Visionary Filmmaker Luc Besson has long been thrilling moviegoers with a breathtaking catalog of work. Whether it be Léon the Professional, The Fifth Element, Nikita, The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc or more recently Lucy, his Films have mesmerized a generation and raised the bar of innovation for his peers. While often wearing Writer, Producer and Director’s hats simultaneously, he also was responsible as Writer and Producer several smash success including the Taxi, Taken and The Transporter franchises. The personable and private (he doesn’t like being photographed) Co-Founder of massively successful EuropaCorp has gifted us with Films which at once are high art as they are commercial, resonating in a big way with film lovers worldwide.
We had the pleasure of journeying for the first time ever to Montreal where Besson met Canadian Press in support of his latest Action-Fantasy, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. The Film starring Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne, is based on the internationally-adored graphic novel series Valérian and Laureline, set for release late July. The Film sees its two leads sent on a mission to Alpha where a dark force threatens a peaceful existence, tasked with protecting the future of the universe.
What are your earliest recollections of Valérian and Laureline and at what point did you decide to adapt it for the big screen?
Besson: “Actually, very late. I was a big fan of the comics since I was 10-years-old. It was a like a little treasure I kept inside me and I never thought about making a Film about it.”.
“Jean-Caude Mezieres (one of the creators of Valérian and Laureline) was working of The Fifth Element 20 years ago abd at one point he asked ‘Why are you doing this stupid 5th Element thing?’.”. “I read the comic again and it wasn’t possible with technology then with four characters and 2,000 aliens.”.
“We needed for Avatar to come along. Avatar was an open tool box. Cameron (James) made it all possible.”.
You’ve previously paired with the artistic greats like Moebius on The Fifth Element. Describe the importance of celebrating French artistry here too in adapting the graphic novels on which Valerian is based upon, to a worldwide audience.
Besson: “There is no nationality with art. No one asks you for a passport for your drawing.”.
“First is the story. What do you want to say to people? When this is done – and I spent a lot of time working on this – then I think what clothes I am gonna put on the script.”.
“For Valerian, I contacted artists around world and wound-up with a team 10 to 12 guys over three years from China, Brazil, American, France. They bring their own sensitivites and drew almost 6,00 drawings. I love tons of ideas coming.”. He adds, “There are over 2,000 costumes in Valerian.”.
“Storytelling is the main stone and I love to spend many, many months making it look better.”.
You have a great eye for talent. Describe for what went behind the inspired casting choices behind Valerian.
Besson: “I’m not sensitive to the marketing point of view. I try to take best actor for the part. If they’re well known and popular, great. If not, I still take it.”.
On stars Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne, he says. “They’re only 25, so fresh and so young. It reminds me of when I was 16-years-old watching Star Wars and seeing Luke Skywalker and Han Solo. We didn’t know who these guys were.”.

20th Century Fox x Mr. Will want to give Readers in Toronto a chance to see A CURE FOR WELLNESS. The Screening takes place Thursday, February 2, 2017 at Cineplex Yonge & Dundas.
An ambitious young executive (Dane Dehaan) travels to the Swiss Alps to retrieve his boss from a “wellness spa,” only to find that his boss has vanished. He is then trapped in the facility, and begins to realize that its staff have a far more wicked plan than to simply improve the health of their patients. While held at the spa, he encounters a young girl named Hannah (Mia Goth), a longtime spa patient who is oblivious to what horrible things the spa director has prepared for her.
As the young man’s sanity is tested, he discovers that he has been diagnosed with the same outlandish illness that keeps all the patients at the spa hoping for a cure.
Director Kim Nguyen brings to TIFF ’16 a Philosophical Drama, Two Lovers and a Bear, that questions how far one will go for a loved one and at what cost. When two lovers are living close to the North Pole and they both have their inner demons to face, the question gets raised as to what they will do for one another to allow them to achieve their dreams and try to escape the horrible pasts they have left behind.
The Movie focuses on Lucy (Canada’s Tatiana Maslany) and Roman (Dane DeHaan) who are madly in love with one another. They both live near the North Pole in a secluded community to try and escape their pasts but every now and then it manages to resurface and hurt them both. When Lucy receives word that she has been accepted to study biology, their relationship takes a turn for the worst and the movie starts to beg the question of how far will one go for their love?
Both Maslany and DeHaan give it their all, and their performance can turn even the most cynical of people into believers. The chemistry they share throughout the Film is truly magical and makes the audience believe what they are witnessing is genuine emotions. Two Lovers and a Bear is not to be missed at TIFF ’16.
Two Lovers and a Bear screens at TIFF on Tuesday, September 13, 2016 at 6:30 PM at the Visa Screening Room(Elgin Theatre) and Wednesday, September 14, 2016 at 3 PM at Ryerson Theatre.
