Markham’s own IMAN VELLANI unveiled her amazing new Series MS. MARVEL tonight at a Special Advance Screening for the Disney+ Series. The Series centers on a New Jersey teen named Kamala Khan (Vellani), obsessed with the Avengers, who discovers her own powers – that she’s a Superhero!
We were so lucky to get to chat with this breakout star tonight at the Red Carpet, held at Cineplex Yonge & Dundas where Vellani‘s family and friends showed-up to give her support.
Vellani chat with us all about landing the gig of a lifetime, walking us right through the exact moment her world would change forever.
Vellani: “I was on my friend’s driveway, it was the last day of school, and Sarah Finn (Casting Director) texts me, and she’s like ‘Can you get on this call?’. And I’m like ‘No’. My friends hadn’t known I’d auditioned. And she was like, ‘I’ll send you the link, get on 😉’. I’m like okay, and I get out of my friend’s car and I’m on the driveaway, and I just open my phone and it’s Kevin Feige‘s (President of Marvel Studios) face. I could not handle that! I could not breathe. And here we are, we’re still alive and breathing and he told me I got the part. So I went back into my friend’s car and she asked, ‘So what happened? Did you win the lottery?’. And I said, “Basically!’. And then we went for Burritos. It was a good day!”.
What’s one piece of advice Ms. Marvel would give Iman Vellani?
Vellani: “Take pride in who you are. She’s so unapologetically herself. She doesn’t change herself for any boy, any friend and I think that’s so admirable in this world of Social Media where we’re constantly putting on different faces. We don’t even know who we are at the end of the day when we look at the mirror. I think I’ve found so much solace in Kamala and how much she knows herself.”.
What was her biggest challenge?
Vellani: “It was pretty easy. I was like, just being myself. It was great!”.

April and May have been absolutely bonkers. Not sure if yours was the same? The Pandemic brought us a bit of downtime, but since this province’s reopening, it’s been literally everything all at once these past couple months in catch-ups. With multiple Red Carpet events back-to-back like the Juno Awards and the David Foster Foundation A Night on Broadway Gala, plus Premieres for Box Office smashes like Top Gun: Maverick and Downton Abbey: A New Era this past bit, plus family gatherings and a wedding even, we’re delighted to be in the thick of all the action again. But more so look forward to a slower pace in June!
We couldn’t have made it through Victoria Day weekend and all our commitments without the help of the gorgeous 2022 HONDA CR-V BLACK EDITION. While we’ve driven many CR-Vs in the past, none match the sophistication and style of the Black Edition with its perforated black leather seats, black woodgrain interior trim, and black-painted 19″ wheels which set it apart from the others.
Let’s get superficial for a moment, because looks matter and the SUV does not disappoint. Once glance it its Ambient Lighting front door handles and rear-tinted windows, you’ll see this is all in the details and the Black Edition possesses a sleek sense of mystery, and we’re all about it. We love also that its Panoramic Moonroof, can be adjusted to allow more or less light in, which can be crucial in these hot Summer months ahead.
This CR-V is powered with a 1.5 litre, 16-valve, Direct Injection, DOHC, turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with 190 horsepower and 179 -lb.ft. of torque. While acceleration can be a click behind to start, once you’re rolling, its sheer power is undeniable.
Gas prices are on all our minds of late with Ontario seeing $2 litres of gas for the first time in history. You’ll be relieved to know that the CR-V is economy-minded at a Fuel Economy of 8.7/7.4/8.1 L/100 KM (City/Hwy/Combined). Above this, the SUV benefits from having an ECON Mode and Idle Stop features.
Honda is known for its Driver and Passenger Intuitiveness and nails the mark yet again here. The Driver’s Seat goes 12-ways with power adjustment with added Lumbar Support here, and the Driver’s Position can be saved and set via Seat Position Memory. Front and Passener Seats come with warmers, as does the Leather Steering Wheel. We love that Climate Control once again here is customizable and sync-able for Driver and Passenger, really showing that Honda gets individual needs of Driver and Passenger. This, and also the many, many charging ports on the front and back sides, plus Wireless Charging plate. We love Proximity Entry and Remote Starter options, the latter which makes this a car for all the seasons we experience here in Ontario. How many cold mornings have you wished you could have had that car warmed and ready for you?
We cannot stress how important the Audio and Entertainment experience is on our drives. The CR-V Black Edition comes with a 331-watt AM/FM Premium audio system with MP3/Windows MediaÂŽ Audio playback capability and 9 speakers including subwoofer. This is an unparalleled sound experience and no matter whether we’re listening to SiriusXM™, or connecting to Spotify on our phone via Bluetooth, we’re hearing our Music exactly the way the Artist intended – full, crisp and full of detail.
Safety is always first and foremost with Honda and they round-up the troops again here to ensure you are as safe as can be with the 2022 Honda CR-V Black Edition. We appreciate always having an extra pair of eyes and that Multi-angle Rearview Camera with dynamic guidelines makes reversing and parking so simple. Smart features like Auto High-Beam, Rain-Sensing Windshield Wipers (and Rear-Windshield Wipers too!) are things we appreciate. We know how bad our weather can get – case in point – a destructive thunder shower Southwestern Ontario witnessed. Every added bit of visibility matters.
The CR-V benefits on the daily from features like its Blindpsot Information, Rear Cross Traffic Monitor system, Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBSÂŽ), Forward Collision Warning (FCW) system, Lane Departure Warning (LDW) system, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Low Speed Follow (LSF), Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS), Road Departure Mitigation (RDM) system and Vehicle Stability Assist (VSAÂŽ) with Traction Control, ensuring you’re alert and driving well even when you are just doing your best to make it through these exhausting times.
If you’ve ever had a flat tire (and we have a few times!), you’d know how important it is to have a Tire Pressure Monitoring System* (TPMS). The CR-V comes with this.
In addition to Collision Warnings, the SUV comes with a plethora of airbag protection: i-SRS airbag system (front), Side curtain airbags with rollover sensor system and SmartVent™ side airbags. These are the features that continue to save lives on the daily.
…and did we mention the incredible storage space here?
The 2022 HONDA CR-V BLACK EDITION starts at $45,370 CAN. More here.
Some highlights from our week. Some incredible taste-filled adventures, celebrations and sightings!

