OZARK: SEASON THREE streams on Netflix Friday, March 27, 2020.

We’ve been following closely the progress of RUN THIS TOWN, the directorial debut from Writer/Director Ricky Tollman, since the Film was announced in March 2018. While the Film has been much-talked-about, finally its release is near some two years after it began production here in Toronto.

Set against a backdrop of a Rob Ford-run Toronto, Tollman‘s Film explores what it means for millennials to survive in this day and age. It centers on a young Journalist (Ben Platt) eager to break his first story at his publication where he has been relegated to compiling Top Ten lists. With the possibility of Ford‘s crack tape being exposed, his Political Aides (Mena Massoud, Nina Dobrev) fight to keep the news under wraps, while also saving their own jobs.

The Film premiered tonight in Toronto at Scotiabank Theatre and in attendance were Director/Writer Tollman, plus Toronto stars Massoud, best known for his starring role in Disney’s Aladdin and People’s Choice Award-winning The Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev. The Screening was followed by a Q&A and an After Party at Northern Maverick Brewing Company, where family and friends of Cast and Crew got a chance to kick-back with some libations and apps. Sanitizer also was seen circulating the room with wellness and prevention on everyone’s mind of late.

Our Justin Waldman had the opportunity to chat at the After Party with Tollman, Massoud and Dobrev.

Justin: What inspired you to choose this story about Rob Ford as your first Feature?

Ricky Tollman: “I didn’t see it as a Rob Ford story. I saw as a story about my friends and peers who I grew-up with and we all grew-up in 2010 watching Rob Ford escapades and they were taken as a joke at the time. And looking back at it in 2016 I kinda wish it wasn’t a joke as I was writing this Script when Donald Trump announced his candidacy. I thought we’ve seen this story before and maybe we shouldn’t have taken it as a joke because my friends in the United States and effectively around the world, are going to be affected by policy enacted by politicians like Donald Trump.”. He adds, “I wanted to do a story not about the politicians but maybe the people we haven’t heard from.”.

On his next endeavours, Tollman reveals, “I’m writing two things and will see which one makes it out alive. One is a Political Thriller which takes place in 1963 and the other is the FBI‘s investigation into an underworld that people may not know exists.”.

Justin: Tell us what attracted you to this Script.

Mena Massoud: “It’s like being the behind-the-scenes guy that never gets seen. It was an interesting role to play and I got an insight into the my Publicist’s day to day. A lot of stuff shoots here in Toronto that isn’t Canadian and this was, and that was special to me give back to the community I came from. I grew up here so it’s important to come back and tell Canadian stories.”.

Justin:  What’s it like making a Film that’s so rich in Toronto history?

Nina Dobrev: “That was one of the main reasons I wanted to do this Film. Not only getting to come home and see my family and friends, but also to celebrate this beautiful city that we live in. There’s so much Toronto has to offer. For the first time in a long time we got to feature CN Tower and all the other landmarks we know so well instead of coming to Toronto to shoot for New York or some other big city and hide the great place that we live in. It’s such a melting pot. Most of the people in this country are immigrants and we really got to showcase that and also the struggle, the ups-and-downs in the workplace and how difficult it is to find work.”.

Justin: What was the most challenging part of the Movie for you?

Nina Dobrev: “The only scene I shot with Damian Lewis, but not because of Damian Lewis –  he’s an amazing, talented actor. The scene was kinda difficult, creepy and cringe-worthy and let’s just say there wasn’t a lot of acting required. It was really uncomfortable.”.

Let’s face it, this weather has been pretty miserable this past week. The 2020 Acura ILX was there to lift us up out of these winter blahs! We previewed the vehicle in a gorgeous Apex Blue Pearl. One peek inside, we see its jaw-dropping red interior, black headliner, red illumination and stainless steel sport pedals. The ILX has a sporty sensibility, sleek and sexy, empowering its driver with a boost of confidence and style.

The car is powered by a 2.4L, 4-cylinder engine with 201 Horsepower and an 8 Speed Dual-Clutch Transmission. It bodes for a smooth drive which navigates easily with a tough, athletic composition. Drives down the 407, 401 and through bumpy, sloshy dirt roads all were handled like a pro by the ILX.

The ride is chalk-full of luxuries. It stands out with its Jewel Eye LED headlights, a beautiful Moonroof, giving your drive ambience. A Remote Engine Starter enables you to pop your trunk within proximity, is designed to make your life easier, although we do wish it had Proximity Entry too. Driver and passenger Seat Warmers are a blessing.

The car’s Multi-Use Display allows you to view road navigation, your smartphone, general info, climate control, audio and more.  We do wish it had a few more charging port options with a couple ports under the driver’s arm rest, the USB port a bit tricky to use. Acura has collaborated with eight-time Grammy®* award-winning music producer, mixer, and engineer Elliot Scheiner on the ILX‘s ELS Studio® Premium Audio System. You can judge for yourself how it sounds!

Above this, the ILX also brilliantly tracks the sun’s position while a solar sensor helping maintain the vehicle’s temperature in its dual zones. Rain-sensing wipers are an added convenience, letting you drive with a clear view and focus.

Safety definitely is a priority, in addition to its optics. The ILX is armed with AcuraWatch™ coming with two cameras and six sensors which work together to help you avoid hazards on the road. The Multi-Angle Rearview Camera is a parking and reversing godsend, making city parking a breeze!

Its Anti-lock Braking System* (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist, Collision Mitigation Braking System, Road Departure Mitigation, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Assist and Vehicle Stability Assist to ensure we’re as safe as we can be even in horrible weather like we’ve been subject to. It also comes with a litany of airbag options: Dual-stage, multiple threshold front airbags and front side airbags.

We do wish the ILX had an ECON MODE like its sister offerings at Honda.  Fuel Economy tallies in at City/Highway/Combined 9.9/7.0/8.6L per 100 km which is great if you are driving often in the city, but less advantageous if you drive often on the highway.

The 2020 CAFTCAD (Canadian Alliance of Film & Television Costume Arts & Design) Awards took place this past weekend at the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto. The Awards celebrated excellence in Canadian Costume Design over 15 categories in Film and Television. This year an International category was created, qualifying nomineees who are either Canadian or have Permanent Resident status, while costumes had to appear in productions that were produced in Canada. Co-Productions had to feature  a minimum 50% costumes built in Canada. Winners named are Song of Names (International – Film) and Daybreak, 107, Canta Tu Vida (International – Television).

Disney’s Artemis Fowl is in theatres Friday, May 28, 2020.

There’s nothing invisible about the love moviegoers are having for THE INVISIBLE MAN. The Leigh Whannell adaptation finds itself at #1 in its debut this weekend for Universal Pictures/Blumhouse, with $27 million from 3,610 theatres.  The Horror gets 89% on the Tomatometer and a B+ CinemaScore, which is high for the genre.

In second is SONIC THE HEDGEHOG with $15.5 million from 4,177 theatres for Paramount Pictures, bringing its three week tally to $127.8 million in North America.

Third is THE CALL OF THE WILD with $13.4 million from 3,865 theatres of Disney, a two week take of $46.1 million.

Fourth is a surprising MY HERO ACADEMIA: HEROES RISING with $5.7 million from 1,260 theatres for Funimation Films. This has opened only in the U.S.

Seventh spot goes to IMPRACTICAL JOKERS: THE MOVIE with $2.8 million from 1,705 theatres for Warner Bros. Over two weeks, the TV Show branch-off  has grossed $5.9 million.

FANTASY ISLAND rounds it all out with $2.4 million from 2,724 theatres, a three week total of $24 million for Sony Pictures. It was made for $7 million.

Story:
