Synopsis:
The last time 13-year-old Theo Decker saw his mother, she was gliding away from him into another gallery of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Seconds later, a terrorist bomb exploded destroying priceless pieces of artâŚand shattering Theoâs life forever. The tragedy changes the course of his life, sending him on a stirring odyssey of grief and guilt, reinvention and redemption, friendship and even love.
Throughout the turbulent years, as he grows into adulthood, Theo secretly clings to a single, precious objectâhis one tangible connection to the mother he lost on that terrible dayâ a priceless painting of a tiny bird chained to its perch. The Goldfinch.
A beautifully wrought coming-of-age story, intimate in its emotion and sweeping in its design, âThe Goldfinchâ is the film adaptation of Donna Tarttâs globally acclaimed and beloved bestseller of the same name. The novel, which won the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction, spent more than 30 weeks on The New York Times Best Sellers list.
Directed by BAFTA Award winner John Crowley (âBrooklynâ), the film features a multigenerational cast led by Ansel Elgort (âBaby Driverâ) as Theo Decker and Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman (âThe Hours,â âBig Little Liesâ) as Mrs. Barbour. The film also stars Oakes Fegley (âPeteâs Dragonâ) as Young Theo, Aneurin Barnard (âDunkirkâ) as Boris, Finn Wolfhard (âStranger Things,â âITâ) as Young Boris, with Sarah Paulson (âThe Post,â âAmerican Crime Storyâ) as Xandra, Luke Wilson (âThe Royal Tenenbaumsâ) as Larry, and Jeffrey Wright (HBOâs âWestworldâ) as Hobie.
âThe Goldfinchâ is produced by Nina Jacobson (âThe Hunger Gamesâ films, âAmerican Crime Storyâ) and Brad Simpson (âWorld War Z,â âAmerican Crime Storyâ). Mari Jo WinklerIoffreda, Kevin McCormick, Sue Kroll and Courtenay Valenti served as executive producers. The screenplay is by Oscar nominee Peter Straughan (âTinker Tailor Soldier Spyâ), based on the novel by Tartt.
Rounding out the main ensemble cast are Ashleigh Cummings (âMiss Fisherâs Murder Mysteriesâ) as Pippa, Willa Fitzgerald (âLittle Womenâ) as Kitsey Barbour, Aimee Laurence (âChicago P.D.â) as Young Pippa, Denis OâHare (âAmerican Horror Storyâ) as Lucius Reeve, and Boyd Gaines (2014âs âDriving Miss Daisyâ) as Mr. Barbour.
The behind-the-scenes creative team included Oscar-winning director of photography Roger Deakins (âBlade Runner 2049â), Oscar-nominated production designer K.K. Barrett (âHerâ), editor Kelley Dixon (âBreaking Badâ), and costume designer Kasia Walicka Maimone (âBridge of Spiesâ). The music is by Trevor Gureckis (âBloodlineâ).
âThe Goldfinchâ is a presentation of Warner Bros. Pictures, in association with Amazon Studios, a Color Force Production, a John Crowley Film. Slated for release on September 13, 2019, it will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures. âThe Goldfinchâ has been rated R for drug use and language.

TIFF ’18 officially has reached its cooling point, but that doesn’t mean that Day Six wasn’t filled to the brim with starpower! Ryan Gosling was out and about promoting FIRST MAN with his Castmates and Director Damien Chazelle, while Nicole Kidman continued to do the rounds for her latest, BOY ERASED. While TIFF ’18 heavyweight Lucas Hedges couldn’t make it to Toronto to promote his three Films at the Festival, it was a pleasant surprise that Singer/Songwriter/YouTuber Troye Sivan could make it for the Film in which he stars. Also, you might want to know about Sundance breakout hit ASSASSINATION NATION which premiered to much fanfare at Ryerson Theatre for Midnight Madness, as we expect this one to catch on in this post-#MeToo climate.
See who was saw!
FIRST MAN – Ryan Gosling, Damien Chazelle, Claire Foy, Kyle Chandler, Olivia Hamilton, Patrick Fugit x Corey Stoll
BOY ERASED – Nicole Kidman, Troye Sivan x Joel Edgerton, an Australian triple!
COLETTE – Keira Knightley x Dominic West
VITA AND VIRGINIA – Elizabeth Debicki
ASSASSINATION NATION – Odessay Young, Suki Waterhouse, Abra and Hari Nef
Expect things to start slowing down in terms of star-spotting, but we look forward to focusing on the Films of the Festival!

Review by Justin Waldman for Mr. Will Wong
Karyn Kusamaâs fifth Feature may be one of the strongest ones yet. Destroyer is a powerful female-driven detective Crime-Thriller amplified by Kidmanâs incredible performance. The Movie switches between the past and present effortlessly, delivering one incredible and shocking ending as well.
The Movie focuses on Erin (Nicole Kidman) as she enters a crime scene that ties back to her undercover days, where she is now determined to bring in the crime boss she tried taking down Silas (Toby Kebbell). While the story is compelling and captivating, the performance from Nicole Kidmashow-stopping and arguably one of her best performances to date. TIFF is known for Oscar movies, and Destroyer, especially Kidmanâs performance, may be in serious talk come February.
Destroyer screens on Monday, September 10 at Winter Garden Theatre, 9:30 PM, Â with an extended Q&A, Wedensday, September 12 at 1:30 PM at the Elgin, and Saturday, September 15 at 9:45 PM, TIFF Bell Lightbox.
