Taking over Toronto last week at their star-studded Red Carpet for the World Premiere of GOON: LAST OF THE ENFORCERS, the long-awaited Sequel to the Canadian Classic of tomorrow later this week hits theatres nationwide. Co-written, starring and directed by Montreal’s Jay Baruchel, the Film has us reuniting with our beloved hockey brawler Doug Glatt (Seann William Scott) as he delays a much due retirement after his beloved Halifax Highlanders undergo new ownership, captained by his greatest nemesis.

Our David Baldwin had the pleasure of chatting with the Film’s stars, Scott, Marc–André Grondin(Xavier LaFlamme) and Wyatt Russell (Anders Cain).

“The script was awesome”, says Scott on why he returned to reprise his memorable role. “It took my character and all the characters, I felt as I was reading it, I was watching it.”. “I went from, ‘Should we make a Sequel?’ to ‘We have to make this!'”.

Grondin, reveals some of the less flattering things he dealt with for his craft in this Film. “You’re sitting in that gear all day and it’s not good for you skin. It’s gross. After 12 hours, you remove your stuff and you’re like ‘What is this?!'”, he says. “It’s fun but it doesn’t smell good.”.

Russell, a former goalie-turned-actor who also is the son of Hollywood icons Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn, reveals how grueling the physical aspects of his role were versus playing hockey in real life. “12 hours per day I was in skates versus one hour in skates. After it was all done, I felt tingly in the toes all day.”.

Fox Searchlight release WILSON Friday, March 24, 2017.

Taking place tonight at the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts, the fifth annual Canadian Screen Awards honoured the year’s best in Television, Film and Digital Media.  Earning top honours tonight was ORPHAN BLACK with five wins for Best Dramatic Series, Original Score, Supporting Actor (Kevin Hanchard), Writing and Lead Actress (Tatiana Maslany).  The Toronto-made Series, which currently is filming its final episode, will be premiering its fifth and final season Saturday, June 10, 2017.

Leading the way in the Film categories was Xavier Dolan‘s IT’S ONLY THE END OF THE WORLD. The French-Canadian Film which was Canada’s submission at the Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film this year, took home Best Picture, Best Director (Dolan), Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Makeup and Best Supporting Actor (Vincent Cassel).

Regina-born Actress Tatiana Maslany was the queen of the night, winning for both her work on Orphan Black and as Lead Actress in the Feature Film The Other Half in which she stars opposite her real-life partner Tom Cullen.

Toronto’s Stephan James took home Lead Actor for his work on sports drama RACE.  He stated, “The greatest honour of my career was to portray Jesse Owens.”. The Film also won for Visual Effects, Overall Sound and Sound Editing.

Hosted by a spirited Howie Mandel, the evening also saw icon Christopher Plummer win a Lifetime Achievement Award.  He says, “I’ve spent almost 70 years making a fool of myself in this crazy profession of ours.  And I’ve had the time of my life.”.

Comedian Dave Chappelle also flew-in for the occasion, presenting the Icon Award to JUST FOR LAUGHS.  He credits the organization for helping him achieve his big break, joking “I’d never came to Canada before I came to this festival and when I did, I found that Canada was kinder and gentler, like a little gay brother I didn’t know about.”.

Synopsis:
In the small town of Angel Grove, five teenagers (Dacre Montgomery, RJ Cyler, Ludi Lin, Naomi Scott, Becky G) who are treated like outcasts by their peers find themselves in a strange cave with colorful, glowing coins. When they fall into the water, they’re amazed to find their bodies are glowing, each in a different color.

The next morning they discover that they all have super strength. The kids who once bullied them are surprised to find the five teens are invincible. In order to find out how and why this happened, the five teens decide to go back to the cave where it all began. There they encounter a voice that informs them they are the Power Rangers and they must defeat an evil alien named Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks).

This looks simply mesmerizing. Auteur Terrence Malick‘s SONG TO SONG premiered last night at SXSW in Austin and believe it or not Malick himself made a rare appearance. Read DEADLINE‘s coverage for more on that. The Film of course is set in Austin so it was only fitting it got a Premiere at the Festival.

Synopsis:
In this modern love story set against the Austin, Texas music scene, two entangled couples—struggling songwriters Faye (Rooney Mara) and BV (Ryan Gosling), and music mogul Cook (Michael Fassbender) and the waitress whom he ensnares (Natalie Portman)—chase success through a rock ‘n’ roll landscape of seduction and betrayal.

While early reviews aren’t so promising, we cannot deny our intrigue. Here’s what Critics are saying so far:

Peter Debruge, Variety: “It pains me to say it, but Malick might want to consider another lengthy hiatus.”.

John DeFore, Hollywood Reporter: “Suffice to say that Song to Song is not designed to win back onetime admirers who felt Malick‘s To the Wonder and Knight of Cups drowned in their own navels.”.

Joe McGovern, Entertainment Weekly: “In terms of content and meaningfulness, Terrence Malick‘s Song to Song is the cinematic equivalent of a Trump press conference.”.

No surprises here – KONG: SKULL ISLAND was expected to take the top of the Box Office and does just that this weekend with a $54 million debut from 3,846 theatres for Warner Bros. Made for $185 million, the Blockbuster, it  gets a 78% on the Tomatometer from Critics and an B+ CinemaScore from Audiences.

LOGAN settles for second after a strong debut last weekend, with $36 million for 20th Century Fox. In two weeks, it has made a stellar $150 million domestically.

GET OUT places third with $21.3 million in its third week out for Universal Pictures. It has made $111.3 million already  and believe it or not was made for only $4.5 million.

THE SHACK continues to exceed expectations, placing fourth for eOne Films/Lionsgate Films with $9.6 million in its second week out.

BEFORE I FALL lands in sixth for Open Road Films/Elevation Films in its second week out with $3 million. It has made $9 million thus far.

FIFTY SHADES DARKER rounds-out the Top Ten with $1.6 million for Universal Pictures. This installment in the Franchise has grossed $111 million over five weeks.

20th Century Fox Canada release THE BOSS BABY Friday, March 31, 2017.

If like me you loved of 2016’s Ghostbusters, Bridesmaids, Spy, The Heat, Nurse Jackie or The Office, chances are you’re already a huge Fan and might not even know it! Writer/Actor/Director Paul Feig makes a rare visit to Toronto today, speaking at the Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival tonight at Randolph Theatre in an intimate chat with Bruce McCulloch (Kids in the Hall).

Granting only one live TV interview this morning, the Freaks and Geeks Creator appeared at CITY‘s Breakfast Television to chat with Dina Pugliese about his career and tonight’s chat.

Despite it being blisteringly-cold, Feig handled a growing group of Fans with grace and stopped for personalizations and Selfies (multiples in one instance), in no rush.
