BritBox has announced that Edward Bluemel (We Might Regret This, My Lady Jane) will star as Agatha Christie’s iconic Belgian detective in new drama series Hercule — produced by Mammoth Screen and Agatha Christie Limited for BritBox North America and the BBC.
The six-part series is written by Benji Walters (Code of Silence, The Leopard, Obsession). Jonny Campbell (Am I Being Unreasonable?, Dracula, BAFTA winner for In The Flesh) will direct the first two episodes. Charlie Palmer (A Woman of Substance, Extraordinary) is series producer.
The series is an intimate study of Hercule the man and an epic portrait of Britain between the wars. The series takes a magnifying glass to three of Christie’s most celebrated stories, while also charting Hercule’s burgeoning friendship with Captain Arthur Hastings, his early encounters with Scotland Yard’s James Japp, and introducing him to one particular nemesis…
QUOTES:
Edward Bluemel, on his casting: “I feel very lucky to have been trusted with such an iconic character who has been played by so many great actors. I can’t wait to continue Hercule’s legacy.”
Jon Farrar, Chief Content Officer, Direct to Consumer, BBC Studios: “Few characters in fiction are as iconic as Hercule Poirot. Agatha Christie’s stories have always been a cornerstone of BritBox and with Hercule, we have an opportunity to explore a fascinating new chapter in Hercule Poirot’s life, bringing a fresh perspective to a character audiences think they know so well. We’re delighted to greenlight a series that explores Hercule like never before, with Edward Bluemel bringing his charm, dynamism, and wit to a beloved character. This is an ambitious reimagining of one of Christie’s greatest creations, and we can’t wait for audiences across North America to discover Hercule Poirot all over again.”
James Prichard, Executive Producer, Agatha Christie Limited: “My father had the privilege of working with David Suchet for nearly 25 years, and I now have the good fortune of being able to share my great grandmother’s brilliant stories with a new generation of viewers. Edward Bluemel is an extremely talented performer and will make a great addition to the long line of actors that have played this celebrated character, aided and abetted by Benji Walters’ thoughtful scripts. I cannot wait to see Edward on screen as Hercule Poirot.”
Rebecca Durbin and Damien Timmer, Executive Producers, Mammoth Screen: “Edward Bluemel and Benji Walters are both extraordinary talents and it is a joy to see them take on this beloved character and make it their own – Hercule is both a love letter to Agatha Christie and a fascinating new perspective on an iconic figure – we hope viewers will find it as arresting as we do!”
Filming will begin this summer, primarily in Liverpool.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest detectives in fiction, Agatha Christie’s Poirot novels have sold over 750 million copies, captivating readers and audiences for more than a century.
Hercule (6×60’) is produced by Mammoth Screen (part of ITV Studios) and Agatha Christie Limited for BritBox North America and the BBC. It is adapted by Benji Walters. The executive producers are Benji Walters and Jonny Campbell, James Prichard for Agatha Christie Limited, Rebecca Durbin and Damien Timmer for Mammoth Screen, Nick Lambon for the BBC, and Robert Schildhouse, Jon Farrar and Stephen Nye for BritBox. Charlie Palmer is series producer. Fifth Season is handling global distribution.
The series will stream on BritBox in the US and Canada. Today, BritBox released first look images for the second season of the acclaimed detective series Ludwig, starring David Mitchell and Anna Maxwell Martin, which will air later this year on BritBox. The photos feature a first preview of new series regulars Mark Bonnar and Sian Clifford, who join the cast this season.
