It’s Disney‘s THE LITTLE MERMAID making a huge splash in its opening, taking $105 million Friday to Sunday from 4,320 theatres. By Monday, it is expected to gross $125 million this U.S. Memorial Day weekend. It gets generally favourable reviews with 67% on the Tomatometer. This is a far cry from its animated predecessor’s $6 million opening in 1989.
Second is FAST X with $21.8 million for the three day weekend, taking its two week total to $112.1 million for Universal Pictures.
In third is GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 with $20 million, a run of $306 million for Marvel/Disney over four weekends.
Fourth is THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE with $6.2 million for Universal Pictures, a tally of $560 million domestically over eight weekends.
THE MACHINE opens at the bottom of the Top Five with $2.6 million for Sony Pictures. The Action-Comedy gets 29% on the Tomatometer.
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 once again finds itself on-top with $55 million in its second weekend out, taking its total to $207.9 million for Disney/Marvel.
THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE also repeats in second for a Chris Pratt 1-2 finish once again, with $13.3 million from 3,800 theatres for Universal Pictures. Its total domestically, now is at $536 million.
Third goes to BOOK CLUB: THE NEXT CHAPTER with $7 million from 3,508 theatres for Universal Pictures/Focus Features in its debut, fittingly on Mother’s Day. Led by a Cast of heavyweights including Jane Fonda and Diane Keaton, this sequel gets 47% on the Tomatometer.
In fourth is EVIL DEAD RISE with $3.6 million from 2,621 theatres for Warner Bros., a four week run of $60 million.
ARE YOU THERE GOD? IT’S ME, MARGARET rounds this Top Five out with $2.3 million from 2,359 theatres for Cineplex Pictures/Lionsgate.
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 rockets off to a big opening with $110 million from 4,450 theatres for this final installment in the Triology for Marvel/Disney. It gets raves from Critics with 81% on the Tomatometer. Best opening for the Series stil goes to the 2017’s second installment with $145 million in its debut.
Second is THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE, making it two films for Chris Pratt on-top. It makes $18.5 million this weekend from 3,909 theatres for Universal Pictures, a tally of $518 million over five weekends.
In third we have EVIL DEAD RISE with $5.6 million from 3,036 theatres for Warner Bros., a total $59 million over three weekends grossed.
ARE YOU THERE GOD? IT’S ME MARGARET is fourth with $3.3 million for Lionsgate/Cineplex Pictures, earning $12.6 million it its second weekend out.
JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 4 rounds this Top Five out with $2.4 million for Lionsgate/Cineplex Pictures as well, bringing its seven week total to $180 million.
There’s no stopping THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE as it takes the top spot yet again at the Box Office, with $58 million from 4,350 theatres in its third weekend out for Universal Pictures. This takes its total run thus far, to $434.1 million domestically.
In second is EVIL DEAD RISE with a smashing $23 million from 3,402 theatres in its debut for New Line Cinema/Warner Bros. It gets 86% on the Tomatometer from Critics. Franchise best still goes to 2013’s EVIL DEAD, which opened with $25 million.
Third is Guy Ritchie’s THE COVENANT with $6.1 million from 2,611 theatres for MGM. It gets 81% on the Tomatometer.
AIR lands in fourth with $5.4 million for Amazon Studios/Warner Bros., a total $41 million to date.
Rounding-out our Top Five is DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: HONOR AMONG THIEVES with $5.4 million for Paramount Pictures.
THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE takes the top spot at the Box Office a second straight week! Bringing-in a stellar $72 million from 4,371 theatres for Universal Pictures, a total $332 million grossed already.
Second place goes to AIR with $8 million its second weekend out from 3,507 theatres, a tally of $33.5 million for Warner Bros. domestically.
In third is RENFIELD, which stars Nicolas Cage and Nicholas Hoult, opening with $7.9 million for Universal PIctures. It passes with a 60% score on the Tomatometer.
Fourth is THE POPE’S EXORICST with $7.8 million for Sony Screen Gems/Sony Pictures. It gets 46% on the Tomatometer.
Rounding things out in fifth is JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 4 with $7 million from 3,033 theatres, a total $159 million for Cineplex Pictures/Lionsgate.
