After making a splash in the notoriously-tough New York City market, MAMAN now is set to bring to Toronto’s Financial District a taste of home. The collaboration between Michelin-star Chef Armand Arnal, Entrepreneur/former Lawyer Benjamin Sormonte and Baker/Event Planner Elisa Marshall, has drawn raves already from The New York Times and Time Out New York in the nine months it has resided in Soho.
A marquee item at the French-inspired Eatery is their chocolate chunk cookie, but a quick perusal of their offerings including a decadent strawberry tart, a wide array of Quiche, soups, salads, Madeleines, Financiers, Sandwiches and more – suggests a repeat visit is warranted. A sip of their Cranberry-Thyme Pink Lemonade was light, blissful refreshment on an unforgivingly-hot day. Certainly do not forget their Coffee!
The space, located on the top floor of First Canadian Place with outdoor patio Seating – a rustic French Getaway amidst the bustling traffic of the area. Attention must be paid to details, including painted concrete flooring, and re-purposed giant whisk lamps dangling from the ceiling.
One of the Muses behind Maman was present opening day. Joelle Sormonte, mother of Benjamin, spent much of her time in the kitchen ensuring everything was up to standard. Its debut also was celebrated charitably with customers having the option to pay what they could and proceeds going to Pathways to Education Canada.
Maman opens Monday to Friday only. Click here for more details.

Always a pleasure! We spotted the lovely Katherine McNamara making her way back to the City after an extended July 4th weekend break in Los Angeles! The Actress, cast in the lead role of Clary Fray in upcoming The Mortal Instruments TV Series, Shadowhunters, continues filming in Toronto through October. The Series will air on ABC Family.
McNamara, sporting her red locks for the role and overalls, was nice enough to stop for Fans, signing one Autograph each and posing for a couple Selfies! She did indicate that the Series is asking her to be a bit more judicious in signing Autographs, hence imposing a limit for Autograph Seekers.
Definitely a name to keep a tab on. She next can be seen in The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials.

Fascinators! Fashion! Fast Horses! Fabulaaaas! Woodbine Racetrack was the place to be yesterday for the 156th running of North America’s most historic Horse Race, the Queen’s Plate. If there were any doubt of a sharp resurgence in the popularity of the Sport, record betting handles were reported yesterday with a total $11.06 million bet, smashing 2009’s $9.7 million record. Attribute it to new icon AMERICAN PHAROAH and his U.S. Triple Crown feat, or a smart advertising strategy – either way, Horse Racing is back.
SHAMAN GHOST would go-on to win the $1-million race restricted to three-year-old horses born in Canada, with a total twelve males and one female entrant. The handsome Frank Stronach-owned colt by the stallion Ghostzapper (also owned by Stronach) would sweep on by the competition late to win by 1 1/4 lengths under U.S. jockey Rafael Hernandez, paying $8.60 to a $2 bet. Race Favourite DANISH DYNAMFORMER almost looked like he was going to win the race under Patrick Husbands – who won the race with LEXIE LOU last year – but simply was outfinished. CONQUEST BOOGALOO who was thought widely to be a second-tier colt from the barn of champion trainer Mark Casse, rose to the occasion to finish third after a horrific start to the race which saw him shut-out. His two more high profile stablemates DANZIG MOON and CONQUEST CURLINATE were thought to be top contenders before suffering unfortunate fates, the former being euthanized tragically and the latter being retired after a brief but promising career.
Earlier on the 13-race Card, we saw promising two-year-old BELIVEAU win under Patrick Husbands for trainer Mark Casse and owners Windways Farm & Partners in the $150k Clarendon Stakes. Champion mare STRUT THE COURSE did exactly as her name suggests before a packed grandstand in the $200k Grade II Dance Smartly Stakes, under Luis Contreras for Owner John Unger and trainer Barb Minshall. The speedy GO BLUE OR GO HOME would win the $200k Highlander Stakes a second time (he won it in 2013) for Owners Jim & Susan Hill and trainer Reade Baker, with now-Woodbine-based jockey Alan Garcia. ALDOUS SNOW, named after Russell Brand‘s memorable character in Get Him to the Greek, would defend his title successfully in the $150k Singspiel Stakes for iconic Canadian outfit Sam-Son Farm, trainer Malcolm Pierce and jockey Eurico Rosa Da Silva.
From a fashion standpoint, we definitely saw men and women bringing their Fashion A-Game to the table, thanks to the high-profile presence of CTV‘s The Social, which had a tent set-up by the Hats & Horseshoes Party by Woodbine‘s scenic Walking Ring. Ladies put thought into their looks with a rainbow of Fascinators, while men are embracing tailoring and more form-fitting cuts. Hosts Cynthia Loyst, Lainey Lui, Traci Melchor and Melissa Grelo heightened the fun and prestige as several high-profile entertainment industry-types were seen taking-in the atmosphere. Rethink Breast Cancer also had a great presence with a tent set-up, hosting several influencial fashion-types, with ticket proceeds going towards research and awareness.

