#FIRSTLOOK: THE WEEKND TO PRESENT AT 2026 CRUNCHYROLL ANIME AWARDS

Crunchyroll has unveiled news that cannot wait until Friday to announce – global icon and long-time anime fan The Weeknd will appear at the landmark tenth iteration Crunchyroll Anime Awards taking place on Saturday, May 23, 2026 in Tokyo, Japan. The GRAMMY-winning artist known for weaving anime influences into his work will present the evening’s most prestigious honour: Anime of the Year.

Fans around the world can cast their votes daily for their favourite anime, helping decide winners across 32 categories—including the Anime of the Year recipient to be presented by The Weeknd. Voting is now open via the Anime Awards Official Website, Crunchyroll, and MyAnimeList, and runs through April 15 at 11:59 PM PT.

The Weeknd joins a growing lineup of celebrity anime-fan presenters shaped by anime’s influence on culture and creativity worldwide.

The Weeknd revealed that anime, especially famed director Shinichiro Watanabe’s influence, has been a key inspiration throughout his career, starting with his iconic first project, House of Balloons:

“When I was first introduced to anime, I was a child. Sailor Moon was one of my first crushes, Goku my first imaginary sparring partner, and “One More Time” by Daft Punk was a song and music video I couldn’t get out of my head.

But it wasn’t until my teenage years that one specific anime changed me forever and became part of the fabric of my early career: Samurai Champloo by Shinichiro Watanabe. It was the first time I experienced two of my favourite mediums—anime and hip hop—blending so seamlessly that it completely reshaped the way I watched film and listened to music.

The fusion of a samurai story told with auteur precision, paired with the sounds of Nujabes, Fat Jon, and Force of Nature was nothing short of transformative.

That influence stayed with me all the way through the creation of House of Balloons, where I wrote “The Morning,” “Glass Table Girls,” and “Loft Music” over Nujabes’ instrumentals. Without Watanabe and Nujabes, House of Balloons simply wouldn’t exist.

Samurai Champloo opened my eyes to a more mature world of anime and helped shape my visual DNA. The works of Satoshi Kon, Mamoru Oshii, and Katsuhiro Otomo became foundational to the look and feel of The Weeknd.

So it’s safe to say I wouldn’t be here without anime. It’s an honour to celebrate the artists behind it and a medium that continues to inspire the world.”

This year’s Crunchyroll Anime Awards will host a suite of musical tributes to anime. Japanese singer DEAN FUJIOKA will open the ceremony with “History Maker,” from Yuri!!! on ICE—the very first Crunchyroll Anime Awards’ Anime of the Year recipient. Iconic rock band PORNOGRAFFITTI will perform a tribute marking the 10th anniversary of the My Hero Academia anime and the show’s conclusion. Legendary rock band ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION will perform their beloved hit “Haruka Kanata”—the second opening theme for the seminal shounen series NARUTO. Previously announced performances also include a Neon Genesis Evangelion 30th anniversary tribute by Yoko Takahashi and melodic movements by the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra to accent the show.

Toei Animation and Crunchyroll today announced the return of the ONE PIECE Simulcast on Crunchyroll this spring with the start of the Elbaph Arc, continuing the global anime phenomenon with an all-new chapter in the Straw Hats’ journey. Crunchyroll also confirmed a March 2026 release window for the final English dub batch from the Egghead Arc, bringing the complete Egghead Arc to Crunchyroll in English dub.

#FIRSTLOOK: CRUNCHYROLL ANIME AWARDS 2026 RETURNS TO TOKYO

After a breakout year for anime across streaming and on the big screen, Crunchyroll announced the 2026 Crunchyroll Anime Awards will return to Tokyo, Japan on May 23, 2026. The marquis tenth celebration will be punctuated by a global pre-show, a star-studded orange carpet, and once-in-a-lifetime performances, all in support of honouring nominees across 32 anime categories.

Popular voice actress and performer Sally Amaki and renowned entertainer Jon Kabira will return as co-hosts for the fourth straight year.

