TIFF x Mr. Will want to give Readers in Toronto a chance to win Run-of-Engagement Passes to see TIFF ’19 selection, MARRIAGE STORY.
Synopsis:
Revisiting some of the themes that made his Oscar-nominated TIFF 2005 selection The Squid and the Whale so resonant, writer-director Noah Baumbach digs deep into divorce with Marriage Story. Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson deliver some of their richest work as a couple whose once enviable union crumbles under the weight of mounting resentments and divergent needs.
Charlie (Driver) is a playwright who wants to stay in New York. Nicole (Johansson) is an actor who’s landed a coveted television role that requires her to relocate to Los Angeles. Their geographical dispute tests an already strained relationship. As Marriage Story begins, the couple’s divorce is already underway, with each enlisting legal squads deploying various tactics.
Yet Baumbach’s elegant narrative goes back and forth through time, showing how Charlie and Nicole fell in love and built a life together alongside a detailed, blow-by-blow chronicle of their marital dismantling.
Baumbach‘s wise script goes from Bergmanesque drama, to dark comedy, to surges of suspense, and is complemented by the intimate 35mm camerawork of Robbie Ryan (who also shot Baumbach‘s The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)), and by the precise, lived-in performances not only of Driver and Johansson, but also of Laura Dern, Alan Alda, and Ray Liotta.
Marriage Story may have an ironic title, but its divorce proceedings double as a moving post-mortem. Sometimes our most profound life choices begin to cohere only in retrospect.

eOne Films x Mr. Will want to give Readers a chance to win Advance Passes to see QUEEN AND SLIM in Toronto, Scarborough, Vancouver, Calgary, Ottawa and Halifax on November 25, 2019.
Synopsis:
Costco worker Slim (Daniel Kaluuya) and criminal defense attorney Queen (Jodie Turner-Smith) go on a first date after meeting on Tinder. They hit it off, even though she tells him she picked him because he looked sad in his picture, which made her feel sorry for him. As they’re chatting on the drive home, Slim forgets to put his turn signal on and is pulled over by a white police officer.
The officer takes offense when Slim makes a comment about how cold it is outside and angrily tells Slim to put his hands up and get on the ground. Queen gets out of the car to ask why Slim is being arrested. She tells the police officer she’s an attorney and informs him she’s going to take out her cell phone. However, the police officer reaches for his gun. In the ensuing chaos, the police officer is shot dead and the entire incident is captured on his dashcam video.
Rather than turn themselves in and face a bigoted police force, Queen and Slim go on the run and are dubbed “the black Bonnie & Clyde.” Thrown together, the two begin to fall in love as they try to elude the authorities.

Synopsis:
Consummate con man Roy Courtnay (Ian McKellen) has set his sights on his latest mark: the recently widowed Betty McLeish (Helen Mirren), worth millions. And Roy means to take it all.
From their very first meeting, Roy begins plying Betty with his tried and true manipulations, and Betty, who seems quite taken with him, is soon going along for the ride. But this time, what should have been a simple swindle escalates into a cat-and-mouse game with the ultimate stakes—revealing more insidious deceptions that will take them both through a minefield of danger, intrigue and betrayal.
Legendary actors Helen Mirren (Oscar winner, “The Queen”) and Ian McKellen (two-time Oscar nominee, “Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring” and “Gods and Monsters”) star together on screen for the first time, in this smart and suspenseful thriller from New Line Cinema about the secrets people keep and the lies they live.
“The Good Liar” was directed by Bill Condon, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of “Gods and Monsters,” from a screenplay by Jeffrey Hatcher (“Mr. Holmes”), based on the widely acclaimed novel by Nicholas Searle. The main cast also includes Russell Tovey (“The History Boys,” “Quantico”) and Jim Carter (“Downton Abbey”).
The film was produced by Greg Yolen and Bill Condon. Richard Brener, Andrea Johnston, Aaron L. Gilbert, Jason Cloth, Anjay Nagpal, Jack Morrissey and Nick O’Hagan served as executive producers.
The creative filmmaking team included director of photography Tobias Schliessler (“Beauty and the Beast,” “Mr. Holmes”), production designer John Stevenson (“Burton and Taylor”), editor Virginia Katz (“Beauty and the Beast,” “Dreamgirls”), and costume designer Keith Madden (“Patrick Melrose,” “Mr. Holmes”). The music was composed by two-time Oscar nominee Carter Burwell (“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” “Carol”).

Following its $1.26 billion-grossing international success at the Box Office, en route to winning two Academy Awards, the reception for 2013’s FROZEN needless to say, was really exceedigly warm. Hence its successor, FROZEN II comes with much anticipation and expectation, reuniting stars Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel and Josh Gad together in Toronto for a Fan Event. The evening give fans not only a rare chance to see the stars, but also preview snippets of the Film, which still has yet to screen for Canadian Media.
The Film which sees Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee returning as Co-Directors, has sisters Elsa (Menzel) and Anna (Bell) venturing beyond their homeland of Arendelle to save their Kingdom. Along the way, they hope to understand the origins of Elsa’s magical powers, which had divided the sisters just three years prior.
See the Trailer:
Team Mr.Will had the joy of chatting with the Cast of Frozen II at the much-hyped Fan Event at Scotiabank Theatre, brought to us fittingly by The Weather Network.
We asked Menzel about Elsa‘s journey this time around. She says, “I’d say in the first one Elsa was more ashamed and apologetic of her powers and in Frozen II, she steps into her own and embraces them.”.
“They’re definitely not little girls anymore and hopefully like their audience, they are growing, maturing and evolving as young women. But ultimately, it is a love story between two sisters who push themselves to be the best that they can be and to find their self-love.”.
We ask Bell whether or not becoming a mother has affected the types of projects she’s taken on. She tells us, “It’s actually solidified the choices I’ve made and will make because I want my girls to know that I shape myself based on my own internal barometer. So even though I do shows that are darker like House of Lies, I might not show that to them now that they are six years old, but I’m so proud that this woman had a sexuality about her. So while I really do enjoy doing family projects, it hasn’t really affected my projects.”.
We ask Gad, who reprises his scene-stealing role as Olaf the Snowman, what it’s like being the breakout star of the Franchise. He jokes, “It feels great to be the breakout star of Frozen. I’m telling you at home I know I steal these movies, but this absolutely has to be kept in-house. I can’t let her (Bell) know, I can’t let Idina know, I don’t want to hurt their feelings.”.
Kidding aside, he states “It’s such an honour and a thrill growing up with Disney films, being a part of the generation that was given The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and The Lion King at a very young age. Being a part of telling those stories to a new generation, it’s such a dream come true.”.