It comes as absolutely no surprise that TOP GUN: MAVERICK flies high in its debut this weekend, setting a personal best for Tom Cruise being his first ever opening to surpass $100 million, while setting a U.s. Coming off the success of Shoplifters, Writer-Director Hirokazu Kore-eda is back with another beautiful depiction of a chosen family.
So-young (Ji-eun Lee) makes the tough choice to leave her newborn at the Baby Box facility. Itâs a place where people can leave their children in the hopes of them being adopted. However, Brokers Sang-hyun (Song Kang-ho) and Dong-soo (Dong-won Gang) make the decision to take the baby home with them in order to sell it to a loving family. To their surprise, So-young returns for her baby. When the two men tell her their plan, she joins them on their journey to find suitable parents.
Kore-eda has a keen eye for what makes a family. Just like Shoplifters, this is a story of making your own family. However, itâs also about knowing when to say goodbye. The premise doesnât sound like it will be a heartbreaker, but Kore-edaâs empathetic eye makes this story a tender, emotional journey about belonging.
Just like the best Tearjerkers, Broker is laced with relatable Comedy. This humour comes from the relationship that flourishes between these characters. It all comes together once the three realize that a young boy from the orphanage they visited has snuck into their van. This is the start of their own quirky family beginning to grow. Heâs a cute addition to this bunch and they fall into sync quickly.
Brokerâs steady pacing allows audiences to get to know each character. We empathize with So-young, a woman on the run searching for a way out. What she finds instead, is a family that she didnât know was possible. Lee stuns, giving depth to the textured So-young. One scene she shares with Gang takes place on a Ferris Wheel. The authenticity and chemistry between them is spellbinding. There wonât be a dry eye in the audience. While Kang-ho shines bright as the pseudo-father of this lovable dysfunctional family. He evokes the nostalgia for being the patriarch after his first family has cut ties.
Broker connects universally.

Mark Rylance stars alongside Sally Hawkins in Craig Robertsâ The Phantom of the Open, a charming dramedy that tells the unbelievable â yet true â story of Maurice Flitcroft, a British crane operator who became known as the âworldâs worst golfer.â
Script is by Simon Farnaby, based on the same-titled book he wrotewith Scott Murray. No surprise that the film is filled with humour and heart, given that Farnaby was also the Paddington 2 script.
Maurice (Rylance) lives with his loving wife (Hawkins) and theirthree boys in Barrow-in Furness, an English port town where heâs employed at the local shipyard. But when 1976 arrives, redundancies
are looming, causing Maurice to wonder what he will do with his spare time â that is, until he sees a golf game on the telly. Heâs always been a life-long optimist. So at age 46, without having played a round of golf in his life, he finds a way to enter the British Open Golf Championship.
When Maurice shoots the worst score in the Open history, he draws the ire of the golfing elite and becomes a folk hero in the process.
Also starring is Rhys Ifans as the Openâs uptight guardian, Christian and Jonah Lees as the Flitcroftsâ twin sons who are following their own dream of becoming disco champs (what fun to see them whirling
and twirling!) and Jake Davies as their older son who is worried that his embarrassing dad might damage his career as a manager at the shipyard.
Adding to the effervescent feeling is the bubbly pop music, from Abbaâs âMoney Money Moneyâ to The Foundationsâ âBuild Me Up Buttercupâ.
THE PHANTOM OF THE OPEN opens June 17, 2022 in Toronto, Vancouver,
Montreal, Ottawa and more via Mongrel Media.
