Back for its 145th year, Ontario’s favourite fair and end-of-summer rite of passage, the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) is set to make its grand return, August 16 to September 2, 2024. This year’s attractions are bringing all the thrills with extreme sports taking centre stage. On the heels of the Paris Olympics, the oldest competing skateboarder this year, 51-year-old Andy Macdonald of Great Britain, will make his CNE debut joining an exciting line-up of pro-skaters, BMX bikers and in-line skaters for The EX Games. A massive 12ft half-pipe will be the playground for some of the world’s best extreme athletes who will put on a high-flying show daily in front of the iconic Princes’ Gates.

The EX Games will be located at Princes’ Gates. Three performances daily at 1:30pm, 3:30pm and 5:30pm.
There’s plenty more EX-hilaration from sea to sky with the return of the popular waterskiing show, CNE Aquarama, on the West Channel of Lake Ontario – showcasing incredible flips, spins, flyboarding and human pyramids on the water; as well as the 75th anniversary of the Canadian International Air Show, featuring the beloved Canadian Forces Snowbirds, Royal Air Force Red Arrows, and the United States Air Force F-22 Raptor. Three-time world champion skater Elvis Stojko is back with an all-new Aerial & Acrobatic Ice-Skating Show “ACTION!”; and icons of wrestling will be ringside to sign autographs and put on a show at Classic Championship Wrestling including WWE Hall of Famers Jimmy “The Mouth of the South” Hart, Tito Santana, and Jerry “The King” Lawler; along with Canadian legend “The Mountie” Jacques Rougeau, and Mexico’s AAA wrestling superstar Sam Adonis.

Classic Championship Wrestling will be located East of BMO Field. Three performances daily at 2:30pm, 4:30pm, and 6:30pm.

And for those who want to ‘fight’ their way to the top of the leader board, the CNE Gaming Garage, sponsored by Intel, is back with the first-ever national CNE Master Clash ft TEKKEN 8 Tournament. In collaboration with Intel, MSI, and Best Buy, preliminary rounds will take place in Calgary, Vancouver, Edmonton and Montreal and top qualifiers will receive a trip to Toronto to compete at the CNE Finals for the $12,000 prize pool. Registration is still open, with the Last Chance Qualifiers taking place at the CNE on August 24. Families and young gamers can also enjoy interactive play in the new Byte Sized Gaming Zone, watch the FIRST Robotics Competition, or go ‘old school’ with retro arcades.

Speaking of retro, visitors can learn about the history of television and marvel at TVs of yesteryear at the MZTV Museum of Television Exhibit; or ‘step right up’ to the Carnival Exhibit of quirky artifacts from the Conklin company, that was once one of the oldest travelling carnivals. In association with the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO), the CNEA’s Withrow Common Gallery will feature “Bridging Eras & Galleries” – exhibiting images of important artworks by Group of Seven and other distinguished artists that were once owned by the Canadian National Exhibition, before the historic art collection was transferred to the AGO in the 1960s. Through various art displays, exhibits, walking tours, and even ghost walks, visitors are encouraged to discover the CNE’s heritage, history, and influence.

Cameron Bailey is delighted to announce four more esteemed honourees who will be receiving a TIFF Tribute Award at this year’s Festival. Recipients include Academy Award–nominated and renowned British filmmaker Mike Leigh, who will be honoured with the TIFF Ebert Director Award. Canadian rising star Durga Chew-Bose will be honoured with the TIFF Emerging Talent Award presented by Amazon MGM Studios; this award is in the spirit of Torontonian Mary Pickford, the groundbreaking actor, producer, and co-founder of United Artists, whose impact continues today. French songwriting and composing duo Camille Dalmais and Clément Ducol will be presented with the TIFF Variety Artisan Award for composing the soundtrack for Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez, a Netflix film; the award recognizes distinguished creatives who have excelled at their craft and made an outstanding contribution to cinema and entertainment. This latest group of recipients will be honoured alongside the recently announced Amy Adams, Cate Blanchett, and David Cronenberg at the TIFF Tribute Awards gala fundraiser on Sunday, September 8, at Fairmont Royal York Hotel, with Sandra Oh serving as Honorary Chair.

