We just can’t get enough of Comedies about girls just having some fun! With an all-star cast, ROUGH NIGHT already looks like one of this summer’s funniest (and messiest) adventures on-screen!  I admit, we’re super curious about seeing Scarlett Johansson in a comedy.

Synopsis:
Five best friends from college (played by Scarlett Johansson, Kate McKinnon, Jillian Bell, Ilana Glazer and Zoë Kravitz) reunite 10 years later for a wild bachelorette weekend in Miami. Their hard partying takes a hilariously dark turn when they accidentally kill a male stripper. Amidst the craziness of trying to cover it up, they’re ultimately brought closer together when it matters most.

I admit it, I love soapy, over-the-top escapism and after seeing this Trailer for UNFORGETTABLE, I officially am sold that this is a cut from the same cloth as the Basic Instincts, The Hand That Rocks the Cradles, Single White Females, Unfaithfuls, Fatal Attractions and Obsesseds of the world. The Classics.

Synopsis:
Katherine Heigl stars as Tessa Connover, who is barely coping with the end of her marriage when her ex-husband, David (Geoff Stults), becomes happily engaged to Julia Banks (Rosario Dawson)—not only bringing Julia into the home they once shared but also into the life of their daughter, Lilly (Isabella Rice). Trying to settle into her new role as a wife and a stepmother, Julia believes she has finally met the man of her dreams, the man who can help her put her own troubled past behind her. But Tessa’s jealousy soon takes a pathological turn until she will stop at nothing to turn Julia’s dream into her ultimate nightmare.

In celebration of International Women’s Day, none other than a superwoman herself flew into Toronto! An actress, an entrepreneur, a philanthropist, a wife and a mother of two, Blake Lively has helped define a generation for many millennials with her work on wildly-popular series Gossip Girl. Success never stopped there as she equally is a Movie Star with memorable roles in hit Films like Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants, The Town, Green Lantern (on which she met her Canuck husband Ryan Reynolds) and more recently the well-reviewed shark horror, The Shallows.

Sponsored by L’Oréal, Lively walked the Red Carpet and presented at the Women of Worth Gala, held at historic OMNI King Edward Hotel. Earlier in the day she spoke to TV media about her appearance, her first visit to the City since helping launch Target Canada back when that was a thing still! Just a couple weeks back she made a rare public appearance for the beauty giant at New York Fashion Week.

The avid foodie and baker was in and out after a quick minute, but despite being well-guarded, she was lovely to stop to say “hi”, letting her guards know “I’m good!”, then snapping a Selfie. She was so lovely!  This means a lot as we have loved Lively for years now!

Synopsis:
The eighth installment of the Fast and Furious franchise has Dom (Vin Diesel), Letty (Michelle Rodriguez), Roman (Tyrese Gibson), Tej (Ludacris) and Luke (Dwayne Johnson) settling into their new team dynamic, without Brian (Paul Walker) or Mia (Jordana Brewster). Universal Pictures Canada release THE FATE OF THE FURIOUS Friday, April 14, 2017.

The Red Carpet was rolled-out tonight at Scotiabank Theatre for the Toronto for the World Premiere of Hockey Comedy, GOON. In its own right a Canadian Classic, the Film centers on veteran brawler Doug Glatt (Sean William Scott) who at once is dealing with nagging injuries and aging, just about ready to retire.  This all changes when his beloved team, the Halifax Highlanders are acquired by new ownership and at once, his arch rival is named captain of the team, threatening to destroy the team irreversibly.

Taking the reins this time around as Director, Montreal’s Jay Baruchel wears multiple caps here as Writer and as one of the Film’s stars. Joining him at the Premiere were the likes of stars Seann William Scott, Elisha Cuthbert, Marc-André Grondin, Wyatt Russell, George Tchortov, Richard Clarkin and Trent Pardy, plus TSN‘s James Duthie and Alexisonfire‘s Wade MacNeil, the latter whose music can be heard in this sequel.

