Although Yorkville‘s been a quiet spot compared to the old bustle it used to get, occasionally you will see some names up that way and eclectic names you see.  While sitting around, we thought we recognized Derek Cianfrance, one of our favourite Filmmakers ever, who has brought us Blue Valentine, The Place Beyond the Pines and coming next, The Light Between Oceans!

Cianfrance was so kind to stop and chat, enjoying a Smoothie in-hand before gearing for four nights of filming at Bay Station. He tells me he is directing a commercial although for what we will wait and see. He definitely is no stranger having been here a few times for TIFF and after filming his commercial, he is Venice-bound to premiere The Light Between Oceans. It stars real-life lovers, Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, who just might together be TIFF-bound.

On the other end the spectrum is Hip-Hop icon Fat Joe who appeared at both Cabana Pool Bar and Uniun Night Club tonight. The Rapper and Actor who is known for his work on smash hits like Feelin’ So Good (Jennifer Lopez), What’s Luv (Ja Rule ft. Ashanti) and Lean Back (ft. Remy Ma). He collaborates once again with the latter on recent single All the Way Up.

We spotted him arriving back from his performance at Uniun and when asked why he was done so early he said, “I’m old-school! I don’t do none of that VIP shit!”. Our kinda guy.

eOne Films release SOUTHSIDE WITH YOU Friday, August 26, 2016.

16-year-old Kaya Stewart is a name to look out for. The Popstar is emerging quickly and she just released her self-titled disc under Warner Music last week. Currently on tour with rock icons The Go-Go’s, she did the rounds earlier today including interviews at Entertainment Tonight Canada and The Morning Show, in advance of her performance at Massey Hall tonight.

The daughter of The Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart also happens to be mentored by his bandmate Annie Lennox. After making a splash on the radio with her first single In Love with a Boy, she now is onto her second single, Sleepover. Later this week she will be joined on-stage by her dad in Cleveland at the House of Blues!

One glance at her album cover and we remember right away her idol Madonna in her self-titled debut era. Her Disc shows tons of raw talent and if not this Disc, she is one to keep a tab on for sure.

Premiering at TIFF ’16 next month, here comes a First Look at ARRIVAL starring Amy Adams, from Canada’s v. own Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners, Sicario)!

Although we really, really wanted this to be ready in time for TIFF ’16, we do at least get a first look for Toronto-filmed MISS SLOANE, starring Jessica Chastain.

The Drama couldn’t be timed any more perfectly, and centers on Elizabeth Sloane (Chastain) who finds herself in a struggle to help push gun-control measures.  Directed by John Madden, it also stars Mark Strong, Jake Lacy, John Lithgow, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Michael Stuhlbarg and Sam Waterston.

It’s 21 days till TIFFmas and part of the fun is that lead-up to the world’s greatest Film Festival! Announcements were made in July at TIFF Bell Lightbox for some of the Films premiering at TIFF ’16 this September, including Galas and Special Presentations. Week by week, more Films were unveiled including Canadian titles Documentaries, Midnight Madness, Vanguard and City to City Programme Films were announced!

Highlighting the Festival this year are marquee titles and Awards Season contenders like the much-delayed SNOWDEN from Oliver Stone, DEEPWATER HORIZON from Peter Berg, PATERSON from Jim Jarsmuch, NOCTURNAL ANIMALS from Fashion Icon and Filmmaker Tom Ford, Venice Opening Night Film LA LA LAND by Damien Chazzelle who brought us 2014’s stellar WHIPLASH, QUEEN OF KATWE gives us a rare Disney selection from Mira Nair, LBJ from Rob Reiner, ARRIVAL from Canadian darling Denis Villeneuve, BIRTH OF A NATION by Actor/Director Nate Parker, PERSONAL SHOPPER from Festival darling Olivier Assayas, AMERICAN HONEY comes with much fanfare from Andrea Arnold, and highly-buzzed LOVED from Jeff Nichols.

