Strength training often revolves around the big three: squat, bench press, and deadlift. These compound lifts form the foundation of many power and hypertrophy programs. Occasionally, alternative training methods like rest-pause and myo reps gain attention.
Let’s break down what rest-pause and myo reps are, how they work, and whether they can stand in for the tried-and-true heavy lifts.
Rest-pause training
With rest-pause training, you perform a set to near failure, pause briefly (around 10–20 seconds), then squeeze out additional mini-sets with short rests in between. The idea is to maintain high intensity while extending time under tension.
It’s not new. Powerlifters and bodybuilders have used this technique for decades to overload muscles without doing endless straight sets. It’s efficient, demanding, and mentally tough, making it appealing for lifters looking to save time or push through strength plateaus.
Myo reps
Myo reps are a variation of rest-pause. Coined by Norwegian coach Borge Fagerli, myo reps focus on maximizing muscle fiber recruitment by performing an “activation set” followed by short-rest mini sets. After the first hard set, you rest about 10-15 seconds, then do 3–5 reps per mini set until you hit technical failure.
The benefit: more effective reps with less volume. Since muscle fibers fatigue quickly, especially the high-threshold motor units responsible for strength and size, myo reps aim to keep those fibers active for longer.
How influencers are driving trends
The rise of fitness influencers has reshaped training culture. On YouTube and Instagram, quick hacks, exotic methods, and “science-based” breakdowns grab attention.
Some influencers promote these methods like myo reps as superior to traditional training. Others may use these techniques along with gear. The result is a confusing landscape where natural lifters might chase the same results without the same tools or context. Certain influencers do acknowledge their use of steroids, leading more people to search for how they can buy steroids in Canada or the US, for example.
Why myo reps aren’t ideal for heavy compound lifts
Myo reps are rarely used with barbell compound lifts – and for good reason.
The biggest issue is technical breakdown under fatigue. Squats, deadlifts, and bench presses demand precision. As fatigue builds, so does the risk of form slipping. With isolation exercises, like bicep curls or leg extensions, that’s manageable. But with a barbell squat? One slip in form under fatigue can have serious consequences.
There’s also a logistical problem. Myo reps involve short rest periods between mini-sets. That’s easy with a dumbbell or a machine. But resetting under the bar repeatedly for squats or bench presses is not only awkward, it’s potentially dangerous without a spotter or safety bars.
And then there’s CNS fatigue. Big compound lifts tax your entire nervous system. Myo reps, by design, build up fatigue quickly. Stacking systemic stress on top of local fatigue may overwhelm your recovery capacity.
Finally, load selection becomes tricky. Myo reps may be most effective in the 30-70% 1RM range. But compound lifts usually benefit from heavier loading to target maximal strength. Using lighter weights might not provide enough stimulus, or might encourage sloppy reps just to hit the prescribed volume.
That said, myo reps can work with machine-based compound lifts like the leg press or chest press, or with safer bodyweight variations like push-ups or goblet squats.
Do they build strength?
Strength is highly specific. To lift heavy, you need to train heavy, at least some of the time. Neural adaptations, motor learning, and bracing under load all require practice with heavy weights.
Rest-pause and myo reps can build muscle and improve muscular endurance, but they might not develop max strength as effectively on their own.
That said, studies show that using moderate loads with high effort (like in myo reps) can maintain or even increase strength, especially in less experienced lifters or during deloads. But for advanced athletes chasing PRs, these methods work best as accessories, not replacements.
Fatigue and recovery
Rest-pause techniques spike fatigue quickly. That’s partly the point. You push close to failure, rest briefly, and go again. The downside is you may recover more slowly than from traditional straight sets, especially if done frequently.
Myo reps are slightly more controlled. Because you’re doing fewer total reps and working within a specific fatigue threshold, recovery is often quicker. But the cumulative effect still matters. Athletes should be careful to avoid burnout, prioritising sleep, nutrition, and stress management.
Practical programming advice
If you’re curious about integrating these techniques, you could start simple. Add rest-pause sets at the end of your workout for accessory lifts like leg press, dumbbell bench, or pull-ups. For myo reps, try a few sets with isolation moves (bicep curls, leg extensions, or machine rows).
Don’t overdo it. The intensity is high, so volume needs to be moderate. Track recovery, listen to your joints, and adjust as needed.

Today, at Annecy’s International Animation Film Festival, Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar Animation Studios offered a series of surprises that thrilled festival goers.
