Now in its third thriving year, AN EVENING WITH CANADA’S STARS was held last night at the prestigious Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills. Leading into the Academy Awards and Canadian Screen Week, the Gala honours Canadian accomplishments in Cinema during Awards Season and if any year, this was the year to celebrate. The Gala is brought to us by Telefilm Canada, the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television and the Consulate General of Canada in Los Angeles.
Canada notched over 20 nominations at the Academy Awards this year and one Technical Achievement Award! This also marks the first time ever Canada has had two Films in the running for Best Picture, with Canadian Co-Productions ROOM and BROOKLYN both being nominated.
It was an at-capacity crowd as Canadian talent and notables filled the venue. Being honoured with the Academy‘s Legacy Award are two iconic Canadian screen veterans, Catherine O’Hara and Eugene Levy, whom after making us laugh many years on SCTV, still continue to do so on CBC Series, Schitt’s Creek. Both walked the Carpet tonight with their loved ones before taking the stage to accept their honours.
The fashion was bold and elegant on the Red Carpet with presenter Emmanuelle Chriqui in a gorgeous red and white floral print dress making a subtle Canadian statement. Amanda Brugel was a vision in wavy white, reminding us again what a triumph she was in ROOM as a quick thinking police officer who helps save the day. Laura Vandervoort simply never disappoints and chose a fashion-forward pink lace number. Katie Boland was a stunner in a magenta dress, looking classic and chic. Missy Peregrym continues to rock our world with her amazing choices including a dyed pixie cut and short black dress shirt-like number. Academy Award-nominated Shoreh Aghdashloo was effortlessly chic in simple, flattering red. Stealing the entire show though was dapper Jacob Tremblay, star of ROOM in a perfectly-tailored and patriotic red suit which had us both jealous and in “awww”. Did we mention his swoon-worthy police detective dad Jason was there too? Effortlessly cool in a non-stagedad way.
Why don’t you be the judge of that? Let’s gawk at some of that Canadian beauty which the World can’t seem to get enough of:

Co-Presenter (and Canadian Screen Award Nominee) Lyriq Bent sums-up the spirit of An Evening with Canada’s Stars best by telling the room “We’ve got to show the world what we’re all about because that’s what it takes to be great. We need to understand ourselves before we need others to understand us.”. After he and Chriqui called to stage all Canadian Academy Award Nominees this year, last but not least was the brilliant young star of ROOM himself, Tremblay. “I need you all to understand – this is the future generation. This is why when we see talent, we need to embrace talent, not just tell him how great he is, but to show this young man what it is to be a good man. That’s our responsibility in this industry.”.
Suicide Squad star Adam Beach, who also presented, had a two or thing to say about Tremblay too!

As H&M Canada plan their unveiling of their Flagship Eaton Centre store today, the Media got an amazing preview of the newly-renovated fashion powerhouse. Stars came to ring-in the occasion with Brampton’s own teen hitmaker Alessia Cara performing an four-song acoustic set and also Actress/Singer/DJ Taryn Manning (8 Mile, Orange is the New Black) gracing the stage! Jillionaire of Major Lazer unfortunately wasn’t able to make it in, likely impacted by the storm conditions, which delayed Manning‘s flight from Chicago this afternoon.
Pear-Vodka Cocktails were poured, Appetizers like Jerk Chicken Waffles, Mini Grilled Cheeses with Brie and Pear, among other delectables were served. The shop would then transform into a huge dance party with multiple dance circles formed with many of the City’s fashionable elite.
Organized by top Event Planning duo Candice + Allison, guests left satiated and ready to spread the word about some of the 58,000 square foot store’s new additions including:
-LED Screens and a fully LED screen-illuminated facade
-H&M HOME Section (very kitschy and colourful decor selection)
-The David Beckham Modern Essentials Collection (we’ve seen it and can confirm it’s stylish and priced affordable)
-H&M Studio Collection Spring/Summer 2016 (bright prints, demin and handcrafted elements)
Are you ready?

