Big night in Brooklyn! The Stars of Music were out in full force tonight at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York for the MTV Video Music Awards, with the neighbouring streets being shut down for a huge Red Carpet Spectacle not unlike our v. own MuchMusic Video Awards. Funnyman Jimmy Fallon hosted the festivities.
Marquee names like Robin Thicke, Miley Cyrus, One Direction, Selena Gomez, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Lady Gaga walked the Carpet, many impressing with their style – some choices wilder than others. Perry scored high points for her Leopard-print Emanuel Ungaro dress adorned with gold butterflies, sporting a Grill in her mouth. Gomez also was a Winner on the Carpet with her daring and revealing Versace dress which proclaimed loud and clear that she’s all grown up now! Gaga meanwhile was understated, sexy and elegant with a black Prabal Gurung dress adorned with a train and bow on her waist.
In addition to ‘NSync reuniting with Justin Timberlake for the first time in several years making headlines, they performed Bye Bye Bye and Girlfriend together with the Pop Megastar, who also won Best Editing (Mirrors) and Best Direction (Suit & Tie). More importantly, top honours of Video of the Year went to Timberlake also for Mirrors, a touching eight-minute Tribute to his Grandparents; his Grandfather had passed away just last November. Watch the ‘NSync Reunion here.
Also garnering importance was Hip-Hop Act Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, who won Best Hip-Hop Video for Can’t Hold Us (ft. Ray Dalton) and also winning with Same Love (ft. Mary Lambert) for Best Video with a Social Message. The Duo performed the latter live before the Audience and were joined on-stage in a surprise performance from Oscar and Grammy Winner Jennifer Hudson.
Lady Gaga kicked-off the night with a band as we saw her transform through her several evolutions via wigs during her Performance of new Single, Applause. An impressed Macklemore was seen admiring her Performance greatly nodding his head in awe. Watch her performance here.
Miley Cyrus also caught our attentions in a revealing Teddy Bear Bodysuit with giant dancing Teddy Bears on-stage, performing her Summer Hit We Can’t Stop. She then was joined on-stage by red-hot Robin Thicke who performed both Blurred Lines and latest Single Give it 2 U. Jaws dropped as she Twerked before the Audience with her tongue sticking out! Watch the Performance here.
Bruno Mars gets high points for electrifying the Audience with a stirring Prince-inspired rendition of latest Single, Gorilla as green lasers filled the Arena.
Katy Perry after much hype, capped-off the night performing latest Single Roar from underneath the Brooklyn Bridge dressed in a Michelle Rodriguez/Girlfight-inspired outfit in a Boxing Ring. A grand Affair indeed! Watch her Performance here.
Other big Winners tonight include Selena Gomez winning Best Pop Video for Come & Get It and also her Friend Taylor Swift for Best Female Pop Video with I Knew You Were Trouble. Newcomer Austin Mahone also was named Artist to Watch.

I honestly don’t believe my luck! Anyone who knows me well will know about my v. public J-Hud Obsession phase, which had me seeing Dreamgirls at the theatre seven times, not to mention the giant Poster on my wall, Fridge Magnets, Postcards, Deluxe Edition Soundtrack, Three-Disc Limited Edition DVD. The Mania went even further as I went on a mission to snatch-up every Magazine Cover featuring her during her Oscar Campaign. You name it, I had it. Things got so bad for a while that I stopped supporting Beyoncé (we’re okay again), her on-screen Nemesis. Jennifer Hudson for a good 18 months was my Female Alter-ego.
And you can just imagine how devastated I was last year when she couldn’t make her Premiere at TIFF 2011 for WINNIE, which has her portraying Winnie Mandela! It still was v. cool however, meeting her Co-Star Terrence Howard!
Today was my lucky day as I took Billy on a stroll through Yorkville at Lunchtime to notice an Escalade parked uncharacteristically right in-front of Nervosa Trattoria. Noticing the window was rolled a third-down, right before my eyes I saw the Oscar and GRAMMY Winner. Within moments, she came out of the Car with her Handler, amazingly nice to come over to stop for a Photo. Even in casual mode, she looked stunning – proudly sporting that amazing improved physique!
Hudson is in-town for two reasons: she appears tomorrow at Air Canada Centre, performing at We Day – celebrating inspiration and global change among Youth – and on Saturday, she makes her way to historic Fort York to perform at Bliss Ball, in support of SickKids‘ Patient Amenities Fund. A big Heart to match that big Voice.
Make no mistake though, the Chicago Native actually knows Toronto real well. She Tweeted yesterday, “On my way to Canada !! Toronto is my old stomping ground. It’s like home. I’m excited.”.
And while we’re on the topic, WINNIE also happens to open in theatres on Friday, October 5, 2012. I am hosting a Giveaway for Tickets along with D Films and District PR for Passes across Canada. Enter here.

Although she was unable to make it out to TIFF 2011 for Winnie for which she is said to deliver a strong performance, Oscar and GRAMMY Winner Jennifer Hudson is Toronto-bound at month’s end to spread a bit of goodwill. In addition to a recently-announced appearance at WE Day to help inspire change among Youth on Friday, September 28, 2012 at Air Canada Centre, she also is now slated to appear at the Bliss Ball on Saturday, September 29, 2012 in Fort York, for the SickKids Hospital Patient Amenities Fund.
Suffice it to say, she’s more than making-up for last year’s Toronto snub?
D Films will be releasing Winnie v. soon. Passes possibly to come? Stay tuned.
