HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON breathes fire into the Box Office this weekend debuting with a hefty $82 million from 4,356 theatres for Universal Pictures, making it a Franchise best for this live action remake. Previous best was 2019’s THE HIDDEN WORLD with a $55 million opening. Canadian Director Dean DeBlois’ adaptation gets 77% on the Tomatometer.
LILO & STITCH takes $16 million in its fourth weekend for Disney, taking it to $367 million domestically.
MATERIALISTS opens with $12 million from 2,844 theatres for A24/VVS Films, nabbing a stellar 87% on the Tomatometer for this latest effort from Celine Song.
MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – THE FINAL RECKONING comes in fourth with $9 million, bringing it to $165.2 million domestically for Paramount Pictures.
BALLERINA rounds things out with $8 million from 3,409 theatres, bringing its two week total to $41.4 million for Cineplex Pictures/Lionsgate.
In two feature films, Celine Song has changed the way we see the world with her daring, complex explorations of love in 2023’s PAST LIVES and now MATERIALISTS, coming out this Friday! Though the Academy Award-winning Screenwriter/Playwright/Director is now based in New York, Toronto (Markham, specifically) actually once was home to her, immigrating here with her family from South Korea.
Song got a big welcome home last night with a special TIFF Screening and Q&A with Cameron Bailey to an enthusiastic crowd at that sold-out affair. She spoke about the granular details of making the Romantic-Dramedy starring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal and found it challenging to match her characters’ with their neighbourhoods she initially had written them from with the New York real estate and rental landscape being impacted by gentrification over the past few years.
MATERIALISTS already is seeing rave reviews and we can tell you, it is our favourite film of 2025! Our Review here:
Song was so gracious to stop for a quick snap on her press tour, and was so sweet, taking in our showering of praise. You can genuinely tell when I am truly starstruck by the goofy looks on my face! I couldn’t even focus!
VVS Films release MATERIALISTS Friday, June 13, 2025.
