Opening in Toronto on the Danforth just before the Pandemic and pivoting quickly to sustainably-packaged takeaway, PAPYRUS – Eat Like an Egyptian quickly has won a loyal fanbase in its short time in-operation. The stellar Google Reviews time and again speak for themselves.
Finally, as we navigate our way through these challenging times, the compact establishment located at 337 Danforth Avenue, just west of Chester Station, is ready now to welcome patio dining and indoor dining inside its Pharaoh’s Den. Decorated thoughtfully with nods to history including Rosetta Stones, Chef Am Elimam’s pride and attention to detail and the history of Egyptian cuisine are palpable. If you’re lucky, some nights you even get live Music.
He tells us at a Private Tasting that his goal is to serve fresh-tasting Cuisine, introducing Egyptian food further into the mainstream. Even we admit, while our tastebuds are adventurous, we still don’t know much about it- other than having been delighted by Tut’s, which rightfully has earned its popularity with the Toronto set with its Egyptian Street Food, namely sandwiches and Dukka Fries. The Cuisine though still is uncharted territory for many of Toronto’s discerning palates.
Chef Amr actually only fully realized his passion for cooking late in life and he tells me this is actually his fourth career incarnation, after spending time in the corporate world. And you can sense it. He has a deep understanding of flavour and texture, working often with a Holy Trinity of Garlic, Olive Oil and Beans.
He didn’t start this restaurant simply to build a franchise and make money. He created a restaurant to make food for people who love food. The Menu isn’t extensive, but focuses on doing a few things very well. And believe it or not, very few of the items on the Menu contain meat. They are so flavourful and hearty that you forget that you’re missing the meat.
Some recommendations from the exquisite, unique Menu at PAPYRUS – Eat Like an Egyptian:
Certainly is worth a try, and you won’t leave hungry. With most items priced between $10-$20, this is an invitation for you to try more and share. A gem waiting to be discovered.

In just over six years, SHU KINGDOM HOTPOT have experienced exponential success, opening 150 locations in 60+ cities across China. Just earlier this year, they opened their first ever North American branch right here in Scarborough, and are ready to win the hearts of Hotpot-loving Canadians. And there are many, believe me!
Hotpot is one of my favourite things. I love the communal experience of gathering around the pot with family and friends, having casual conversations and getting a full belly. If you’ve never had it before, think Korean BBQ… sorta. But Hotpot is soup-based instead of grilled. You take a variety of ingredients like meats, vegetables and a variety of accoutrements, which you cook them in a fondue-like manner. Typically, the soup base is numbingly-spicy, but there are mild options for those who can’t take the heat. Hotpot is a favourite in cooler months, but loved year-round.
SHU KINGDOM GENERAL HOTPOT boasts a high-grade selection of meats, including Sliced Ribeye and Chuck Eye. What makes them stand-out is their opulent, romantic presentation. Their Ribeye alone tops more than 1 million orders a year in China alone! And we get it. Their beef is so succulent and tender. Skewered delicacies are bundled into special Bashu Combo platters, which are part of the order including shrimp, aorta, tripe, gizzards and kidneys.
As the menu is A la Carte, you get a higher-grade of meats than you would an an All You Can Eat-type Hotpot establishment. We love that for those who want to try different soup types and we chose a Regular Spicy Soup which was just right, plus a mild Pork Bone Soup. As the food here is inspired by the flavours of Sichuan province (Chengdu specifically), it is only fitting the that they bring the fire Sichuan cuisine is known for!
The decor even at this space is stunning. The bright, red lantern-lit space pays homage to Bashu Culture, just like its menu. The culture has a long history of over 3000 years, claimed to be one of the cradles of modern Chinese. The restaurant uses the legendary tale “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” as a point of reference in its aesthetic. This truly is an experience!
The venue is spacious and seating is comfortable with many private booths and VIP Rooms. The Menus is mindful even, giving cooking time recommendations for each ingredient. Overcooking your meats can drastically alter your enjoyment and experience, showing their attention to detail. Above all this, we’ve never seen this level of presentation in food at a Hotpot ever. Simply dynamic, and never to be forgotten!
See some highlights from our experience at SHU KINGDOM GENERAL HOTPOT:
What an amazing, ambient and satisfying time!
SHU KINGDOM HOTPOT is located at 390 Silver Star Blvd in Scarborough, and are open 12 PM-11 PM daily. Menu is available for Pickup and Dine-In. If you’re dining in groups, they have promotions on right now!

