I recall being quite bummed that we never got a chance to review LOVE AGAIN when it had its theatrical run, but luckily soon enough comes its at-home release. There are two types of people in this world. The type who cringe at Rom-Coms and others like me, who feel the genre unjustly is under-represented.
The Film by Jim Strouse certainly isn’t short on talent. It is set against the backdrop of Céline Dion‘s music with Priyanka Chopra-Jonas starring as Mira, a recent widow who for sentimental reasons, sends affectionate text messages to her late fiancé’s mobile number. Little does she know that the number has been re-assigned to a Rob (Sam Heughan), who happens to be a journalist assigned to profiling legendary Dion. Affected by these beautiful messages, and a little bit jaded from failed love, he seeks-out his famous subject for advice on how to win Mira‘s heart.
If you are rolling your eyes, then stop. But if you believe in the “Power of Love”, then “Your Heart Will Go On”! LOVE AGAIN veers more to the sweet side, but Strouse manages to tug on the heartstrings approaching some of the Film’s more serious subject matter and tones. Languid in pacing at points, the Film does struggle a bit to convince you that this couldn’t have just been enjoyed at home.
Our leads are great and it is refreshing seeing Outlander star Heughan approach his role with a more comedic approach. The true star though is a delightfully funny Dion as herself in this her feature debut. Her starpower is undeniable.