You’re probably already a fan of Anthony Mackie and don’t even know it. The talented veteran on screen and stage has built a career of acclaim starring in a litany of high-profile productions. If you’ve seen Million Dollar Baby, We Are Marshall, Half Nelson, The Hurt Locker, The Adjustment Bureau or Pain & Gain, you’ve already likely admired his work. The Louisiana-born star however would go on to best be known for his work as Sam Wilson/Falcon in the Marvel Universe.
A snow storm alert couldn’t stop the personable Mackie from making his way to Toronto to promote his latest effort, TRIPLE 9, directed by John Hillcoat. The star-studded Action-Thriller stars the likes of Norman Reedus, Aaron Paul, Casey Affleck, Woody Harrelson, Kate Winslet, Chiwetel Ejiofor and more. It tells a story of moral-fluidity and corruption as a group of Police Officers and criminals band to perform two high-risk heists tasked by the Russian mafia. Mackie plays corrupt police officer Marcus Atwood, whose life is put on the line to complete the mission. As an indicator of Mackie‘s fun demeanour, he joked to photographers, “Hold on, I gotta adjust my ‘junk’!” before posing for cameras.
Our David Baldwin and Justin Waldman chat with Mackie tonight at the Scotiabank Theatre Red Carpet Premiere of TRIPLE 9. The weather would not stop dedicated fans who lined the fan pit at the venue in hopes of a Selfie with the star.
David: “What drew you to the script?”
Anthony: “Really, I just wanted to work with John. When I read the script I was really intrigued by the idea of this character and his different levels of complexity. I find a lot of the time when you’re not the lead character, you get one-note characters. The script was really well-written and the characters all get their own moment and most of the time you don’t get that.”
David: “Your character is the most morally-ambiguous one in Triple 9. Is he good or is he bad? In the middle of the Movie, he has second thoughts.”
Anthony: “I think that’s great. You go into Movie seeing the character in one way and by the end of it you realize a completely different person was in the Movie. When you see this type of a character, you go on a journey. You buy into who he is.”.
David: “Tell me what it was like working with this Powerhouse Cast.”.
Anthony: “It was fun. It was easy. It is great when you work with actors if they are gonna show up and do the work. They just do the work. So you gotta make sure you’re on your A-Game.”.
Justin: “When are you going to become Captain America?”.
Anthony: “Sh*t, I don’t know!” (laughs)

The Aviator introduces his new friend to an extraordinary world where anything is possible. A world that he himself was initiated into long ago by The Little Prince (newcomer Riley Osborne). It’s here that The Little Girl’s magical and emotional journey into her own imagination – and into the universe of The Little Prince – begins. And it’s where The Little Girl rediscovers her childhood and learns that ultimately, it’s human connections that matter most, and that what’s truly essential can only be seen with the heart.

It is with great pleasure that we get to tell you about our experience test driving the Ford Escape SE this weekend. Gearing up for our Hollywood trip to attend the An Evening with Canada’s Stars Gala is something we’ve been looking forward to, but with that came a lot of advanced errands.
We also have been putting-off our visit to see A PIC BY MRWILL and after catching wind of her arrival at Woodbine to train, we stopped by to meet the sweet filly named in our honour! More on that here.
The first thing I noticed about the Ford Escape is its spaciousness. The SUV‘s deep seats – adjustable 10 ways – had us cradled in with the heated seating option almost mandatory in these cold conditions. Five sit comfortably and we love that the passengers in the rear also get their own heating/cooling vents!
Its hatchback operates with ease with two taps on the remote key and was it ever spacious, perfect for transporting heavy loads of groceries or household supplies.
Let’s talk about staying connected, which is uber-important to us. With two USB ports we simultaneously were able to keep our phone charged and also listen to our favourite tunes stored on a USB key. The nine-speaker SONY sound system, was focused front and center on the dashboard placing us right into music. Ford‘s SYNC system enabled us to make and take calls via Bluetooth through the car’s speakers, focused on the road.
Performance wise, its 1.6L EcoBoost® I-4 engine had us accelerating quickly, putting us in control of the road. Its front passenger airbags are ready at all times to protect us if ever needed and we loved the tire pressure monitoring system, ourselves having experienced a flat before!
The Ecoboost option is a dream for fuel efficiency. We used less than $40 of gas over four days of far commuting ranging from Mississauga to downtown to Toronto’s east end. Specifically, you get 10.9L/100 km in the city and 7.6L/100 km on the highway.
Despite its no-fuss practicality, the Escape has an element of luxury. Its over-sized moonroof made for ambiance.
Clearly it isn’t just we who agree the Escape is a great value starting at $23,699, we spotted on several occasions others of the like on our highways! Popular ride!
These @FordCanada Escapes are more popular than imagined. Drove alongside at least four of these within an hour! pic.twitter.com/HQQ8duzYx0

