A trailer is now available to celebrate the upcoming Disney+ debut of Marvel Animation’s “X-Men ’97.” The all-new series, which features 10 episodes, begins streaming March 20, 2024.

“X-Men’97” revisits the iconic era of the 1990s as The X-Men, a band of mutants who use their uncanny gifts to protect a world that hates and fears them, are challenged like never before, forced to face a dangerous and unexpected new future. The voice cast includes Ray Chase as Cyclops, Jennifer Hale as Jean Grey, Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm, Cal Dodd as Wolverine, JP Karliak as Morph, Lenore Zann as Rogue, George Buza as Beast, AJ LoCascio as Gambit, Holly Chou as Jubilee, Isaac Robinson-Smith as Bishop, Matthew Waterson as Magneto and Adrian Hough as Nightcrawler. To celebrate the ultra-sexy, lavish third season of Bridgerton, Netflix and Shondaland hosted a fan event releasing news about the upcoming season that premieres in two parts on May 16 and June 13, 2024. The panel included Executive Producer, Shonda Rhimes, season three showrunner, Jess Brownell, author of the original Bridgerton novels, Julia Quinn, and cast members: Nicola Coughlan, Luke Newton, Golda Rosheuvel, Adjoa Andoh, Claudia Jessie, Luke Thompson, and Martins Imhangbe. The panel unveiled episode titles, exclusive character photos, confirmation of book-to-episode adaptations, a surprise fan wedding announcement, and a sneak peek of the season premiere.

The panel began with a conversation between Shonda Rhimes and Jess Brownell about what fans can anticipate for season three, along with insights from author Julia Quinn on the adaptation of the source material. They confirmed the fan-favorite moment in the novel, Romancing Mr. Bridgerton, where Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) wraps Colin Bridgerton’s (Luke Newton) hand after he accidentally cuts it, will be included. Jess Brownell then unveiled episode titles that teased the season’s story arc which can be found here.

“Usually we’re meeting a new person who’s falling in love with one of our regulars,” said Shonda Rhimes when asked about what excites her most this season. “But this time, we know the people who are falling in love. We’re already rooting for them because we already know them, and I’m excited for that.”

“Colin and Penelope are underdogs in many ways…we get to see these characters step into their power this year, which I think will make a lot of people who have ever had an unrequited crush or felt like an underdog before feel very seen,” said Jess Brownell.

Next, Rhimes, Brownell, and Quinn were joined by the cast to tease their characters’ arcs for the season, and introduced a strong new suitor for Coughlan’s Penelope– Lord Debling (Sam Phillips). Fans were also rewarded with exclusive photos from the forthcoming season of their favorite characters including Eloise Bridgerton (Claudia Jessie), Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson), Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel), Lady Danbury (Adjoa Andoh), Cressida Cowper (Jessica Madsen), Will Mondrich (Martins Imhangbe), Alice Mondrich (Emma Naomi) and the Featherington sisters Prudence Featherington (Bessie Carter) and Philipa Featherington (Harriet Cains).

In a delightful twist, Adjoa Andoh and Golda Rosheuvel revealed Netflix will be celebrating the love of fans by rewarding one super-fan couple with a Bridgerton-themed wedding, further solidifying the bond shared between the series and its’ dedicated fan base. TIFF Cinematheque is honouring the inimitable Patricia Rozema in a special series, A Certain Slant of Light: The Films of Patricia Rozema. Her films have been lauded for their complex, sympathetically rendered characters, often portraits of artists in crisis ― particularly women, as in White Room and When Night Is Falling, both of which are presented in brand new restorations ― and those reckoning with conflicting aspects of their personalities or familial obligations, as in Mouthpiece and Into the Forest. Rozema will be in attendance for a number of screenings and Q&As throughout its run. The series is curated by Robyn Citizen, Director of Programming, Festival and TIFF Cinematheque.

Rebel Yell: Girlhood in the 1980s, pays homage to punk girls featuring films such as Lou Adler’s Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains and Marisa Silver’s Old Enough. This brief but indelible cycle of films feels particularly relevant today, as the call to radicalize girlhood, and gender in general is of great urgency and import. These films were an early call to action that, while ignored initially, are today profoundly prescient. And while frank and at times depicting deeply troubling issues, these works nevertheless, burn bright. This series is curated by guest curator Alicia Fletcher.

On March 8, International Women’s Day, TIFF will be showing Carla Gutiérrez’s debut documentary Frida in a limited screening hot off the heels of Sundance and ahead of its Amazon premiere ― an intimate portrait of one of the world’s most celebrated artists; and Tautuktavuk (What We See), a 2023 Canada’s Top Ten film from directors Carol Kunnuk and Lucy Tulugarjuk, an evocative, drawn-from-life tale about two siblings’ attempts to heal and overcome trauma during the pandemic. Meredith Hama-Brown’s debut feature Seagrass, a Canada’s Top Ten film, about an unconventional couples’ therapy retreat that exposes the fractures in a biracial family is also playing, with the filmmaker in attendance for a post-screening Q&A on February 25.