It was a night filled with star power as in-town celebrities including English Soul Singer Beverley Knight who stars in Mirvish‘s The Bodyguard came out, while Katie Findlay who stars in Man Seeking Woman alongside Baruchel too showed her support. Several were surprised to see among others, members of iconic Canadian rock outfit RUSH in attendance, including Geddy Lee!

Our David Baldwin and Siobhán Rich had the pleasure of chatting with the Cast of GOON: LAST OF THE ENFORCERS. We chat about their experience filming in Barrie, just north of the City and also some of their own Stanley Cup picks!

JAY BARUCHEL, Director, Co-Writer and “Pat”

Montreal’s Baruchel tells us about the joys of filming in his native Canada. “I’m home. I  get to eat the food I like, people get the references I make and my turns of phrase. Most artists want to create from the place they’re from and I’m no different. It was a very quick ‘yes’.”.  He adds, “This Movie’s been in my head and heart for a very long time.”.

And on who he’d like to win the Stanley Cup this year? “Obviously Montreal!”.

ELISHA CUTHBERT, “Mary“

The Calgary-born Actress who has found major success on popular series like Happy Endings and 24, tells us about her reuniting with former Popular Mechanics for Kids Co-Star Jay Baruchel in GOON: LAST OF THE ENFORCERS. “It’s surreal. We started working together when we were so young and to come full circle and have him directing me – I mean there were some pinch-me moments as I never thought in my wildest dreams I’d be starring in a Film with him directing. It was amazing. It was really cool.”.

On preparing for the role of Mary, she says “I drank a lot. I mean, it was acting but I thought this was so great. I can go into this not worrying about sounding too Canadian and just have a good time with it.”.

Married to hockey star Dion Phaneuf, it is clear who Cuthbert is rooting for in the Stanley Cup. “I hope my husband and his team, the Ottawa Senators go all the way.”.

MARC-ANDRÉ GRONDIN, “Xavier”

Grondin gained international acclaim for his work in Jean-Marc Vallée‘s 2005 Film C.R.A.Z.Y.  The Montreal native tells us, “I would shoot GOON every year. It’s that much fun for real. Surrounded by friends, playing hockey and getting coached into being a better hockey player. What more could I ask for?”.

On working with Baruchel as Director, he reveals “Actually for Jay‘s birthday, I gave him a GOON Jersey with a ‘C‘ on it because he’s the real captain of the ship.”.  He also praises Co-Star Scott, saying “Seann is a great captain, I’ve never seen someone so humble and nice to everyone. He was so available and he’s a real team player and that’s special.”.

“I hope the Habs win.  I’m not too sure but that would be amazing!”, Grondin says about the Stanley Cup.

WYATT RUSSELL, “Anders”

Formerly a professional hockey player, Russell also happens to be son of Hollywood royalty Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn.  On being a real-life hockey player to playing one in GOON: LAST OF THE ENFORCERS, he admits “It was a good time and I’m happy I got to do it.”. That being said, there was still a bit of a learning curve. “I was learning how to be a player because I was a goalie.  It was fun to learn a new hockey skill that wasn’t goal-tending.”.

On what advice he’d give his character Anders on getting along better with his own father, he imparts, “I would teach my dad how not to partake and to show love in a different way. I’d speak more to him than me!”, he laughs.

Being a Los Angeles native, he shows his hometown bias choosing  the Los Angeles Kings to win the Stanley Cup.

TRENT PARDY, “Stevenson“

Taking-over the role of Stevenson from fellow Canadian actor Ricky Mabe, Trent Pardy tells us about how he became involved with this project. “I met Jay a few years ago and Ricky unfortunately couldn’t be a part of number two, and he asked ‘Why don’t you come in and reprise his role?’. I had big shoes to fill, they were hospitable and welcomed me into group. I’m blessed to be a part of the Highlanders family.”.

He recalls his daily routine filming just north of Toronto.  “We shot four weeks up in Barrie on the ice in the morning at 8 o’clock and finished around 6.   We’d shoot and have lunch for 15 minutes only. We’d have epic shinny (street hockey) matches, come off drenched in sweat and Hair & Makeup were like, ‘You have to go shower!’.”.

