Award-winning comedy entertainment studio and 360-degree brand marketing leader New Metric Media, in association with Bay Mills Studios, is excited to announce that new original comedic miniseries HATE THE PLAYER: THE BEN JOHNSON STORY is off the blocks and running. Anthem Sports & Entertainment’s linear network GameTV has commissioned the six-episode series and will be its exclusive cable home in Canada, while Paramount+ in Canada, which developed the series with New Metric, will be its exclusive streaming platform in the country. Shamier Anderson (John Wick 4, Invasion – seen above) stars as Ben Johnson and will also serve as an Executive Producer for Bay Mills Studios.
HATE THE PLAYER: THE BEN JOHNSON STORY is Canadian sprinter Johnson’s definitely-not-biased account of the doping controversy that rocked the 1988 Olympics when he tested positive for banned steroid use, going from hero to zero in 9.79 seconds in what some called “The Dirtiest Race in History”. The series takes a revealing and satirical look at the events surrounding the legendary race and the scandal behind the scandal. New Metric Media identified and put the project together, entering into development on the series with Paramount+ in Canada in 2023.
The series is created by BAFTA-winning and Emmy-nominated writer Anthony Q. Farrell (The Office, Shelved, Run the Burbs), who serves as showrunner and Executive Producer. New Metric Media CEO Mark Montefiore (Letterkenny, Shoresy, Children Ruin Everything) and director R.T. Thorne will also executive produce, alongside Anderson and Stephan James for Bay Mills Studio. Lana Maclin and Max Wolfond serve as Producer and Supervising Producer, respectively, for New Metric. Thorne (The Porter) and Cory Bowles (Trailer Park Boys) are set to direct.
Series star Shamier Anderson can currently be seen in the massively successful John Wick 4, as well as Simon Kinberg’s Invasion on AppleTV+, which will launch its third season later this year. He also starred opposite Paul Walter Hauser in IFC Films’ The Luckiest Man in America, which premiered at TIFF 2024.
“Everyone thinks they know the story of Ben Johnson and the scandal that has followed him since the 1988 Olympics, but they won’t know what hit them with HATE THE PLAYER,” said Shamier Anderson. “For me, this hits differently. I grew up in Scarborough, where Ben trained, where his name still echoes. He was a hometown legend. Yes complicated, but also someone people rooted for. Being able to step into his shoes, especially with a lens that blends comedy and Ben’s point of view, means a lot. And getting to do it alongside New Metric Media, who’ve been killing it in comedy, is a real honour, not just as an actor, but as an executive producer with my company, Bay Mills Studios.”
Anderson is represented by OAZ, Mosaic, CAA and Jackoway Austen Tyerman. Farrell is represented by Sheree Guitar Entertainment, Ambition Talent and Jonathan Shikora (LGN Law).
“From the outset, we knew two things to be true. One, people knew what Ben Johnson did to the world, but not what the world did to Ben Johnson. And two, if we were lucky enough to tell this story, that Shamier Anderson had to play Ben. Full stop,” said New Metric Media CEO Mark Montefiore. “Anthony’s take on the story is inventive, hilarious, completely irreverent and we are proud to be working with GameTV and Paramount+, who have shown nothing but giant cajónes in supporting this project.”
“This marks an exciting milestone for GameTV, giving us the unique opportunity to present a major original Canadian program offering on our network,” said Maria Donatelli, Vice President of Programming, GameTV. “HATE THE PLAYER embodies the bold, genre-busting storytelling we’re proud to champion. It’s a fearless, fast-paced comedy that dares to reimagine a moment in Canadian sports history with sharp wit and wild energy, we look forward to sharing it with our viewers.”
“From announcing the development of New Metric’s HATE THE PLAYER at Banff in 2023 to now partnering with Anthem Sports & Entertainment’s GameTV for the greenlight, we’re excited to see this bold, comedic take on an iconic Canadian story move to production,” said Vanessa Case, Vice President of Content at Paramount+ and Pluto TV Canada. “Paramount+ is proud to have championed this project from the start, and this collaboration marks an exciting and innovative model for us — a streamer joining forces with a linear broadcaster to deliver compelling Canadian content to even broader audiences and providing another sustainable model for the Canadian production community.”
Set to debut on GameTV and Paramount+ in Canada simultaneously in early 2026, HATE THE PLAYER: THE BEN JOHNSON STORY is being produced with participation from Ben Johnson and is inspired by extensive research conducted by Canadian author and journalist, Mary Ormsby. Principal photography begins on June 20, 2025, at Dark Slope Studios in Toronto. New Metric Media is distributing the miniseries internationally.
Saddle up for heartfelt storytelling, sweeping landscapes, and a fresh take on stories rooted in faith, family and the strength found in unity when Crossroad Springs makes its series debut on Super Channel Heart & Home on Sunday, September 7, 2025 at 8 PM ET.