As part of Television Critics Week celebrations, we were invited to sit-in on a panel for upcoming TV Series adaptation HALO. The military Science-Fiction series based on the wildly-popular Video Game, takes us into the 26th century where humanity face the threat of the Covenant, an alien entity. Set to premiere March on Paramount+, the Series developed by Kyle Killen and Steven Kane, stars Pablo Schreiber, Bokeem Woodbine, Charlie Murphy and Natasha McElhone.
Joining us on the Panel were:
Kiki Wolfkill, Executive Producer
Steven Kane, Executive Producer
Justin Falvey, Executive Producer
Darryl Frank, Executive Producer
Pablo Schreiber
Natascha McElhone
Yerin Ha
Bokeem Woodbine
Charlie Murphy
Executive Producer Kiki Wolfkill talks about adapting this beloved Video Game to TV and what’s involved with setting-up the backdrop in which this story is set against.
Wolfkill: “Adapting a beloved Video Game with 20 years of history, story and character development is a daunting task, but really gratifying. For us we looked at ‘How do we take the essence of the gaming experience and really express it in our own unique voice?’. From that, we set-out to build a 26th century Sci-Fi world with brutal aliens and spartan super-soldiers, artificial intelligence, military politics and ancient mystery. But at the same time against that backdrop, really tell some really personal stories and explore the humanity or lack thereof, of our characters.”.
Pablo Schreiber stars in the lead role of Master Chief and talks about landing this coveted gig.
Schreiber: “We’re very squarely in the Halo universe. It’s a show for people who love the Halo universe and just discovering the Halo universe. Master Chief is one of the most iconic and heroic characters of all time. The opportunity to explore those themes and ideas, the relationship between the warrior and the hero – what’s the similarities and where do they diverge, is what’s really interesting for me.”.
He also talks about the experience working with his Castmates on the Series.
Schreiber: “It was really wonderful to get to work with all the performers. Obviously Chief and Cortana have a very special relationship, but the history between Chief and Halsey, played by the wonderful Natasha McElhone obviously is another central core relationship. Our work together was wonderful. The Chief and Soren have this very tortured and long history as well, but also very close. So to get to do that with Bokeem also was very amazing. We also introduce a couple new characters into the lore. To get to bring Charlie‘s character Makee in and I have a lot of stuff with her towards the end of the season, is really fantastic and Charlie is amazing. And this incredible new performer Yerin Ha, came in and is playing Kwan Ha, which is a brand-new character created for our Show. To get to do all of that, to create history and continuity of the franchise, and to create all these new characters, all of it was such a thrill.”.
Natasha McElhone talks about what Halo means to her and her family.
McElhone: “I have a strange relationship with the game in that my first experience with it was finding my husband with my then one-year-old son, sitting on his lap playing Halo when he should’ve been cooking, so it was a distraction – a beloved one – in our household. So it’s very strange that it should come back around and here I find myself as part of the team bringing it to TV which is thrilling for all my kids because they all love to play Halo.”.
She tells us about her character, Dr. Catherine Elizabeth Halsey.
McElhone: “In terms of Halsey, everyone knows who she is in the game. I hope I’m building from that and the legacy that Jen (Taylor) helped create when she voices her in the game. We were trying to deep some of the other elements of the characters and perhaps build a few more branches on the tree. I’m definitely seeing her as someone who’s misunderstood.”.
Bokeem Woodbine talks about his connection the Video Game and his character, Soren.
Woodbine: “He’s enterprising, innovative, hard-working, industrious, not without some charm. He’s got his eyes on the prize at all times. As far as Halo‘s concerned, I remember when it first came out, all my friends were Halo heads. I didn’t necessarily play myself, but I spent countless hours hanging out. None of us were rich back then, so I remember hanging-out in little ratty apartments, watching my friends play Halo for hours. It’s a lot of fun to watch people play because the landscape is ever-changing, kinda like watching a movie. So to be able for this to come around and participate in it, is really a thrill.”.
Justin Falvey, Executive Producer tells us on the long-term plan for the Series.
Falvey: “Our intention is to produce several seasons of the Show. There’s a lot of story to tell. And as Pablo indicated, we have so many buckets we can dip into with these pre-existing characters and these new characters. Talk about a world-building show, it speaks on every level to execute that wonderfully with the people we have in place. Hopefully we’ll be doing this for some time now.”.
HALO premieres March 24, 2022 on Paramount+.

Review by Amanda Gilmore for Mr. Will Wong
Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao’s back with another knockout hit, Eternals. The Eternals are a race of immortal beings with superhuman powers. They’ve secretly lived on Earth for thousands of years battling Deviants, ruthless creatures determined to harm humanity. The Eternals won this battle centuries ago and have since separated to live among humans. However, when Sersi (Gemma Chan) encounters a Deviant in London she reunites her family to battle the evil.
