INK Entertainment, led by CEO and Founder Charles Khabouth and Partner and President Danny Soberano, proudly announces the highly anticipated opening of Portland Square on Friday, July 25th. Located at the iconic intersection of King Street West and Portland Street, Portland Square reimagines an entire corner of the city’s most vibrant neighbourhood as a transformative, multi-level dining destination that blends playful storytelling, bold design, and unforgettable menus.
“Portland Square marks an exciting new chapter for King West, right at its hottest intersection,” says Charles Khabouth, CEO and Founder of INK Entertainment. “We’ve completely reimagined this building to bring something fresh, playful, and unexpected to the neighbourhood: four unique concepts under one roof, each with its own personality but all sharing the vibrant King West spirit. From the kitschy mobster theme of Primadonna’s Italian dining and rooftop patio to the bold flavours of Honey Chinese, the versatile Portland Room event space, and Rodeo Dive, our lively country sports bar, it’s four fun worlds, one destination. Every detail, from the carefully sourced ingredients on each menu to the striking murals and interiors, has been thoughtfully curated to create an atmosphere that feels bold, fresh, fun, and distinctly King West. With this multi-level dining destination, we’re proud to offer an experience that we believe will become the new heartbeat of King West.”
The Four Distinct Concepts:
· Primadonna (4th Floor & Rooftop):
A refreshed, kitschy space that playfully nods to Italian mobster legends and the bold, glamorous world of mob wives. Plush banquettes, vintage art, and playful details channel the spirit of classic red sauce joints, while a standout mural is set to become the must-snap, photo-worthy moment of every visit. Executive Chef Marc explains the menu features hearty, comforting dishes rooted in Italian American tradition, made with love and served with a sense of fun and true hospitality.
· Honey Chinese (3rd Floor):
Designed by award-winning designers Nivek Remas, Honey Chinese unfolds like a forgotten film reel, moody, magnetic, and entirely transportive. Drawing inspiration from the golden age of 1960s Asian cinema, especially Wong Kar-wai’s In the Mood for Love, the space pairs velvet shadows and lacquered tables with oversized red lanterns glowing like stills frozen in time. Chef describes the menu as inspired by the nostalgic charm of Canadian-Chinese restaurants many grew up with, combining playful neon orange sauces, over-the-top décor, and even a fortune cookie or two. All delicious, fun, and a little tongue-in-cheek.
· Portland Room (2nd Floor):
A versatile and stylish event space, designed to host everything from private dinners and cocktail receptions to brand launches and special celebrations, all within a design-forward, King West aesthetic.
· Rodeo Dive (Main Floor, opening this fall):
Also designed by Nivek Remas, Rodeo Dive is a lively country sports bar that blends big-game energy with vintage Western accents and playful details. Warm, laid-back, and full of character, it’s designed to become the perfect gathering place for game days and casual nights out alike. There will also be a live component, with a small stage for performances and special events.
Together, these four layered concepts create Portland Square, a destination where bold design meets curated menus, and every floor tells a different story, offers a different flavour, and delivers a different experience, all united by the energy of King West. More than just a collection of restaurants, Portland Square is designed to spark fun, energy, and iconic nights out.
From cinematic interiors and playful, nostalgic menus to rooftop views and photo-worthy design moments, every detail invites guests to linger, celebrate, and experience King West in an entirely new way. Portland Square promises to become more than a place to dine; it’s set to be a new landmark for the neighbourhood and the city.
Portland Square opens Saturday, July 26th, 2025, at 600 King Street W, Toronto.
MUBI, the global distributor, streaming service and production company, has released the official trailer and artwork for Oliver Hermanus’ (Living, Moffie) latest feature film The History of Sound, in theaters from September 19, 2025.
Directed by Oliver Hermanus and written by Ben Shattuck (based on his short story), the film stars Paul Mescal (Gladiator, Aftersun, All of us Strangers), Josh O’Connor (The Crown, Challengers, La Chimera) and Chris Cooper (Adaptation, American Beauty, The Bourne Identity).
