Review by Amanda Gilmore for Mr. Will Wong
In eighteenth-century upstate New York, Abigail (Katherine Waterston) is grieving the loss of her daughter. She begins keeping track of her mundane rural life and interactions with her husband, Dyer (Casey Affleck), by journaling. Her grief slowly begins to alleviate when Tallie (Vanessa Kirby) and her husband Finney (Christopher Abbott) move into a neighbouring cabin.
Director Mona Fastvold creates a beautiful film that depicts grief and love. She works from the Script, written by Ron Hansen and Jim Shepard, that shows life as a settler in the eighteenth-century. Through these four characters, the Film is filled with the knowledge of the oppression and expectations of women during the time. Fastvold perfectly captures this life with stunning shots of candlelit cabins and breathtaking landscapes.
A lot of the speech in The World to Come is from the narration of Abigail. As she keeps her journal, the audience hears her hidden emotions and desires. It’s difficult to execute heavy narration on-screen but Fastvold, Hansen, Shepard and the powerful voice work from Waterston make it an asset. It’s used as a way to get exposition across swiftly and it’s delivered emotionally by Waterston.
This sweeping romance is a captivating watch due to the stellar performances from its ensemble. Waterston is brilliant as the restrained Abigail. She has the ability to show both Abigail’s sorrow alleviating and her love blossoming for Tallie through each interaction. Kirby gives a commanding performance as the confident and direct Tallie. The use of her stature and voice is captivating. Waterston and Kirby work perfectly together and have powerful chemistry.
Additionally, The World to Come takes a look male fragility during the eighteenth-century. They do this primarily through the character of Finney. His anger is targeted towards Tallie due to her not doing household ‘duties’ and producing a child. As this was expected of women at the time, Finney becomes enraged by Tallie. And furthermore, when Tallie desires to spend more time with Abigail than him. Abbott is brilliant in this dislikable role.

Yesterday afternoon, Fans around the world were privileged enough to be part of the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Global Fan Event at participating cinemas or through Facebook Live and YouTube for those unable to make it out to the sold-out affair. This celebration showed some exclusive new footage as well as questions answered by select cast members of the Film including Colin Farrell, Jon Voight, Dan Fogler, Katherine Waterston, Alison Sodul and of course Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne. Director David Yates and Producer David Heyman also joined the fun.
The Event itself offered some interesting insight on what to expect and what we can expect from the newest installment and wizarding world we have all come to fall in love with, but the real excitement came at the very end when David Yates made a very exciting announcement regarding the future of Newt. After Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, we can expect Newt in a new adventure somewhere other than New York.
No Harry Potter universe event would be complete if J.K Rowling did not make an appearance, and the massive bombshell news she dropped made it even more exciting. Rowling announced that there will be FIVE Fantastic Beasts Movies, and no one knew of this news from the Cast. The best reaction to this news came from Newt himself, Eddie Redmayne, who was just over the moon joyous and happy from the news.
Now the real meat of the experience, something that was privileged to the audiences in theatres the new footage from the Film. We saw the first five minutes of the Film then snippets from throughout the Film. Without giving anything away, it looks incredible and possesses the same magic and adventure as the Harry Potter Films have. It is truly going to be an amazing experience. Also after the presentation, audiences for the first time were able to see Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone for the first time in IMAX and that was truly something magical. Currently there is a week-long promotion in IMAX showing all eight Harry Potter Films, visit www.cineplex.com for more details on that. As well tickets for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them are currently on-sale!
Warner Bros. Pictures Canada release FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM in theatres on Friday November 18, 2016, with special advance previews on Thursday November 17, 2016.
Okay, we get it. Some of us weren’t happy with Steve Jobs Biopic, jOBS. This however looks the part. Universal Pictures have just released this Teaser for upcoming JOBS, out this Fall. And if we’re lucky enough we just might see it do the Festival Circuit. TIFF ’15, anyone?

Set backstage at three iconic product launches and ending in 1998 with the unveiling of the iMac, Steve Jobs takes us behind the scenes of the digital revolution to paint an intimate portrait of the brilliant man at its epicenter.
Steve Jobs is directed by Academy Award® winner Danny Boyle and written by Academy Award® winner Aaron Sorkin, working from Walter Isaacson’s best-selling biography of the Apple founder. The producers are Mark Gordon, Guymon Casady of Film 360, Scott Rudin and Academy Award® winner Christian Colson.

Steve Wozniak, who co-founded Apple, is played by Seth Rogen, and Jeff Daniels stars as former Apple CEO John Sculley.

It may have taken a while, but things are heating up quickly for British-born, American-based Actress Katherine Waterston, seen widely as a Contender in the Best Supporting Actress category. Best known for her work on HBO‘s Boardwalk Empire and a slew of Indie Films, Waterston was handpicked by Paul Thomas Anderson (The Master, Boogie Nights) in the breakthrough role of Shasta Hepworth in upcoming Awards Contender, INHERENT VICE.
Waterston was in Toronto promoting the new Film with only a select few outlets granted access to the Actress including interviews on CBC’s Q Radio, E! and eTalk. She also appeared at an invite-only screening of the Film at TIFF Bell Lightbox, which had some on Twitter comparing her performance to that of Rooney Mara‘s Oscar-nominated work in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. The statuesque and elegant Waterston was seen lunching at Parisian-style Hotspot Colette before flying out after an abbreviated stay.
We had the pleasure of meeting Waterston quickly, complimenting her on some of her winning and risky fashion choices on the Red Carpet thus far this Awards Season! See some of her jawdropping looks here and here.

Warner Bros. Pictures Canada release INHERENT VICE on Christmas Day in Toronto, additional Cities to follow.

How INHERENT VICE has remained off our radars this long is a bit of a mystery, but brilliant Director Paul Thomas Anderson‘s latest effort is about to be seen next month at the New York Film Festival, where it is set to debut. Seen in this just-released still is a barely-recognizable Reese who must be applauded for re-inventing herself. Fall 2014 is slated with a triple-punch from the Oscar Winner with WILD, THE GOOD LIE and now THIS! Joaquin Phoenix always makes our day and it’s awesome seeing him in something more on the comedic side here.
Official Synopsis:
When private eye Doc Sportello’s ex-old lady suddenly out of nowhere shows up with a story about her current billionaire land developer boyfriend whom she just happens to be in love with, and a plot by his wife and her boyfriend to kidnap that billionaire and throw him in a loony bin…well, easy for her to say.
It’s the tail end of the psychedelic `60s and paranoia is running the day and Doc knows that “love” is another of those words going around at the moment, like “trip” or “groovy,” that’s being way too overused—except this one usually leads to trouble.
With a cast of characters that includes surfers, hustlers, dopers and rockers, a murderous loan shark, LAPD Detectives, a tenor sax player working undercover, and a mysterious entity known as the Golden Fang, which may only be a tax dodge set up by some dentists… Part surf noir, part psychedelic romp—all Thomas Pynchon (who wrote the Novel which the Film is based upon).
First of all, did we read right? ERIC ROBERTS?! Who not too long ago was in Toronto filming Suits?!? Can we say career resurgence??! This looks positively too good to be true.
Secondly, can we name the Cast? Look at this: Joaquin Phoenix, Katherine Waterston, Reese Witherspoon, Jena Malone, Owen Wilson, Benicio Del Toro, Eric Roberts, Maya Rudolph, Martin Short and Josh Brolin. The last time we see Phoenix and Witherspoon on-screen together, Oscars got handed out…

Was that Josh Brolin ordering a Pancake in Japanese? That’s how you know you’ve found a Winner!