Mike Leigh returns to the 49th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival for the World Premiere of his 23rd film, Hard Truths, screening as part of the Special Presentations programme. He reunites with Academy Award nominee Marianne Jean-Baptiste (Secrets & Lies) to create a challenging but ultimately compassionate, intimate study of a modern family life. Hard Truths is distributed by Bleecker Street in the US and by Mongrel Media in Canada. Leigh has had eight films in Official Selection at the Festival, including Another Year, Happy-Go-Lucky, and Mr. Turner. Named after legendary film critic Roger Ebert, the Award has gone to celebrated visionaries such as Martin Scorsese, Claire Denis, Ava DuVernay, Wim Wenders, and the late Agnès Varda. Past recipients who received the TIFF Ebert Director Award since the TIFF Tribute Awards were introduced include Spike Lee in 2023; Sam Mendes in 2022; Denis Villeneuve in 2021; Chloé Zhao in 2020; and Taika Waititi in 2019.

Montreal-based Durga Chew-Bose is making her feature film debut as both director and screenwriter of Bonjour Tristesse, which will have its World Premiere in the Discovery programme. This contemporary adaptation of late French author Françoise Sagan’s 1954 novel of the same name stars Chloë Sevigny and Claes Bang. Bonjour Tristesse is distributed by Elevation Pictures in Canada. Previous recipients of the TIFF Emerging Talent Award presented by Amazon MGM Studios include Carolina Markowicz in 2023; Sally El Hosaini in 2022; Danis Goulet in 2021; Tracey Deer in 2020; and Mati Diop in 2019.

Camille Dalmais (Corsage, TIFF ’22) and Clément Ducol (Little Tickles) are prominent figures in the French music scene, often collaborating to create innovative and experimental works. Camille, known for her unique vocal style and blending of pop, folk, and avant-garde elements, has gained acclaim with albums like Le Sac des Filles and Le Fil. Clément Ducol, a versatile musician, arranger, and producer, enhances her projects with his creative arrangements and musical expertise. Together, they form a dynamic duo, pushing the boundaries of contemporary French music. Previous recipients of the TIFF Variety Artisan Award include Łukasz Żal in 2023; Hildur Guðnadóttir in 2022; Ari Wegner in 2021; Terence Blanchard in 2020; and Roger Deakins in 2019.

Le Dîner en Blanc returns to Toronto on Thursday, September 19 at a new secret location. Le Dîner en Blanc is the social gathering of the summer — a chic picnic where fashion, good food and most importantly good company meet. A wave of white transforms a secret location in the downtown core as 1200 guests adorned in all white attend dinner à la française where conversation and champagne are essential.

Event veterans Lori Heller from Heller Productions Inc. and Marc Talbot from Exclusive Management Services are taking over as co-hosts of this year’s Le Dîner en Blanc in Toronto. “We’re thrilled to be hosting this unforgettable summer event,” said Lori Heller. “Marc and I are excited to put our experience in luxe large-scale events to work as we create a spectacular evening with fabulous entertainment, food and wine, capturing the beauty and magic of Le Dîner en Blanc.”

Torontonians who would like to be part of Le Dîner en Blanc 2024 can do so by signing up at toronto.dinerenblanc.com. Once on the website, click on ‘Attend Le Dîner en Blanc’ or ‘Sign In’ to create an account and be ready for Phase 3 as soon it opens.

To maintain the uniqueness of Le Dîner en Blanc, every guest has a part to play and observes certain requirements such as:

• Dress code: head-to-toe in white only. Elegance and originality are key, and prizes will be awarded for the best dressed
• Table setting: all white!
• French-influenced event only wine and/or Champagne are served. Curated by Toronto’s iconic wine club, Charlie’s Burgers, guests wishing to enjoy some wine or Champagne, must reserve their selection online through Le Dîner en Blanc’s e-store.

As per Ontario alcohol regulations, guests cannot bring their own alcohol.

• To ensure that the location secret is kept undisclosed until an hour before the event, guests meet at the assigned departure location and are escorted by a Dîner en Blanc volunteer.
• So the event location is left as clean as when guests arrived, guests are required to leave with all their belongings, leftovers, and litter.

Guests are to bring:

• A table, two white chairs, white tablecloth.
• A picnic basket comprising fine food and proper stemware and white dinnerware.

A catered picnic basket option prepared by award-winning Chef Trevor Lui, Culinary Director of Highbell Hospitality known for custom curated dining experiences, can be picked up on site for those who do not wish to pack their own. Guests wishing to do so must reserve online through Le Dîner en Blanc’s e-store.