In the morning, Jared Bush, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ chief creative officer and director/writer of the upcoming “Zootopia 2,” made his first appearance in Annecy to debut new footage and images (including the one above) from the anticipated sequel of the beloved Oscar®-winning global hit film, which will be theatrically released this November. Thunderous applause and bursts of laughter punctuated his presentation as footage screened featured returning characters Judy Hopps (voice of Ginnifer Goodwin), Nick Wilde (voice of Jason Bateman), and Mr. Big (voice of Maurice LaMarche), and new characters Gary De’Snake (voice of Ke Huy Quan), Nibbles (Fortune Feimster) and Dr. Fuzzby (voice of Quinta Brunson). The audience was particularly delighted when learning that French actor Jean Reno will lend his voice to a cameo role as an officer of the Zootopia Police Department. To celebrate the original film, “Zootopia” will be screened tonight under the stars on Le Pâquier.
Also within the presentation, Disney legendary director Ron Clements (“The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin,” “The Princess and the Frog,” “Moana”) was honoured on stage with an induction into Annecy’s Walk of Fame. The celebration continued with a surprise announcement from Jared Bush revealing that Clements will return to Walt Disney Studios Animation in an advisory role.
In the afternoon, Pixar kicked off their panel with the arrival of Pete Docter, Pixar Animation Studios’ chief creative officer, alongside “Elio” directors Madeline Sharafian and Domee Shi, and producer Mary Alice Drumm. The “Elio” filmmakers offered a brief preview of their summer movie full of heart, laughs and fantasy. The screening of 27 minutes of the movie enchanted festival goers, leaving them eager to discover the full scope of this brand-new adventure which will hit theatres next week.
The audience was then treated to an exclusive look at Pixar’s upcoming slate by Docter, who was honoured today with an induction into Annecy’s Walk of Fame. Highlights of the presentation included never-before-seen footage from Pixar’s March, 2026 release, “Hoppers,” screened exclusively for the Annecy audience along with a sneak peek at the first two minutes of the studio’s summer 2026 release, “Toy Story 5.” Docter confirmed the return of Joan Cusack as Jessie in this next “Toy Story” chapter and announced exciting new characters as well. As the supervising animator on the original “Toy Story,” Docter then showcased rarely seen legacy footage from “Toy Story,” the first feature length computer animated film ever released, in celebration of its 30th anniversary.
Additionally, Docter announced a brand-new original project called “Gatto,” slated for summer 2027. From the filmmaking team behind “Luca,” director Enrico Casarosa and producer Andrea Warren, the new film returns to Italy, this time to Venice, where after years of maneuvering the canal-ridden, superstitious city, a black cat named Nero begins to question whether he’s lived the right lives. Indebted to a local feline mob boss, Nero finds himself in a quandary and is forced to forge a truly unexpected friendship that may finally lead him to his purpose—unless Venice gets the better of him first.
With these Disney and Pixar presentations, the studios reaffirmed their commitment to the Annecy International Animation Festival as a venue to deliver exclusive news and screenings to a global audience of animation fans.

Announced today, a three-level culinary and cultural destination—Convivium Dining Community, will open in the heart of downtown Toronto later this spring. Housed at 83 Yonge Street, this European-inspired concept will offer a thoughtfully curated menu alongside an immersive environment designed for gathering, discovery, and connection.
Designed by Dull Genius Design, Convivium marries historic charm with modern sophistication. Nestled in a heritage building dating back to 1857, the restaurant pays tribute to the Tin & Copper Smith Building, which has stood for over 160 years. Each floor of this historic space will offer a unique experience. The main floor will feature casual yet elegant dining, while the second floor will boast intimate private rooms and a craft cocktail bar. The vibrant third floor will serve as an event and celebration space, accommodating up to 100 guests. Prior to Convivium, the building was the birthplace of The Evening Star—a precursor to the Toronto Star—long serving as a hub for artisans, creators, and journalists. The ambiance at Convivium reflects this rich legacy, seamlessly blending old-world charm with contemporary elegance, making it the perfect destination for everything from casual lunches to intimate dinners.
The name “Convivium,” derived from Latin, refers to a social gathering centered around sharing meals and experiences. True to its name, this new Toronto restaurant and venue will offer a warm, inviting space where guests can escape the bustle of city life, connect with one another, and enjoy a genuine sense of community. Intended to serve as more than a restaurant, Convivium Dining Community will offer the city a new kind of downtown hub for food, culture, and community. The space will regularly host art exhibitions, wine tastings, charity events, and large-scale private events, offering a dynamic calendar of curated cultural programming that reflects Toronto’s diversity and artistic energy.
