TIFF is delighted to announce the 2024 selection for the Wavelengths programme, and the TIFF Classics programme, presented by MUBI, and supported by Ontario Creates and the Canada Council for the Arts. The 49th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival, presented by Rogers, will take place September 5â15, 2024.
WAVELENGTHS
Highlighting visionary work from the worlds of international cinema and contemporary art, the Wavelengths programme includes a dynamic selection of 11 features, 3 shorts programmes, and a special in-cinema looped presentation. Intergenerational and regionally diverse, with emerging talents screening alongside legendary peers, the films in this yearâs selection range from a two-minute animation to a gripping 14-hour documentary, offering a mix of dazzling formal work, subversive narratives, and boldly political perspectives.
The 2024 Wavelengths programme is curated by Senior Curator Andréa Picard and Associate Curator Jesse Cumming, with contributions by Giovanna Fulvi, Nataleah Hunter-Young, and June Kim.

Feature film highlights include a number by esteemed Wavelengths alumni, among them the North American Premieres of Grand Tour by Miguel Gomes, The Damned by Roberto Minervini, and Pepe by Nelson Carlo de los Santos Arias.
Jessica Sarah Rinland also returns to the programme with Collective Monologue, alongside the North American Premiere of the queer, controversial ViĂȘt and Nam, by first-time Wavelengths filmmaker TrÆ°ÆĄng Minh QuĂœ. The 14-hour, compulsively watchable exergue – on documenta 14 from Greek filmmaker Dimitris Athiridi will be presented over three screenings.
Short film highlights include the World Premieres of Archipelago of Earthen Bones â To Bunya by Malena Szlam, and A Black Screen Too by Sobey Prizeânominated Rhayne Vermette, as well as the North American Premiere of Lawrence Abu Hamdanâs The Diary of a Sky. A pairing of work by legendary filmmakers Jean-Luc Godard and John Smith includes the formerâs final film ScĂ©narios, completed just before Godardâs death, and the World Premiere of Smithâs wry, moving Being John Smith.
Presented as a rare and unmissable special presentation, the programme is rounded out by celebrated Egyptian artist Wael Shawkyâs Drama 1882. A mesmerizing highlight of this yearâs Venice Biennale, the film (re)stages an anti-colonial uprising as a libretto across eight chapters and 45 hypnotic minutes. Drama 1882 will be presented looped in-cinema on Saturday, September 7, and admission will be free.
CLASSICS
TIFF Classics reunites audiences with iconic films from visionary filmmakers such as Srinivas Krishna, Raj Kapoor, and Atom Egoyan. Two newly restored international discoveries include Shahid Sohrab Salessâ Time of Maturity, and Lino Brockaâs Bona. In celebration of the centenary of auteur Raj Kapoor, known as The Greatest Showman of Indian Cinema, TIFF Classics presents the World Premiere 4K restoration of one of his most acclaimed films, AwÄra, which he directs and stars in.
Continuing TIFFâs year-long spotlight on Toronto New Wave filmmakers, Classics is screening the 4K restoration of Atom Egoyanâs The Sweet Hereafter; and Srinivas Krishnaâs Masala, a restoration that was made possible through Canadian Cinema â Reignited, a Telefilm Canada initiative, in partnership with TIFF. Lastly, Classics is honoured to present the World Premiere of the new 4K restoration of legendary filmmaker Frederick Wisemanâs documentary Essene.

