#FIRSTLOOK: PWHL CANADIAN PRIMETIME SEASON OPENER ON CBC’S “HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA”

The first women’s game to be featured on CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada, the longest-running sports program in the world returning for its 90th season this fall, will be the PWHL’s Canadian primetime season opener in Montreal vs. Hamilton on Saturday, December 5, 2026.

Radio-Canada has acquired exclusive radio broadcast rights for all Montréal Victoire games in Canada during the 2026-27 season.

New weekly Saturday show CBC Sports Primetime hosted by Andi Petrillo premieres October 3 and Radio-Canada’s new weekly Sunday show Rendez-vous Podium hosted by Jacinthe Taillon debuts October 18.

Canada’s national public broadcaster today announced exclusive new sports coverage including the return of CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada for its 90th consecutive season and Radio-Canada’s radio broadcast of all Montréal Victoire games across Canada, in partnership with the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL). The first women’s hockey game to be featured on the iconic Saturday night broadcast will be the PWHL’s 2026-27 Canadian primetime season opener on Saturday, December 5, when the reigning Walter Cup champion Montréal Victoire face off against expansion team PWHL Hamilton. This announcement is part of CBC/Radio-Canada’s expanded commitment to Canadian sports coverage detailed in June 2026.

CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada will return as part of CBC Sports Primetime, CBC’s new weekly Saturday night sports show hosted by veteran broadcaster Andi Petrillo. Launching Saturday, October 3 on CBC TV and CBC Gem with the Canada Super60 Cricket League, the weekend show will feature major sporting events, professional women’s sports and unmatched coverage of Canada’s high performance athletes as they compete at home and around the world, in Olympic and Paralympic sport. Featured events in October include the Grand Slam of Curling and ISU Figure Skating Grand Prix.

CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada will provide comprehensive coverage for eight primetime PWHL games starting on December 5, including pre- and post-game panel analysis and accompanying digital content on cbcsports.ca and social media. Staying true to tradition, each Hockey Night in Canada game will feature a Canadian-based team. The full PWHL schedule including all CBC and Radio-Canada games will be announced on Friday, October 2.

Adding to PWHL TV coverage and a selection of Montréal Victoire games and PWHL All-Star on ICI TÉLÉ and ICI TOU.TV, Radio-Canada has acquired exclusive audio broadcast rights for all Montréal Victoire games in Canada during the 2026-27 season and will release more details regarding the broadcast on ICI PREMIÈRE and Radio-Canada Ohdio later this fall.

Radio-Canada’s Rendez-vous Podium, a brand-new weekly show combining athletic performances with human stories, premieres Sunday, October 18. Hosted by Jacinthe Taillon, the series will be available on ICI TÉLÉ and ICI TOU.TV Sunday afternoons, bringing live events and stories about the people making a difference on the elite and amateur levels. Both CBC Sports Primetime and Rendez-vous Podium will provide opportunities to catch up with athletes on their journeys toward LA 2028.

#FIRSTLOOK: HOLLYWOOD SUITE COMMEMORATE NATIONAL TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION DAY

On September 30, 2026 Hollywood Suite will present a special day of programming commemorating the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and celebrating the work of Indigenous filmmakers, performers, creatives, and artists from across the nation. The all-day programming begins at 6 a.m. ET with Beans (2020) and concludes with Rhymes for Young Ghouls (2013) at 3:30 a.m. ET the following morning.

This year’s lineup brings together films representing a range of Indigenous cultures and communities, including Cree-Métis, Métis, Mi’kmaq, Mohawk, and Secwépemc perspectives. From science fiction and action thrillers to coming-of-age dramas, documentaries and comedies, the programming showcases the breadth of Indigenous storytelling.

Among the highlights of the day is the broadcast premiere of Danis Goulet’s Night Raiders (2021). Starring Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers, Brooklyn Letexier-Hart, and Alex Tarrant, the film is set in a dystopian future where a military government separates children from their parents and places them in schools. Tailfeathers plays Niska, a Cree woman who joins an underground resistance movement to rescue her daughter.

