Although not as big as its 2014 predecessor, MAZE RUNNER: THE SCORCH TRIALS debuts atop the Box Office this weekend with $30 million for 20th Century Fox, from 3,791 theatres. The sequel garners a B+ CinemaScore from audiences and a 49% on the Tomatometer.
After a high-profile debut on the festival circuits in Venice and Toronto, BLACK MASS opens in second for Warner Bros. with $24.8 million from 3,188 theatres. The Drama about gangster Whitey Bulger gets a B CinemaScore and a better 79% on the Tomatometer.
In its second week out, horror THE VISIT places third with $10 million from 3,148 theatres for Universal Pictures. It has grossed $41 million domestically.
THE PERFECT GUY lands in fourth in its second week out with $9.8 million for Sony Pictures. Cumulatively it has made $41 million in North America.
From only 545 theatres, EVEREST debuts in fifth for Universal Pictures with $6.9 million. It gets a decent 73% on the Tomatometer.
CAPTIVE rounds-out the Top Ten for Paramount Pictures with $1.9 million from 806 theatres across North America. It earned 36% from Critics on the Tomatometer.
No Film at TIFF ’15 affected me greater than the latest from Oscar-winning Director, Tom Hooper. The Danish Girl is a biographical drama based on the memoir of Lili Elbe, known as one of the first recipients of gender reassignment surgery. Although much of the story centers on the build-up to the surgery, what we witness first and foremost is a heartbreaking love story between two Artists, Gerda (Alicia Vikander) and Einar (Eddie Redmayne) and the deeply-fascinating outcome of what happens when the latter comes to the realization that he is meant to be a woman. We witness Einar‘s deep torment as he is forced to suppress his female self, Lili, at the initial disapproval of his wife and society. Gradually, Einar dissipates and Lili fights to assert her place in the world. Matters are complicated further when a love triangle develops with the surfacing of Einar‘s childhood friend, Hans (Matthias Schoenaerts).
Vikander commands at every turn as she fights the urge to be angry in favour of unconditional love and support to Einar/Lili. She becomes all consumed in love to the point she loses herself much like her husband. Her performance places her front and center in the upcoming Awards Season race and we were delighted. Redmayne in a performance which somewhat echoes some sentiments in his Oscar-winning brilliance in The Theory of Everything as an all-consuming husband, is devastatingly-convincing in Einar/Lili‘s vulnerability. The Danish Girl is a Film which leaves you mesmerized and it is impossible not to leave completely fixated and pensive after the credits roll.
Above this, the cinematography by Danny Cohen, who reunites again with Hooper after Les Misérables and The King’s Speech, is awe-inspiring and in itself becomes almost like a character in the Film. An important, empathetic piece on a topic very much at the forefront of the social conscience today.
Review by Justin Waldman for Mr. Will Wong
Director Paco Cabezas takes the incredible screenplay from Max Landis (American Ultra, Chronicle) and creates absolute magic with the incredibly quirky fun romantic action comedy Mr. Right. Both Sam Rockwell and Anna Kendrick were certainly right in taking on this project as it is beyond entertaining.
We meet Martha (Anna Kendrick) who’s just gotten out of a relationship after her boyfriend cheated on her very blatantly. On a trip to the store one day shortly after she runs into Mr. Right (Sam Rockwell) who originally comes off incredibly-creepy and disturbing. However after his consistent persistence, Martha agrees to go on a date with him. The two get talking and right out of the gate he admits that he kills people, however Martha thinks he is just kidding and being ridiculous. The two proceed to fall for one another, until Martha begins to think that he actually is a psychopath and starts to become wary of him. However, this is where the Film gains its charm.
What makes Mr. Right work incredibly well aside from a brilliant absurdist script, is the chemistry that Rockwell and Kendrick have together. They are able to sell it so perfectly that it feels natural and not artificial making every scene they’re in together that much better. The comedy also exceeds extraordinarily well due to this incredible dynamic.
Mr. Right is an absolute delight from start to finish and is the perfect way to end off an incredible TIFF ’15. Make sure to make one of the three screenings during the end of the festival.
Formerly the Delicious Food Show, the Toronto Food & Wine Show takes place this weekend at Brickworks, promising even more culinary goodness than ever before! The show runs Friday, September 18, 2015 through Sunday, September 20, 2015. Several of Toronto’s finest restaurants, caterers and more comprise row upon row of amazing food offerings giving you a chance to try just-right portions of their menus. Toronto loves to eat and this event whets those appetites.
I had the pleasure of attending a Media preview quickly amidst the TIFF ’15 madness and as always, I have an amazing time. I devoured Duck Confit and Curry Lamb from Reds Tavern, Octopus a la Plancha from Far Niente, refreshing Iced Teas from Cluck, Cannoli from Holy Cannoli, Sturgeon from Acadian Sturgeon and Caviar Inc., a secret Double Peanut Butter Ice Cream Bar from Magnum, Smoked Beets on Cashew Cream from Tori’s Bakeshop, a curry canape from Bombay Street Food, Poutine from Beretta Kitchen and oh so much more! You must try EVERYTHING.
And don’t forget all the opportunites to connect with some of your favourite food personalities! Curtis Stone! Daniel Boulud! Matt Basile! Tyler Florence! Mark McEwan! Chuck Hughes! Gail Simmons! They’re among the several appearing at the Show!

