Counting down to the final chapter, the cast, creators, and executive producers of ‘Stranger Things’ set the stage for what’s to come and where we find our characters at the start of the season, as told to Tudum:
“Eleven is in training mode. She’s in a warrior state, which is the first time you see Eleven like that at the beginning of a season. As for her mindset, all she is thinking about is protecting her friends. Her friends are her chosen family, so she will do whatever it takes to protect them and we’re going to see that.”
“Dustin is kind of in a bit of a funk. I think everybody probably is considering the state that Hawkins is in, and it’s getting a little bit harder for the gang to keep all the pieces together. We’re all dealing with the day-to-day issues of what it is to try to keep everybody safe and figure out where Vecna is, while having a lot of unpacked baggage from the events in the previous season.”
“It’s always been in the beginning of a season that everything is all good, but this is the first season we come into it and the stakes are the same as where we left off. We haven’t defeated Vecna and the problem is still there. We’re still trying to figure it out and we may not be able to figure it out, so you feel that burden on Lucas as well as everyone else on the show. Everyone is on edge and we’re all just trying to keep hope alive.”
“Will is back in Hawkins this season. He was out of Hawkins for the last season, so now we’re seeing the effects of him being back in that realm. We kind of hit the ground running right away this season, which is really exciting and not how we’ve started any other season. Everyone is all in one place and we all have the same objective.”
“We ended Season 4 in a tough place for Max. Her final moments were her in a hospital bed. Eleven was searching for her in the void and couldn’t find her, so Max is definitely not the way she once was. There’s still a small glimmer of hope, though, and her friends are hanging on to that.”
“Mike is back in leadership mode, and he’s kind of taken it more upon himself to help plan out these missions, and he and the whole gang are devoted to finding Vecna and ending this.”
“I think what’s unique about this season is that it starts a little bit in chaos because our heroes ultimately lost at the end of Season 4. We usually set up their normal life and how they’re going about school, and then we introduce the supernatural element. But in this case, this season is sprinting from the start.”
“The action is next level, the visual effects are next level, but I’m also happy to say that the emotional center remains the same. And part of the magic of this show is that even as we evolve, even as the storytelling becomes more epic, it’s always anchored in these characters that we love.”

Created by The Duffer Brothers, Stranger Things debuted in 2016 and quickly became one of Netflix’s most popular television series ever, with its fourth season alone amassing over 140.7M views globally. Rooted in ‘80s nostalgia, it boosted Kate Bush’s track “Running Up That Hill” into the Billboard Hot 100 chart for the first time in its 38-year history. To celebrate the conclusion of the record-breaking series, Netflix announced today it will bring the finale episode of Stranger Things 5 to select theaters nationwide.
The screenings will take place in over 350 theaters in the U.S. and Canada starting on December 31, 2025 at 5:00pm PT, timed to the finale’s global premiere on Netflix, and run through January 1, 2026.
Speaking to Netflix’s Tudum, the Duffer Brothers said: “We’re beyond excited that fans will have the chance to experience the final episode of Stranger Things in theaters — it’s something we’ve dreamed about for years, and we’re so grateful to Ted, Bela, and everyone at Netflix for making it happen. Getting to see it on the big screen, with incredible sound, picture, and a room full of fans, feels like the perfect — dare we say bitchin’ — way to celebrate the end of this adventure.”

NETFLIX held their NEXT ON NETFLIX 2025 Preview yesterday in Los Angeles at Grauman’s Egyptian Theatre. A satellite event was held in Toronto at Design Exchange, with an exclusive Canadian content preview appended to the presentation with Netflix Canada‘s Danielle Woodrow and Tara Woodbury. Canadian Comedian Mae Martin gives the Thriller genre a try with their upcoming series WAYWARD and spoke about it for the first time, unable to hide their deep admiration for Co-star Toni Collette. A snippet of new series NORTH OF NORTH also was presented, which Woodrow and Woodbury have very high hopes for.
While The New York Times on the perceived lack of inspiration in Film and Television today, posed the question back in November in an opinion piece titled “Is Creativity Dead?“, Netflix‘s Chief Content Officer, Bela Bajaria had a very confident and short response: “Not at Netflix“.
The streaming giant showcased its exciting upcoming programming slate, which ranges from domestic and international films to series, to sports, and now even gaming. They acknowledge that their big swings might not always lead to reward, but a perfect example of big payoff is Chairman of Netflix Film Dan Lin‘s first ever acquisition for Netflix coming out of Cannes, the now 13-time Oscar-nominated EMILIA PÉREZ. Not a bad start and a hint at bigger things to come ahead.
The Toronto audience got to hear about upcoming projects from the likes of Ben Affleck, John Mulaney, Tina Fey, CM PUNK, Rhea Ripley, and Stranger Things creators, The Duffer Brothers and there’s plenty to be excited about.
Highlights included a sneak peaks at the final season of SQUID GAME which is set to arrive June 27; some riveting footage from Joe Carnahan’s just-wrapped RIP reuniting Ben Affleck and Matt Damon; promising “prestige television” series BLACK RABBIT (starring Jude Law and Jason Bateman) and ZERO DAY (starring Robert De Niro); some spectacular snippets of Guillermo del Toro‘s Toronto-filmed FRANKENSTEIN; a behind-the-scenes look at the final season of more-cinematic-than-ever STRANGER THINGS; plus a couple intriguing series like a Tina Fey series adaptation of the 1981 Film THE FOUR SEASONS, and a series adaptation of Judy Blume‘s 1975 coming-of-age novel, FOREVER. And above this, there was a very riveting snippet of an upcoming Victoria Beckham Documentary which has us pining for more.