Nobu Bar (ground level): Entering Nobu Toronto guests will be greeted by Nobu’s grand, yet intimate bar and lounge, with 57 seats enveloped in an alluring dark atmosphere. The bar’s main centrepiece is a breathtaking 28 foot bronze chainmail Lasvit chandelier that gracefully descends from the mezzanine level imitating the elegant drapery of a Japanese kimono as well as handcrafted Kawara Japanese roof tiles which dress warmly lit pillars that elevate the two-storey high bar.
Restaurant bar & outdoor terrace (mezzanine level): Continuing the journey upstairs towards the main dining room, guests are met with a 20-seat sake bar area, while passing by an intimate terrace reminiscent of serene urban Japanese gardens. Bringing to life the iconic Japanese artwork “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” by Japanese ukiyo-e artist Hokusai Katsushika, the bar space is adorned in a harmonious blue and white colour palette expressed in the striking Blue Tempest stone and a hand-applied plaster finish that gracefully curves across the layered ceiling.
Nobu restaurant (second level): As guests proceed through the wave, they will reach the breathtaking blonde elm Japanese 140-seat courtyard dining room, including a private tasting room for 10 in a contrasting dark cherry wood. Circular timber beams featuring intricate Japanese joinery details gently ripple around a suspended light and porcelain art installation crafted by Canadian ceramic artist Andrea Braescu. Surrounded by circular banquettes connected by four striking columns around its perimeter, the exquisite art piece represents a Japanese ginkgo tree known as a “living fossil” – a symbol of peace, hope, and longevity.
Sushi bar (second level): At the 11-seat sushi bar guests can appreciate the masterful craft of the culinary team while engaging directly with the sushi chefs.
Private dining room (second level): Guests will notice an intimate 22-seat private dining room discreetly tucked behind the cascading chandelier. Enclosed within bronze-tinted glass panels, this celebratory space offers a glimpse of and a vantage point over the ground level bar, creating a captivating gallery view.

Several directors return to TIFF with attention-grabbing World Premieres, including Men of War, directed by Billy Corben (Screwball, Cocaine Cowboys) and Jen Gaiten, following someone recently arrested for arms smuggling in connection with a plot to overthrow Venezuelaâs government; The Last Republican, directed by Steve Pink (The Wheel, Hot Tub Time Machine), profiling US conservative politician Kinzinger as he breaks ranks with the GOP to criticize Donald Trump; Space Cowboy, directed by Marah Strauch (Sunshine Superman) and Bryce Leavitt, which captures the stunning cinematography and complicated life of skydiver Jennings; So Surreal: Behind the Masks, directed by Neil Diamond (Reel Injun) and Joanne Robertson, which covers the effort to return cultural artifacts to the Yupâik and Kwakwa̱ka̱ʌwakw nations; and Blue Road – The Edna OâBrien Story, directed by SinĂ©ad OâShea (Pray for Our Sinners, TIFF â22), which profiles the groundbreaking Irish novelist who broke taboos with her sexual candour.
Other World Premieres include Halima Elkhatabiâs Living Together, Ted Passonâs Patrice: The Movie, Lina VdovĂźi and Radu Ciorniciucâs Tata, Anastasiia Bortualiâs Temporary Shelter, Santiago Esteinouâs The Freedom of Fierro, Sue Kimâs The Last of the Sea Women, and Ali Weinsteinâs Your Tomorrow.
These TIFF Docs titles join a number of documentaries already announced for TIFF â24 as part of the Gala programme, including the World Premieres of Elton John: Never Too Late, Andrea Bocelli: Because I Believe, Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band, and the Canadian premiere of Will & Harper; as well as non-fiction works previously announced for the Platform competition, The Wolves Always Come at Night, which blends observed moments and recreated scenes, and Viktor; and for Centerpiece, Fanatical: The Catfishing of Tegan and Sara.

Today we get a new red-bank Trailer for OUT COME THE WOLVES, from the same director of BACKCOUNTRY, Adam MacDonald. This will open in select theatres across Canada on August 30, 2024. The survival horror film will open in approximately 10 theatres in every province (including Quebec!) and day-and-date on VOD/Digital.

Thereâs a new title igniting screens this month. Hollywood Suite is excited to announce the Canadian broadcast premiere of The Burning Season, directed by Sean Garrity and starring Sara Canning (The Vampire Diaries) and Jonas Chernick (My Awkward Sexual Adventure). The film will premiere on Hollywood Suiteâs 2000s Movies Channel on August 20, 2024 at 9pm ET. It tells a story of hope set against a cycle of self-destruction through infidelity, betrayal and love.
Receiving acclaim across its festival and theatrical release, The Burning Season has been presented with various awards including Best Feature Film from the Writers Guild of Canada Awards, Best Screenplay at the Canadian Film Fest, and the Borsos Award for Best Screenplay at the Whistler Film Festival.

Filmed in Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario, the story is told backwards to take audiences on a journey to find out why the characters made the decisions they did.
