Film Synopsis

Abby Govindan is a stand-up comedian and writer based in New York City. She got her start in comedy at the age of 20, making her comedic debut at Caroline’s on Broadway in New York City in December of 2017. Since starting comedy, Abby has performed at venues all over the world and, in 2019, toured as a headliner for several colleges across the nation while being a college student herself. She’s opened for coveted comedians such as Russell Peters, Daniel Sloss, and Hasan Minhaj. A stand up show and solo act in one, “How to Embarrass Your Immigrant Parents” is a biting and irreverent storytelling experience that explores a pertinent universal theme: wanting to understand your parents but struggling to see eye-to-eye. Throughout the course of an hour, Abby takes the viewer on an intimate, hilarious, soul-bearing journey about her struggles with mental health, fitting in, and finding common ground with the ones you love even after they’ve hurt you. Her one-woman-show Cheat, about her history of serially cheating in relationships, led The New York Times’ recommendations for the 2024 New York Comedy Festival and had sold out runs in LA, NYC, and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The show was featured in Deadline’s Comics to Watch, and Chloe is currently imagining Cheat for other mediums. After beginning his career in his home country of Ireland, Colum Tyrrell moved to New York City and quickly became one of the fastest rising comics in the scene. Dyon “Mojo” Brooks is an actor, writer, producer, and stand-up comedian that recently appeared in a leading role for Tyler Perry’s She The People on Netflix. As a comic, Brooks is nationally acclaimed and celebrated having toured with legends such as Mike Epps, Martin Lawrence, and Deon Cole to name a few. He recently wrapped his headlining nationwide Unhand Me Now Tour which sold out every single night with multiple added shows in nearly every location. This fall, Brooks will set out on his fourth headlining tour with stops at multiple different theatres across the nation. Additionally, Dyon can be seen on the most recent Season 21 of Nick Cannon’s Wild ‘n Out, having been hand selected by Cannon who is a fan of Brooks viral sketch comedy videos that can be found across his social media pages, which have amassed millions of views and over 28 million likes.

Born and raised in rural Ohio, Patti Harrison began her career in the NYC comedy scene. After her first film role in 2017’s A SIMPLE FAVOR, she’s made fans for her sociopathic character “Ruthie” on Hulu’s Shrill and various appearances on I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson, Poker Face, High Maintenance, Search Party, and The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon. She’s written on multiple series including two seasons of Big Mouth on Netflix, and has even voiced the role of “Tail Chief” in Disney’s ensemble Raya And The Last Dragon.

Sabrina Wu is a New York based actor, writer, and stand-up comedian. They made their feature film debut in the Lionsgate comedy Joy Ride, from executive producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg and director Adele Lim. They’ve also guest starred in Abbott Elementary, and a series regular in the Apple TV+ show Murderbot starring Alexander Skarsgard. Wu was a writer on the critically-acclaimed FX limited series Dying For Sex starring Michelle Williams and Jenny Slate. On the stand-up side, they were selected as one of the New Faces of Comedy by the Just For Laughs Festival in 2022. Later that fall, they had their TV debut doing stand up on the Tonight Show. Paramount+ today announced that following a highly successful limited theatrical run, the ambitious and unconventional new Eminem-produced documentary, STANS, directed by Emmy-winning director Steven Leckart, will exclusively debut on the service in Canada, the U.S., Latin America and Brazil on Tuesday, August 26. The film will then premiere on Wednesday, August 27, 2025 in the U.K., Australia, Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland and Austria, followed by Japan on October 3, 2025.

Released in 2000, Eminem’s song “Stan,” about an obsessive, unstable fan, remains iconic. So iconic that the term stan was officially added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2017. The song and its storyline serve as a guiding light for this unconventional and fully authorized feature, which follows a cast of real-life stans whose deep personal connections to Eminem mirror some of the many themes found throughout his lyrics.

“’Stan’ is one of the most unconventional songs ever written, where the story is mostly told from a fan’s perspective, so this film was an incredible opportunity to find a unique approach,” said director Steven Leckart. “We kept coming back to one lyric from the song: ‘I’m just like you.’ Fans who echo that same sentiment carry much of the film. But like the song, Marshall’s perspective was also essential to the movie. I’m grateful for just how candid, sincere and frequently hilarious he was.”

More than just an exploration of fandom, STANS examines the complicated relationship between one of the world’s most private artists and his massive public persona. Through stylized recreations, rare archival footage and intimate original interviews, it offers a raw, loud and revealing journey across Eminem’s career and the passionate audience that has grown with him.

Following its critically acclaimed opening at the inaugural SXSW London earlier this year, Shady Films hosted the documentary’s fan-filled NYC Premiere Event at The Rooftop at Pier 17 in the Seaport on August 6, which included a surprise appearance from Eminem, ahead of the film’s global launch in theatres and limited weekend run exclusively at AMC Theatres in the U.S. from August 7-10.

A distinguished filmmaker and editor, Michèle Hozer has been a staple in the Canadian film industry since 1987. With two films gracing the Oscar shortlist, an Emmy nomination, and multiple Gemini and Canadian Screen Awards, her remarkable career has been punctuated by acclaim from prestigious film festivals worldwide.

Her editing on Shake Hands with the Devil: The Journey of Roméo Dallaire contributed to the film’s 2007 Emmy Award for Best Documentary and the Audience Award at Sundance. She received an individual Emmy nomination for Promise to the Dead: The Exile Journey of Ariel Dorfman. As co-director of Genius Within: The Inner Life of Glenn Gould, she was shortlisted for an Academy Award and received a Gemini Award for Best Biography. Her solo directorial debut, Sugar Coated (2015), premiered at Hot Docs and won the Donald Brittain Award at the Canadian Screen Awards.