Also featured are several films produced with support from Hollywood Suite, including Liz Marshall’s documentary s-yewyaw: Awaken (2023); Darrell Dennis’ comedy The Great Salish Heist (2024); and the science-fiction films The First Encounter (2021), directed by Benjamin Ross Hayden, and Alexander Lasheras’ The Beehive (2023).

The centrepiece of the day will air at 7:20 p.m. ET with Remembering the Children: National Day for Truth and Reconciliation 2026, a powerful 90-minute multilingual commemorative event from Parliament Hill in Ottawa. Through heartfelt reflections, moving performances, and stories of strength and survival, the gathering honours Survivors and pays tribute to the children who never made it home. The special is produced in partnership with the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (NCTR), APTN, and CBC/Radio-Canada.

Thirty-six years after Goodfellas changed cinema forever, Windsor International Film Festival (WIFF) is thrilled to bring the Canadian Premiere of AS FAR BACK AS I CAN REMEMBER … THE STORY OF GOODFELLAS, the first feature documentary dedicated to Martin Scorsese’s landmark masterpiece, to this year’s festival. This special screening event will take place Monday, November 2, 2026.

Directed and produced by Lisa Downs and Ashley Pugh, the documentary takes audiences behind the scenes of one of the most influential films ever made, exploring the extraordinary true story that inspired it and the people who brought it to life, including never before seen behind-the-scenes video and photo archive featuring Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, and Joe Pesci.

WIFF is also honoured to welcome acclaimed actor Lorraine Bracco, whose unforgettable portrayal as Karen in Goodfellas remains one of the most iconic performances on screen. Bracco will join Downs and Pugh at the festival and be celebrated with a Spotlight Award, in recognition of her remarkable career and enduring contributions to cinema. #BOXOFFICE: “ENDGAME” REISSUE TAKES TOP SPOT THIS WEEKEND

AVENGERS: ENDGAME ENCORE takes top spot this weekend at the Box Office in a reissue, taking $23 million from 3,060 theatres for Disney. This brings its lifetime total domestically to $884 million.

Second is RESIDENT EVIL with $22 million from 3,684 theatres for Sony Pictures. This brings its run to $102.1 million.

Debuting in third spot is Brad Pitt-led HEART OF THE BEAST with $20.5 million from 3,435 theatres for Paramount Pictures, putting it right ahead of PRIMETIME starring Robert Pattinson, with $19 million from A24/Elevation Pictures. Both films sit at 87% on the Tomatometer right now.

FORGOTTEN ISLAND rounds things out with $10.1 million for Universal Pictures, getting 94% on the Tomatometer.

#FOOD: MOTT 32 NAMED NO. 1 CHINESE RESTAURANT IN CANADA

This fall, award-winning television writer, showrunner and producer Jeff Biederman presents Inside the Writers’ Room: an intimate, nine-week, in-person experience for comedy writers looking to develop and strengthen an original series.

With more than 250 produced episodes across his career, including the iconic Canadian series Life with Derek, Jeff is bringing the professional writers’ room experience to a small group of just eight writers. 

Participants will pitch ideas, break stories, develop characters, work through creative challenges and give and receive notes, all while actively developing their own original comedy series.

#FIRSTLOOK: TORONTO AFTER DARK FILM FESTIVAL 2026 LINEUP

The Toronto After Dark Film Festival (TADFF) has officially unveiled its lineup for its 19th edition of exciting new horror, sci-fi and action films, which will screen from October 14 – 18, 2026 at the Cineplex Scotiabank Theatre (259 Richmond St W) and CineCycle (129 Spadina Ave). Across these five thrilling nights, Toronto audiences will enjoy a fantastic showcase of 14 feature premieres, as well as 33 brilliant genre short films from Canada and around the world.

Single tickets go on sale on September 29, but festival passholders (both Cine-Maniac and All-Nighter tiers) can already begin reserving tickets during an exclusive window from September 25 to September 28.

The festival kicks off with the Canadian Premiere of Brian Duffield’s WHALEFALL. A tense and emotionally-charged survival thriller starring Austin Abrams (RESIDENT EVIL) and Josh Brolin (WEAPONS), the film depicts the harrowing story of a scuba-diver (Abrams) who finds himself swallowed whole by a sperm whale and trapped inside the animal’s stomach. With a dwindling supply of oxygen left in his tank, the young man turns to the nautical and life lessons his father passed on to him in a desperate bid to survive.

