About The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 2:

Belly used to count down the days until she could return to Cousins Beach, but with Conrad and Jeremiah fighting over her heart and the return of Susannah’s cancer, she’s not sure summer will ever be the same. When an unexpected visitor threatens the future of Susannah’s beloved house, Belly has to rally the gang to come together—and to decide once and for all where her heart lies.

Season Two of The Summer I Turned Pretty is led by showrunners Han and Sarah Kucserka. Han, Kucserka, Karen Rosenfelt, and Gabrielle Stanton serve as executive producers, along with Hope Hartman, Mads Hansen, and Paul Lee for wiip. The series is a co-production of Amazon Studios and wiip.

#FIRSTLOOK: GLOBAL TELEVISION REVEAL 2023/2024 PROGRAMMING LINEUP

Ahead of the #CorusUpfront this afternoon, Global reveals its 2023/24 broadcast season slate featuring the most buzzworthy and talked about new series as well as the return of the network’s blockbuster hits. Delivering a solid 17 hours of simulcast programming in primetime, Global’s 2023/24 roster continues to bring audiences fresh, premium content across network TV and streaming on STACKTV and the Global TV App.

Leading this year’s TV offering is the brand new procedural drama Matlock with Oscar®-winner and screen legend Kathy Bates in the titular role. Next up is humorous new drama Elsbeth, starring Carrie Preston, based on and named after the fan favourite character from The Good Wife and The Good Fight. Also coming to Global in the coming year is new medical drama Doc, based on a massively successful Italian format and one of the most buzzed about series this broadcast season, and the hysterical comedy Poppa’s House starring Damon Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr.

Global’s fall schedule wouldn’t be complete without the return of #1 reality series Survivor back for an unprecedented 45th season where fans can look forward to action-packed 90-minute episodes each week. Then, the highly-anticipated contemporary re-imagining of the Robin Hood legend, Robyn Hood, joins the Global lineup this fall. From acclaimed Canadian music video director and filmmaker Director X, the eight-episode, one-hour series stars Jessye Romeo, Nykeem Provo, Idrissa Sanogo, Daniela Kharlamova, Jonathan Langdon, Sydney Kuhne, Ian Matthews, Kira Guloien, Manuel Rodriguez-Saenz, and Lisa Michelle Cornelius.

NEW PRIMETIME SERIES FOR 2023/24

Global’s first new pick-up is Matlock starring Emmy and Academy Award winner Kathy Bates as Madeline “Matty” Matlock, a brilliant septuagenarian who achieved success in her younger years and decides to rejoin the workforce at a prestigious law firm where she uses her unassuming demeanour and wily tactics to win cases. Matty is assigned to Olympia (Skye P. Marshall), a senior attorney and key rainmaker with a thirst for justice. Olympia’s ex-husband, Julian (Jason Ritter), the son of the head of the firm, is intrigued by Matty and her clever skills. As Matty endeavours to establish herself in her new high-stakes world, she works alongside the firm’s younger associates – the charismatic Billy (David Del Rio) and the uber ambitious Sarah (Leah Lewis).

Next comes Elsbeth, starring Carrie Preston as Elsbeth Tascioni, an astute but unconventional attorney who utilizes her singular point of view to make unique observations and corner brilliant criminals alongside the NYPD. After leaving her successful legal career in Chicago to tackle a new investigative role in New York City, Elsbeth finds herself jockeying with the toast of the NYPD, Captain C.W. Wagner (Wendell Pierce). Working alongside Elsbeth is Officer Kaya Blanke (Carra Patterson), a stoic and ethical officer who quickly develops an appreciation for Elsbeth’s insightful and offbeat ways. Elsbeth is based on the character featured in The Good Wife and The Good Fight.

Then, Doc follows hard-charging Chief of Internal & Family Medicine Dr. Amy Elias after she suffers a brain injury during a car accident and loses her memory of the last eight years. Forced to re-acclimate to the present—with no recollection of a tragedy in her personal life and bereft of the medical knowledge she’s accrued over this time she must return to being an intern and somehow rebuild her life from the fractured pieces which remain. Based on the globally acclaimed Italian television series, Doc – Nelle tue mani, created by Lux Vide, a Freemantle company.

