The entries were selected from more than 1,300 submissions received from across Canada. The public can read the shortlisted entries on cbcbooks.ca. The winner of this year’s prize will be announced on Thursday, September 25.
The 2025 CBC Nonfiction Prize jurors are Zoe Whittall, Danny Ramadan and Helen Knott.
Zoe Whittall is an Ontario-based author, poet and screenwriter. She has received the Writers’ Trust Dayne Ogilvie Award and has been shortlisted for the Giller Prize. Her memoir No Credit River was published in 2024. Danny Ramadan is a Vancouver-based Syrian-Canadian author and advocate for 2SLGBTQ+ refugees. Ramadan’s latest memoir Crooked Teeth was a finalist in the nonfiction category of the 2024 Governor General’s Literary Awards. Helen Knott is a Dane Zaa, Cree, Métis and mixed settler-descent writer from Prophet River First Nations in B.C. Knott’s memoir Becoming a Matriarch was a finalist in the nonfiction category of the 2024 Governor General’s Literary Awards.
The Grand Prize winner will receive a cash prize of $6,000 from the Canada Council for the Arts, a two-week writing residency at Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity and will be published on the CBC Books website. The four other finalists will each receive $1,000 from the Canada Council for the Arts and will be published on CBC Books.

Today, Prime Video announced that the global hit series The Summer I Turned Pretty is set to conclude its story with a feature film installation written and directed by Jenny Han. While story details are still under wraps, the surprise news was announced this evening at the series’ finale red carpet celebration in Paris, France.

Paramount+ today announced that OZZY: NO ESCAPE FROM NOW, the definitive account of the rock icon’s life during the last six years, will exclusively premiere on the service on Tuesday, October 7, 2025 in Canada and internationally, excluding Japan.
Directed by BAFTA-award winner Tania Alexander, the feature-length documentary has been produced in collaboration with the Osbourne family. Alongside Ozzy and Sharon, children Aimee, Kelly and Jack Osbourne speak candidly about the late-night fall their father suffered in February 2019 and the subsequent life-changing impact of that accident, which ultimately led to him cancelling his two-and-a-half-year farewell tour.
“He was in hospital for weeks. To fall like that and not be able to bounce back like he had in the past, and then having to cancel the tour – that was his biggest heart-break,” says Aimee Osbourne in the film.
Detailing his numerous corrective surgeries, escalating health issues and the progressive effects of his Parkinson’s diagnosis, OZZY: NO ESCAPE FROM NOW delivers a brave, unvarnished and relatable portrait of a man, highlighting how Ozzy’s ongoing chronic pain impacted his mental health and informed the music he made during this period.
“At that time, the depression was so bad. [He’d] be like what’s the point in even getting up? I’m not getting up. I’m not working with the physiotherapist. What’s the point?” adds Sharon Osbourne.
The singer reveals how Take What You Want, his collaboration with Post Malone – instigated by Kelly and producer Andrew Watt and released in October 2019 – kick-started a new musical phase in his storied career.
“It got me out of the blues. It helped me. That was the best medicine I ever had at that point,” comments Ozzy in the film, recalling the recording of the track.
Fans are also treated to the inside story of the two albums that followed – 2020’s acclaimed Ordinary Man and 2022’s double Grammy-winning Patient Number 9 – both of which contain some of the singer’s most reflective work.
“I do think that Ordinary Man is less an Ozzy Osbourne album and more a John Osbourne album,” says Jack Osbourne of the first of those albums. “There’s a lot of themes in it [where he is] processing his own life and mortality and what he’s facing.”
“I took dad to the studio every single day,” says Kelly, recalling the recording sessions. “He would go into the studio in the basement of Andrew’s house and get comfortable in this chair that Andrew bought him and it was like the magic would begin.”
Capturing Ozzy at home and in the studio, OZZY: NO ESCAPE FROM NOW also documents his heroic, last-minute decision to play the Closing Ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in the UK in the summer of 2022 and his preparations for that performance; an exclusive soundcheck performance from his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in October 2024; and his journey to play the Back To The Beginning show at Villa Park in his hometown of Birmingham on July 5, 2025.
OZZY: NO ESCAPE FROM NOW was never intended as a posthumous film. However, following his death on July 22, 2025, the documentary now stands as a testament to Ozzy’s courage, wit, determination, and talent – qualities that ensure he remains a hero to millions around the world.
Alongside the Osbourne family, OZZY: NO ESCAPE FROM NOW also features contributions from band mates and friends that include Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath), Duff McKagan and Slash (Guns N’ Roses), Robert Trujillo and James Hetfield (Metallica), Billy Idol, Maynard James Keenan (Tool), Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Ozzy’s longstanding guitarist Zakk Wylde, producer Andrew Watt, Billy Morrison, Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine), Mike Inez (Alice In Chains) and Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins), all of whom provide intimate, heartfelt perspectives on the man himself.