Although Saks Fifth Avenue already is performing exceptionally-well at its just-launched Queen Street location, a first-of-its-kind foray into the Canadian market, Suburbanites can soon look forward to the even bigger and more fabulous Sherway Gardens location! The upscale retailer is set to open this Thursday over three shopping levels in the 138,706 square foot space. The top floor alone had 36 dressing rooms!
Balmain, Derek Lam, Thakoon, Marni, Alice + Olivia, Proenza Schouler, Alexander McQueen, Alexander Wang, Jimmy Choo, Manolo Blahnik, Lanvin. These are just some of the high-end brands featured at Saks Fifth Avenue Sherway and how it is determined to set itself aside in the Canadian fashion landscape are the risks it takes. Above this, Saks also will have offerings from their exclusive SFC Collection available too. Beauty, jewelry, handbags, sunglasses and accessories also are highlighted in addition to apparel and shoes.
Store Manager Michael Armstrong greeted an ultra-exclusive group of influencers today, giving us a chance to see what insiders are calling among the best Saks stores in the world at Sherway Gardens. Formerly of Holt Renfrew, Armstrong knew working for Saks Fifth Avenue was something he absolutely had to pursue after word got out that Saks would be launching in Canada back in 2013. After several rounds of extensive interviews which saw him flying to the U.S., including a car crash in a cab moments before a crucial go-see, he eventually would receive blessing from the President of Saks Fifth Avenue, beating-out almost 150 other candidates for the position.
The retailer makes its expansion north based on exceptional numbers indicating that Canadians are willing to shop Saks when it is the right product. Armstrong asks me, “Did you know that 80% of Canadians hold passports?”. Sales numbers showed that a significant number of Saks consumers were trekking to the U.S. to buy their unique and exclusive fashions.
He reveals what makes Canadian Saks Fifth Avenue stores different from its American counterparts is its intensive focus on service. Saks at your Service, they call it. Throughout the fashion haven, we see sculptures of Bellboys balancing layer upon layer of garment boxes. With 30+ personal shoppers (complete with individual bios) available as part of their Fifth Avenue Club, offering an exquisite and sophisticated private shopping experience to customers, Armstrong says “It doesn’t matter if you shop just once a year, the FAC is available to clientele of all types.”. We are given a tour of the Club’s impressive, spacious and cozy lounge, complete with a pantry. Colour tones are muted, contemporary, elegant, letting the customer shine. Customers also have the potential of getting customized alerts sent straight to them before stock are placed on display.
Let’s talk about dining. Oliver & Bonacini‘s legacy is well established in the City. Beaumont Kitchen, attached to the retail space offers fashionable dining all day long with West Coast flare by District Chef, Michael Hay.
Want something quicker? Pusateri’s Fine Foods have become synonymous with the best in the City. A Food Hall by the top-tier Grocer is almost ready to launch on Saks Sherway’s bottom floor complete with Sushi, Nutella Café, Greenhouse Juice, a Champagne, Prosciutto and Raw Bar … and then some!
Saks Fifth Avenue Sherway opens Thursday, February 25, 2016.
It is located at 25 West Mall in Toronto, operating 10 AM to 9 PM Monday to Friday, 9:30 AM to 9 PM Saturday and 11 AM TO 6 PM Sunday.
