Gary Johnson (Glen Powell) is a professor who moonlights as a surveillance operative for the police. He is asked to fill in as an “undercover hitman-for-hire” during one sting, and surprises everyone with the strength and believability of his performance. Gary quickly becomes the go-to undercover performer and one day meets Madison (Adria Arjona), who wants to hire him to kill her husband.
Talk about your classic meet cute.
HIT MAN, the latest from multi-hyphenate Director Richard Linklater, is easily one of the hottest and most sought-after tickets at TIFF ’23. It is not hard to figure out why – he directs the hell out of the Film, crafting an offbeat Romantic Comedy that is just a joy to watch. Linklater has never been nailed down to one genre over the course of his nearly 40-year career, always swinging for the fences with mainstream experimentation and zigging when you assume he should be zagging. Though there are a few occasional story stumbles here and places where it could have been tightened, this is easily one of his best and funniest films; the kind of screwball Comedy we have not seen in decades.
Of course, we cannot give Linklater all the credit. The Film is very much a collaboration between him and Writer/Producer Powell, who is having the time of his life. This is their third film together and I can only hope there will be more collabs soon, because this has the promise of being one of the great actor/director pairings. Powell is electric from the moment the Film begins, narrating with gusto and confidently jumping into every scene headfirst. The scenes with him chatting with different perps in very different costumes are a clear highlight, showcasing his range and adoration for the material (which is based on a true story). But it is his powder keg chemistry with Arjona that really makes the Film sing. It is immediately palpable in their first scene together, and only gets stronger and sexier as the Film goes on.
Make sure you have the fire department on speed dial when you watch. Because any time these two are together threatens to ignite the screen from how incendiary their chemistry is.

Ensign Jesse Brown (Jonathan Majors, the future big bad of the MCU) is an outsanding pilot and the US Navy’s first black Aviator in history. Sadly, the racist troops around him do not think much of this incredible achievement. Enter Lieutenant Tom Hudner (Glen Powell) who joins Brown’s squadron just before they are deployed to fight in the Korean War. Hudner wants to get close to his new Wingman, but Brown is suspicious of his motivations.
The true story of Brown and what happened to him before, during and after Korea is incredible. That story is the beating heart of DEVOTION, and is the exact reason why the Film feels so disappointing and uninteresting. It merely goes through the motions telling the story and embellishing facts along the way, never really stopping for any moments of introspection or even reactions to some of the tragic things that happen. It is not given the love and attention it needs, and feels so callously put together rather than being a powerful story of Heroism and the strength of the human spirit. This is a story that deserves to be told, yet feels like it could and should have been done better. The flight scenes are great (even if they will unfavourably be compared to the ones in Top Gun: Maverick), the sound is top-notch as is the look of the Film. But if we are not really caring about the characters or the story, then why do any of these technical achievements matter?
All of that said, Majors is very good in the role of Brown. He feels a little stifled in some scenes, yet still manages to do an admirable job carrying the film under the weight of the lackluster script. Powell is wonderful as always, and supporting turns from Thomas Sadoski, Joseph Cross, Joe Jonas and especially Christina Jackson (playing Brown’s firecracker of a wife Daisy) are all well-done. I just wish they were all in a better movie.
DEVOTION screens as follows at TIFF ’22:
Mon, Sep 12 IN-PERSON Cinesphere IMAX Theatre 6:00pm
Wed, Sep 14 IN-PERSON Cinesphere IMAX Theatre 9:00pm
Thu, Sep 15 IN-PERSON Cinesphere IMAX Theatre 5:30pm
We’re one more sleep till TIFF ’22 begins and per tradition, we’re on it! So amazing seeing a couple names in-town already for the Festival already, despite their Films not yet premiering for a couple days.
NOÉMIE MERLANT
We’re actually really excited about this sighting! Merlant got her big breakthrough in 2019’s PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE, which went on to win huge accolades. The French Actress who has been nominated twice for a César Award now stars in BABY RUBY at TIFF ’22 which is about an Vlogger/Influencer whose world unravels after she becomes a mother. Kit Harington also stars and the Film premieres Friday night. She’s just so lovely!
GLEN POWELL
This certainly isn’t GLEN POWELL‘S first TIFF but he’s back and riding the smash success of this Summer’s TOP GUN: MAVERICK in which he stars as Hangman. He can be see at TIFF ’22 in DEVOTION, which is getting some buzz, starring alongside Jonathan Majors. The Film which centers on the U.S. Navy’s first Aviator, his Wingman and the racism they encountered, premieres Monday at Cinesphere. Always a class act and couldn’t be more thrilled for his success!
Others we can confirm, arriving in the City tonight include Anna Kendrick, Yvonne Strahovski and Amy Redford.
We can’t wait to share more over these next few days as TIFF ’22 picks-up momentum!
