In Apocalypse in the Tropics, director Petra Costa takes us on a decade-long journey through the spiritual and political upheaval of Brazil. What begins as a search for signs of life in a fragile democracy transforms into a deeper inquiry into the seductions of power, prophecy and belief. Costa gains extraordinary access to current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, former President Jair Bolsonaro and the nation’s magnetic televangelist Silas Malafaia. Lights, Camera, Lawn Chairs! The Canadian Film Centre (CFC) today announced its free outdoor film festival lineup taking place July 18 and 19, 2025 at the CFC campus on Windfields Estate in North York. Celebrating Canadian film one story at a time, the CFC Outdoor Film Festival invites cinephiles to enjoy a selection of inspiring homegrown movies this summer from CFC alumni.

With support from Presenting Partner MUBI, CFC will screen Bobby Singh Brown’s debut feature Stealing Vows on Friday, July 18 at 9:00 PM, with Brown and the cast in attendance for a post-screening Q&A, and Jeremy Schaulin-Rioux and Kirk Thomas’ award-winning documentary Handle With Care: The Legend of the Notic Streetball Crew will screen on Saturday, July 19 at 9:00 PM. Each feature will be preceded by short films created by residents of the CFC’s Norman Jewison Film Program. First making a name for themselves at the NBA Hoop It Up tournament near Science World in 2003, the group unleashed a whole new arsenal of unique tricks and moves on the coattails of the famous And1 Mix Tape streetball movement. The VHS highlights comprising their first mix tape were revolutionary. This documentary has revived the original group of basketball players and is shot by the original makers, Jeremy Schaulin-Rioux and Kirk Thomas, who now chronicle the group’s rise, fall, and rebirth in true documentary fashion.

Toronto may be in the midst of a heat wave, but summer festival season is about to get hotter by 98 Degrees. The mercury and excitement is rising for Canada’s favourite fair as the Canadian National Exhibition announces its full 2025 Bell CNE Bandshell line-up set to hit the stage beginning August 15th. Offering the best of homegrown talent to international music superstars, this year’s CNE concert line-up has something for everyone including chart-topping ballad hitmakers 98 Degrees; Canadian supergroup Trans-Canada Highwaymen made up of Moe Berg (The Pursuit of Happiness), Chris Murphy (Sloan), Craig Northey (Odds), and Steven Page (ex-Barenaked Ladies); Vancouver’s iconic alt-rock band Moist led by David Usher, returning to the Bell CNE Bandshell stage since their last appearance in 2018; as well as California’s Cold War Kids and Hamilton’s The Dirty Nil.

From supergroups to super-pairings: Toronto’s Queen of R&B Soul Jully Black will open for legendary “Brick House” Motown group The Commodores; the Godfather of Canadian reggae Jay Douglas teams up with one of Jamaica’s most iconic figures of roots reggae, Luciano; folk-rockers The Rural Alberta Advantage pair up with special guest Yukon Blonde; and Grammy-winning Canadian singer-songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk headlines with Toronto-based indie ensemble Stars, who are extending their 20th anniversary tour of their critically acclaimed album, Set Yourself on Fire. Celebrating ‘Hot Girl Summer 2.0’ and putting female empowerment front and centre on the Bell CNE Bandshell Stage will be the trifecta of Rêve (“Ctrl + Alt + Del”), Jessia (“I’m Not Pretty”), and Aqyila (“Bloom”).
