Jason Bateman & Mr. Will:

He’s been hand-picked by the likes of Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Oprah, Naomi Campbell and Justin Timberlake. After four years in the making, DJ Cassidy is set to make an explosive debut with his first Album Paradise Royale, set tentatively for a release in May. The star-studded Affair features collaborations with 22 of the most influencial Musicians of the Disco Era and a roster of Guest Vocalists which will have you asking, “Like, how?!?”. Mary J. Blige, Estelle, R. Kelly, Cee-Lo, John Legend, Kelly Rowland, Passion Pit and so many more lend their talents in a way you’ve never quite heard them before!
DJ Cassidy dons a stylish fedora and a large brooch with the letter “C”, a signature look which matches his level of musical sophistication. We learn he is very hands-on with his approach, humbled by the opportunity to give musical direction to many of his Heroes on his upcoming Disc. He also incorporates a Live Band to his Act when performing live, as he currently opens on tour for Robin Thicke.
“The first step was I sat down and made a Playlist of my favourite 25 songs of that Era (1978-1982)”, says the eloquent New Yorker says to an intimate Audience of Tastemakers at Toronto’s Drake Hotel, “How do I make my songs feel like these Songs?”. He adds, “I made a list of every Musician who ever worked on these Songs – the Drummer, the Guitar Player, the Horn Player and so on. I made 25 lists and what I saw was the same names repeated over and over and over.”. “To achieve my mission, I had to go to the source – so for the past four years, I reunited 22 of the most legendary Musicians to recreate their sound”. He then went-on to premiere four unheard Tracks from his Album.
I was floored by the John Legend and Estelle Track When The Stars Come Out. I try convincing DJ Cassidy this needs to be his Followup Single as we exchange a hug, him telling me he saw me grooving from the stage as he measured reactions from the Crowd. Current Single, Calling All Hearts featuring the vocals of Robin Thicke and Jessie J. Disco Era heavyweights Philip Bailey, Verdine White and Larry Dunn of Earth, Wind & Fire. Mega-Producer Nile Rodgers even brings out the same guitar we hear on Chic‘s Good Times and Madonna‘s Material Girl. But back to When The Stars Come Out, the Track is like nectar to the ears. “I normally call my own shots, but ultimately I trust the Label to decide what’s best”, he says about whichever Track next will see a release.
DJ Cassidy‘s Soulful Funk revival (please do not use the word “Disco“) could well define the Sound of 2014, reconnecting his Generation of Hip-Hop-obsessed Music Listeners to what he calls “the most universal Dance Music of all time”. The Crowd in attendance is delighted by infectious Passion Pit Collabo So Long Baby, a true mark of his ability as a Producer, making them sound convincingly soulful; there is big potential there for a Crossover Hit.
Noticing an R. Kelly Collaboration sequenced late on his Playlist projected onto the screen, the Audience begged for him to play the Track, Make the World Go Round, and they certainly are not left disappointed, greeting it with loud cheers and claps. The Track is a result of multiple flights and sessions with the controversial Singer/Songwriter. It rates among his best work.
I ask DJ Cassidy whom he wishes to collaborate with still. “I submitted a list of 30 Vocalists and immediately got to work with 10 of my top picks”, he reveals. “Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake and Miguel I hope can be on the next Album.”. Well, at this rate, it sure doesn’t seem impossible – wouldn’t you agree?

David Cronenberg. Orphan Black. Gabrielle. Enemy. Call Me Fitz. These five names might not strike a connection other than that they are distinctly Canadian, but they were fêted tonight as big Winners at the 2014 Canadian Screen Awards. The week-long Celebrations known as Canadian Screen Week culminated in a star-studded Red Carpet Bash at Sony Centre for the Performing Arts, seeing several of our Country’s Heroes and Heroines of the Screen convening proudly in the name of our artistic accomplishments.
Over the course of the week, Toronto-filmed Sci-Fi Series Orphan Black amassed a whopping ten wins including TV Drama tonight. Its Star Tatiana Maslany certainly has shined a light on Canadian Talent over the past year, garnering a Critics’ Choice Award south of the Border last June for her performance(s) as several identical Women revealed to be Clones. The 28-year-old Regina-born Actress won for Actress, TV Drama, which is seen on BBC America and the Space Channel in Canada. A Belle of the Ball, indeed.
Making a splash in the TV categories was Call Me Fitz, winning for TV Comedy. Starring former Beverly Hills, 90210 Hunk Jason Priestley and Tracy Dawson, both won Actor and Actress, TV Comedy respectively. Priestley also directed Maslany in the Feature Film Cas & Dylan, for which she received also a nomination for Actress, Motion Picture.
Warming hearts this evening was Gabrielle Marion-Rivard, who lit-up the Press Room with her big smile, tightly clasping onto her Trophy. The first-time Actress stars in Gabrielle, which won her coveted Actress, Motion Picture. The Coming-of-Age Tale centering on a musically-gifted Teen suffering from Williams Syndrome (a condition with which Marion-Rivard actually has been diagnosed), went-on to win in the category of Motion Picture for eOne Films. The Canadian Distributor also saw more accolades with its new release Enemy, filmed in Toronto and directed by Denis Villeneuve, going-on to win for Director, Motion Picture and Supporting Actress, Motion Picture with Sarah Gadon.
Iconic Filmmaker David Cronenberg was honoured this Evening with the Lifetime Achievement Award and to ring-in the occasion were long-time Collaborator Viggo Mortensen and Maria Bello. Although both Actors were careful not to take away his spotlight, Mortensen did say in the Press Room introducing Cronenberg rather succinctly, “I don’t think he’s gotten the universal recognition he deserves”, proudly flaunting some Montreal Canadiens Merchandise. The ground-breaking Director indicated his focuses right now are his debut Novel, Consumed, which potentially will be made into a Film, and also his next release Maps to the Stars, which has its sights set on the Cannes Film Festival this Spring.
Curious to see what Executive Producer of Maps to the Stars, Martin Katz has to say about the eagerly-awaited Film starring Robert Pattinson, Mia Wasikowska, John Cusack and Julianne Moore? Interested to see where Anna Silk and Fan’s Choice Screen Star – Zoie Palmer – might be headed next on Lost Girl? Will Mr. D Star Gerry Dee be returning to Woodbine Racetrack to call a few more races? What does Mia Kirshner say about the second Season of Defiance? What were George Stroumboulopoulos‘ 2014 Canadian Screen Award Predictions?
Watch this Video of Mr. Will‘s Red Carpet Chats with all the above here:
Above all the celebrations, we had a blast admiring up-close the Red Carpet Fashions whether it be Pretty Little Liars Star Shay Mitchell in a daring plunging neckline, Jessica Paré stunning in Stella McCartney, Maria Bello beautiful in Nicholas Oakwell or Katheryn Winnick ravishing in red by Romona Keveza. Even Dina Pugliese of CITY‘s Breakfast Television was a Goddess in Jovani! Swoon.