Maxim Popov, founder of Convivium, explains his vision: “I wanted to create a strong community that brings together hospitality, art, wine education and culture — a place where people can connect not only over great meals, but also through shared passions such as exhibitions, wine masterclasses and performances. A space that inspires.”
Convivium’s kitchen will be run by Executive Chef Oxana Glazkova, who has created a menu that focuses on seasonality at its core. “Every dish is a story waiting to be told,” Chef Glazkova says. The menu will feature Canadian-sourced meats, Atlantic seafood, and house-made balsamic and dressings infused with unique flavors like sea buckthorn and lingonberries. Guests can expect a menu that moves away from simple dishes and embraces complexity and tradition. One of the signature dishes, the Black Angus Tartare, has been reimagined entirely—presented on a confit or terrine of aged, pressed, and deep-fried potato, it will deliver a sublime contrast of crisp and tender. A whisper of chili aioli and a crown of black caviar elevate the dish into a celebration of elegance and depth, with each element thoughtfully placed to create a perfect bite.
Another cornerstone of Convivium’s culinary identity is the menu’s dedication to soups. While often overlooked on Canadian menus, Chef Glazkova sees soups as foundational—an expression of balance, warmth, and culinary memory. The restaurant will feature a rotating selection of 15-17 soups, including chilled varieties for summer, emphasizing a commitment to technique, texture, and storytelling through a bowl. Some are delicate and airy espuma; others, deeply rich with layers of flavor steeped in time-honored tradition.
The restaurant operations will be led by General Manager Gio Stefanopoulos, a seasoned hospitality professional with an impressive track record of opening more than 13 restaurants in Toronto, including Milos, LAB, and Paralia by the Sea. With extensive international experience spanning Australia, Europe, and Canada, Gio has mastered a diverse range of hospitality styles — from the Hard Rock Café to Luxury Waterfront Hotels and bustling Italian establishments. Throughout his career, Gio has collaborated with some of the world’s most celebrated chefs, including Lefteris Lazarou, Giannis Baxevanis, Wolfgang Von Wieser, Gordon Ramsay, and Master Matsuhisa. His leadership at Convivium will focus on delivering personalized service, impeccable hospitality standards, and unforgettable guest experiences at every touchpoint.
The beverage program will feature a carefully curated wine list with organic and biodynamic selections from Europe, Canada and Australia. The cocktail menu will focus on craft drinks created with house infusions, small-batch spirits, and seasonal ingredients—merging old-world European inspiration with modern mixology techniques.
The grand opening date for Convivium Dining Community will be revealed in the coming weeks. To stay informed and get the latest updates, visit www.myconvivium.com (website update to come) and follow @conviviumto on Instagram

Synopsis:
A new era is born. This summer, three years after the Jurassic World trilogy concluded with each film surpassing $1 billion at the global box office, the enduring Jurassic series evolves in an ingenious new direction with Jurassic World Rebirth.
Anchored by iconic action superstar Scarlett Johansson, Emmy and SAG nominee Jonathan Bailey and two-time Oscar® winner Mahershala Ali, this action-packed new chapter sees an extraction team race to the most dangerous place on Earth, an island research facility for the original Jurassic Park, inhabited by the worst of the worst that were left behind.
Also starring acclaimed international stars Rupert Friend and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, the film is directed by dynamic visualist Gareth Edwards (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) from a script by original Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp.
Five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, the planet’s ecology has proven largely inhospitable to dinosaurs. Those remaining exist in isolated equatorial environments with climates resembling the one in which they once thrived. The three most colossal creatures across land, sea and air within that tropical biosphere hold, in their DNA, the key to a drug that will bring miraculous life-saving benefits to humankind.
Academy Award® nominee Johansson plays skilled covert operations expert Zora Bennett, contracted to lead a skilled team on a top-secret mission to secure the genetic material. When Zora’s operation intersects with a civilian family whose boating expedition was capsized by marauding aquatic dinos, they all find themselves stranded on a forbidden island that had once housed an undisclosed research facility for Jurassic Park. There, in a terrain populated by dinosaurs of vastly different species, they come face-to-face with a sinister, shocking discovery that has been hidden from the world for decades.