There are many things to — marvel — at with Eternals particularly Zhao who accomplishes the tremendous feat of introducing us to this big batch of characters. Unlike with The Avengers, this is the first film for each of The Eternals. Zhao makes us care and connect with each member by giving enough time to get to know them. This is executed with meticulous dialogue and flips in time. It’s this flipping in time that brings about the theme of humanity.
In the past, these Eternals are purely immortal beings. In the present day, they’ve been living among and like mortals, learning to appreciate humanity. This is perfectly shown through tech genius Eternal Phastos, brilliantly played by Brian Tyree Henry. In the present, he lives with his partner and child. He’s fully assimilated into human life. Each member, in their individual way, has had time to embrace humanity. All but one. Sprite (knockout young talent Lia McHugh) is stuck in a teen’s body, unable to age. She’s watched other members of her family live a fully human life. Her desire for this opportunity shows us how lucky and fragile life is.
By the time we arrive at the action-packed final battle we understand and care for each Eternal. We know their stakes in the fight, both individual and for the common goal. Zhao expertly shoots this battle with energy and gives each member their individual moment. This final fight stands out from other battles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe because of the lead Eternal, Sersi. She has the superpower of turning any object into another object (the visual effects are truly stunning throughout). However, it isn’t her superpower that makes her strong. It’s Sersi’s ability to emphasize that makes her the leader of the pack and able to save humanity. Chan is outstanding as the compassionate Sersi that learns how to trust and embrace her power.
Like with any good Marvel film there are many laughs to be had. Here they come from Kumail Nanjiani who brings his charm and impeccable comedic timing to Kingo. In the present, Kingo has lived an enriching human life by becoming one of the biggest stars in Cinema. Nanjiani is matched with comedic force Harish Patel who plays Kingo’s human valet Karun. Karun spends his time filming a behind-the-scenes Documentary of the Eternals. The back-and-forth between Nanjiani and Patel is comedic perfection.
The rest of the Cast give captivating performances. Salma Hayek’s Ajak is the calm yet powerful matriarch of this eclectic family. Angelina Jolie is captivating in moments where Thena is battling her memories that often cloud her judgement, as well as in wicked fight sequences. Don Lee is delightful as the strongest Eternal Gilgamesh. A highlight is when we catch up with him in the present and he’s cooking pies. Barry Keoghan gives a textured performance as mind control enabled Druig. Lauren Ridloff portrays the first deaf superhero in a Marvel film and is great as the speedy Makkari. Richard Madden gives Ikaris enough mystery to make us wonder where he was all these years. And Kit Harington show his comedic side when seeing a Deviant for the first time.
Overall, Eternals is a knockout addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a touching story of family, humanity and the fragility of life. It reminds us that when you love something you will protect it with everything you have. Additionally, Zhao’s love for pop culture is evident with playful nods to prior films and television shows throughout.
Marvel Studios, ETERNALS is in theatres November 5, 2021.

We’ve all heard of famous Chef Wolfgang Puck, but do we know him? Upcoming Documentary WOLFGANG is coming soon to Disney+!

As a teenager in Austria, Wolfgang Puck harnessed his love of cooking to escape the harsh rule of his stepfather. A local apprenticeship forged his path to train at a revered French restaurant before landing in America at age 24. In 70s Hollywood, Puck began working at Ma Maison, crafting an original menu around fresh ingredients, making the once-tacky eatery a popular, acclaimed darling. Still, the lack of acknowledgement from Ma Maison‘s owner pushed Puck to take the biggest risk of his career and open his first restaurant, Spago, an instant hit where famous clientele dote equally on Puck‘s new American cuisine and personality. Almost by accident, Puck created the concept of a “celebrity chef” with his decades-spanning television appearances, building a staggering global empire of restaurants, cafes and products for home cooks. Minari is an herb used in Korean cooking that dies in its first year and then thrives in its second season which is when it is harvested. It also purifies the soil and water around it. Screenwriter/Director Lee Isaac Chung’s real life grandmother planted a crop when she left Korea to join the family in the farm in the West and throughout many years and different vegetables grown, it was the one that grew the best. Semi-autobiographical in nature, MINARI is a poignant and heartwarming tale that charters the many travails and successes of a multi-generational Korean-American family as they attempt to settle roots on a farm in Arkansas in the 1980s. The Movie’s emotional impact packs a wallop that is resoundingly and simultaneously intimate and powerful.
