Esteemed journalist Ivy Knight and director JR Reid, whose short film Skyline Diner premiered at North America’s largest documentary festival, Hot Docs, are once again teaming up for OPEN—a new documentary series capturing a never before seen look at some of Toronto’s finest restaurants. The series follows chefs and restaurateurs as they prepare to open for daily service, providing audiences with a behind the scenes look that is rarely showcased. Narrated by notable journalist and celebrated food writer James Chatto, and shot entirely on film, this series is unlike anything that’s come before it.
The first episode of OPEN, featuring the Michelin-starred Edulis, will premiere at the series launch on November 18th at The Bell & The Beacon, with a bonus screening of Skyline included. Taste Toronto, a proud supporter of Toronto’s diverse restaurant culture, will co-host as the media sponsor for this exciting new series.
Ivy Knight, an acclaimed journalist who has interviewed everyone from Anthony Bourdain to Matty Matheson, brings her industry insight and passion for storytelling to OPEN. A former line cook turned writer and documentary filmmaker, Knight has dedicated her career to illuminating the hidden layers of restaurant culture. Much like the hit TV show The Bear, OPEN dives into the sometimes unglamorous, everyday rituals of the restaurant world, showing audiences the realities of life behind the kitchen doors. “Conceived by JR, we’re making this series as a continuation of our short documentary about the Skyline Diner that premiered at Hot Docs last year. We love restaurants and we want to showcase the parts of that culture that are often unseen,” Knight explains.
The Toronto establishments featured in this first season of the series are General Public, Edulis, Linny’s and Afrobeats. Each location contributes its own unique story, woven together to form a heartfelt celebration of Toronto’s restaurant scene.
Shot entirely on film, OPEN uses a nostalgic blend of Super 8, Polaroid, point-and-shoot, and vintage 35mm cameras to evoke a timeless, vintage aesthetic. With Knight acting as producer and writer, and JR in his role as director and editor, they assembled an all-volunteer crew to create the series. Known for his music videos with Gentleman Reg, Dearly Beloved and others, Reid sees OPEN as a counterpoint to endless scrolling on our social media feeds. “In a world of unlimited and cheap disposable content, we wanted to create something lasting and beautiful,” he explains.
Special thanks to Taste Toronto, Motioneer, Valley of Mother of God Gin, and The Bell & The Beacon for their generous support. And to our sponsors Carve Real Estate and San Pellegrino.

The highly anticipated CBC docu-comedy short film 15 Ways My Dad Almost Died, directed by award-winning filmmaker Sura Mallouh and written by Filipina Dora-nominated comedian Alia Rasul, is set to premiere at the 2024 Reel Asian Film Festival on November 16th at 12:00 PM at the TIFF Lightbox (350 King St W) in Toronto. This heartfelt, humorous and important story will be available to a wide audience beginning December 10 on the free CBC Gem streaming service in Canada, and on the CBC Docs YouTube channel internationally.
15 Ways My Dad Almost Died chronicles Filipina-Canadian comedian Alia Rasul connecting with her father, Amroussi, as she tries to mine his ridiculous number of near-death experiences for comedic material. What begins as lighthearted storytelling transforms into a deeper exploration of forgotten history and the power of oration. Alia uncovers her father’s harrowing experiences during the siege of Jolo in 1974, a tragic event in the southern Philippines that resulted in immense loss of life and destruction. The siege led to widespread civilian casualties and the destruction of homes and livelihoods. A media blackout at the time kept much of the world from learning the full extent of the atrocities. This year marks 50 years since Jolo was razed to the ground, and to this day, has not been restored and is rarely talked about.
For Alia’s father, who lived through the devastation, the event became a painful chapter in his life, better left forgotten. Through their conversations, Alia learns not only of the physical danger her father faced—like nearly stepping on a landmine—but also of the grief of having to flee from a beloved hometown, never to return. It dawns on Alia that had she never asked her father for his stories, they would have been lost. This revelation leads Alia to confront her own responsibilities as a storyteller in the context of a world that would rather forget, than be held accountable.
“This film is a love letter to my dad and his hometown of Jolo. In making this, my father and I found our own unique way to keep oral tradition alive,” said Dora-nominated comedian and Tita Collective member, Alia Rasul. “The process of making this film and the conversations involved, shaped who I am now as an artist, it gave me clarity on the kind of stories I want to tell and how I want to tell them. I hope it inspires others to be curious and to ask their loved ones about their stories, I hope it inspires people to look up the Jolo Siege of 1974.”