On Baruchel‘s directorial skills, he reveals to us “He’s so technical behind the camera. He’s able to see what he needs, ask what he needs from the actors and gets the technical team to shoot it and it’s picture perfect.”.

“I’m a Habs fan,  but they way they’re playing these days who knows?”, he comments on the Stanley Cup.

RICHARD CLARKIN, “Gord” 

Reprising the role of Gord, the Murdoch Mysteries star tells us about his experience this time around. “It was the the best family reunion ever. We had such an incredible time – big loving. We got everyone back for the sequel and had as much fun, if not more.  We also gained some great new people come in Callum Keith Rennie, Elisha Cuthbert and Wyatt Russell.”.  

He adds, “Jay is a wonderful Director. He’s generous, trusts and loves his actors. He runs a happy set.”.

On the Stanley Cup, he says “I’m a Leafs fan but I think Pittsburgh’s got a good chance to repeat.”.

WADE MACNEIL (ALEXISONFIRE), Composer

Known best for his work as a guitarist and vocalist in popular Canadian post-hardcore band Alexisonfire, MacNeil and Baruchel actually have been friends for quite some time. “Jay has been a big Alexisonfire fan for a long time. A few years ago we went to Habs game together and as he was putting a Film together. I did a song… and then another… and then I sat down and watched the whole thing. When all was said and done, I did about 30-40 minutes of music.”.

On his goals sonically for GOON: LAST OF THE ENFORCERS, he explains “I wanted it to be all things that sound like you could turn up to 10 in an arena, whether it be big, show-offy, Rock and Roll stuff or tense agro-dance music – whatever it needed to be.”.

MacNeil having grown-up in St. Catharines, Ontario which is close to Buffalo, naturally is Sabres fan.

JAMES DUTHIE (TSN) as himself

The Canadian Screen Award-winning TSN personality has a cameo in this sequel and explains to us about his day on-set. “I shot in one day and next to T.J. Miller, who was lots of fun.He said the rudest, most outrageous stuff I’ve ever heard. I cracked-up several times so I don’t know if I did my part very well.”. He jokes, “I played James Duthie, a sportscaster, so I really had to go out of my realm to play myself.”.

For the Stanley Cup, Duthie has four picks: Washington, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Minnesota. He says, “If I had to narrow it down to one, it’s Washington.”.

LOGAN shreds its competition to take the top of the Box Office with a monstrous $81 million opening for 20th Century Fox.  Playing it 4,071 theatres across North America, the final Wolverine Film starring Hugh Jackman receives an outstanding 93% on the Tomatometer and Audiences gave it an A- CinemaScore. Despite an outstanding performance in its debut, it still is behind 2009’s X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE, which opened with $85 million, although it should be noted that was a PG-13 release and this latest installment is R-rated, setting a record for highest-ever opening for a Film of that rating in March, a record held previously by 300.

In second this weekend is GET OUT from Universal Pictures, which last weekend debuted on-top.  It earns a stellar $26.5 million in its second week out, a two-week tally of $76.3 million.

Faith-based Film THE SHACK opens in third with $15.3 million from 2,888 theatres for Lionsgate Films/eOne Films. It gets 16% on the Tomatometer and an A CinemaScore.

THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE is in fourth with $11.1 million for Warner Bros. Over four weeks it has made $148 million domestically.

BEFORE I FALL debuts in sixth for Open Road Films/Elevation Pictures with $4.6 million from 2,346 theatres. The Sundance selection gets a respectable 68% on the Tomatometer and a B CinemaScore.

LA LA LAND rounds-out the Top Ten with $3.1 million after last weekend’s Oscars mis-announcement debacle where it was named Best Picture, only or it to be clarified the award actually went to MOONLIGHT.  LA LA LAND over 13 weeks has earned $145 million for Lionsgate Films/eOne Films.  MOONLIGHT also gets a boost from last weekend’s Oscars exposure placing eleventh, expanding back to 1,564 theatres and earning $2.2 million.  It has grossed $25 million over 20 weeks of release for A24 Films/Elevation Pictures.

