From Writer/Director Luis De Filippis and starring Carmen Madonia, Paige Evans, Ramona Milano and Joey Parro. SOMETHING YOU SAID LAST NIGHT looks at being transgender in a new light. In theatres July 7, 2023.
Synopsis:
In Luis De Filippis’ resonant debut, twentysomething aspiring writer Ren (Carmen Madonia) and her younger sister Siena (Paige Evans) reluctantly accompany their parents on a family vacation. They aren’t exactly excited, and it doesn’t help that their wildly nostalgic mother Mona (Ramona Milano) cranks up Italian pop tunes, old family favourites, and demands everyone sing along. Once there, Siena drinks and carouses all night long. The more reserved Ren, who is trans, is left to her own devices. Just fired and woefully short of cash, she is forced to spend time with her deliriously happy parents, hang around the apartment vaping, and utilize the free activities the resort offers — all targeted towards children or seniors.
While perfectly capturing the tenor of a summer vacation where sun, watered-down booze, boredom, and embarrassment are the standard amenities, De Filippis goes much further. Percolating underneath everything is a slight uneasiness, reflecting Ren’s discomfort at being in a conservative beach town. And then there are the secrets (hers and Siena’s) Ren’s carrying. Her mother’s penchant for bluntness, meanwhile, means that offhand remarks carry extraordinary weight and cut like a knife.
Something You Said Last Night tells a different kind of transgender story. The melodramatic clichés that have marred even sympathetic portrayals of the trans community are completely foreign to the world that writer-director De Filippis and her team create. The film also bucks tired stereotypes about Italian families being culturally conservative. Norm Li’s sensitive cinematography perfectly captures Ren’s unease and her writer’s observational mindset. And the principal cast (including Joey Parro as loving father Guido) is uniformly excellent. Even so, the movie would be inconceivable without Madonia, who delivers a magnificent performance certain to be seen as a gamechanger in years to come. Ditto the film itself.

Wind Sun Sky Entertainment, the Ontario Water Centre and its ClearWater Farm social enterprise are excited to announce today, the Potatoverse, a groundbreaking new multi-platform digital universe designed to help children counter climate “doomism” with hope, inspiration and empowerment to build a better future.
The Potatoverse revolves around a time-travelling, eco-superhero chicken named Potato, also known as “Future Chicken.”
Featuring a variety of entertaining and educational experiences for young change-makers, geared primarily for kids aged 6 to 10 years old, the project is set to formally launch in September 2023 under the Future Chicken global brand.
Lead character “Potato,” named for her love of potato peels, travels back and forth from the year 2050 and reveals how today’s ideas, including those from kids, have taken hold in a better future. She journeys with her diverse group of loveable Planet Protectors including an electric catfish fascinated by fascinators, a joke-cracking egg with rocket pants for flight, a soil connoisseur worm and an eco-detective mushroom with a passion for cyclical regeneration. Together, they help kids understand that even small actions can lead to big and lasting positive effects for the planet.
Two visionary Canadian media pioneers are behind this revolutionary initiative.
Annabel Slaight is founding chair of the Ontario Water Centre educational charity, and co-founder of the widely acclaimed OWL kids’ empire of magazines, books and television programs that have reached more than 60 million families.
Catherine Winder is CEO of Wind Sun Sky Entertainment Inc., a multi-media production company focused on building creator-driven global franchise. The multi-platform brand-builder and entrepreneur has worked with filmmakers and visionaries to adapt iconic properties such as Star Wars: Clone Wars, Angry Birds, Ice Age, and Invincible.
Working with a team of global creators, technologists, educators and storytellers, Slaight and Winder have created the Potatoverse as a new model for the future of children’s learning-based media.
It’s built around a “flywheel” of entry points to entertaining digital content starring Potato and the Planet Protectors that helps kids learn on the platforms they choose and love. Multi-platform experiences include hundreds of animated 30 to 60-second videos that spark curiosity, and an initial series called “The Future Chicken Today Show” that uses game-engine animation technology to enable Potato to interview in fun and funny ways for kids climate experts, celebrities and kids taking positive steps to help the planet.
