Today, Cara Delevingne launched her musical world with the interconnected songs “I Forgot” and “Out of my Head.” Together, the tracks create an immersive, 7-minute dive into her dynamic sound, revealing lyrics, and a strikingly holistic creative vision and accompanied by a short film directed by Emmy-winner Jessica Lee Gagné (Severance) — listen HERE and watch HERE. The new music arrives with the announcement of Cara signing with Warner Records and previews her debut album to follow this summer.
The impact of “I Forgot” is immediate and twofold. First, there’s Delevingne’s voice, bare and gorgeously vulnerable as she delivers the opening line, “I forgot that the world was real.” Then comes the massive wave of distorted instrumentation and electronics that subsumes everything. We’re soon pulled through spare piano passages, lush synth dreams, and eerily bass-addled spaces that mimic the visceral dissociation she’s working through via her writing in real time. A trip-hop groove then carries us into “Out of my Head” for the scene-setting lyric, “Crowded / It feels like I’m surrounded,” before Delevingne breaks herself free over bursting drum ’n’ bass.
Co-produced by Delevingne with BJ Burton (Bon Iver, Charli xcx), the songs cast genre aside to move in step with the words that she’s singing. As experimental as the music sounds, it’s plainly and deeply expressive. Gagné’s visual performs a similar trick, placing Delevingne in a series of scenes that break the fourth wall, only to reveal something far more dramatic as reality and artifice blur. The hidden infrastructure behind studio stunts and action sequences is revealed again and again, but Delevingne has to fight, dance, sing, and scream her way out.
“Music was always that dream I had, but never believed I would get the opportunity to create,” says Delevingne of her music debut. “Writing ‘I Forgot’ felt like a rebirth for me and ‘Out of my Head’ was like going to therapy. Everything has felt like it’s led up to this point and I can’t wait for everyone to experience it.”
Aaron Bay-Schuck, CEO/Co-Chairman of Warner Records Group, adds, “I didn’t know what to expect hearing this music for the first time, but it surprised me in the best possible way. It’s an incredibly exciting and ambitious offering. It takes a lot of courage to be as vulnerable as Cara is on these songs, and she masterfully intertwines so many different sonic influences in a way that is both unexpected and risky, yet digestible. We truly couldn’t be happier to have Cara join the Warner Records family.”
Delevingne made headlines late last month when she announced her new musical era with a run of shows across Europe, the U.K., and the U.S. — kicking off in Berlin on June 1 and hitting major cities including Barcelona, London, Paris, Los Angeles, and New York. She’s also playing a handful of festivals including All Things Go NYC, and Primavera Sound editions in Barcelona, Buenos Aires, and São Paulo. Full routing below; additional info HERE.
Playing and writing music have been lifelong passions for the successful model and actress. Delevingne picked up the drums at age 9, and has been known to move between sets and shoots with a guitar in hand, writing poems or lyrics in moments of quiet as a private practice. But she’s infused music into her heretofore better known creative pursuits as well, writing a song for her 2017 Luc Besson-directed space opera Valerian, and later starring in the West End’s revival of Cabaret. She’s popped up on monumental, critically acclaimed albums over the years, too: Fiona Apple’s Fetch the Bolt Cutters, St. Vincent’s Masseduction, and Dijon’s Baby.
Watch closely as Delevingne continues to pull back the veil on her most personal work yet.