TIFF is introducing a new marquee series, coming to TIFF Lightbox this summer, Women in Action, an international survey of some of the most culturally significant and influential action films helmed by women. Inspired by Michelle Yeoh’s 2023 Oscar triumph, this major series will feature more than 20 films, and will be accompanied by free public events. The series is curated by Anita Lee, TIFF’s Chief Programming Officer; Robyn Citizen, Director of Programming, Festival and Cinematheque; and Jessica Smith, Producer, TIFF Lightbox Programming and Projects. It was the first Pixar movie with a female protagonist and reflects the changing meaning of the term “Disney princess.” Merida, Brave’s wild-haired heroine, is skillful and self-reliant; she’s also the first princess not to have a love interest. Instead, the relationship at the centre of the movie is one that’s likely much more relatable to its young viewers: the complex blend of loving affection and straining expectation that exists between a teen girl and her mother.

The Making of Priscilla with Liv McNeil | March 1, 6pm
TIFF Next Wave presents a special look behind-the-scenes with Liv McNeil’s documentary The Making of Priscilla. Follow the film student as she shadows Sofia Coppola on the 30-day shoot of Priscilla. The film features exclusive interviews with Coppola, Priscilla Presley, and Cailee Spaeny, and includes the games and rituals that make the filmmaker’s sets unlike any other directors. Following the screening, director Liv McNeil will join TIFF for a conversation about her journey breaking into the industry and discovering her voice as an emerging artist, featuring clips from her past work.

Anime fans have made their voices heard! With more than 34 million votes cast from the anime community around the world (nearly doubling from 18 million last year), the 2024 Crunchyroll Anime Awards has revealed today a star-studded slate of musical performances including YOASOBI and Shing02 who will perform beloved tracks from fan-favourite anime, alongside additional celebrity presenters including wrestling legend Mercedes Varnado, American football star DeMarcus Lawrence, and actress, singer, and model Chiaki Kuriyam

Unique to this year’s celebration is a first-of-its-kind Crunchyroll Anime Awards Theme, specially created by composer and music producer Hiroyuki SAWANO (Attack on Titan, Solo Leveling) and composer, arranger, and lyricist KOHTA YAMAMOTO (Attack on Titan, The Seven Deadly Sins), who will perform the song live at the ceremony in full for the first time. The iconic show opening will be available to stream on Crunchyroll after the conclusion of the Anime Awards

Music at the 2024 Anime Awards will be a celebration of key moments in anime history. In commemoration of the 20th anniversary of Samurai Champloo, Shing02, OMA, and SPIN MASTER A-1 will perform the show’s opening song “battlecry,” exclusively for livestream viewers. The Anime Awards will also commemorate important anime anniversaries through the presentation of a unique musical performance that brings together iconic songs from series celebrating milestones, performed by a live orchestra in a symphony format. Japanese pop duo YOASOBI will also perform ahead of their set at Coachella. For fans looking to hype themselves up in advance, select music videos and concert performance videos from Hiroyuki SAWANO and YOASOBI are available to stream on Crunchyroll.

The Anime Awards will take place on Saturday, March 2, 2024, with a live ceremony hosted by renowned voice actress Sally Amaki and popular entertainer Jon Kabira. Fans can watch the Anime Awards livestream on Crunchyroll channels on YouTube and Twitch beginning at 6PM JST. Walt Disney Animation Studios’ collaboration with Pan-African entertainment company Kugali has culminated in the all-new six-part series “Iwájú,” streams exclusively on Disney+ in Canada beginning Feb. 28, 2024. Today we get a new Trailer!

“Iwájú” is an original animated series set in a futuristic Lagos, Nigeria. The exciting coming-of-age story follows Tola, a young girl from the wealthy island, and her best friend, Kole, a self-taught tech expert, as they discover the secrets and dangers hidden in their different worlds. Kugali filmmakers—including director Olufikayo Ziki Adeola, production designer Hamid Ibrahim and cultural consultant Toluwalakin Olowofoyeku—take viewers on a unique journey into the world of “Iwájú,” bursting with unique visual elements and technological advancements inspired by the spirit of Lagos. The series is produced by Disney Animation’s Christina Chen with a screenplay by Adeola and Halima Hudson. “Iwájú” features the voices of Simisola Gbadamosi, Dayo Okeniyi, Femi Branch, Siji Soetan and Weruche Opia.

Said Adeola, “Crafting the narrative of ‘Iwájú’ has been a journey of creative alchemy, blending the rich cultural tapestry of Lagos with imaginative leaps into the future. Also debuting Feb. 28 on Disney+ is “Iwájú: A Day Ahead,” a documentary special filmed across three continents that shares the story of the founders of the Pan-African entertainment company, Kugali, who made their dream a reality creating an original animation series with Walt Disney Animation Studios. Created by the ABC News Studios and Walt Disney Animation Studios team that brought you “Into the Unknown: Making Frozen 2,” the documentary shows anything is possible when talent meets opportunity. “Iwájú: A Day Ahead” is directed by Megan Harding and executive produced by Amy Astley and Beth Hoppe.