This moving new six-part hour-long drama is built on the simple but powerful idea that the end of one road can lead to something greater. Crossroad Springs explores the journey of the Hamilton family facing a pivotal turning point and a town becoming a symbol of resilience, purpose, and hope.
Featuring a stellar ensemble cast beloved by Canadian audiences, the series stars Jonathan Stoddard (A Royal Christmas Ballet), Emily Alalato (Christmas In Maple Hills), Shaun Johnston (Heartland), Kate Drummond (Heartland/Wynona Earp), Brittany Underwood (A Royal Christmas Ballet), Jesse Hutch (A Little Women’s Christmas), Jon McLaren (“When Hope Calls”), Erin Agostino (The Jingle Bell Jubilee), and Franco Lo Presti (Bad Blood).
Crossroad Springs follows adult siblings James (Stoddard) and Janet (Alatalo) Hamilton and their aging family members, dad, Willis (Johnston), and Aunt Amy (Drummond), who are eking out a living on Hamilton Ranch with financial hardships and staffing shortages. James, a pastor in Chicago, and Janet, an ER doctor in a neighboring town, feel called to return home to help the family. Once there, the siblings encounter the son of the owner of the neighboring farm, Daniel Newman (Hutch), who are all wary of each other due to a generational feud between the families. As he settles into his new day-to-day life on the farm, James begins to realize there are no places to worship on the thousands of acres of farms. There, in the environment of come-as-you-are vibes, barns, rodeo arenas, even outdoors under clear night skies, James starts a cowboy church right there in the place where faith, family, and ranch life go hand in hand.
“We’re thrilled to bring Crossroad Springs to Super Channel Heart & Home,” says Don McDonald, President & CEO at Super Channel. “This beautifully told drama fits perfectly alongside beloved series like When Hope Calls and When Calls the Heart. With its strong sense of place, emotional authenticity, and focus on family, faith, and community, Crossroad Springs delivers the kind of uplifting storytelling our viewers connect with and continue to seek out.”
Crossroad Springs” is produced by Brain Power Studio in association with Nicely Entertainment. Executive Produced by Beth Stevenson and Nacey Yeaman. Produced by Jessica Reis. Directed by Marco Deufemia and written by Paula Tiberius.

The all-new feature film, 20th Century Studios’ “Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere,” chronicles the making of Bruce Springsteen’s 1982 “Nebraska” album, a raw, haunted acoustic record that marked a pivotal time in his life and is considered one of his most enduring works.
Director Scott Cooper, who wrote the script for the screen based on the book “Deliver Me from Nowhere” by Warren Zanes, said, “Making ‘Springsteen’ was deeply moving as it allowed me to step inside the soul of an artist I’ve long admired – and to witness, up close, the vulnerability and strength behind his music. The experience felt like a journey through memory, myth, and truth. And more than anything, it was a privilege to translate that raw emotional honesty to the screen, and in doing so, it changed me. I cannot thank Bruce and Jon Landau enough for allowing me to tell their story.”
From 20th Century Studios, “Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere” chronicles the making of Bruce Springsteen’s 1982 “Nebraska” album when he was a young musician on the cusp of global superstardom, struggling to reconcile the pressures of success with the ghosts of his past. Recorded on a 4-track recorder in Springsteen’s New Jersey bedroom, the album marked a pivotal time in his life and is considered one of his most enduring works—a raw, haunted acoustic record populated by lost souls searching for a reason to believe.
Starring Jeremy Allen White as the Boss, the film is written for the screen and directed by Scott Cooper based on the book “Deliver Me from Nowhere” by Warren Zanes. “Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere” also features Jeremy Strong as Springsteen’s long-time confidant and manager, Jon Landau; Paul Walter Hauser as guitar tech Mike Batlan; Stephen Graham as Springsteen’s father, Doug; Odessa Young as love interest, Faye; Gaby Hoffman as Springsteen’s mom, Adele; Marc Maron as Chuck Plotkin; and David Krumholtz as Columbia executive, Al Teller. Arriving only in theatres October 24, 2025, the film is produced by Cooper, Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Eric Robinson and Scott Stuber. Tracey Landon, Jon Vein, and Zanes executive produce.
MUBI, the global distributor, streaming service and production company, is pleased to announce the release date for Oliver Hermanus’ (Living, Moffie) latest feature film The History of Sound, in theatres from September 19, 2025.
Directed by Oliver Hermanus and written by Ben Shattuck (based on his short story), the film stars Paul Mescal (Gladiator, Aftersun, All of us Strangers), Josh O’Connor (The Crown, Challengers, La Chimera) and Chris Cooper (Adaptation, American Beauty, The Bourne Identity).
In 1917, Lionel— a young, talented music student—meets David at the Boston Conservatory, where they bond over a deep love of folk music. Years later, Lionel receives a letter from David, leading to an impromptu journey through the backwoods of Maine to collect traditional songs. This unexpected reunion, ensuing love affair, and the music they collect and preserve, will shape the course of Lionel’s life far beyond his own awareness.