I remember attending a Jim Carrey Autograph Signing with my Friend. Amidst the two-hour wait, an Acoustic Version of Aviici‘s Wake Me Up blared through the speakers. My Friend was mortified. “Why is this version so slow?!”, she nodded disapprovingly.
After a quick Wikipedia search, we learned that what we were listening to in fact was the Original Version of the Track, pre-Aviici. While that Mega-Producer currently is working with Madonna in the Studio on new material, the Californian Songwriter/Vocalist who penned and sang Wake Me Up, is launching a new phase in his Career (he has been at it for a bit) with the benefits of last year’s major exposure boost. His new Disc due in stores Tuesday, Lift Your Spirit!

It is the rise of an empire, indeed! The Sequel to 300 trumps the Box Office this weekend, bringing-in an outstanding $45 million in its Debut from 3,470 theatres. By comparison, its 2007 Predecessor starring Gerard Butler, grossed $70 million, but still this is no shame considering already overseas it has brought-in $30 million over three days too. Critics gave it 43% on the Tomatometer, while Audiences gave it an even “B” CinemaScore.
20th Century Fox‘s Animated Feature, Mr. Peabody and Sherman, in its debut garners $30 million from 3,934 theatres. Featuring the Voicework of Ty Burrell and Max Charles, the Film received a 77% rating on the Tomatometer, while Audiences similarly had great things to say, giving it a “yes” with an A CinemaScore also.
After dominating last week, Non-Stop starring Liam Neeson, slips to third spot this weekend with $15 million for Universal Pictures, just surpassing the $50-million mark in its second week of release.
The Lego Movie (which also features Neeson) continues to stand on strong footing with $11 million in its fifth week out for Warner Bros., just ahead of 20th Century Fox‘s Biblical-Drama, Son of God, with $9 million in its second week.
Frozen finds itself in seventh spot with $3 million now in its 16th week of release, undoubtedly boosted by last weekend’s Oscar win and maybe even John Travolta‘s infamous “Adele Mazeem” gaffe when introducing its Star, Idina Menzel.
12 Years a Slave also sees a post-Oscar boost following its Best Picture win, bringing-in $2.5 million for Fox Searchlight. In its 21-week run domestically, it has made over $$53 million.
Ride Along rounds-out the Top Ten for Universal Pictures with $1.9 million, showing tremendous staying power in its eighth week.
This looks delicious. CHEF premieres at the SXSW Festival in Austin tonight as its Opening Night Film. The Food Truck-Comedy starring/directed/written by Jon Favreau is about a Chef who loses his job, setting his sights on a Food Truck, at once trying to reunite with his estranged Family. How could this not be amazing?
See a Sneak Peek of CHEF below with Favreau inciting a Twitter War with the Competition:
Iconic Entertainer Sandra Bernhard is back in-town, bringing her Sandyland Show to the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts tonight and tomorrow. Known for her gritty brand of Humour, the Michigan-born Funnywoman rose to fame with her biting critique of Pop Culture and Politics.
Speaking of Politics, will she be poking-fun at Toronto Mayor Rob Ford at her Show? “The poor Guy’s been beaten up… He’s a bit of a mess”, she says to Dina Pugliese on CITY‘s Breakfast Television earlier this morning. Bernhard comments also on Social Media, when she realized she wanted to be a Comedienne and her Daughter also in the Interview. Watch here.
Shortly after, she made her way north to Global Television‘s The Morning Show (National Edition), where she co-hosted today. Although she was in a rush going live-to-air, she fulfilled her promise coming out afterwards, graciously signing some Autographs and posing for Photos before heading to her next Taping. She looks amazing, can we agree? Watch her on The Morning Show here.
Tickets are still available to Bernhard‘s Sandyland Show. Click here for more.
