It’s officially Awards Season! Nominees for the Golden Globes were just announced earlier today. The Awards voted upon by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, are to be televised Sunday, January 5, 2020 on NBC, celebrate the year’s best in Television and Cinema. Ricky Gervais returns as host.
In the Film categories, we see JOKER, THE IRISHMAN, MARRIAGE STORY and ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD… leading the way, while the Television categories we see THE MORNING SHOW, SUCCESSION, FLEABAG, THE CROWN and BIG LITTLE LIES on-top.
The Golden Globes are never without surprises. Many are shocked not to see IT’S A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD up for Best Motion Picture, same for FORD V FERRARI. TIFF ’19 People’s Choice Award winner JOJO RABBIT only sees two nods and Director Taika Waiti isn’t among those included. While there was a bit of buzz for Greta Gerwig‘s Little Women, the Film only would see nominations for Score and Lead Actress, Saoirse Ronan. While it garnered lots of critical acclaim,Drama WAVES failed to garner any attention by the HFPA.

After filming in Toronto last spring, Ricky Gervais’ English Adaptation of French Comedy Special Correspondents is ready for the World to see. Some new images from the Netflix Movie have just surfaced.
Special Correspondents, a new Netflix original feature Film was written and directed by Ricky Gervais and starring Eric Bana (Deliver Us From Evil, Lone Survivor) and Gervais (Muppets Most Wanted, Derek) is about a struggling New York based radio journalist whose arrogance and decadent lifestyle has hindered his career. With his job on the line he fakes front line war reports from the comfort of his hideout above a Spanish restaurant in Queens.
That time we met Ricky while he was in town working on SPECIAL CORRESPONDENTShere…
SPECIAL CORRESPONDENTS streams on Netflix Canada Friday, April 29, 2016.
Despite not yet being released, ’50s-set Drama CAROL leads the way at the 73rd annual Golden Globe Awards, with nominations taking place earlier this morning with Actors Angela Bassett, Chloë Moretz, Randy Quaid and America Ferrera revealing nominees. The Film, directed by Todd Haynes centers on a romance between two women and stars Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. Nominees are decided by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, with the ceremony to take place Sunday, January 10, 2016 and air on NBC at 8:00 PM EST.
In the Motion Picture categories, there is a three-way tie for second with four nominations apiece between The Big Short, The Revenant and Steve Jobs – with only the latter having seen a release thus far.
Two Toronto-made Films in ROOM and SPOTLIGHT, both which premiered here at TIFF ’15 in September to rousing reception, received three nominations each alongside THE HATEFUL EIGHT, THE DANISH GIRL and THE MARTIAN.
The Television categories didn’t have as definitive a leader with AMERICAN CRIME, FARGO, MR. ROBOT, WOLF HALL, TRANSPARENT and OUTLANDER each getting three nominations.
Among some of the biggest snubs this year are Canadian child actor Jacob Tremblay who just received a Screen Actors Guild nomination earlier this week for his work in ROOM,Michael B. Jordan who won acclaim for his performance in latest ROCKY installment CREED and Johnny Depp, thought to be a major contender for Best Actorin a Drama for his portrayal of gangster Whitey Bulger, failed to make the cut here also.
Many also are baffled that Fox Musical Series EMPIRE is in the running for Drama Series versus Musical or Comedy Series and there is some debate about Sir Ridley Scott‘s Sci-Fi Box Office champ THE MARTIAN being classified a Comedy.
English Actor, Musician, Writer, Director, Animal Rights Activist and overall amazing person Ricky Gervais has landed! Although he was in town recently location scouting for new Film SPECIAL CORRESPONDENTS, the Funnyman is back for a quick visit to prepare for production on the Film. The Wartime Satire is an Adaptation of the French Film of the same name.
Many of us know him for his work on the British version of The Office, a string of successful Films in North America including Muppets Most Wanted and acclaimed Netflix Series Derek, but the three-time Golden Globes Host is tirelessly raising awareness via Social Media for ethical treatment of Animals and in 2013 was named PETA‘s Person of the Year.
Gervais arrived from England in Toronto tonight with his longtime Partner, Author Jane Fallon. Both were all smiles after a long flight, stopping graciously for Photos with Fans before heading into their SUV. Despite his joking about his weight gain on Social Media, Gervais looked great, rocking a New York Yankees Ballcap!

How exciting, a new Trailer for Muppets Most Wanted! After we fell in love with The Muppets allover again in 2011, we finally get more next March when this next installment of the Franchise ups the stakes with Crime, Drama and of course tons of loveability!
Official Synopsis: Disney’s Muppets Most Wanted takes the entire Muppets gang on a global Tour, selling out grand theaters in some of Europe’s most exciting destinations, including Berlin, Madrid and London. He’s been laying low since last year’s Golden Globes Kerfuffle, but we now have word that he’s back and badder than ever. Funnyman Ricky Gervais, Creator of The Office, has partnered with Netflix to release his brand new Series DEREK this Fall!
The official Synopsis is below:
A bittersweet Comedy-Drama about a group of outsiders living on society’s margins, DEREK centers around Derek Noakes (Gervais), a tender, innocent Man whose love for his job at a retirement home shines through. Derek cares deeply for the Home’s Residents, because they are kind and funny and tell him stories of what life used to be like. Working alongside Derek is Dougie (Karl Pilkington), his Landlord who is one of life’s unlucky individuals; Kev (Earl), a loveable train wreck; and Hannah (Kerry Godliman), a Care Worker in the Home and Derek’s Best Friend. She is smart, witty and hard-working, but unlucky in love, and, like Derek, always puts other people first.
Gervais not only stars in the Series, but also produces, directs and writes.
Netflix releases all seven episodes of DEREK on Thursday, September 12, 2013, just as we’ll be recovering from TIFF 2013 on our couches!
Production has begun in London for the much-anticipated Followup to 2011’s The Muppets and Disney confirms that Tina Fey, Ricky Gervais and Ty Burell wil be joining the Cast as The Muppets embark on their sell-out Tour, taking them to Berlin, Madrid and London. Trouble strikes though as Kermit becomes confused for the World’s Number One Criminal Constantine, who looks almost identical to him; they must also be wary of Dominic (Gervais), his Sidekick.
Kermit, whom I had the pleasure of chatting with last time he visited Toronto, says “This Movie takes us places we’ve never been before. And trust me—this Frog has never seen so much international flavor. I think audiences will eat it up—the entertainment, that is.”.
Bret McKenzie, who won an Oscar for Best Original Song with Man or Muppet, returns once again to write some brilliant Music for The Muppets… Again!, which hits theatres March 14, 2014.