Two takes on the intersection of capitalism and body horror highlight the festival’s slate of International Programming: SPECIES (d. Marion Le Corroller, whose 2025 short MELTED DOLL screened at last year’s edition) is an energetic, blood-soaked parable set within the life-or-death world of modern medicine. Edwin’s SLEEP NO MORE follows two siblings travelling to Jakarta to investigate the grisly death of their mother while she was working at an old wig factory – only to discover that her “accident” was not an isolated incident.

Toronto After Dark’s Friday Vampire Night pairs the previously announced I LOVE PARIS with the Canadian Premiere of RED SNOW: Ilja Rautsi’s holiday ho-ho-horror about an angsty teen whose vampire fantasies are fractured when a horrifically violent undead creature dressed as Jolly Old St. Nick shows up at her family’s doorstep.

Two films that are punk in both form and ethos, MATAPANKI (d. Diego “Mapache” Fuentes) follows a ground-level superhero whose powers are activated by alcohol; while HALLOWARRIOR finds young Pumpkin (Milly Shapiro from HEREDITARY) on a post-apocalyptic Halloween defending her home from cannibalistic intruders.

Representing the festival’s Canadian Programming, Sam Scott’s TURN IT UP! offers the story of a struggling indie band turning to a cursed melody for fame, unaware that the melody opens up a dangerous portal between dimensions; and NO LONGER HUMANS (directed by Toronto filmmaker Luca D’Andrea) is a queer coming-of-age love story about a world in which death no longer exists. Shot on 16mm film, D’Andrea’s daring debut feature will be making its North American Premiere in the festival’s Late Night Programme.

Canadian Filmmaking will be further represented across Toronto After Dark’s popular short film slate, which pairs a Canadian short with all feature films across the festival and includes dedicated sidebars for both Canadian and International selections. This year’s festival features 33 short films, including the buzzy MAN EATING PUSSY: an Audience Award Winner at Fantasia, directed by Emily Lawson and starring Grace Glowicki.

The lineup also features the Ontario Premieres of THE FOX (d. Dario Russo) and DRAG (d. Raviv Ullman and Greg Yagolnitzer). In THE FOX, a cunning fox (voiced by Olivia Colman) convinces an impressionable foxhunter (Jai Courtney) to turn his wife (Emily Browning) into the foxhunter’s idea of the perfect woman: a dark folktale built around the age old adage “be careful what you wish for”.

And in DRAG, two sisters (Lizzy Caplan and Lucy DeVito) break into the secluded home of a wealthy artist (John Stamos) for a simple little robbery. When one of the sisters quickly throws out her back, escape becomes an immovable obstacle for the feuding duo – made worse when the artist comes home early!

The 19th edition also marks an inaugural partnership between the festival and its new lead sponsor ScareScore. ScareScore is building the world’s first biometric reaction platform for entertainment. And the festival’s late-night CineCycle Programming has been made possible this year thanks to the support of Branded to Film (B2F), Kingston’s hyperlocal studio for high-concept genre filmmaking, which provides resources, crew and producer support for independent filmmakers shooting in the region.

#THEATRE: MIRVISH PRODUCTIONS PRESENT “HELL’S KITCHEN”

Based semi-autobiographically on the life of Alicia Keys, two-time TONY-winning Musical HELL’S KITCHEN is now playing in Toronto, thanks to Mirvish Productions, at CAA Ed Mirvish Theatre.

The story centers around 17-year-old Ali (Maya Drake), who is navigating being a teen, boys, her controlling mom Jersey (Kennedy Caughell), and finding herself. And it is only by chance that she stumbles upon learning piano with the help of a mentor in Miss Liza Jane (Roz White), which would lead her down the eventual path she would take to Grammy-winning greatness.

At the heart of the story here is the love between mother and daughter, and while it is put through great tests, it proves unbreakable and that is affecting and uplifting. Caughell is a master of her craft and mindblowingly good – what a vocal powerhouse!
