For a second straight week, CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR absolutely dominates the Box Office with $70 million in its second weekend from 4,226 theatres for Disney/Marvel. Its two week tally comes to $293 million in North America alone.
THE JUNGLE BOOK makes it a Disney double in second with $17 million now in its fifth week, a total of $310 million grossed domestically.
MONEY MONSTER opens in third with $14 million from 3,104 theatres for Sony Pictures. The satire-thriller directed by Jodie Foster starring Julia Roberts, Jack O’Connell and George Clooney earns a 55% on the Tomatometer from Critics and also a B+ CinemaScore from Audiences.
Horror THE DARKNESS debuts in fourth with $5.5 million from 1,755 theatres for Hightop Releasing, out only in the U.S. It stars Kevin Bacon and gets a C CinemaScore and a 0% on the Tomatometer.
MOTHER’S DAY is in fifth this weekend with $3.3 million for Open Road Films/Elevation Pictures, nearing the $30 million mark.
KEANU is in eight with $1.8 million for Warner Bros., totaling $18 million over three weeks.
THE BOSS rounds-out the Top Ten with $1 million in its sixth week out for Universal Pictures, just having surpassed $60 million.
There never was any doubt about it, but CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR opens with a big commotion, earning $178 million in its debut for Disney/Marvel from 4,226 theatres. It equally is a hit with Critics and Audiences, getting both a 91% on the Tomatometer and A CinemaScore respectively. This makes it the 5th highest opening ever for a Marvel Film behind Marvel’s The Avengers‘ 2012 opening of $207 million.
Only to be outdone by its fellow studio release, THE JUNGLE BOOK slips to second spot after a three week domination, with $22.8 million from 4,144 theatres. Thus far it has made$285 million in North America alone.
MOTHER’S DAY is in third this namesake weekend with $7 million from 3,141 theatres for Elevation Pictures/Open Road Films. It has made $18.8 million in two weeks.
THE HUNTSMAN: WINTER’S WAR lands in fourth this weekend with $3.3 million for Universal Pictures, now in its third week out. It has just surpassed $40 million in earnings.
KEANU is in sixth with $3.1 million for Warner Bros., bringing its two week total to $15.1 million.
THE BOSS is seventh with $1.7 million for Universal Pictures in its fifth week, almost crossing the $60-million mark.
BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE rounds-out the Top Ten with $1.2 million for Warner Bros., bringing its total to $324 million over seven weeks.
THE JUNGLE BOOK continues its domination at the Box Office a third straight week at number one! The Disney Live Action adaptation of Rudyard Kipling‘s story, earns $38 million from 4,041 theatres, making for $248 million thus far domestically. Expect huge numbers also for Disney/Marvel next week as CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR opens.
KEANU debuts in second for Warner Bros. with $9 million, from 2,658 theatres. It gets an B CinemaScore and a 77% on the Tomatometer. We foresee the kitten comedy becoming a bit of a sleeper hit in coming weeks as it gains a cult status.
THE HUNTSMAN: WINTER’S WAR is in third this weekend with $8.8 million from 3,802 theatres. In two weeks it has grossed $33 million for Universal Pictures.
Star-studded MOTHER’S DAY debuts in fourth with $7.8 million for Elevation Pictures/Open Road Films, from 3,035 theatres. It gets a B+ CinemaScore and 9% on the Tomatometer.
RATCHET & CLANK debuts in fifth with $5.8 million for Universal Pictures/Focus Features, from 2,891 theatres. The Animated Feature gets 20% on the Tomatometer and a B CinemaScore.
ZOOTOPIA is in seventh for Disney with $4.5 million in its ninth week out with $324 million earned in its North American run.
CRIMINAL rounds-out the Top Ten with $1.2 million for VVS Films/Lionsgate Films, earning $13.3 million domestically over three weeks.