Elevation Pictures and Mr. Will want to take Toronto Readers to see part-Comedy/Horror/Romance, LIFE AFTER BETH starring Aubrey Plaza! Up for grabs are Run-of-Engagement Passes to watch at your convenience.
A young man’s recently deceased girlfriend mysteriously returns from the dead, but he slowly realizes she is not the way he remembered her.
LIFE AFTER BETH also stars Dane DeHaan, John C. Reilly, Molly Shannon, Matthew Gray Gubler, Alia Shawkat and Anna Kendrick!
Production fully is now under-way for Anton Corbijn‘s LIFE, which we reported previously would be filming in Toronto. The Drama, based on True Events and the friendship between LIFE Magazine Photographer Dennis Stock and Pop Culture Icon James Dean, stars The Twilight Saga Megastar Robert Pattinson, his third Movie to film in the City over the past three years, and up-and-coming Talent Dane DeHaan.
Filming took place today in the Downtown Core at a Building ridden with Bedbug problems in the past, with both external and internal shoots taking place for much of the afternoon. As a torrential downpour of sloshy wet snow handicapped the City midday, the Shoot moved indoors where a Movie Premiere scene within the Film had commenced.
Appearing in the Scene is Academy Award Winner Sir Ben Kingsley, who was reported as having flown into the City for the Film earlier this week, cast as Canadian-born Studio Executive Jack Warner. Spending much of his day in his Trailer, the mustached Thespian was guided along with a Handler under an umbrella, dressed warmly in a green Canada Goose Parka. “I’m afraid you will take my Photo and show it to your Friends on the Internet!”, said Kingsley when asked by Fans to pose for a Group Photo. Despite declining to pose for a Photo, upon returning for a Touch-Up later in the day, he threw a quick wave to Fans.
Meanwhile DeHaan, who plays Dean inthe ’50s-set LIFE, was enjoying the Olympics in his Trailer. He had an earlier wrap, seen heading home in a Plaid Jacket, Toque and Glasses.
The Film’s Star, Pattinson, was spotted smoking a cigarette in a hidden area of the Building he was filming at in the afternoon, later retiring to his Trailer for a six-hour-long break which saw him lunching on a Subway Sandwich, craving a large bag of Potato Chips in the evening brought to him by his Assistant. The handsome 27-year-old British Actor who plays the Lead Role of Stock, donned a Canada Goose Parka and was seen exiting quietly, his hood concealing his face. His Private Bodyguard Dean aided him along to his vehicle, narrowly avoiding a serious fall on the extremely slippery footing. Fortunately he made it unscathed and fall-free to a late night of filming!
LIFE continues filming west of Toronto tomorrow and is slated to wrap Production late March.
We’ve had a wonderful history with Pattinson over the past few years. Let’s take a walk down Memory Lane, shall we?
He’s back! Is it safe to say that Robert Pattinson by now call Toronto a second home, filming his third Movie here in just three years? I mean, he’s practically Canadian now!
LIFE is set to begin production in Toronto on February 18, 2014, wrapping about one month later. The Film from Control Director Anton Corbijn centers on a Photograph for LIFE Magazine, Dennis Stock, assigned to shoot James Dean. The two went-on to become great Friends.
Starring in the role of Stock will be Pattinson, while Up-and-Comer Dane DeHaan – just in Toronto at TIFF ’13 for Kill Your Darlings – has been cast as Dean. Stock shot the iconic Photos of Dean which went on to become synonymous with the Star’s iconic brand of coolness.
News of the $15-million Production broke last September via The Hollywood Reporter, but within the blink of an eye, the time soon is before us. Also beginning production simultaneously next month is Guillermo del Toro‘s Crimson Peak, as announced previously. More details here.
Give yourself a Patt on the back, Toronto! We’ve waited long for some real Starpower in this City!
Just landed in New York City earlier today and what a night it’s been! And the Met Gala festivities haven’t even begun! I stumbled upon an Advance Screening for The Great Gatsby, held at the Museum of Modern Art and after sticking around for a bit, the Stars just poured out of the Venue unlike anything I’ve ever seen!
A merging of Fashion and Film Worlds collided tonight including the likes of: Vera Wang, Emma Roberts, Michael Shannon, Cuba Gooding Jr., Ezra Miller, Kylie Minogue, Aubrey Plaza, David Schwimmer, Dane DeHaan, Anna Wood, John Leguizamo, Meg Hilty, Piper Perabo, Oliver Stone, Katy Perry, Solange Knowles and of course Star Carey Mulligan. Unreal.
Stay tuned for more Stars as I capture Stars of the Met Gala tomorrow night. You ain’t seen nothin’ yet!