SYNOPSIS
Starring Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor, THE HISTORY OF SOUND is a sweeping, moving and tender romance that spans decades and continents. It tells the story of a love that can’t last, a life forever altered, and the ways in which music creates bonds between us that echo for a lifetime.
In 1917, Lionel (Mescal, Aftersun) – a young, talented music student – meets David (O’Connor, Challengers) at the Boston Conservatory, where a connection over a deep love of music leads to a fleeting love affair. They reconnect years later, leading to an impromptu journey through the backwoods of Maine to collect traditional folk songs. This unexpected reunion and the music they preserve will shape the course of Lionel’s life for decades to come.
Sumptuously realised by director Oliver Hermanus (Living) and based on a short story by Ben Shattuck, this is a beautiful and compelling cinematic experience that invites audiences to reflect on the power of music and love.
DIRECTOR STATEMENT
I’ve been living with this film, this story, for five years. This film has been a personal and defining journey; it has moved me to a new country, educated me about the power of music and song, it has conjured a re-evaluation of love and the bonds that last a lifetime.
The History of Sound is not simply the story of queer lives hidden due to a time of denial, of shame and secrecy. It is the story of a man’s life, expressed through the power of sound — as memory, as emotion… As family.
Our film is an offering of an idea, a very potent one – what if one’s first love, one’s great love, and one’s last love are all in one, and all too soon in one’s life…? What it is to live a life that is an echo? What does it sound like, in retrospect? And if offered a choice, would you change the course of your life’s path?
Made with a deep affection for cinema that does not shout or scream its intension, our film invites you to enjoy song and spirit, to celebrate life in all its wonder — its losses, its grief, its remembrance, and most of all, its undeniable and indelible mark – love.
THE HISTORY OF SOUND WILL BE IN THEATRES ACROSS CANADA FROM SEPTEMBER 19, 2025
MADE | NOUS is taking Canadians on a patriotic cross-country road trip this summer with broadcasting legend George Stroumboulopoulos. Revving up in Vancouver on July 25, 2025 and culminating in Toronto in September, George will journey across Canada with a film crew, visiting communities from coast to coast to coast and asking one question: What Canadian film and television MADE you?
This nationwide campaign celebrates the profound impact of the individuals and stories that have shaped Canadian culture and continue to inspire future generations of creative talent. It brings together everyday Canadians and national icons to reflect on the stories that have defined their identities, strengthened their communities and deepened their sense of belonging, both at home and abroad.
Filming will roll through Vancouver (BC), Edmonton and Calgary (AB), Montreal (QC), Saint John and Moncton (NB), Prince Edward Island, Nunavut and other communities along the way before concluding in Toronto (ON). Check out the video below to see George announce the road trip in his own words.
“I’m really excited to share that I’m hitting the road this summer, travelling across Canada with MADE | NOUS, and I’m pumped to be a part of their most ambitious campaign yet,” said George Stroumboulopoulos. “I have been lucky to meet so many of you Canadians over the years, and you’ve shared stories about how a Canadian television show or movie deeply affected you—whether it inspired you to live more authentically, to better understand your roots and this country’s history, or maybe even to pursue a career path. These are the kinds of stories that we’re searching for, the Canadian stories that MADE you.”
“From Jesus of Montreal and FUBAR to The Tragically Hip documentaries, Schitt’s Creek, Degrassi, or Heartland, every Canadian has that one film or series that left a mark. This road trip is about honouring those defining screen moments while exploring the themes that have long preoccupied us and the questions that still remain,” said Valerie Creighton, President and CEO, Canada Media Fund. “At a time when Canadians are more eager than ever to connect with our identity, this campaign has the power to ignite a national conversation, and we’re beyond thrilled to have George Stroumboulopoulos leading the charge on the ground.”
“Feature film has always been a powerful reflection of Canadian identity. It highlights our stories, our languages, and the richness of Canada’s cultural landscape,” said Julie Roy, Executive Director and CEO of Telefilm Canada. “We are proud to support a campaign that showcases our culture and invites audiences to reflect on how these stories help define who we are.”
