This True Crime Thriller is about Charles Cullen (Eddie Redmayne) a nurse who over a 16-year career confessed to killing 29 people, although the actual number is believed to be much higher. The Film follows Amy (Jessica Chastain), a nurse who worked with Charles and helped the detectives get their confession.
Director Tobias Lindholm, making his English language Feature Debut, creates an enthralling murder mystery Film. He opens on a patient dying with Charles, in his uniform, eerily looking on while many doctors and nurses try to save the life. There’s no doubt that something isn’t quite right with him. It’s this knowledge that we carry with us throughout, even in his tender moments, mostly shared with Amy. Redmayne is cast perfectly in this highly mysterious performance that captivates.
Screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns brilliantly adapts the novel The Good Nurse: A True Story of Medicine, Madness, and Murder by Charles Graeber. Her tight Script builds tension while highlighting America’s health care system. We learn that Amy must complete her first year at the hospital before getting health insurance for her life-or-death heart transplant. This makes The Good Nurse more than your typical true crime chiller. It critiques the unjust health care system and insurance requirements.
Then we arrive at the detective part of The Good Nurse. It digs into unethical health care practices within the institutions. We fully become aware of exactly what Charles did, which is shocking and horrifying. However, the investigation exposes how these hospitals that employed Charles, were culpable. For instance, the hospital he works at with Amy refuses to hand over the evidence of their internal investigation. They had suspicions about he committed the murders, yet, they refused to own up to it. And in their refusal, they allowed him to continue.
He was only stopped due to the fearless help of Amy. Once again Chastain is extraordinary. The complexity of her performance is immense and she lands every beat. It’s mesmerizing to watch her come to the realization of the horrific acts he committed. Both Chastain and Redmayne deliver tour-de-force performances.
The Good Nurse screens as follows at TIFF ’22:
Fri, Sep 16 IN-PERSON at TIFF Bell Lightbox at 9:00 am
Sat, Sep 17 IN-PERSON at Roy Thompson Hall at 11:00 am
Sun, Sep 18 IN-PERSON at TIFF Bell Lightbox at 12:00 pm

Yesterday afternoon, Fans around the world were privileged enough to be part of the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Global Fan Event at participating cinemas or through Facebook Live and YouTube for those unable to make it out to the sold-out affair. This celebration showed some exclusive new footage as well as questions answered by select cast members of the Film including Colin Farrell, Jon Voight, Dan Fogler, Katherine Waterston, Alison Sodul and of course Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne. Director David Yates and Producer David Heyman also joined the fun.
The Event itself offered some interesting insight on what to expect and what we can expect from the newest installment and wizarding world we have all come to fall in love with, but the real excitement came at the very end when David Yates made a very exciting announcement regarding the future of Newt. After Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, we can expect Newt in a new adventure somewhere other than New York.
No Harry Potter universe event would be complete if J.K Rowling did not make an appearance, and the massive bombshell news she dropped made it even more exciting. Rowling announced that there will be FIVE Fantastic Beasts Movies, and no one knew of this news from the Cast. The best reaction to this news came from Newt himself, Eddie Redmayne, who was just over the moon joyous and happy from the news.
Now the real meat of the experience, something that was privileged to the audiences in theatres the new footage from the Film. We saw the first five minutes of the Film then snippets from throughout the Film. Without giving anything away, it looks incredible and possesses the same magic and adventure as the Harry Potter Films have. It is truly going to be an amazing experience. Also after the presentation, audiences for the first time were able to see Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone for the first time in IMAX and that was truly something magical. Currently there is a week-long promotion in IMAX showing all eight Harry Potter Films, visit www.cineplex.com for more details on that. As well tickets for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them are currently on-sale!
Warner Bros. Pictures Canada release FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM in theatres on Friday November 18, 2016, with special advance previews on Thursday November 17, 2016.
No Film at TIFF ’15 affected me greater than the latest from Oscar-winning Director, Tom Hooper. The Danish Girl is a biographical drama based on the memoir of Lili Elbe, known as one of the first recipients of gender reassignment surgery. Although much of the story centers on the build-up to the surgery, what we witness first and foremost is a heartbreaking love story between two Artists, Gerda (Alicia Vikander) and Einar (Eddie Redmayne) and the deeply-fascinating outcome of what happens when the latter comes to the realization that he is meant to be a woman. We witness Einar‘s deep torment as he is forced to suppress his female self, Lili, at the initial disapproval of his wife and society. Gradually, Einar dissipates and Lili fights to assert her place in the world. Matters are complicated further when a love triangle develops with the surfacing of Einar‘s childhood friend, Hans (Matthias Schoenaerts).
Vikander commands at every turn as she fights the urge to be angry in favour of unconditional love and support to Einar/Lili. She becomes all consumed in love to the point she loses herself much like her husband. Her performance places her front and center in the upcoming Awards Season race and we were delighted. Redmayne in a performance which somewhat echoes some sentiments in his Oscar-winning brilliance in The Theory of Everything as an all-consuming husband, is devastatingly-convincing in Einar/Lili‘s vulnerability. The Danish Girl is a Film which leaves you mesmerized and it is impossible not to leave completely fixated and pensive after the credits roll.
Above this, the cinematography by Danny Cohen, who reunites again with Hooper after Les Misérables and The King’s Speech, is awe-inspiring and in itself becomes almost like a character in the Film. An important, empathetic piece on a topic very much at the forefront of the social conscience today.
Rain continues to literally put a damper on TIFF ’15 Festivities, but hopefully this is the end of it! Cloudy skies aside, Toronto continues to light-up on star power alone and here’s some stars we spotted today!
Kristen Stewart at TIFF ’15 for Equals looking amazing. Unfortunately due to lateness and the weather she didn’t’ come by to greet fans but she certainly was a vision!
Nicholas Hoult. We’ve had the handsome English Actor here many times, but it was a pleasure seeing him on the Carpet again today for Equals alongside Stewart.
Drew Barrymore is effortlessly-stylish as she attends a Photo Call for Catherine Hardwicke‘s tear-jerker Miss You Already.
Can we all just take a second here and admire Toni Collette‘s amazing hair? She also was here for Miss You Already. Her performance will slay you.