“15 Ways weaves an endearing father-daughter bonding experience while simultaneously unraveling family dynamics, lost history, and the importance of oral preservation.” said award-winning director Sura Mallouh. “This film is a time capsule honoring Amroussi’s memories. If 15 Ways also allows other communities to feel seen or helps them engage with their personal stories, then I am honored to play a small part in carrying the tradition of oration on. It has been 50 years since the Jolo siege. I hope this film pushes back on the Jolo siege’s erasure and allows for more discourse around preserving family history.”
15 Ways My Dad Almost Died blends verité footage, straight-to-camera stand-up, and animation to tell a unique, heartwarming, and often funny story about survival, family, and the importance of remembering the past. The film serves as both a personal memoir and a universal story about the enduring bonds of family and the legacies we inherit.
The CBC Docs film is directed by Sura Mallouh, written by Alia Ceniza Rasul, produced by Sura Mallouh, Alia Ceniza Rasul, Craig Scorgie, Sahar El-Kadri and executive produced by Jason Loftus.

Netflix has renewed the fan-favorite drama Outer Banks for a fifth and final season, ahead of its Season 4 Part 2 premiere on November 7.
Writing for the final season is currently underway. Season 5 details and additional information will be shared at a later time.
Outer Banks: Season 4 – Part 1 debuted at #1 in the global top 10 English TV following its release on October 10 and has remained in the top ten for three weeks, reaching the top 10 in 74 countries, leading up to the release of Part 2 on November 7. Across all four seasons, Outer Banks has spent a total of 27 weeks in the global Top 10 English TV List.
In a message to the fans on the final season renewal, co-creators & executive producers Jonas Pate, Josh Pate, and Shannon Burke said:
“Dispatch to all Pogues:
Seven years ago, in the summer of 2017, we came across a photo of teenagers on a beach at dusk during a power outage. That photo sparked an idea for a story of four best friends who only want to have a good time all the time. From this beginning, we imagined a mystery that would lead to a five-season journey of adventure, treasure hunting, and friendship.
At the time, seven years ago, it seemed impossible that we would really get to tell the whole five season story, but here we are, at the end of our fourth season, still chopping away.
The fourth season was our longest and hardest – but most rewarding – to produce. The season ends with a feature length episode, which we think is our best, most powerful episode. We hope you feel the same way.
Now, with a little sadness, but also excitement, we’re putting Season Four behind us, and are turning to Season Five, in which we hope to bring our beloved Pogues home in the way we imagined and planned years ago. Season Five will be our last season, and we think it will be our best yet. We hope you’ll join us for one more paddle out to the surf break.
P4L,
Josh, Jonas, and Shannon”
On Saturday, November 2, Netflix hosted Poguelandia: An Outer Banks Experience for 2,500 fans at The Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, CA. The fan event featured performances by Jungle, GloRilla, Remi Wolf and Chase B as well as Outer Banks-themed photo opps, concessions and merch.
Leading up to Poguelandia, the cast took part in a multi-country Pogue tour that spanned Salvador, Brazil; Toronto, Canada; Chicago; Houston; Miami; and Seattle.
Additionally, on the gaming front, Netflix just released Netflix Stories: Outer Banks, an all-new interactive mobile game. When you learn your estranged father has gone missing, you buy a one-way ticket to the Outer Banks to find the half-brother you’ve never met. About OUTER BANKS Season 4
Following last season’s 18-month flash-forward showing Wes Genrette’s proposal for the Pogues to find Blackbeard’s treasure, Season 4 takes us back in time to the lead-up of that moment. After finding the gold at El Dorado, the Pogues return to the OBX and commit to having a “normal” life. They’ve built themselves a new safe haven, officially dubbed “Poguelandia 2.0”, where they live together and run a fairly successful bait, tackle, and charter tour shop. But after some financial setbacks, John B, Sarah, Kiara, JJ, Pope, and Cleo take Wes up on his offer, drawn back into the “G” game for a whole new adventure. But before they know it, they’re well in over their heads, with dangerous new enemies hot on their heels racing them to the treasure. Meanwhile, their problems are only growing, and they’re forced to question their past, present, and future – who they really are, has it all been worth it, and how much are they willing to risk?