Québécois comedian Rosalie Vaillancourt will kick off her own tour in her home province this August, before heading to the Maritimes to connect with French-Canadians and spotlight the unique French-language stories and people that reflect and shape francophone culture in Canada.
Since 2019, the MADE | NOUS initiative has put the spotlight on Canada’s world-class talent in film, TV, gaming, and digital entertainment, aiming to shift perceptions of Canadian content at home and abroad. CBC and ABC News Studios announced today LILITH FAIR: BUILDING A MYSTERY, a feature-length documentary from director Ally Pankiw (I Used to Be Funny, Black Mirror, The Great), will premiere in Canada on Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2025 on CBC and CBC Gem and on Sunday, Sept. 21, on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ for bundle subscribers in the U.S. and Disney+ internationally (excluding Canada), following its world premiere at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival. LILITH FAIR: BUILDING A MYSTERY tells the untold story of the groundbreaking music festival featuring only women artists, started by iconic Canadian singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan and her team in the late 1990s, in opposition to systematic industry barriers that limited women from playing together on a concert bill and getting back-to-back airplay on the radio. The film is produced with the support of the original Lilith Fair founders – Sarah McLachlan, Terry McBride, Dan Fraser and Marty Diamond.
“I’m so filled with pride and nostalgia watching this film,” said Sarah McLachlan. “Ally and the team have beautifully captured the magic and strength of a community of women who came together and lifted each other up to create positive change in the world. I hope the film resonates with everyone and we can continue to strive to support and champion one another.”
Photos are available here.
LILITH FAIR: BUILDING A MYSTERY is inspired by the 2019 article, “Building a Mystery: An Oral History of Lilith Fair,” from Vanity Fair and Epic Magazine, written by Jessica Hopper with Sasha Geffen and Jenn Pelly. It draws from more than 600 hours of never-before-seen archival footage as well as new interviews and stories from fans, festival organizers, and artists. The documentary reunites and features interviews from original Lilith Fair artists Bonnie Raitt, Sheryl Crow, Erykah Badu, Paula Cole, Jewel, Mýa, Natalie Merchant, Indigo Girls, and Emmylou Harris and a new generation of artists who have carried the torch including Brandi Carlile and Olivia Rodrigo, among others. As the film celebrates the festival’s groundbreaking legacy and impact, it also confronts the backlash that tried to diminish it and explores what Lilith means in today’s world.
“Lilith Fair holds a very special place in my heart,” said Dan Levy. “It was one of the first spaces where I remember feeling at home. The music, the sense of community, and the power of a group of women proving an entire industry wrong was a tremendous thing to experience. What Sarah built with that festival changed so much for so many people. And while it is now seen as an odds-defying success story, it was an uphill battle every step of the way. And there is a lot to be learned from that story. It’s an honor to be working alongside Sarah on this and I am excited for everyone to understand just how revolutionary Lilith Fair really was.”
“I am so proud to be a part of this beautiful doc – especially at what feels like a fitting time to highlight a story of resistance and radical joy in the face of systems that try to keep women and diverse voices small,” said director Ally Pankiw. “The collaborative effort of this film and what it took to make it mirrors the incredible underdog story of Sarah and her team and how they fought for Lilith to succeed against all odds.”
Commissioned by CBC with the participation of the Canada Media Fund and the Rogers Group of Funds, LILITH FAIR: BUILDING A MYSTERY is directed by Ally Pankiw and produced by Dan Levy’s Not A Real Production Company and Elevation Pictures for ABC News Studios and presented by White Horse Pictures in association with Epic Magazine. The film is produced by Levy and Christina Piovesan. Executive producers are Cassidy Hartmann, Nicholas Ferrall, Jeanne Elfant Festa, and Nigel Sinclair for White Horse; Noah Segal for Elevation Pictures; Jessica Hopper; Arthur Spector, Joshuah Bearman and Joshua Davis for Epic Magazine; Ally Pankiw; Steve Cohen and Paula Froehle for Chicago Media Project; and Wayne Isaak. For ABC News Studios, Diane Sawyer, Claire Weinraub and Tess Scott Davidson are executive producers; and David Sloan is senior executive producer. For CBC, Sally Catto is General Manager, Entertainment, Factual, & Sports; Jennifer Dettman is Executive Director, Unscripted Content; Sandra Kleinfeld is Senior Director, Documentary; and Michelle McCree is Executive in Charge of Production, CBC Docs.