Picking up from the end of season one, master puzzle-setter John ‘Ludwig’ Taylor (David Mitchell) is now a Crime Scene Consultant, working alongside DCI Russell Carter (Dipo Ola), on ‘impossible’ crimes for the Cambridge Police Authority. No longer having to masquerade as his brother, he’s openly more ‘Ludwig’ than ever – brilliant at solving puzzles but hopeless at everything else. But John’s identical twin brother, James, is still missing, and now that he’s an official employee of the station, John is forbidden from using any police resources to look for his brother or uncover exactly what he was investigating. Of course, John won’t stop and neither will Lucy (Anna Maxwell Martin), John’s sister-in-law and wife of his missing brother James. A puzzle needs solving and a husband and father needs bringing home. One masquerade may have ended, but a new one has just begun.
Joining the cast as series regulars are Mark Bonnar (Dept. Q, Guilt) as newspaper editor Gareth Fisher, Sian Clifford (Fleabag, The Ballad of Wallis Island) as local MP, Joanne Kemper, Ben Ashenden (Deep Cover, Black Mirror) as DC Ethan Cole, and Rumi Sutton (After the Flood, Mutiny) as DC Caitlin Sullivan.
Returning cast include Dylan Hughes as Henry Betts-Taylor, Dorothy Atkinson as DCS Carol Shaw, Ralph Ineson as Chief Constable Ziegler, and Karl Pilkington as DI Matt Neville.
Ludwig is created and written by Mark Brotherhood and produced by Big Talk Studios (part of ITV Studios), in collaboration with That Mitchell and Webb Company. Season one of the binge-worthy comedy-drama is BritBox’s biggest scripted series launch to date.
Ludwig season two (6×60’) is a Big Talk Studios production in association with That Mitchell And Webb Company, in co-production with BritBox and ZDF, for the BBC. It is produced in association with ITV Studios, which also handles international distribution. The series was commissioned for BBC One and BBC iPlayer by Jon Petrie, BBC Director of Comedy. Season two is again written by Mark Brotherhood, and the directors are George Kane (episodes 1,2 & 3) and Stella Corradi (episodes 4, 5 & 6). The executive producers are Kenton Allen and Toby Welch for Big Talk Studios, Mark Brotherhood, David Mitchell, Kathryn O’Connor, Chris Sussman; Robert Schildhouse and Stephen Nye for BritBox; and Claus Wunn and Frank Seyberth for ZDF. The producer is Georgie Fallon, with Anya Wilson serving as co-producer. The Commissioning Editors for the BBC are Gregor Sharp and Roya Eslami.
The first season of Ludwig is available to stream on BritBox.

Manic, arrogant, sycophantic and sadistic, Basil Fawlty (John Cleese, Monty Python and the Holy Grail) is a much put-upon, hard-working hotel manager whose life is plagued by dead guests, hotel inspectors and riff-raff. His biggest headache is his ‘little nest of vipers’ – nagging wife Sybil (Prunella Scales, Marple). Together they run their hotel, Fawlty Towers, with a little help from the unflappable Polly (Connie Booth, The Buccaneers), and hardly any help at all from Manuel (Andrew Sachs, Coronation Street), a trainee waiter from Barcelona with marginally more intelligence than a monkey. Fawlty Towers is a truly classic sitcom, in the grand tradition of British farce.

2026: Ludwig S2 | BritBox Original, BritBox Exclusive, North America Premiere | 6 x 60’ | Released Weekly
Picking up from where things were left at the end of series one, master puzzle-setter John ‘Ludwig’ Taylor (David Mitchell, Peep Show) is now a Crime Scene Consultant working on ‘impossible’ crimes for the Cambridge Police Authority. No longer having to masquerade as his brother, he’s openly more ‘Ludwig’ than ever – brilliant at solving puzzles but hopeless at everything else. But John’s identical twin brother, James (Mitchell), is still missing, and now that he’s an official employee of the station, John is forbidden from using any police resources to look for his brother or uncover exactly what he was investigating. Of course, John won’t stop and neither will Lucy (Anna Maxwell Martin, Until I Kill You), John’s sister-in-law and wife of his missing brother James – a puzzle needs solving and a husband and father needs bringing home. One masquerade may have ended, but a new one has just begun.