Pursuing the American Dream of being his own boss, Jacob (Steven Yuen) transplants his wife Monica (Yeri Han) and two children Anne (Noel Cho) and David (Alan Kim) from California to a motor home deep in the heart of Arkansas where, almost immediately, they experience their first frightening tornado watch. While Jacob’s inexperience slows the process of cultivating the land, with the help of his devoutly Christian friend and employee Paul (played beautifully by Will Patton), his success is slow and steady, despite Monica’s growing resentment and unhappiness. Enter Grandma (Yuh-Jung Youn) from the homeland to help out.
It’s impossible not to love MINARI. Cinematographer Lachlan Milne bathes the landscape and interior scenes equally with subtlety and natural beauty and Composer Emile Mosseri scores every frame with refinement, never overpowering the moment with bombast. Chung’s Screenplay expertly interweaves intricate storylines and topics that range from displacement and cultural differences to theology to marital issues with humanity and compassion. The themes are universal; the results are perfection. As a Director, Chung elicits performances from his Cast that are transcendent. As Jacob, Yuen is magnificent and is matched pound for pound by his screen wife Han. There’s an innate honesty between the two of them that is astonishing to watch. The real break-out performances, though, come from the youngest member of the Cast and the oldest. As Grandma, Youn is bawdy and outspoken, as well as loving and doting and wise. Her performance sneaks-up on you and at one point it just hits that what you are watching is masterclass. David may be a rambunctious seven year-old with health issues and confused by the actions of his grandmother, but the more he sees, the more he learns. Kim will capture your heart.
While some of the dialog is in Korean, MINARI is a very American story about sentiments many families feel adopting a new country as their home. It is so much more than a Family Drama, it is a landmark piece of art. Elevation Pictures release MINARI on premium Digital and on-demand February 26, 2021.

Review by David Baldwin for Mr. Will Wong
Barb (Annie Mumolo) and Star (Kristen Wiig) are best friends who work and live together in their small Midwestern town. After they lose their jobs, they decide to take a beachside vacation to Vista Del Mar, Florida. There they meet the mysterious Edgar (Jamie Dornan) and all at once, their fancy getaway turns into a trip they will never forget.
Oh, and did I mention there is a young boy heading their way in a submarine housing 1000 killer mosquitos?
That is just a hint of the certifiable lunacy going on within Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar. I was not sure how Mumolo and Wiig would follow up Bridesmaids, but sincerely doubt this wild journey would have ever been a possibility. The chaotic structure of the Film should not work at all, from its stretched out prologue you will swear was ripped from another film (it isn’t) to its multiple(!) musical numbers. Somehow, it does work. And despite losing steam half way through (and overcooking a villainous plot), the pair have managed to concoct a wildly original vision that is just as hysterical as it is bewildering. How much joy you derive from the film will hinge entirely on whether you buy into how ridiculous the premise is – and your knowledge of what culottes are. If you are not on board for either of those things, you might want to vacation elsewhere.
Oh, and did I mention there’s a party sequence scored to a dance remix of “My Heart Will Go On” from Titanic?
While the random cameos packed into the Film cycle between being over the top, completely nonsensical or totally wasted, Mumolo and Wiig are terrific together and more than make up for any of the Film’s shortcomings. The way they play off one another is remarkable, each bringing a unique energy to every scene they appear in. Wiig dials it up past 11 as expected – teetering on the line of comedic greatness and being a nuisance. Mumolo is the exact opposite, playing things consistent and low-key. She gets many of the Film’s best lines and delivers them with infectious glee.
The real surprise here though is Dornan. He starts the Film in a dead serious Christian Grey mold, trying his best not to break out laughing at the situation he is thrust into. After he lands in Vista Del Mar, he breaks free of his ultra dramatic shackles and goes all in on the absurdity surrounding him. He is keenly-aware of the farcical nature of the Film and makes the most of every moment in increasingly hilarious ways. His comic timing is impeccable and his singing and dancing moves are making me crack up just thinking about them. He has a whole lot of fun and quietly manages to steal the film away from just about everyone.
Oh, and did I mention there’s a wise old crab voiced by Morgan Freeman?
Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar is outrageous and ridiculous. I laughed a whole lot more than I expected, but know it will not be for everyone. If you can buy into its silly premise, then you will have a blast watching Mumolo, Wiig and Dornan at his most uproarious. The Film is destined for Cult Movie status. I look forward to revisiting it with a group when we can sing, dance and act alongside it when we are finally able to go back to movie theatres.
Lionsgate Pictures release BARB & STAR GO TO VISTA DEL MAR on Digital and On-Demand on Friday, February 12, 2021.