She’s grown-up so much! Lorde has been away from the spotlight for a bit now but the time away has done lots for her maturity wise. She sings candidly about a break-up on new single GREEN LIGHT, which actually is pretty exceptional. Accompanying the single is a gorgeously-shot Video.  She’s effortless, cool and we feel like we really are getting a piece of her broken heart here in this Clip from Director Grant Singer.

A little bit like Mean Girls, a little bit like Groundhog Day, BEFORE I FALL, based on the Novel by Lauren Oliver, takes us inside teenager Samantha‘s(Zoey Deutch) world after a tragic car accident on Cupid Day has her re-living that same day over and over until she fully understands how it is her actions impact her own destiny. In town to promote the Film which closed-out the TIFF Next Wave Film Festival, were its Director Ry Russo-Young and star Zoey Deutch and we had the pleasure of chatting with them.

When did you first get involved with the source-material and what was one of the biggest challenges bringing it to the screen?
Ry: I read the script about three years ago and what I was so attracted to was that is surprised me. I sort of thought that it was a superficial Teen Movie in the first 20 pages and wasn’t sure if I was on board with who these characters were and all that. Then I found Sam’s journey to be unexpectedly emotional and moving and profound. So thats what attracted me to the Movie.

Zoey: What attracted me initially was that I felt like…its so rare that I read a script that feels like it has the opportunity to be both extremely thought-provoking and moving, while also being entertaining. And not that I had any idea or expectation it would make it to Sundance or TIFF Next Wave or be a wide release. But I felt that it was so thought-provoking and so entertaining and so wonderful to watch a young girl go through so many different variations of her own self to explore all the contradictions and complications and intricacies of being a young woman. I really thought that that was important and inspiring and a really wonderful opportunity too.

Ry: It’s also a story we don’t get to see so often its a classic heroes journey with a female protagonist that is really at its heart. It’s the kind of Movie that I wish I had when I was a teenager, so its kinda like be the change that you want to see.

The chemistry between the group of friends is very organic. Did this chemistry need work or did it come naturally?

Ry: I think it was a little bit of both to be honest. A lot of the girls, Zoey’s job, she was in every scene it was so demanding a lot of the girls hung-out. We rehearsed a bit with all four of them. They hung-out independently as well a lot they went out to dinner.

Zoey: That also fed into the social cues of that group. Because I really did want Sam to feel like more of a follower than any other members of the group. Yes, she was probably like second in command to Lindsay but it was almost like a positive that I didn’t get to hang out them as much as they got to hang out with each other because they had developed this thing and I still felt a little but left out because I wasn’t there, I wasn’t experiencing those things. They were posting things on Instagram, I wasn’t there, and I would feel left-out. And it helped me. It really helped me feel lonely and left-out. It was actually kind of useful. But the girls…when I did get to hang-out with them they are the coolest, funniest, sweetest most wonderful women and and so supportive. And I am really truly friends with all of them. And I wish they were here now. We were texting them, chatting them, texting them all pictures of us.

Ry: It’s a little but of both in terms of we did some work and then they were also so natural with each other and everyone was down and had great energy.

These so called ‘mean girls’ all have their own back stories. Why was that important? To make sure that that backstory was shown?

Zoey: So vital. And I feel like, I don’t know what your experiences in middle school or high school were like, but for me people weren’t one thing. They were like Sam, she’s a bully and she’s bullied. Like Lindsay, she’s mean but for a reason. It comes from a place of real vulnerability and a fear for vulnerability. And I thought that was so beautiful that there really wasn’t a clear distinct hero or villain in the Movie. That you see so many facets of female experience.

Ry: Diversity is really key. To me that is the hope for a Movie like this…is that there are other Films. That this sort of leads the way for more Films by and about women. And one of the things in terms of…it was everything to me. Because otherwise we would just have stereotypes right? We would have these archetypes and stereotypes that we have seen a thousand times. And part of whats interesting about the Movie is that you do realize that everyone has their own humanity and is their own kind of complicated person battling their own inner demons. I always try to think about…to think about every character as if it was their own Movie about that character.