Big laughs are also on the Global schedule with Poppa’s House, starring Damon Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr. Wayans stars as legendary radio host and happily divorced “Poppa” who has his point of view challenged at work when a new female co-host (Essence Atkins) is hired, and at home where he finds himself still parenting his adult son (Damon Wayans Jr.), a brilliant dreamer who is trying to pursue his passion while being a responsible father and husband.

Next, coming this fall, new Global original Robyn Hood follows Robyn Loxley, a young woman whose masked hip-hop band, The Hood, is known for their inventive videos and anti-authoritarian message. She lives in Sherwood Towers, a community of rental high-rises in a working-class corner of New Nottingham, where the cost of living has skyrocketed, leaving an ever-widening gap between the rich and everyone else. When Robyn finds herself fighting for her home and her family against local property developer John Prince and The Sheriff of New Nottingham, Robyn and her band The Hood decide to fight back, righting the wrongs of the corrupt elite to give back to the people.

Global is home to some of the most entertaining reality competition series. New to Global comes the high-octane Lotería Loca. In each episode, two players go head-to-head and take turns picking cards to get four-in-a-row, which is Lotería. Each time a card appears on their unique bingo-style card, they bank big money. Landing on one of the “Loca Cards” creates a twist in the game and gives players the opportunity to bank even more cash by competing in wild, interactive challenges. The player who gets the most “Loterías” on their board the fastest, moves on to the dramatic final round for a chance to win the ultimate show cash prize.

In addition, the hilarious new competition series Buddy Games, created and hosted by Josh Duhamel joins Global’s lineup later this year. Buddy Games is a reality competition inspired by executive producer Josh Duhamel’s real-life annual tradition with his lifelong friends. For the past 20 years, one weekend a summer, Duhamel reunites with his childhood friends to compete in a variety of competition-style games. Based on Duhamel’s own experience, Buddy Games will bring together best friends from different backgrounds and offer them the same opportunity to live together, compete in wild challenges and prove their bonds run deep.

Each episode of this fun-filled baking competition series gives three professional baking teams only five hours to design, bake and decorate a grand-scale cake creation based on a particular theme. In the end, the most ambitious, eye-popping and delicious cake will go home with a $10,000 prize.

HGTV Canada

HGTV Canada holds its position as the nation’s destination for all things home. The Top 5 specialty network* has inspiring and heart-warming programming that fits any style.

Viewers can look forward to a two-episode tease of the new Corus Studios series, Bryan’s All In (10×60) this fall, with the rest of the season airing in spring 2024. The series sees HGTV Canada star Bryan Baeumler travels off-the-beaten path to help struggling entrepreneurs renovate their businesses. These are ambitious dreamers who are risking it all for their passion projects, making major life changes to become their own boss – just like Bryan did. In each episode, Bryan hits the open road in his RV, spending a week helping a budding business owner through a make-or-break point in their reno. He acts as their coach and mentor, helping them overcome major hurdles, while tackling key builds in a race to open or revive their business.

The network’s #2 program last summer**, Corus Studios’ Scott’s Vacation House Rules also returns with new episodes this fall (7×60), with Scott McGillivray using his five rules to turn problem properties into profit. Along with designer Debra Salmoni, Scott unlocks the hidden rental potential of even the most neglected properties, updating and reviving them into unique and buzz-worthy places of paradise. As previously announced, this series has also been greenlit for Season 5, as part of HGTV Canada and Scott McGillivray’s four-year production commitment and exclusivity deal, and will air in the spring of 2024.

The network’s late 2024 schedule is expected to feature a diverse round-up of new and returning Corus Studios series. Hollywood icon Pamela Anderson returns for Season 2 of Pamela’s Garden of Eden (8×60), which ranked within the Top 10 of Canadian original series across specialty television last fall. Also returning for a Season 2 is Gut Job (8×60) following seasoned builder Sebastian Clovis tackling down-to-the-studs renovations; and Hoarder House Flippers (8×60), a Top 10 program on the network last summer, featuring three sets of flippers transforming dilapidated houses. Fan-favourite Rock Solid Builds (8×60), a Top 20 specialty entertainment series last spring, kicks off Season 3, showcasing even more unique and challenging builds by Randy Spracklin and his crew in Newfoundland. The HISTORY® Channel

A Top 10 specialty network*, The HISTORY® Channel spotlights true stories, big adventures, and a diversity of underrepresented voices with its slate of six new and returning factual and documentary titles.