Veering to the dark, Films like disaster flick COLOSSAL starring Anne Hathaway, dystopian cannibal Fairy Tale THE BAD BATCH, Adam Wingard‘s BLAIR WITCH and FREE FIRE starring Brie Larson, will premiere as part of the Vanguard and Midnight Madness Programmes!

Although not confirmed yet if he’ll be coming, many eyes will be on Documentary THE TURNING POINT which has Leonardo DiCaprio interviewing various subjects, shedding light how society can save endangered species, ecosystems and native communities.  AMANDA KNOX also will draw plenty of attention, giving us never-before-seen footage and accounts with those close to her much-publicized story.

Opening the Festival this year is Antoine Fuqua‘s THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN and closing it will be coming-of-age Dramedy EDGE OF SEVENTEEN by Kelly Fremon Craig. Lucky number 7 is rather prevalent at #TIFF41!

Canadian titles announced include IT’S ONLY THE END OF THE WORLD from auteur Xavier Dolan, BELOW HER MOUTH from April Mullen, MEAN DREAMS from Nathan Morlando, TWO LOVERS AND A BEAR from Kim Nguyen, WEIRDOS from Bruce McDonald and Animated Feature WINDOW HORSES from Ann Marie Fleming. As part of the Masters Program, Deepa Mehta‘s ANATOMY OF VIOLENCE also will get a World Premiere.

Jim Jarsmuch, Isabelle Huppert, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon and David Oyelowo will be front and center at the Festival this year, each with two Films apiece. Michael Fassbender will be kicking the Festival off appearing at the annual TIFF Soirée at Lightbox. He stars in TRESPASS AGAINST US which will get its World Premiere at TIFF ’16.

Lagos, Nigeria has been announced as the City of focus at the Festival’s City to City Programme, showcasing Filmmakers living in that City.

Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monáe and Pharrell Williams will appear at a special presentation of Theodore Melfi’s HIDDEN FIGURES LIVE which will for the first-time give TIFF members a chance to see footage from the upcoming Feature, followed by a live performance.

For the second time, TIFF presents its PRIMETIME Programme, focusing on Television. Episodes of series TRANSPARENT, BLACK MIRROR, WASTELAND and TUKO MACHO will be screening this year.

Teen star Bailee Madison is back in town and hard at work on the third season of THE GOOD WITCH, which films in Toronto through December.

Although we’ve had the pleasure of meeting the sweetheart on a few occasions, we thought we’d say a quick “hi”! She even did a Snap for us!

Madison while working this weekend, was able to catch the tail end of the Fifth Harmony concert the other night and tells us she had a blast!

As expected, SUICIDE SQUAD slays its opposition with a $44 million in its second week out, from 4,255 theatres for Warner Bros. In two weeks it has made $222 million.

Surprising in second is SAUSAGE PARTY, the raunchy Animated Feature voiced by Kristen Wiig and Seth Rogen among others in the star-studded cast, with $32.7 million for Sony Pictures from 3,103 theatres. Audiences gave it a B CinemaScore and Critics gave it an 83% on the Tomatometer.

PETE’S DRAGON debuts in third with $20.8 million for Disney, from 3,702 theatres. Critics gave the remake a strong 85% on the Tomatometer and Audiences gave it an equal A at CinemaScore.

JASON BOURNE is in fourth this weekend with $13.1 million for Universal Pictures in its third week out.

BAD MOMS is in fifth with $11.4 million for STX Entertainment/eOne Films, a total of $71.3 million in three weeks.

FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS opens in eighth with  $6.1 million from 1,528 theatres for eOne Films/Paramount Pictures. The Comedy starring Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant gets an A-CinemaScore and an 86% on the Tomatometer.

Rounding-out the Top Ten with $3 million for Warner Bros. is the Horror LIGHTS OUT in its fourth week out. It just surpassed the $60 million-mark this week.