The initiative also includes games on the leading kids’ platform Roblox; a podcast for families to listen to together and a website hub where kids, parents and teachers can connect. These fully immersive experiences will engage children across interconnected platforms and nurture an appreciation and curiosity about the wonders of nature and outdoor exploration.
Negativity around climate change can be pervasive and overwhelming. The Potatoverse gives children a space to immerse in hope and positivity, grounded in evidence-based climate solutions in fun, engaging and interactive ways.
Winder and Slaight say the initiative was sparked by the inspiring imagination and enthusiasm of kids.
“By providing kids with an optimistic lens, the Potatoverse “Future Chicken” universe holds transformative potential to help the next generation become innovators who will make a lasting impact on our planet. By empowering kids to explore their own ideas while fostering a deep connection with nature, Potatoverse will be a forum for kids to contribute meaningfully as catalysts for positive change. We are filling the hope gap for children when it comes to the future. But as it should be for kids, play and fun is at the heart of everything we are doing.”
Leveraging cutting-edge technology combined with stories and nature, Future Chicken and the many adventures she and the Planet Protectors will take in Potatoverse will propel kids into the brilliance of nature’s wonders and human inventions when it launches in September 2023. The co-creators are actively pursuing additional support from individuals, foundations or corporations who share the same enthusiasm for the initiative’s vast potential.

Rock The Barn Toronto is Toronto’s newest charity concert, set for Thursday, June 22, 2023 at the Barn at Fresh City Farms, Downsview Park! The lineup features 3 acts including Canadian country music artists: Claire Hunter, Cal Buckley, and a favourite Canadian country duo, nominated for 8 Juno Awards, as the surprise guests!
Founded by teen brothers, Callum Buckley (18) and Thomas Buckley(16), Rock the Barn Toronto is in its inaugural year. After losing a classmate to suicide days before high school graduation in 2022, the brothers were inspired to do something more. “We need more support and awareness for young people facing mental health challenges, especially since the pandemic. My brother and I decided to raise funds for youth mental health, and support the No One Left Behind Campaign at CAMH. Our two greatest passions are music and charity, and creating a country music concert fundraiser in support of mental health is a way we can help,” says co-founder and opening artist Callum Buckley.
“CAMH Foundation is grateful to Rock The Barn Toronto for their support and to all of the Canadian artists for courageously sharing their stories of experience with mental illness and mental health challenges. This event is not only raising critical funds to support the work of Canada’s leading mental health hospital, it is driving forward new, open conversations about mental health and reminding people there is always hope and help,” said Deborah Gillis, President & CEO of CAMH Foundation.
With great Canadian country music acts, a gourmet taco menu, and ice-cold beverages, the all-inclusive ticket is sure to kick-off the summer and help raise much needed funds and awareness for mental health. Thanks to generous sponsors, 100% of the ticket price and all donations, will be donated directly to CAMH and the No One Left Behind Campaign. SYNOPSIS
Warner Bros. Pictures presents “The Flash,” directed by Andy Muschietti (the “IT” films, “Mama”). Ezra Miller reprises their role as Barry Allen in the DC Super Hero’s first-ever standalone feature film.
Worlds collide in “The Flash” when Barry uses his superpowers to travel back in time in order to change the events of the past. But when his attempt to save his family inadvertently alters the future, Barry becomes trapped in a reality in which General Zod has returned, threatening annihilation, and there are no Super Heroes to turn to. That is, unless Barry can coax a very different Batman out of retirement and rescue an imprisoned Kryptonian… albeit not the one he’s looking for. Ultimately, to save the world that he is in and return to the future that he knows, Barry’s only hope is to race for his life. But will making the ultimate sacrifice be enough to reset the universe?
“The Flash” ensemble also includes rising star Sasha Calle, Michael Shannon (“Bullet Train,” “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”), Ron Livingston (“Loudermilk,” “The Conjuring”), Maribel Verdú (“Elite,” “Y tu mamá también”), Kiersey Clemons (“Zack Snyder’s Justice League,” “Sweetheart”), Antje Traue (“King of Ravens,” “Man of Steel”) and Michael Keaton (“Spider-Man: Homecoming,” “Batman”).