The timeless beauty that is Jane Fonda has graced our City once again after multiple visits to Toronto in recent years. The two-time Oscar Winner is in town for Sunday’s March for Jobs, Justice and the Climate. The walk beginning at Queen’s Park, which will see names like David Suzuki and Joel Plaskett supporting the cause as 100 groups representing hundreds of thousands of Canadians joining together as a Coalition. Fonda and Plaskett were inspired to join the cause after reading Naomi Klein‘s book, This Changes Everything.
By total coincidence we spotted Fonda with her grandson Malcolm and the two appear to be spending quality time together in the City, including a quiet, security-escorted Ramen Stop in the evening. This actually is our second time meeting the notoriously-private Screen Legend known for Classics like Barbarella, On Golden Pond, 9 to 5 , Coming Home, Klute and more recently the Netflix Hit Series Grace & Frankie – and she is just as kind and personable as we remembered her. She looks phenomenal, doesn’t she?
Fonda was last in Toronto last Fall for TIFF ’14, supporting This is Where I Leave You, in which she stars alongside Tina Fey.

eOne Films + Mr. Will are gonna turn-up the heat this Summer with a chance to see eagerly-awaited SOUTHPAW, starring both Jake Gyllenhaal + Rachel McAdams!
Screenings take place Monday, July 20, 2015 in Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Halifax, Victoria.
As an exclusive for Toronto Readers, there will be a Red Carpet Screening held on Thursday, July 9, 2015 with Rachel McAdams and Jake Gyllenhaal in-attendance. A Fan Pit also will be set-up for you to see for those who come early enough!
Official Synopsis:
From acclaimed director Antoine Fuqua (TRAINING DAY) and starring Academy Award® nominated Jake Gyllenhaal (NIGHTCRAWLER, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN) comes a story of tragedy, loss and the painful road to redemption… Billy “The Great” Hope (Gyllenhaal) is the reigning Junior Middleweight Champion whose unorthodox stance, the so-called “Southpaw,” consists of an ineloquent, though brutal, display of offensive fighting…one fueled by his own feelings of inadequacy and a desperate need for love, money and fame. With a beautiful family, home and financial security, Billy is on top both in and out of the ring until a tragic accident leaves his wife dead and sends him into a downward spiral. His days now an endless haze of alcohol and prescription drugs, his daughter taken by Child Services and his home repossessed by the bank, Billy’s fate is all but sealed until a washed up former boxer named Tick agrees to take the bereaved pugilist under his wing so long as he agrees to his strict ethos. Relentless and utterly committed to a fighter that thinks as much as he throws punches, Tick rebuilds Billy into a new man: one that is agile, fearsome and uncompromising in the ring while thoughtful, loving and disciplined outside of it. Now, as he works to regain custody of his daughter and mounts a professional comeback, Billy must face his demons head-on as he learns that, sometimes, your greatest opponent can be yourself.

The big day is near and we couldn’t be more thrilled! Sunday marks the 100% sold-out 156th running of the Queen’s Plate at Woodbine Racetrack. If you couldn’t get your tickets in advance, you can still join the fun at the Hats & Horseshoes Party near the Walking Ring or stand and watch the action! Bring your best hat or fascinator!
The Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell is the 29th Lieutenant Governor and she will be in attendance for the grand affair as 14 three-year-old horses compete for the $1-million purse. The Queen’s Plate is the most historic horse race in North America.
Without further a do, here is our official Queen’s Plate Field:

DANISH DYNAFORMER leads the pack as the Race Favourite after a smashing Plate Trial win for Hall of Fame Trainer Roger Attfield, at 3-1 odds and owner Charles E. Fipke. Marine Stakes winner SHAMAN GHOST is listed as second choice at 7-2 odds for owner Stronach Stables and Trainer Brian Lynch. Third in the morning line is Woodbine Oaks winner ACADEMIC at 5-1 for Bear Stables and Trainer Reade Baker. She is the lone filly in the Field. Winterbook Favourite AMI’S FLATTER who ran an impressive third this winter in the Florida Derby down south, is listed as fourth choice at 6-1.
Some unfortunate news broke today as probable Favourite CONQUEST CURLINATE suffered a career-ending injury training. Owner Ernie Semersky was devastated and poignant in his discontent, telling me that the situation he felt was completely avoidable as another horse training had veered into him. He plans to proceed further with the matter. The Illinois Businessman who is a strong proponent of animal welfare, shipping-in some expensive stock to Woodbine for us to enjoy, feels strongly that Queen’s Plate Contenders should have their own allocated timeslot, seeing the magnitude of the Race.

She practically is on every billboard and bus shelter right now, but surprisingly she just now is leaving an imprint on the mainstream conscience with her distinctive visage, including her trademark thick eyebrows. By this time next year, every one will know Cara Delevingne. She’s got eagerly-awaited PAPER TOWNS out later this month in which she stars alongside Nat Wolff.
The jet-set Supermodel who gradually is making her foray into Film, has been in and out of Toronto the past couple months filming DC Comics‘ surefire Smash SUICIDE SQUAD under the eye of David Ayer. Surprisingly though, she has remained under-the-radar, spotted out rarely other than some Photos of her as Enchantress on the set of the Film.
We’ve met the Supermodel multiple times including visits prior to New York for the Met Ball and she’s super-kind. Perhaps it’s the fatigue catching up with her, but the Star after partying hard at the Glastonbury Festival this weekend and appearing at Pal Taylor Swift’s 1989 Tour, looking a vision of exhaustion flying back to continue work on Suicide Squad.
Noticing Paparazzi upon arrival, she put-on her sunglasses, covered her face, apologizing sincerely for not stopping for Photos with Fans and then proceeded to flip Photographers the middle finger. This is unlike the Delevingne we know, but we get it. Perpetual daily hounding can turn someone this way. We love Cara and hope she is taking care of herself. Regardless, we’re still happy to have shared a moment with this hard-working young lady and know she does truly love her Fans regardless how she feels about having her Photo taken.

Easily one of my most-wanted Films of TIFF ’15, a new Teaser for SNOWDEN premiered earlier today! 90 seconds long, the Oliver Stone Film certainly isn’t short on intensity.
The script is based on the books The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World’s Most Wanted Man by Luke Harding and Time of the Octopus by Anatoly Kucherena; Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars.
