#TIFF26: “HOPE” REVIEW

By Nicholas Porteous

In Na Hong-jin’s Hope, something monstrous has laid waste to a South Korean village, and various groups of police and concerned citizens descend on the aftermath to find the source of the rampant destruction. Before long, they’re confronted by a creature that throws cars like pebbles, running through houses that might as well be air. I won’t say too much more about the creature because Hope’s first (and best) hour is built around maintaining some of that specific mystery–but it’s big and bad!

Hope’s camerawork has relentless sweep, infusing every action sequence with a phenomenal, dangerous urgency. It’s glorious to behold–until you see the cgi. For a movie with such sharp real-world visuals and production design, it’s so unfortunate that the post-effects must be actively forgiven to engage with what’s happening. They feel more like pre-visualizations than final renders–an early PS4 game shoved into the middle of a top-notch fantasy movie world. And the physical versions of these otherworldly entities easily outclass their digital counterparts.

Graphics aside, Hope is full of memorable setpieces and characters. It’s so refreshing to see a movie like this allow its leads to be cowardly and disorganized. No one would be cool in this situation! As the movie carries on, Hope falls into some tropey traps. Fatal-seeming injuries are consistently shrugged off, and despite its undeniable bloat at just over 2.5 hours, the movie is resolute about not being a standalone experience with a satisfying conclusion. Nevertheless, it’s a flawed ride worth taking. Catch the special TIFF-eve screening if you can, but note that it’ll be in theatres on the same day.

#TIFF26: “LOVE OF YOUR LIFE” TRAILER

Today we get a new trailer for tiff ’26 selection LOVE OF YOUR LIFE from Rachel Morrison.

Starring Margaret Qualley, Aaron Pierre, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Gabriel Basso, and Catherine Keener

Directed by Rachel Morrison

Toronto International Film Festival Premiere September 13, 2026

Streaming Globally on Prime Video October 14, 2026

Love of Your Life is an emotionally expansive and aspirational romance about one woman’s journey after losing a great love of her life, and realizing that through grief, romance, adventure and self-discovery, true love can ultimately be found within yourself.

For Rachel Morrison the story struck deep on a personal level. “The idea that on the other side of profound grief can lie profound appreciation and gratitude is very real and very personal for me. I’ve had a lot of loss in my life, but that loss has been offset by so much love and vitality.”

Directed by Rachel Morrison (The Fire Inside), LOVE OF YOUR LIFE follows Maya (Margaret Qualley), whose chance encounter with Charlie (Gabriel Basso) sets in motion a sweeping romance and a future beyond anything she had imagined. When that future is suddenly upended, Maya is sent hurtling toward an unexpected new life—one that will force her to reckon with who she is, what she wants, and how to love again.

#FASHION: INTIMISSIMI AND CALZEDONIA COMING TO SHERWAY GARDENS THIS OCTOBER

Two of Italy’s most recognized fashion labels are officially making their Canadian debut. Intimissimi and Calzedonia are set to open their first Canadian boutiques at CF Sherway Gardens this October. Their arrival in Canada is led by ILT Group Inc., international retail partner for Oniverse, the Italian parent company behind both brands.

Both brands are known for their meticulous approach to fabric and craftsmanship, from Calzedonia’s fashion-forward legwear and swimwear to Intimissimi’s signature silk and lace. Their arrival at CF Sherway Gardens marks the first step in a broader Canadian expansion, giving shoppers the opportunity to experience both brands’ quality and design firsthand.

“Canadian consumers are increasingly looking for brands that combine quality, elevated design and a strong point of view, and we saw a real opportunity for both Intimissimi and Calzedonia in the market,” said Andrea Meoni, General Manager, ILT Group Inc. “These are beloved brands with significant international recognition. Our focus now is on thoughtfully building their presence in Canada. Opening at Sherway Gardens is an important first chapter, giving both brands a strong foundation on which we can grow awareness, affinity and long-term relevance across the country.”

Calzedonia is known for a young, cool and dynamic take on legwear, hosiery and swimwear, with a fashion-forward approach to craftsmanship across every category. The brand will launch with its Fall/Winter collection alongside its best-selling styles, including its sheer thermal tights, Nude Feeling 20 denier sheer tights, plus its collection of chic, affordable swimwear.

Intimissimi is known for a feminine, sophisticated and romantic take on intimate apparel, renowned for meticulous fabric research across silk, lace, modal and cashmere blends. The brand will launch with its Fall/Winter collection alongside customer favourites, including its iconic lingerie, underwear, silk sleepwear, and its viral basics like the boat neck modal cashmere ultralight top.

Together, the brands are part of Oniverse, which operates more than 5,500 stores across 57 countries. The CF Sherway Gardens location marks the beginning of both brands’ retail expansion into Canada.

“Canada has long been on our radar, and we know many Canadian consumers have already discovered Intimissimi and Calzedonia through travel, social media and international presence,” said Matteo Veronesi, Board Member, Oniverse. “Entering the Canadian market gives us the opportunity to bring the experience closer to home and introduce more Canadians to the brands’ Italian roots, from Calzedonia’s fashion-forward approach to legwear to Intimissimi’s signature lingerie, silk and elevated everyday essentials.”

The side-by-side storefronts at CF Sherway Gardens will serve as the brands’ first Canadian retail destination, joining the shopping centre’s established mix of international fashion and luxury brands.

“Welcoming Intimissimi and Calzedonia to CF Sherway Gardens aligns with our vision of curating a dynamic retail mix that includes world-class, sought-after brands,” said Sheila Jennings, General Manager, CF Sherway Gardens. “As the first Canadian destination for both retailers, we are proud to introduce these popular international names to the GTA and look forward to delivering the exceptional, elevated shopping experiences our guests expect.”

Both boutiques will operate as retail-only locations at launch, with Canadian e-commerce to follow. Intimissimi will continue its Canadian expansion with a second location at CF Toronto Eaton Centre in 2027.

Opening date announcement to follow.
