Following a standout debut performance at the 68th annual GRAMMY® Awards on Sunday, SOMBR shares a brand new single, titled “Homewrecker” (Warner Records), his first release since his critically acclaimed, chart-topping 2025 debut album I Barely Know Her. Directed by Gus Black (Phoebe Bridgers, Laufey), the “Homewrecker” music video brings the song’s relatably messy feelings to life. In the visual, SOMBR and Blackwell, cast in a Western film helmed by a short-tempered director played by Manheim, we see tensions rise and the lines between pretend and real life blurred — leading to a high-noon-style western showdown.

Once again, SOMBR is the sole writer and co-producer of his latest song, underscoring the weight of this talent. In addition to his Best New Artist GRAMMY® nomination, he’s currently up for two prestigious BRIT Awards: International Artist of the Year, and International Song of the Year for “undressed.” Meanwhile, “back to friends” has claimed the #1 spot at Top 40 Radio. 

In November, SOMBR made his Saturday Night Live debut, where he played “12 to 12” and “back to friends.” That appearance landed between sold-out tours across North America — with most venues being upgraded — and Australia/New Zealand. I Barely Know Her was written entirely by SOMBR and co-produced by him alongside the legendary Tony Berg (Phoebe Bridgers, The Replacements). A New York City native raised on the Lower East Side, he started making songs in his bedroom while studying classical music at LaGuardia High School. His 2022 song “Caroline” took the internet by storm, and he’s since released a series of EPs and singles, climbing to over 400 million monthly streams across platforms. Today, Disney+ debuted the official trailer for FX’s “Love Story: John F. Earlier this evening, as part of TIFF’s opening ceremony for the 25th annual Canada’s Top Ten, Henri Pardo was announced as this year’s recipient of the Charles Officer Legacy Award, presented by TIFF and CBC. This award, now in its second year, recognizes a Canadian Black director and/or writer whose body of work exemplifies the late award-winning filmmaker’s creative excellence, strong point of view, and community-mindedness. Pardo is a Montreal-based filmmaker whose debut film Kanaval premiered at TIFF ’23 in the Centrepiece programme.

“Charles Officer understood that making films is not enough — we must also build the infrastructure for the next generation,” said Pardo. “This award is a commitment to continue that work: making the films, opening the doors, and staying present for those coming after us.”

The jury stated: “Henri Pardo’s films combine craft, cultural specificity, and emotional depth while remaining visually striking and rooted in authenticity. Blending Haitian cultural narratives with contemporary techniques and magical realism, his work is perfectly balanced by his role as a mentor and leader, amplifying marginalized voices and reshaping the Canadian film industry into a more inclusive and equitable place. A founding member of both Black Wealth Media and Black on Black Films, his work is just as impactful on screen as it is to the many he holds up with his mentorship, guidance, and high professional standards. It is for these reasons and more that we are proud to award Henri Pardo the Charles Officer Legacy Award.”

This year’s jury members were CBC’s Lea Marin; CFC’s Kathryn Emslie; TIFF’s Jane Kim; and filmmaker Miryam Charles, the inaugural recipient of the Charles Officer Legacy Award.

Henri Pardo will receive $25,000 CAD, a TIFF Industry Membership for one year, and a pass to TIFF: The Market in September 2026.

About Henri Pardo

Henri Pardo is a Montreal-based filmmaker whose work centres Afro-Canadian and Haitian diasporic experiences through documentary and narrative fiction. His feature debut Kanaval (2023) premiered at TIFF, winning the Amplify Voices Award for Best BIPOC Canadian Feature and selection to Canada’s Top Ten. His documentary Dear Jackie (2021) won the Magnus Isacsson Award at RIDM and earned a Canadian Screen Award nomination.

Born in New Brunswick to Haitian parents who fled the Duvalier regime, Pardo works across English, French, and Haitian Creole. His documentary series Afro-Canada (2022) traces 400 years of Black presence in Canada. Beyond his own films, Pardo builds infrastructure for Afrocentric cinema. He founded Black Wealth Media (2016) and the non-profit Encre Noire/Black Ink (2024), which trains emerging Afro-descendant filmmakers while archiving and developing ancestral narrative structures. He is a founding member of Black on Black Films.

Cult favourite Mockumentary Sitcom Television Series NIRVANNA THE BAND THE SHOW amassed a huge following when its two seasons aired on Viceland between 2017 and 2018. While fans never got its third season, the answer to the void is NIRVANNA THE BAND THE SHOW THE MOVIE. Right out the gate, it won huge raves premiering at SXSW ’25 and eventually it took prestigious the People’s Choice Midnight Madness Award at tiff50 this past September.

The Comedy-Adventure sees buddies Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol, reprising fictional versions of themselves, trying to get a gig at Queen Street’s Rivoli, but things go to the wayside when they accidentally get transported back in time to 2008 Toronto, their friendships tested to the limits in the most crazy death-defying situations, and fates possibly altered forever as they try to get back to today.

This Film is a cinematic feat and unapologetically Torontonian. The Buddy Comedy we all need to take us out of this depressing winter!

We had the joy of chatting with Johnson and McCarrol, who not only star in the Film, but co-wrote together, with the former directing. They ask us for some food recos for lunch, and we direct them to New Zealand’s The Carvery at The Well, although we felt a bit hesitant directing them to a food court. Alas, we learned that Johnson actually really loves their food court and is going to hit them up soon!

We ask them about the unique editing here which makes the most unbelievable situations believable here.

Johnson: The real struggle is not what you think. And this is what’s so fun about making movies in this format. The struggle is when the Editors get a better idea for what our scene should have been than what we had.

A great example would be (spoiler alert) when we try to sneak through security at the CN Tower, and we, and the production team were expecting to be stopped. We thought they were gonna say, “Hey! You can’t bring parachutes in here. You can’t bring wire cutters in here!”, and stop us. So they let us through and all of the sudden, we’re like “Now what do we do?”. We send that footage back to the Editors and we ask, “Can we use this? What can we do?”, and they confront us with the idea that they love this footage, so let’s see where this goes.

You actually go in and shoot what you said you were gonna shoot. Every day we were hearing alternate versions of what we had shot from the Editors as they said, “Don’t do that, do this instead”. Now that said, it means that we’re really working for them. We’re trying to shoot as much content as we can, trying to shoot as much crazy shit as we can, so that they have enough clay to really mold this into something interesting. But we trust them completely. Curt Lobb and Bobby Upchurch are more or less in-charge of the Movie.

McCarrol: It’s fun to be presented by them. We get to perform before each other. So Matt and I improvise a lot of stuff, there’s no script, and they play with those ingredients and concoct something, and they show it back to us. But often, they’re not just doing that to make it funny, they’re trying to find some better writing as well. And often what happens is, we go back to shoot again, as the Editors have discovered a way to punch-up the writing, to help it make more sense, to help the storyline.

It’s this process of going back and forth between the people on the field and the people in Editing. We’re making it all together.

Previously announced cast members of Young Sherlock include Dónal Finn (The Wheel of Time), Zine Tseng (3 Body Problem), Joseph Fiennes (The Handmaid’s Tale), Natascha McElhone (Halo), Max Irons (Condor) and Colin Firth (The King’s Speech). Guy Ritchie directs the first two episodes and executive produces. The series is created for television and executive produced by showrunner Matthew Parkhill with executive producers Dhana Rivera Gilbert, Marc Resteghini, Simon Maxwell, Ivan Atkinson, Simon Kelton, Colin Wilson, and co-executive producers Harriet Creelman and Steve Thompson. Motive Pictures led physical production for Young Sherlock.