We’re sad and in ways glad to see TIFF ’15 ending and although we love the excitement, it’s nice to get back to normal again. We worked ourselves into the ground and got quite ill, but we’re fighting it. We believe in transparency and admit this wasn’t the most exciting Festival in memory, but we had fun and look forward to TIFF ’16. With rain drowning-out a lot of the fun on the Festival’s three busiest days, fans were forced to make the most out of the situation and in these times we see truly who the champs of Hollywood truly are!
Whether it be Tom Hardy or George Clooney braving the wet for fans, few can argue that it’s absolutely worth the labour and effort for that one moment of connection.
Let’s look back at my highlights of TIFF ’15!
To say this was a chore is an understatement. I love Brie Larson and if she doesn’t know that by now then it’s time to invest in a billboard. This Selfie took nine tries dating back to 2013. Prior to TIFF ’15, many were asking who she was. Now that the festival is over, people are googling. She is amazing in Room, but I’ve enjoyed her work long before that. Expect her to be in the thick of the Best Actress race this Awards Season. Worth it? Totally.

We’re into TIFF‘s final weekend and spotted a few notable names in the City today. Tomorrow the Closing Night Gala, Mr. Right will commence at both the Princess of Wales Theatre and Roy Thomson Hall and we expect to see both Sam Rockwell and Anna Kendrick out for that.
See who we saw today!
Julie Delpy. Making an extremely rare visit to the City today, Actor/Director/Writer Julie Delpy was spotted out in a foot cast. She tells me she broke her foot recently and being the trooper she is, that wasn’t enough to stop her from promoting her latest, Lolo. You know her best for hers, Ethan Hawke and Richard Linklater‘s Before Sunrise Trilogy.
Dany Boon. This French-Comedian also stars in Lolo opposite Delpy and was just charming and as he greeted fans earlier, he let them know he also was recording the interaction for a French program.

Anya Taylor-Joy. This up-and-coming Actress is outstanding in hotly-buzzed horror, The Witch. She tells me that she loves Toronto and actually filmed that Movie locally.
Robert Eggers. This talented Filmmaker makes his feature debut with The Witch, which (pardon the pun) has critics and audiences all talking.

Review by Justin Waldman for Mr. Will Wong
Scott Cooper (Out of the Furnace, Crazy Heart) takes on his most ambitious project to date as he tells the story of James “Whitey” Bulger one of the most infamous South Boston gangsters in history. Black Mass tells this intense story featuring performances from the incredible Johnny Depp who restores his faith in his acting career with arguably the best performance of his career in the film. Black Mass is an incredible feature that sheds a light on a story that needed the light.
James “Whitey Bulger (Johnny Depp) is one of the most notorious gangsters of South Boston, while his brother Billy Bulger (Benedict Cumberbatch) was state senator, as the story depicts Whitey’s rise to the top of the criminal empire and how he managed to continually fall through the cracks of the justice system. Whitey always believed in not being a rat, because if you’re a rat you’re going to die and it will certainly not be pleasant. However, when rival gang families starting moving in on Whitey’s territory and old friend from Southie, FBI agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) offered him a deal where he provides information and in return gets protection from the FBI Whitey could not say no. Black Mass tells the story of how James “Whitey” Bulger became one of the most feared men in South Boston.
Johnny Depp who has chosen some interesting roles in the last few years of his career, have made people start to forget how talented he truly is. Thankfully though his performance in the film is nothing short of terrifying and riveting as he brings life to the screen as the sadistic psychopath. He has restored his faith in his fans with this performance, which could potentially get him a fourth Oscar nomination. Benedict Cumberbatch who plays the brother to Whitey also does a phenomenal job at hiding what he knows and trying to protect his brother while he is completely aware of the terrible human being that he is. Moreover, Joel Edgerton who never has managed to disappoint audiences shines through yet again delivering another compelling performance that keeps the audience at the edge of their seats. Other mentions to performances have to be mentioned with respect to Kevin Bacon who plays the FBI lead who allows the alliance that Connolly and Bulger have together, as Bacon delivers a stellar performance as well.
However, Black Mass has not only incredible performances that will surely receive buzz and potential academy recognition, but the directing in this two hour heavyweight is flawless as Scott Cooper never lets anything become too dull or diluted as the gruesomeness is not toned down for a lighter audience. The reason why this had to be done, is to truly show how terrifying and how much of a menace James “Whitey” Bulger truly was and still is.
Black Mass is an fascinating piece about a terrifying force. It is one of the better gangster films of recent years, and adds another great addition into the careers of everyone involved.
Just two days left of TIFF ’15, it’s only midday and we’re shocked how many stars still are milling about doing press. See who we’ve spotted this afternoon!
Keith Richards. The Rolling Stones rock legend made a spirited entrance at his Press Conference for Documentary Under the Influence, drawing lots of cheers. He’s got a jam-packed day with his Premiere tailgating the conference!
Cynthia Nixon. This one’s for all my Mirandas! I adore Sex and the City and made it a point of finding the gorgeous actress! She’s here for James White, premiering at Ryerson Theatre tonight.

With stars Departure-bound at the Airport, we still have a few here to visit as TIFF ’15 approaches an end. We’re still excited though nonetheless and hope you are too! See who we spotted today…
Analeigh Tipton. I first wrote a blog post about this former America’s Next Top Model finalist after being wowed by her in an advanced screening of Crazy.Stupid.Love. Her sweet, delightful awkwardness is irresistible and I have loved seeing her star gradually rise these past few years. Tipton is here for gambling drama Mississippi Grind starring alongside Sienna Miller, Ryan Reynolds and Ben Mendohlson, premiering tonight at Roy Thomson Hall. She promised me a Selfie after getting yanked away at the Damsels in Distress premiere here a few years ago and she kept her promise today. She looked AMAZING.
Charlie Kaufman. This Filmmaker is getting tons of acclaim for his TIFF ’15 entry Anomalisa and it was recently announced the stop-motion animated feature was picked-up by Paramount Pictures. It just won the Grand Jury Prize a Venice too. Here he is after a morning screening today, stopping to sign some autographs. Photo via our Dave Baldwin.
