After being exposed as Divergents, ruthless Erudite Faction Leader Jeanine (Kate Winslet) is driven to capture an on-the-run Four (Theo James), Peter (Miles Teller), Caleb (Ansel Elgort) and Tris (Shailene Woodley). Under Jeanine‘s directives, those in Tris‘ action including her Friends are endangered as Jeanine zeroes in her search finding one true Divergent – that is, an individual not of any specific personality type, capable of threatening the safety of the Population. To save others, Tris finds herself to facing seflessly her greatest fear as she hopes to uncover her the secret her Parents lost their lives in the name of protecting it – something which Jeanine is willing to keep hidden at all costs.
INSURGENT more than ably picks up where Divergent leaves us and part of what makes its story so brilliant is that at every turn and corner our mind plays tricks on us. We don’t know who to trust, what to believe and whether or not what we are seeing is in fact Tris‘ reality. This combined with some CGI used to great visceral effect and smartly-chorgeographed action makes for a wild ride here. One of the Film’s Taglines is ‘defy reality and it certainly lives up to it. There never is a dull moment as Director Robert Schwentke tells the Story well and does it concisely; something refreshing in Genre where often we are seeing Instalments prolonged and split for Box Office gain.
Woodley as always is fantastic as our Heroine, nailing it and taking us deep into Tris‘ mind and buried torment as she copes with her self-loathing, having lost a Friend and her Mother (Ashley Judd) in the name of her own survival. One scene involving truth serum and confessional Candor delivers us exactly why Woodley so highly is sought after in young Hollywood. James gives us pure fire as Tris‘ ‘strange boyfriend’, her anchor in this emotional journey. The addition of Four‘s estranged Mother Evelyn (Naomi Watts), is a welcome one, giving Winslet‘s Jeanine a run for her money as the Story’s powerful Matriarch. We also enjoyed Jai Courtney‘s vicious Eric, making bad look so good in hot pursuit of Tris.