In honour of Canada’s National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, picking up where Part 1 left off, True Story Part 2 (1×120), examines the painful legacy of the Indian Act and Residential School system on Indigenous peoples, the Sixties Scoop, the rise of Indigenous political movements and the role of Indigenous veterans in Canada’s military.

This Remembrance Day, Our War Part 2 (2×60), will shine a light on extraordinary Canadians who made heroic contributions to WWI and WWII. From the descendant of a World War I nurse killed in a war crime to a Japanese Canadian survivor of a World War II internment camp, the docu-series follow descendants as they investigate the harrowing secrets their ancestors took to the grave.

Then in winter, the premium limited documentary series Sounds Black (4×60) examines the origins and impact of Black Music in Canada. Directed by award-winning filmmaker Cazhhmere, with contributions from legends including Kardinal Offishall, Jully Black, Fefe Dobson, Maestro Fresh Wes, Deborah Cox, Keisha Chante and more, the series explores Black Canadian music from its tangled diasporic roots to its international dominance.

A Top 10 program on the network last fall*, Deadman’s Curse returns for Season 2 (8×60), with more adventures following the diverse team of explorers on their epic search for legendary lost gold in B.C. Ahead of the second season premiering next spring, the Corus Studios series has already been greenlit for a third season. The series is complemented by a previously announced companion podcast from Curiouscast, Deadman’s Curse: Slumach’s Gold. Hosted by series star Kru Williams, the podcast takes listeners deeper into the history of Slumach’s legacy.

Treehouse

Treehouse original series Builder Brothers Dream Factory gets ready to GEAR UP and GET IT DONE with new episodes (10×11) beginning this fall. Today, Disney+ revealed August 23, 2023 as the premiere date for Lucasfilm’s “Star Wars: Ahsoka.” To celebrate the upcoming series, Disney+ also debuted a TV spot and released three images from the series.

Set after the fall of the Empire, “Star Wars: Ahsoka” follows the former Jedi Knight Ahsoka Tano as she investigates an emerging threat to a vulnerable galaxy.

In addition to Rosario Dawson in the title role, “Ahsoka” stars Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Sabine Wren, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Hera Syndulla, Ray Stevenson as Baylan Skoll, Ivanna Sakhno as Shin Hati, Diana Lee Inosanto as Morgan Elsbeth, David Tennant as Huyang, Lars Mikkelsen as Grand Admiral Thrawn and Eman Esfandi appearing as Ezra Bridger.

#FIRSTLOOK: 2023 INSIDE OUT 2SLGBTQ+ FILM FESTIVAL AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED

The winners of the 2023 Inside Out 2SLGBTQ+ Film Festival Awards were announced this weekend in Toronto where $32,000 in prizes were handed out to various 2SLGBTQ+ filmmakers. Top honours went to Juan Sebastián Torales’ ALMAMULA (Best First Feature), Lulu Wei’s SUPPORTING OUR SELVES (Best Canadian Feature), Beth Warrian’s ADORE (Best Canadian Short), and Karimah Zakia Issa with SCARING WOMEN AT NIGHT (Emerging Canadian Artist).

The Audience Award winners are Ally Pankiw’s I USED TO BE FUNNY (seen in still above) for Best Narrative Feature, Loveleen Kaur’s LEILANI’S FORTUNE for Best Documentary Feature, and Zeppelin Zeerip’s APAYAUQ for Best Short Film.

The festival is also proud to announce director Judith Schuyler’s upcoming project THERE IS LIGHT won the annual “Pitch, Please!” contest. The “Pitch, Please!” competition took place in person on June 3, 2023, with competitors from across the globe presenting a short, two-minute pitch to a jury and audience. Prizes awarded to the winner include a cash production grant of $5,000 sponsored by Netflix.