Crunchyroll also revealed a preliminary music lineup for the 2026 Crunchyroll Anime Awards. Japanese singer Yoko Takahashi will perform a 30th anniversary tribute to 1995’s seminal anime Neon Genesis Evangelion featuring the renowned theme “A Cruel Angel’s Thesis.” Symphonic suites conducted by Hirofumi Kurita, performed by the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, and arranged by Kazunori Miyake will accent the ceremony. The 9th annual Anime Awards was again hosted by renowned voice actress Sally Amaki and popular entertainer Jon Kabira, who returned for their third year in a row to celebrate anime’s biggest night. The winners were revealed by a global slate of celebrity anime fan presenters including GRAMMYⓇ award winning singer Kacey Musgraves; Canadian director, musician, and actor Finn Wolfhard and American actor Gaten Matarazzo, both from the hit series Stranger Things; global superstar and anime collaborator J Balvin; Italian singer-songwriter Damiano David; Musician and actor Rina Sawayama; Award winning Brazilian pop icon Pabllo Vittar; American snowboarder Chloe Kim; screenwriter Zak Penn; the comedy duo made up of Shohei Osada and Shun Matsuo Chocolate Planet; Japanese actor, musician and talent Dean Fujioka; the Japanese actor known for live-action adaptations of anime, Kanata Hongo; Japanese Academy Award winning actress Mayu Matsuoka; and Japanese model and talent Saya Ichikawa.

The Anime Awards pre-show, which was broadcast live from the Grand Prince Hotel Shin Takanawa, was co-hosted by Crunchyroll hosts Lauren Moore and Tim Lyu and featured top global drag star Plastique Tiara; English professional boxer Ben Whittaker; American recording artist d4vd; American-Chilean singer Paloma Mami; Demon Queen VTuber Ironmouse; and Pioneering YouTube content creator Gigguk.

During the awards show, global fans enjoyed electrifying performances from Creepy Nuts, the 2025 Anime Award-winning hip-hop duo, who performed “Bling-Bang-Bang-Born”, the opening theme from Mashle: Magic and Muscles; legendary rock band FLOW performed “DAYS” to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Eureka Seven; and LiSA, Spotify’s most streamed Japanese artist overseas in 2020, performed three songs “crossing field,” “Datte Atashino Hero,” and “gurenge,” the smash hit from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. Fans can also catch a special Video on Demand performance from Creepy Nuts of the viral hit song “Otonoke,” the opening theme for Anime of the Year nominee Dan Da Dan.

During the ceremony, Attack on Titan was awarded the Anime Awards’ first Global Impact Award, which celebrates visionary creators and groundbreaking works that have left an indelible mark on culture, history, and the hearts of audiences around the world. The final film Attack on Titan: THE LAST ATTACK premiered in late 2024, marking the end of the longstanding, iconic anime. Yuichiro Hayashi from MAPPA accepted the award on behalf of all the creatives who brought the series to life over the years.

The Crunchyroll Anime Awards is the yearly awards program celebrating anime’s creative community. This year, a record 51 million votes were cast by fans worldwide to celebrate their favorite series, films, and actors. Some of the most engaged countries, in alphabetical order, were Brazil, Canada, Chile, France, Germany, India, Mexico, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States with both Canada and Chile being first time additions into the top 10. The 2025 Anime Awards will be available to stream as video-on-demand, shortly on Crunchyroll’s YouTube and Twitch Channels, along with SONY PICTURES CORE and the Sony Group Corp Japan and Global YouTube Channels. .

Solo Leveling, which was the top series streaming on Crunchyroll in 2024 will be back, alongside sci-fi monster series Kaiju No. 8, the wonderfully adorable series featuring kittens living in bananas, Bananya, and supernatural comedy Toilet-bound Hanako-kun. Throughout May, UNIQLO will be distributing Crunchyroll codes to customers, with eligible online UT purchases, that can be redeemed for a 30-day free trial of Crunchyroll*. UNIQLO has also partnered with Manga artist Remi Yamamoto to create UTme! Collection designs, available exclusively at their NYC flagship locations – UNIQLO Soho and UNIQLO 5th Avenue. In celebration of a new JUJUTSU KAISEN x Funko Pop collection, Funko Pop will be hosting an autograph signing with the English voice cast of JUJUTSU KAISEN on May 3rd. #FIRSTLOOK: CRUNCHYROLL ANNOUNCE NEW ANIME SERIES ADAPTED FROM “GHOST OF TSUSHIMA”

Crunchyroll, the global anime brand, together with Aniplex, Sony Music, and PlayStation Productions, today announced a new anime series adapted from Sucker Punch Productions’ award-winning “Ghost of Tsushima” video game and its “Legends” cooperative multiplayer experience inspired by Japanese folktales and mythology.

The Ghost of Tsushima anime will be produced in collaboration with Aniplex, the studio behind globally celebrated series such as Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Solo Leveling, and Sword Art Online. The adaptation will be helmed by Director Takanobu Mizuno, with Gen Urobuchi (NITRO PLUS) for Story Composition and animation by KAMIKAZE DOUGA. Together, the team will bring Ghost of Tsushima: Legends’ traditional samurai aesthetics to life with cinematic storytelling and striking visuals. Sony Music will serve as the strategic music and soundtrack partner for the series.