“The Flash” is produced by Barbara Muschietti (the “IT” films, “Mama”) and Michael Disco (“Rampage,” “San Andreas”). The screenplay is by Christina Hodson (“Birds of Prey,” “Bumblebee”), with a screen story by John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein (“Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” “Spider-Man: Homecoming”) and Joby Harold (“Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,” “Army of the Dead”), based on characters from DC. The executive producers are Toby Emmerich, Walter Hamada, Galen Vaisman and Marianne Jenkins.
Joining director Muschietti behind the camera are director of photography Henry Braham (“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” “The Suicide Squad”), production designer Paul Denham Austerberry (“IT Chapter Two,” “The Shape of Water”), editors Jason Ballantine (the “IT” films, “The Great Gatsby”) and Paul Machliss (“The Gentlemen,” “Baby Driver”), and costume designer Alexandra Byrne (“Doctor Strange,” “Guardians of the Galaxy”); the score is by Benjamin Wallfisch (“The Invisible Man,” the “IT” films).
Warner Bros. Pictures presents a Double Dream/a Disco Factory production of an Andy Muschietti film, “The Flash.” It will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures and is set to open in theatres in North America on June 16, 2023 and internationally beginning 14 June 2023.

Paramount+ today announced the acquisition of a new original film, LOVE IN TAIPEI, based on the New York Times’ best-selling novel Loveboat, Taipei by Abigail Hing Wen. In the novel, a young American woman is sent by her parents to a cultural immersion program in Taipei – inspired by an actual program attended by thousands of Chinese and Taiwanese diaspora youth – where she begins a new journey of self-discovery and romance. LOVE IN TAIPEI will premiere this summer exclusively on Paramount+ in the U.S. and Canada, and will also be coming to the service in the UK, Australia, Latin America, Brazil, Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and South Korea. Paramount Global Content Distribution will distribute the film, with additional territories to be announced.
LOVE IN TAIPEI will star Ashley Liao (Fresh Off The Boat, The Hunger Games: The Battle of Songbirds and Snakes) as Ever Wong, whose summer takes an unexpected turn when her parents surprise her with a trip to Taipei for a cultural immersion program. Ever is surprised to discover that she hasn’t signed up for homework and history lessons, but instead for a summer-long free-for-all the locals and other students call “Loveboat.” It quickly lives up to its name when Ever finds herself trying not to fall for two attractive but wildly different boys who are vying for her attention, while at the same time finding the courage to defy her parents’ high expectations and pursue her true passion: dancing.
In addition to Ashley Liao, LOVE IN TAIPEI also stars Ross Butler (Shazam! Fury of the Gods, To All The Boys franchise) as Rick Woo, an infamous sports and scholastic prodigy; Nico Hiraga (Booksmart, Moxie) as Xavier Yeh, a free-spirited artist and heir to an international tech empire; Chelsea Zhang (Daybreak, Titans) as Ever’s friend Sophie, whom she meets at Loveboat; and Cindy Cheung (The Sinner, 13 Reasons Why) as Ever’s Aunt Shu.
LOVE IN TAIPEI is directed by Arvin Chen (Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?) and produced by Matt Kaplan for Ace Entertainment. The film, shot on location in Taipei, is based on the bestselling book Loveboat, Taipei by Abigail Hing Wen, who also serves as executive producer, with the screenplay by Charlie Oh and Mackenzie Dohr. Christopher Foss, Matthew Janzen, Max Siemers, Aubrey Bendix, Cheng-Chung Chang and Ross Butler also serve as executive producers. The production was headed by Ace Entertainment, which purchased the film rights to the novel, financed and oversaw production with 1 Productions Film. Lionsgate handled the film’s sale globally to Paramount+.
HarperCollins published the book series, which continues the journey with Loveboat Reunion and the upcoming Loveboat Forever.
