Hollywood Suite is excited to announce the Canadian television premiere of The Contestant, a gripping documentary that sheds light on our cultural fascination with reality television and oversharing-obsessed culture. Directed by Clair Titley and narrated by Fred Armisen, the film tells the true story of Tomoaki Hamatsu, a Japanese reality TV star left naked in a room for more than a year and tasked with entering contests to earn food and clothing. The Contestant, which had its world premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, will debut on Hollywood Suite On Demand on July 1, and have its broadcast premiere July 20, 2024 at 9pm ET.
Cut off from the outside world, Hamatsu, nicknamed Nasubi (Japanese for “Eggplant”), was stripped and left with a stack of magazines. Everything he needed to survive could be won by entering sweepstakes, with sights on reaching the prize goal of one million yen.
“I was immediately charmed and fascinated by Nasubi,” said Sharon Stevens, Vice President, Programming, Hollywood Suite. “Shot in 1998, the filmmakers deftly handle this unbelievable story that was a precursor to the reality TV boom that would take over Western culture in the years that followed.”
The Contestant will be available on Hollywood Suite On Demand beginning July 1. The film was produced by Misfits Entertainment and MRC Television.
Today we got a new teaser for Robert Eggers‘ eagerly-awaited. NOSFERATU, in theatres this Christmas via Focus Features.

Production on the sequel to “Freaky Friday,” the studio’s hit comedy from 2003 starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, began today in Los Angeles. The film will be released in theatres nationwide in 2025.
Curtis and Lohan reprise their roles as Tess and Anna Coleman. Other returning cast members from the original film include Mark Harmon, Chad Michael Murray, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Rosalind Chao. They are joined by Julia Butters, Sophia Hammons, Manny Jacinto, and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan.
The film is directed by Nisha Ganatra. The producers are Kristin Burr, Andrew Gunn, and Jamie Lee Curtis, with Nathan Kelly, Ann Marie Sanderlin, and Lindsay Lohan serving as executive producers. A sequel to the beloved 2003 film with a multigenerational twist, the film picks up years after Tess (Curtis) and Anna (Lohan) endured an identity crisis. Anna now has a daughter of her own and a soon-to-be stepdaughter. As they navigate the myriad challenges that come when two families merge, Tess and Anna discover that lightning might indeed strike twice.

Paramount+ today announced that production is underway on the political espionage thriller THE AGENCY (w/t) with two time Academy Award nominee Michael Fassbender set as star and executive producer. George Clooney and Grant Heslov will executive produce through their Smokehouse Pictures with Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios set to produce.
THE AGENCY is a fresh take on the critically acclaimed hit French drama Le Bureau des Légendes (The Bureau internationally). The series will stream internationally on Paramount+ in Canada, the UK, Australia, Italy, Germany, Latin America, Brazil and Japan. The series is co-distributed internationally by Paramount Global Content Distribution and Federation Studios.
The series follows Martian (Fassbender), a covert CIA agent ordered to abandon his undercover life and return to London Station. When the love he left behind reappears, romance reignites. His career, his real identity and his mission are pitted against his heart; hurling them both into a deadly game of international intrigue and espionage.

INSIDE OUT 2 continues to turn it up, bringing-in a stellar $90 million in its second weekend out for Disney. This number is a record for best second week ever for an Animated Feature, taking it to $345 million already, domestically.
BAD BOYS: RIDE OR DIE continues to performing fantastically, taking $18 million in its third weekend for Sony Pictures, a tally of $146 million over three weekends.
Third goes to a debuting THE BIKERIDERS with $9.5 million from 2,665 theatres for Focus Features/Universal Pictures. This Jeff Nichols film starring Austin Butler and Jodie Comer, gets 82% on the Tomatometer.
In fourth is THE GARFIELD MOVIE with $4 million, taking it to $85 million over five weekends for Sony Pictures.
Rounding things off is THE KINGDOM OF THE PLANET OF THE APES with $3.7 million, a total domestic run of $165 million for 20th Century Studios.