Rachel McLean serves as supervising producer, and Isabel Merrell is co-executive producer. Ruti Prikhoji is Executive in Charge of Production for Elevation. The documentary is presented by Chicago Media Project and produced in association with Carlene C. Laughlin, Minderoo Pictures, the Elfant Festa Family and Sobey Road Entertainment. White Horse Pictures and Range Media Partners are acting as sales agents worldwide.
Lynne Stopkewich, Jessica Fraser and Dean English executive produce. The Manaaki Foundation, Barbara and Eric Dobkin, Malinda Wink, Christina Nolan and Rose Lizarraga will executive produce for Chicago Media Project; and Blue Skyzz Trust and Alexander Kellison will co-executive produce. For Sobey Road Entertainment, Andrew Trapani and Brian Nugent are executive producers, and David Sze and David Kirk are co-executive producers.
The film will launch the new season of CBC’s flagship documentary series THE PASSIONATE EYE.
In addition to the documentary premiere this fall, McLachlan will launch her first studio album of new music in over a decade, “Better Broken” (Concord Records), on Sept. 19. Produced by Tony Berg (Phoebe Bridgers, boygenius) and Will Maclellan (Lucy Dacus, Phoebe Bridgers), “Better Broken” is a soul-searching reflection on the fortitude that comes from weathering life’s constant storms. McLachlan will also be touring with her band across Canada this fall. For more information, visit sarahmclachlan.com.
Midnight Madness, presented by Intrepid Travel, returns to TIFF with its signature slate of wicked wonders that are sure to delight and disturb the Festival’s devoted and raucous late-night crowd. The section closes out each night of the Festival with 11:59pm screenings at the (possibly) haunted Royal Alexandra Theatre, where the nocturnal faithful gather to bear witness to the very best and most bizarre in contemporary genre and shock cinema. The 2025 edition features seven World Premieres and is bookended by two of the year’s most acclaimed midnight comedies courtesy of some seriously funny Canadians.
Midnight Madness opens with the Canadian Premiere of Matt Johnson’s Toronto-set Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie. Based on Johnson’s cult Viceland series, this hysterical, death-defying time-travel caper earned a standing ovation and a coveted Midnighter Audience Award at this past spring’s SXSW. Deeply steeped in late-aughts Toronto lore, its hometown screening is anticipated to levitate audiences into high orbit from the infectious laughter alone.
The closing film is Dead Lover, a zany, macabre horror-comedy from Canadian director Grace Glowicki. This madcap phantasmagoria has been celebrated in festival midnight sections around the world, and fittingly concludes its tour in Toronto as a welcome addition to the Midnight Madness canon.
The Festival’s wild side also features World Premieres of Normal, the latest shoot-’em-up from 2016 Midnight Madness People’s Choice Award recipient Ben Wheatley; Dust Bunny, the darkly whimsical directorial debut of prolific television showrunner Bryan Fuller (Hannibal, Pushing Daisies); and Kenji Tanigaki’s The Furious, a frenetic martial arts thriller that assembles some of the genre’s fiercest fighters (whose combined credits include The Raid, Chocolate, and Everything Everywhere All at Once). Midnight Madness devotees can expect these star-studded genre thrills to complement the lineup’s bold independent visions, including Curry Barker’s terrifying Obsession, Aleksandar Radivojević’s profane thriller Karmadonna, Takahide Hori’s imaginative stop-motion fantasia JUNK WORLD, and perhaps the two most berserk alt-comedies to ever play the section: Nick Corirossi and Armen Weitzman’s The Napa Boys and Todd Rohal’s Fuck My Son!