Ali is Duncan Kincaid, Zora’s most trusted team member; Critics Choice and Olivier Award winner Jonathan Bailey (Wicked, Bridgerton) plays paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis; Emmy nominee Rupert Friend (Homeland, Obi-Wan Kenobi) appears as Big Pharma representative Martin Krebs and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (The Lincoln Lawyer, Murder on the Orient Express) plays Reuben Delgado, the father of the shipwrecked civilian family.
The cast includes Luna Blaise (Manifest), David Iacono (The Summer I Turned Pretty) and Audrina Miranda (Lopez vs. Lopez) as Reuben’s family. The film also features, as members of Zora and Krebs’ crews, Philippine Velge (Station Eleven), Bechir Sylvain (BMF) and Ed Skrein (Deadpool).
Jurassic World Rebirth is directed by BAFTA winner Edwards from a script by Koepp (War of the Worlds), based on characters created by Michael Crichton. The film is produced by Oscar® nominee Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley, both longtime Jurassic franchise producers and of last summer’s blockbuster, Twisters. The film is executive produced by Steven Spielberg, Denis L. Stewart and Jim Spencer.

Universal Pictures Canada x Mr. Will are thrilled to give Readers a chance to win passes to an Advance Screening of M3GAN 2.0.
Screenings take place as follows on Wednesday, June 25, 2025:
Toronto:
Cineplex Yonge & Dundas at 7pm
Montreal (EN):
Cinema Banque Scotia at 7:30pm
Synopsis:
The murderous doll who captivated pop culture in 2023 is back. And this time she’s not alone.
The original creative team behind that phenomenon—led by horror titans James Wan for Atomic Monster, Jason Blum for Blumhouse and director Gerard Johnstone—reboot an all-new wild chapter in A.I. mayhem with M3GAN 2.0.
Two years after M3GAN, a marvel of artificial intelligence, went rogue and embarked on a murderous (and impeccably choreographed) rampage and was subsequently destroyed, M3GAN’s creator Gemma (Allison Williams) has become a high-profile author and advocate for government oversight of A.I. Meanwhile, Gemma’s niece Cady (Violet McGraw), now 14, has become a teenager, rebelling against Gemma’s overprotective rules.
Unbeknownst to them, the underlying tech for M3GAN has been stolen and misused by a powerful defense contractor to create a military-grade weapon known as Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno; Ahsoka, Pacific Rim: Uprising), the ultimate killer infiltration spy. But as Amelia’s self-awareness increases, she becomes decidedly less interested in taking orders from humans. Or in keeping them around.
With the future of human existence on the line, Gemma realizes that the only option is to resurrect M3GAN (Amie Donald, voiced by Jenna Davis) and give her a few upgrades, making her faster, stronger, and more lethal. As their paths collide, the original A.I bitch is about to meet her match.
Directed by acclaimed returning filmmaker Gerard Johnstone, the film co-stars returning cast members Brian Jordan Alvarez and Jen Van Epps as Gemma’s loyal tech teammates, Cole and Tess, and new characters played by Aristotle Athari (Saturday Night Live, Hacks), Timm Sharp (Apples Never Fall, Percy Jackson and the Olympians) and Grammy winner and 11-time Emmy nominee Jemaine Clement (Avatar: The Way of Water, What We Do in the Shadows).
Produced by James Wan, Jason Blum and Allison Williams, the film is executive produced by Gerard Johnstone, Adam Hendricks, Greg Gilreath, Michael Clear, Judson Scott and Mark D. Katchur.
The first M3GAN film shattered box office records, opening to $30.4 million domestically to become the biggest opening weekend for a PG-13 horror film since A Quiet Place Part II. The film went on to gross more than $180 million worldwide.

In two feature films, Celine Song has changed the way we see the world with her daring, complex explorations of love in 2023’s PAST LIVES and now MATERIALISTS, coming out this Friday! Though the Academy Award-winning Screenwriter/Playwright/Director is now based in New York, Toronto (Markham, specifically) actually once was home to her, immigrating here with her family from South Korea.
Song got a big welcome home last night with a special TIFF Screening and Q&A with Cameron Bailey to an enthusiastic crowd at that sold-out affair. She spoke about the granular details of making the Romantic-Dramedy starring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal and found it challenging to match her characters’ with their neighbourhoods she initially had written them from with the New York real estate and rental landscape being impacted by gentrification over the past few years.
MATERIALISTS already is seeing rave reviews and we can tell you, it is our favourite film of 2025! Our Review here:
Song was so gracious to stop for a quick snap on her press tour, and was so sweet, taking in our showering of praise. You can genuinely tell when I am truly starstruck by the goofy looks on my face! I couldn’t even focus!
