distribution, we’re set to redefine how audiences engage with premium content. Furthermore, this marks one of our major investments in Canada, reaffirming our commitment to this thriving market.”
Canadians can look forward to a broader range of titles, enhanced curation, and an exciting future of experiences. Whether they’re curled up on the couch, catching something on the go, or gearing up for the big-screen experience, the future of entertainment with CosmoBlue is meeting audiences exactly where they are.

We are delighted to collaborate for the first time ever with Mazda Canada on a test drive of one of their most popular offerings, the 2025 MAZDA CX-5 SPORT DESIGN. Mazda‘s philosphy always has been to make driving a pleasure and also enrich the lives of owners, achieving this through a unity between vehicle and driver. This is known as “Jinba-Ittai”.
Our beautiful midsize SUV came in an eyecatching Soul Red Crystal Metallic, seating five comfortably on a sturdy Leatherette. The driver and passenger each get six-way seat adjustment, with and there are luxuries like a heated stearing wheel, seat heaters and coolers. And did we mention a gorgeous moonroof? All adventures begin with a simple pushbutton start.
The CX-5 is powered by a SKYACTIV-G 2.5T, DOHC 16-valve, 4 cylinder engine, operating on Regular fuel and 187 horsepower. We felt empowered on the road, driving with force whether we were in the City, on the highways, or in the suburbs.
It also runs on 17-inch alloy wheels (silver metallic), 225/65R17 all-season tires, complete with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System. Anyone who’s ever experienced a flat tire will understand the importance of having this feature.
We were blessed to be driving in a time of a Carbon Tax slash, which gave us even more value out of the CX-5‘s great fuel economy of 10.8, 8.7, 9.8 L/100km (city, highway, combined). This means more budget for shopping and its spacious allotment for cargo in the back, you know the CX-5 has got you.
Mazda’s focus on innovation is seen in the many day to day things that make our drives more pleasurable. Air conditioning with manual climate controls for driver and passenger show a real concern for others riding along, plus rear heater ducts (under front seats). We’ve never driven a car that had a Pollen Filter, but the CX-5 had this, and this would come in handy in the upcoming allergy season for many. Wheel- mounted controls were very handy, allowing us to adjust audio volumes and skipping ahead on our Playlists with ease during our drives.
One thing we will point out though is that we appreciate keyless entry with its fob type key, having Proximity Entry would have sealed the deal for us completely. It can be cumbersome fidgeting to open a door with full hands and the placement of the lock/unlock features on the key are a tad tricky, having such tiny buttons on the side of the key. Another small issue was not having actual USB charging ports as there was every other option available including C Port charging outlets and a 12V socket (who honestly uses a 12V socket for real?). These are minor issues however, and can be overlooked.
We love a large screen, and the CX-5‘s 10.25” full colour centre display with Mazda Connect Infotainment system, touch-screen centre display for Apple CarPlay™ / Android Auto™ was appreciated. Syncing to Bluetooth was a breeze, but where we had some struggles was not being able to disconnect from Android Auto once the car was connected. This means we couldn’t switch over to Sirius XM or the Radio. If there was a way, it truly didn’t feel easy. We found it interesting that you could not navigate the touchscreen at all during the drive out of safety, which can be a bit frustrating for some. While the car is braked or in park mode, that’s when you can navigate the menu again.
Other things that we loved were the front centre console with armrest, cupholders and a sizy storage. Latches for internal hood and fuel door release were thoughtful, and we love tinted windows in the back. Our dear miss beanie needs her privacy for her naps while we drive!
We love Mazda‘s next level concern for safety and the CX-5 is loaded with safety features including: Smart City Brake Support Front (SCBS-F); Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM); Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA); Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop&Go function (MRCC with Stop&Go ); Smart Brake Support Front (SBS-F); Pedestrian Detection (forward sensing); Distance Recognition Support System (DRSS); Forward Obstruction Warning (FOW); Lane keep-Assist System (LAS); Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS); High Beam Control system (HBC); Rearview camera (wide angle); Dynamic Stability Control (DSC); Traction Control System (TCS); Hill Launch Assist (HLA); Dual front and dual side airbags; Dual side curtain airbags; 3-point seat belts for all seating positions (2 front; 3 rear); Front and rear (outboard seats only) seat-belt pretensioners with force limiters; Integrated child-safety-seat lower anchors & upper tether anchors; Child-safety rear door lockouts; Height adjustable front and rear seat head restraints, Height adjustable front seat belts; and Engine immobilizer theft deterrent system.
We found Traffic Sign Recognition with navigation on our windshield an amazing feature not only for recognizing speed limits, but also knowing which way we’re turning next on our drives. This is a game changer. We cannot speak enough to the importance of a rearview camera for flawless parellel parking and reversing. Above this the CX-5 was always on the ball pointing our vehicles coming into our blind spots, giving us that extra piece of mind.
Some very star-studded and delicious adventures, thanks to the 2025 Mazda CX-5 Sport Design:

With signature sardonic takes on the perils of flying, charity auctions, and the evolution of porn, Spade is sharper and funnier than ever in Dandelion. Since his legendary tenure on Saturday Night Live, Spade’s prolific career has included classics like Tommy Boy, Black Sheep, The Emperor’s New Groove, Joe Dirt, and the sitcom Just Shoot Me!. He now co-hosts the wildly popular comedy podcast “Fly on the Wall” with fellow SNL alum Dana Carvey. Now, it’s time for Spade to make a triumphant return to the stage in his highly-anticipated fourth comedy special.
Spade became a household favourite during his tenure as a cast member on NBC’s Saturday Night Live. For his memorable role as Dennis Finch, the wise-cracking, power-hungry assistant on Just Shoot Me, Spade received nominations for a 1999 Emmy Award, Golden Globe, and American Comedy Award. His latest stand-up special, Nothing Personal, debuted on Netflix in 2022, and he continues to be a box office draw, selling out stand-up venues nationwide.
Most recently, Spade wrapped production on BUSBOYS, which he stars in and co-wrote with Theo Von. Currently, Spade can be seen on his I Got A Feel For It stand-up tour and heard co-hosting the top-ranked podcast Fly on the Wall, alongside fellow SNL alumni Dana Carvey. In each episode, they interview cast members, hosts, writers, and musical guests, as they share never-before-told stories about their careers and SNL’s cultural history. The podcast premiered #1 in the comedy category and in the top five overall on Apple’s podcast chart, and won “Best Comedy Podcast” of 2024 at the iHeartRadio Podcast Awards. The podcast has featured interviews with Sir Paul McCartney, Lorne Michaels, Jimmy Fallon, Martin Short, Tina Fey, Maya Rudolph, Molly Shannon, Tom Hanks, and many more. New episodes are released every Wednesday, everywhere podcasts are available. Spade and
Carvey also co-host its spin-off pop culture podcast Superfly.
The special was directed by Spade, and he also serves as a producer, alongside Marc Gurvitz, Alex Murray, and John Irwin.
