By Siobhán Rich for Mr. Will Wong
Some people think that writing for Mr. Will Wong is all glamour, red carpets, and movie screenings. What they don’t realize is that sometimes he sends you on really tough assignments like eating pastries at Toronto’s premiere éclair boutique. That is why last night I found myself sampling delectable éclairs at Nugateau on Queen Street West.
Drawing inspiration from the autumn colours of the region, Nugateau’s pastry chefs have created a Fall/Winter collection of éclairs designed to tempt and delight the most discerning of palates. The centre piece of collection is a pairing they call Romeo and Juliet. Romeo is reminiscent of a Ferrero Rocher with its alunga and hazelnut praline ganache with gianduja glaze complete with a delightful crunch provided by chopped hazelnuts and praline grains. On the other side of this fateful romance, Juliet is created with Tanzanian single origin 75% dark chocolate cremeux and a raspberry compote.
Since Nugateau’s chefs create everything in house from the pastry to the glazes and flavoured creams featured in all their éclairs, it is easy to see why they have become so popular with dessert loving Torontonians. Boasting flavours ranging from Matcha Yuzu to the whimsical Cookies ‘n Milk these éclair wizards have created true magic in their kitchens.
If savoury is more up your alley, then I highly recommend the Croque Éclair: a sinful combination of smoked ham, gruyere, and béchamel with onion confit and mustard. Boring old sandwiches for lunch will never suffice again!
From their iconic The 6ix Maple Crème to their delightfully tart Lemon Bergamot Meringue, Nugateau’s scrumptious Fall/Winter collection is a surefire hit. I know I’ll be heading back for seconds thirds again soon.

Humber College students are in for the greatest treat ever as student-run organization IGNITE hosts their biggest Comic Expo ever in partnership with Stadium Comics. Brett Dalton who stars as Agent Grant Ward on Marvel‘s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., headlines the fun which also features a Pokémon Station, Virtual Reality and a Cosplay Costume Contest. Wish my school had all that!
We ran into Dalton downtown tonight by chance as he was prepping for another visit to the school tomorrow. “I get approached for photos but not often enough for it to be annoying!’, the fan-friendly star says posing graciously for a Pic taken by his friendly colleague.

Here he comes again! Scottish-American star of stage, screen and best-selling Author Alan Cumming returns to Toronto to promote his latest literary endeavour, You Gotta Get Bigger Dreams. After doing some press earlier today for Book, the fan favourite star of The Good Wife met Fans at Indigo Manulife Centre. The Book recalls many of his life adventures in 45 photo essays from bonding with Elizabeth Taylor to his travels in Syria. Cumming says, “They aren’t the scary people, they are escaping from the ‘scary people'”, recounting some of human rights atrocities he saw and heard of from his friends there.
The famous Vegan also recalls a time where he filmed in Italy Julie Taymor‘s TITUS with Jessica Lange, both relieved for the flight to take-off after an ordeal where his flight out of Rome wasn’t being paid for by the production. After throwing apologetically what he calls a “diva fit”, threatening not to show up to set, he finally got his way. We won’t name who but one castmate even got away with smuggling a bird in to America!
Despite there being a bit of worry making his 7:30 PM deadline to leave (maybe to catch Adele??), he made his way in good time through the queue of Fans!

With its origins tracing back to 1949 as a men’s-only clothing shop in Japan, UNIQLO has branched into a global phenomenon, its brand of stylish casual wear for men, women and children, taking the world by storm in over 14 countries. Major markets in Asia, United Kingdom, Australia and the United States among other countries have already been enjoying the retailer’s fashions for years now. Now Canadians will discover their amazing looks and value as the first-ever UNIQLO CANADA shop at CF Toronto Eaton Centre opens tomorrow, Friday, September 30, 2016, with Yorkdale unveiling the second store in October 2016.
Operating over two levels at the Eaton Centre space, positioning it eye-level with giants like H&M and Nordstrom, we had the great privilege of being among the media-types and influencers who got to shop first at the store, charmed with Sake-infused Cocktails, the tunes of Sony Music Canada artist Tyler Shaw, the beats of DJ Phil V and delicious East-meets-West nibbles. While feeling very familiar and GAP-like in layout, we were delighted at the practicality, comfort and sophistication of offerings.
While much of the store is geared right now towards Fall/Winter wear with their signature Ultra-Light Down vests, jackets and coats front and center, their products had a uniform look, each different enough from the other to target Canadian’s discerning taste for customizability.
We are banking also on their sturdily-crafted and thick 2-Way Stole, which also can be worn as a poncho, to take Torontonians by storm this Fall. Several of their blazers, which border on casual in terms of comfort, but certainly presentable enough for the office, will dictate the new definition of “business casual” in the workplace. Women’s fashions were flowy, yet at once form-flattering and we think Toronto ladies will love some of the pleated skirts which look elegant and substantial enough to endure our unforgivingly-indecisive weather.
Children’s and Babywear were too adorable to describe and we can only hope a few pet products are in development as we want our dogs and cats in on the Uniqlo–nomenon too!
