Telefilm Canada is announcing its investment of $2.68 million in five Indigenous film projects through the Indigenous funding streams for the Theatrical Documentary Program and the Production Program in both the English and French markets.

An annual commitment of $4 million is earmarked for Indigenous creators from Canada’s Indigenous communities, with the remainder amount reserved for Indigenous projects submitted through the Talent to Watch Program and the Development Program.

Telefilm received and assessed 22 projects representing more than $16 million in funding requests. Project submissions were considered by an Advisory Committee, and Telefilm met with all shortlisted teams.

More funding decisions, including projects from the Indigenous stream and the Theatrical Documentary Program will be announced in the coming weeks. Statistics on all films funded in the year will be published in the 2025–26 Annual Report.

An advisory committee composed of external and internal representatives has evaluated the projects and made its recommendations. The decision-making process is designed to ensure that Telefilm funds a balanced production portfolio reflecting a variety of genres, budgets, company sizes, regions of the country, and perspectives. A list of the selection committee members will be posted on Telefilm’s Project Financing Advisory Committees page once all funding decisions have been made.

Today, Disney+ debuted the official trailer and key art for the Hulu Original limited series “The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox.” The series will premiere on Wednesday, August 20, 2025 exclusively on Disney+ in Canada, with two episodes at launch, then one new episode weekly.

A limited series inspired by the story of how Amanda Knox was wrongfully convicted for the tragic murder of her roommate, Meredith Kercher, and her journey to set herself free. Peak Everything will close the 50th Toronto International Film Festival on September 13. The film will open theatrically in English Canada on September 26, 2025. NEW and Noteworthy Attractions at This Year’s CNE:

NEW – Buckle up for the CNE debut of Dinner in the Sky – An exhilarating feast for the senses that is truly next level. This high-flying dining experience is suspended 150-feet in the air to breathtaking 360-views of the Midway, and offers the opportunity to sip and dine in a “Chefs Table” environment where each course is prepared and served in front of an intimate group of guests, up to 22 seats. Several ‘flights’ will take place daily on the grounds near Hotel X, beginning every afternoon from 3pm onwards including sunset-hour dinners and cocktails at night among the neon lights of the Midway. NEW – CNE’s Drag Brunch EXtravaganza will be serving up mimosas and glam with a reunion of some of Season 1 Queens of Canada’s Drag Race. The 76th Annual Canadian International Air Show – North America’s longest-running air show will once again animate the skies over Lake Ontario August 30 – September 1 with a jam-packed aerial show featuring jaw-dropping stunts by the Northern Stars Aerobatic Team, Trevor Rafferty and his homebuilt Pitts Special, Luke Penner in an Extra 330SC, a CF-18 Tactical Demonstration, and of course, the beloved Canadian Forces Snowbirds.

Todd Barry has released four one-hour stand-up specials including his latest one, Domestic Shorthair. He’s appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, The Late Show with David Letterman, Conan and Late Night with Seth Meyers. His acting credits include the feature films The Wrestler and Road Trip. He has also starred in several television series such as Flight of the Concords, Chappelle’s Show, Spin City, Sex and the City and many more. You may have heard his voice on the animated series Bob’s Burgers, Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist, and Aqua Teen Hunger Force. Todd is also the author of the critically-acclaimed 2017 travel memoir Thank You For Coming To Hattiesburg.

Two Dykes and a Mic is a weekly comedy podcast and touring live show. Comedians and IRL BFFs McKenzie Goodwin and Rachel Scanlon host the world’s greatest and gayest show of all time. McKenzie Goodwin is an LA-based comedian and writer. She’s been described as the“Norah Jones of comedy” due to her low energy, soft voice and repertoire of material that slaps HARD. Yes, she’s gay… stop asking. Rachel Scanlon is a stand up comedian from Minnesota. Ray has performed all over the country and legend has it, is the best comedian to ever live. You’ve seen Ray on Don’t Tell Comedy, JFL’s Straight Up Stand Up, and Comedy Central.

Emancipation Arts proudly presents FREEUP! Emancipation Day 2025, a vibrant, in-person celebration of FREEDOM on Friday, August 1, 2025, from 12 PM to 4 PM at The Distillery Historic District.

Hosted by acclaimed artist and cultural leader Ngozi Paul and friends, this free, family friendly afternoon brings Toronto together through music, dance, art, and community joy.

A signature highlight will be the presentation of the Rosemary Sadlier Freedom Award to legendary playwright and visionary artist Djanet Sears, for her immeasurable impact on Canadian arts and Black storytelling.

“We’re honouring Djanet Sears with the Rosemary Sadlier Freedom Award because her impact on our cultural landscape is immeasurable,” said Ngozi Paul, founder of Emancipation Arts. “She’s an iconic artist—an actor, writer, director, and teacher—but also a builder of spaces. Through works like Afrika Solo, Harlem Duet, and The Adventures of a Black Girl in Search of God, she’s offered us stories rooted in truth, legacy, and liberation… Her work carries both excellence and generosity—and we simply wouldn’t be here without her.”