Michèle has also directed SponsorLand (2017), contributed to Frontline’s In the Age of AI, and served as story editor on Buffy Sainte-Marie: Carry It On. In 2024, she completed Atomic Reaction, a feature documentary nominated for a Canadian Screen Award.

The Canadian Film Centre (CFC) and Canadian Society of Cinematographers (CSC) are pleased to announce the five participants joining the 2025 Cinematography Intensive, a comprehensive two-week training opportunity for female-identifying DOPs in collaboration with the Norman Jewison Film Program. With continued support by the Paul Bronfman Family Foundation, this groundbreaking intensive honours the late Paul Bronfman’s legacy by helping cinematographers elevate their craft, strengthen their storytelling, teamwork and technical skills, and expand their professional network. The five talented artists from across Canada arrived at the CFC for the Cinematography Intensive on August 11, 2025. See here for more information.

As part of the Intensive, the Directors of Photography (DOP) will take part in a series of workshops and mentorship sessions led by CSC cinematographers Arthur Cooper and Zoe Dirse. They will also have the opportunity to collaborate with CFC directors, producers and editors working across multiple productions, while continuing to refine their craft and develop their distinctive visual approach. Following the Intensive in the final week of August, participants and their mentors will take part in a virtual group screening to share their work and reflect on the process. The DOPs will leave the program with new skills, connections and high-quality, original material to include in their reels to enhance their portfolio of work.

Alexis Moar (Calgary, AB) is an Alberta-based cinematographer and camera operator with over a decade of experience in the film industry. She studied Film and Video Production at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) and since then her work has spanned narrative, documentary, and experimental projects. Alexis continually works to grow as an artist by drawing inspiration from the people she surrounds herself with, the natural world around her, and evocative surrealist imagery. A dedicated member of the film community, she has mentored emerging female filmmakers through programs like Herland and remains committed to lifting up others in their creative journeys. Her work is driven by curiosity, discovery, and a desire to create with sensitivity and depth.

Belen Garcia (Vancouver, BC) is a Mexican cinematographer living and working in Vancouver, Canada. With a background in animation, photography, and design, she brings a unique visual sensibility to her work. In 2018, she received a full scholarship to attend the VFS Film Production Program and has since built a career in both the independent and commercial space. Belen is a hands-on DP who loves being on set, with a particular passion for lighting. She’s committed to fostering positive, safe environments on set and is a proud member of Apertura, a Mexican collective of women cinematographers. She was selected for the 2022–2023 ASC Vision Mentorship Program, where she was mentored by Oliver Bokelberg ASC, and is currently an Associate Member of the Canadian Society of Cinematographers.

Kadri Koop (Pemberton, BC) is an Estonian cinematographer, residing in Canada, constantly hopping between North America and Europe. She spent her early 20s exploring, studying, and working across Europe and Asia before landing in the U.S. on a scholarship to study documentary film at Stanford. After a stint working in the field, Kadri found her true passion in cinematography and dove headfirst into the American Film Institute, honing her skills in narrative storytelling. Since then, she’s been shooting both short and long-form narrative and documentary projects with her unique visual style that bridges naturalism with heightened realism. Her work hasn’t gone unnoticed—Kadri has been nominated for the ASC Heritage Award and the Student Emmy’s. Most recently, she snagged the 2024 Angénieux Special Encouragement Award at the Cannes Film Festival, sharing the honor with legendary Indian cinematographer Santosh Sivan ASC ISC.

Nadzeya Mikhalchenkava (Toronto, ON) is a Belarusian-born cinematographer based in Toronto whose work has been showcased at the Women Film Festival, Sunderland Film Festival, Paris Film Awards, and numerous festivals across France, England, and Canada. In 2024, she received Best Cinematography at the IBDFF for the short film Vanamaaly. Awarded a scholarship to study film in Paris, Nadzeya began developing her distinctive visual style, influenced by Tarkovsky, Bergman, and Herzog. She later earned a Master’s in Film and TV from the University of Sunderland, refining her expertise in camera operation, lighting, directing, editing, and color grading. At the conclusion of her Master’s, her thesis film—which she directed—won the Best Overall Post-Graduate Project (Film) award. A professional musician and dancer, she incorporates rhythm, movement, and musicality into her cinematography, using these sensibilities to shape pacing, framing, and camera choreography. This fusion of disciplines lends her work both visual impact and a sense of harmonic composition. Having lived and worked in Belarus, France, China, Cambodia, England, and now Canada, Nadzeya brings a multicultural perspective and a sensitivity to diverse cultural contexts, creating visually expressive, emotionally resonant imagery that connects across borders and artistic forms.

Talia Woodland (Whitehorse, Yukon / Toronto, ON) is an ex-dancer turned filmmaker currently based in Toronto. After being raised far from the film industry in Whitehorse, Yukon, she has built a busy camera career with a passion for environmental and social justice projects. Talia is passionate about supporting other women identifying and nonbinary folks to join and succeed in the field of cinematography. As a Steadicam Operators Association Certified Steadicam Operator/owner, Talia has a growing list of Steadicam/camera operating credits on a range of projects. Her years on set as an AC and operator have led her to the role of cinematographer, a new journey she is excited to take. Some of her recent cinematography work includes a climate comedy series: THE BIG OIL ALLIANCE, winner of Best Cinematography (Comedic) at New Jersey Web Fest. Talia graduated from Humber College’s Film and Television Production Advanced Diploma program, with a focus in Cinematography, and Directing/Producing. She is the recipient of Humber’s 2019 Women in Film Award/Scholarship for achievement of overall excellence in the program. Her thesis short documentary film ALL IT GIVES, has screened at 18 global film festivals and has won 3 awards.