#FIRSTLOOK: “SOMETHING YOU SAID LAST NIGHT” TRAILER

From Writer/Director Luis De Filippis and starring Carmen Madonia, Paige Evans, Ramona Milano and Joey Parro. SOMETHING YOU SAID LAST NIGHT looks at being transgender in a new light. In theatres July 7, 2023.

Synopsis:

In Luis De Filippis’ resonant debut, twentysomething aspiring writer Ren (Carmen Madonia) and her younger sister Siena (Paige Evans) reluctantly accompany their parents on a family vacation. They aren’t exactly excited, and it doesn’t help that their wildly nostalgic mother Mona (Ramona Milano) cranks up Italian pop tunes, old family favourites, and demands everyone sing along. Once there, Siena drinks and carouses all night long. The more reserved Ren, who is trans, is left to her own devices. Just fired and woefully short of cash, she is forced to spend time with her deliriously happy parents, hang around the apartment vaping, and utilize the free activities the resort offers — all targeted towards children or seniors.

While perfectly capturing the tenor of a summer vacation where sun, watered-down booze, boredom, and embarrassment are the standard amenities, De Filippis goes much further. Percolating underneath everything is a slight uneasiness, reflecting Ren’s discomfort at being in a conservative beach town. And then there are the secrets (hers and Siena’s) Ren’s carrying. Her mother’s penchant for bluntness, meanwhile, means that offhand remarks carry extraordinary weight and cut like a knife.

Something You Said Last Night tells a different kind of transgender story. The melodramatic clichés that have marred even sympathetic portrayals of the trans community are completely foreign to the world that writer-director De Filippis and her team create. The film also bucks tired stereotypes about Italian families being culturally conservative. Norm Li’s sensitive cinematography perfectly captures Ren’s unease and her writer’s observational mindset. And the principal cast (including Joey Parro as loving father Guido) is uniformly excellent. Even so, the movie would be inconceivable without Madonia, who delivers a magnificent performance certain to be seen as a gamechanger in years to come. Ditto the film itself.

#FIRSTLOOK: FUTURE CHICKEN FROM THE POTATOVERSE – NEW ECOTAINMENT INITIATIVE

Wind Sun Sky Entertainment, the Ontario Water Centre and its ClearWater Farm social enterprise are excited to announce today, the Potatoverse, a groundbreaking new multi-platform digital universe designed to help children counter climate “doomism” with hope, inspiration and empowerment to build a better future.

The Potatoverse revolves around a time-travelling, eco-superhero chicken named Potato, also known as “Future Chicken.”

Featuring a variety of entertaining and educational experiences for young change-makers, geared primarily for kids aged 6 to 10 years old, the project is set to formally launch in September 2023 under the Future Chicken global brand.

Lead character “Potato,” named for her love of potato peels, travels back and forth from the year 2050 and reveals how today’s ideas, including those from kids, have taken hold in a better future. She journeys with her diverse group of loveable Planet Protectors including an electric catfish fascinated by fascinators, a joke-cracking egg with rocket pants for flight, a soil connoisseur worm and an eco-detective mushroom with a passion for cyclical regeneration. Together, they help kids understand that even small actions can lead to big and lasting positive effects for the planet.

Two visionary Canadian media pioneers are behind this revolutionary initiative.

Annabel Slaight is founding chair of the Ontario Water Centre educational charity, and co-founder of the widely acclaimed OWL kids’ empire of magazines, books and television programs that have reached more than 60 million families.

Catherine Winder is CEO of Wind Sun Sky Entertainment Inc., a multi-media production company focused on building creator-driven global franchise. Rock The Barn Toronto is Toronto’s newest charity concert, set for Thursday, June 22, 2023 at the Barn at Fresh City Farms, Downsview Park! The lineup features 3 acts including Canadian country music artists: Claire Hunter, Cal Buckley, and a favourite Canadian country duo, nominated for 8 Juno Awards, as the surprise guests!

Founded by teen brothers, Callum Buckley (18) and Thomas Buckley(16), Rock the Barn Toronto is in its inaugural year. After losing a classmate to suicide days before high school graduation in 2022, the brothers were inspired to do something more. “We need more support and awareness for young people facing mental health challenges, especially since the pandemic. My brother and I decided to raise funds for youth mental health, and support the No One Left Behind Campaign at CAMH.
