After premiering at TIFF ’14, Jon Stewart‘s directorial debut certainly left a strong impression on audiences. Now’s your turn Vancouver, Montreal (both Monday, November 10th) and Toronto (Wednesday, November 12th), to see just how well the Funnyman fares as a Director in the poignant and gripping Political Drama, ROSEWATER!
Official Synopsis:
The true story of the imprisonment and torture of Iranian-Canadian journalist and filmmaker Maziar Bahari (Gael García Bernal), who was imprisoned for five months in Iran following an appearance on director Jon Stewart’s The Daily Show.
He named his interrogator “Rosewater” because he smelled of the familiar fragrance. Rosewater beat him and used methods of psychological torture in order to obtain information. His segment on The Daily Show, a satirical sketch in which an actor posed as an American spy in Iran and interviewed Bahari, was played for him and he was accused of being a spy and of working for Zionists.

Certainly one of the sexiest Tracks of 2014, Scarborough’s The Weeknd and Ariana Grande team-up on the bouncy LOVE ME HARDER, from the latter’s latest Disc My Everything. The Video for the Track, directed by Hannah Lux Davis, was just released and it’s cinematic and mysterious just like it sounds. Grande might drop a few jaws with the racy movements!
The Song is co-written by Max Martin, Savan Kotecha, Peter Svensson, Ali Payami, Ahmad Balshe and The Weeknd.

Coming absolutely out of nowhere, NIGHTCRAWLER springs to the top of the North American Box Office this Halloween weekend with a tepid $11 million opening from 2,766 theatres for Open Road Films/Elevation Pictures, just edging-out OUIJA. Reviews are astoundingly good for the TIFF ’14 Selection at 93% on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer from Critics, although it didn’t test as well with Audiences with a B- CinemaScore. This the latest in a long line of Box Office successes for Star and Producer Jake Gyllenhaal, with three of his last four releases topping North America.
OUIJA after debuting on-top last weekend slips to second this weekend, quenching the thirsts of the Horror-hungry with $10.9 million from 2,899 theatres for Universal Pictures. In two weeks, the Film has grossed approximately $35 million.
FURY sits in third spot with $9 million for Sony Pictures this weekend in its third week out. To date it has grossed $60.5 million domestically.
JOHN WICK slips to fourth spot in its second week out with $8 million for Lionsgate Films/eOne Films, nearing the $30-million mark so far.
GONE GIRL continues to be a Box Office smash for 20th Century Fox in fifth with $7 million in its fifth week. The David Fincher Thriller is edging closer towards that $150 million mark and likely will do so in the next week.
ST. VINCENT settles in seventh for The Weinstein Co. and eOne Films with $6.5 million, closing-in on $20 million in its four-week run.
DRACULA UNTOLD bottoms-out the Top Ten with $2.5 million in its fourth week for Universal Pictures.
Let’s be honest now. The Films being made in Toronto of late haven’t been all that enticing, but when we hear of something with substance being made we’re the first to give credit where it’s due. SPOTLIGHT from acclaimed Director and Actor Thomas McCarthy has been under production here in our City and although we’ve met most of the Cast already, we actually were rather excited about meeting the Man helming the Project. Although he was in-town during TIFF promoting The Cobbler, which stars Adam Sandler, McCarthy himself has been a bit illusive to us! SPOTLIGHT stars Rachel McAdams, Liev Schreiber, Mark Ruffalo, Brian d’Arcy James, John Slattery, Michael Keaton, Stanley Tucci and more.
We were so happy today that we saw him out and about heading off for a day of filming. We recognized him right away Flags of our Fathers, The Wire, Law & Order, The Lovely Bones and Little Fockers. Surely at some point in your Television or Movie viewing, you’ve seen McCarthy! Production wraps in Toronto shortly so we’re so happy we got a chance to meet him, although we had no luck spotting Tucci, who’s been busy in the U.S. promoting his Cookbook.
Official Synopsis for SPOTLIGHT – believe me, it’s highly intriguing:
In 2001, the Boston Globe began an investigation that would rock the city and shock the world. SPOTLIGHT tells the story of that investigation, the story of Marty Baron (Schreiber), Ben Bradlee Jr. (Slattery) and the four members of the Globe‘s investigative Spotlight team – Walter Robinson (Keaton), Mike Rezendes (Ruffalo), Sacha Pfeiffer (McAdams) and Matt Carroll (James) – who would sacrifice everything to expose the Boston Archdiocese‘s systemic cover up of sexual abuse of children by ordained priests. For years, whispers of scandal were ignored by society, the media, by police and by the legal system. Silenced by shame, victims of sexual abuse often became victims of suicide. For their commitment to truth, the Spotlight team received the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service.
SPOTLIGHT sheds new light on the investigation and the men and women who were integral to uncovering the story. It points to the necessity of good, local journalism, the type of journalism that has been decimated over the past fifteen years by the decline of the newspaper industry. Spotlight explores the larger themes of complicity and deference, attempting to grapple with the question of how an evil so widespread could go undetected for so long.
